    One small correction for the last shot of Nordstrom comparing f/2 vs f/2.8: this is a one stop difference, not a half stop.

    I really appreciate this comparioson. Not only does it reveal the ver significant sharpness difference at Widerberg appertures, but also the difference in light transmission, as well as (even if it was not discussed) the much heavier vignette on the Meike lens. For stills that should be close to two stops of advantage for the Rokinon. So in low light shots, when you correct the vignette and lift shadows that will lead to noisier shots for the Meike.

    I was torn between the Meikie and the Rokinon. After watching this I decided to go with Rokinon. Reason why is because most of my client I shoot for post my photos/videos on Instagram and Instagram usually compresses (lowers the quality and sharpness) videos and photos people post. So Rokinon being sharper is gonna help maintain some of that quality. The decision came down to what I would use the lens for. Hope the helps anyone whose trying to choose between the two

    you said exactly what I felt about the aperture ring on the meike lens, and it also applies to their 35mm F1.7.
    It's just so hard to keep it at the aperture setting that's desired, every time I pick it up it's on a different aperture setting.

    F stop is the ratio of focal length to diameter of the opening of the diaphragm, which does not say anything about the light output of the total lens, (which reaches the sensor), therefore are the T stops.

    Thank you for the review and all the videos you make - I like them. But I have to say my experience with these lenses is a bit different. I also have the a6000 and been looking for some cheap wide angle lens.
    As I had an opportunity to test both these lenses a little bit I did many shots from wide open to fully "closed" with same scene and precisely focusing. As I was choosing which one to buy I really tried to do the test as good and precise as I can. Honestly the MEIKE really really surprised me. The sharpness was absolutely comparable with both these lenses - sometimes a little bit better with Samyang, sometimes Meike and sometimes it was pretty much the same. I also didn't notice such big image quality loss in the corners with Meike - it was mostly pretty much the same as the Samyang but many times I saw even a bit more detail and sharpness with the Meike! I definitely didn't expect that.
    Along with the aberation Samyang has and the price difference I bought the Meike and while owning it few months now I really am happy for the purchase. If I needed wider aperture I would go for Samyang but as far as I am good with f2.8 I had really no reason to buy the Samyang/Rokinon. As the Meike is quite a lot cheaper there could be some variance in built quality so I believe it could just be possible that my lens performs better than yours. Who knows.
    Thanks for the videos and keep up. Have a nice day.

    I have the Rokinon 12mm, which I use on an M43 Olympus. It is a nicely built lens that is considerably less expensive than its Olympus counterpart. I found that the lens hood that came with the lens was a poor fit (too loose), so I bought a $3 metal lens hood from eBay. The lens performs very well on M43, although I did find the focus ring a bit stiff. It is a great buy.

    Beautiful video and well done TechnologyMafia! Rokinon is rock! It's the best sharp for wider lens. I suggest you might want to learn how to use RAW editing. It's not that hard. It's very easy to remove purple fringing CA and correction distortion. Easy fix and editing chromatic aberration, vignetting, and a little barrel distortion can be done in lightroom. Pro tips F/2.0 to F/5.6 sometimes it gets purple fringing and distortion. F/5.6 to F/8.0 is perfect for just JPEG. I always shoot RAW + JPEG mode in the A6000. I keep all JPEG but if I want to fix something I want then use RAW editing in Lightroom. But I understand you're prefer JPEG and amateur for all people on this video review. Maybe someday you might want to try it. :)

    Nice comparison video. The kit lens is sharp enough for me, and I don't need that wide for now.
    Since you manual focus the shots, I suspect there are some differences due to lack of accuracy. Regarding the Meike lens, I'm not surprised if they cheat the f/stops, i.e, f/2 is actually f/2.8, etc.

    • @ArthurR
      @ArthurR  7 лет назад +1

      Right, there will always be issues with manual focus accuracy. The Rokinon focuses at infinity, the Meike doesnt really, you have to dial it back from infinity for accurate focus.

    the reason one is brighter than the other is because of transmission, the amount of light that actually hits the sensor. Similar to horsepower versus horsepower at the wheels of a car. Sony is starting to mark their lenses with t - stops to indicate how much light actually gets through the lens compared to the aperture.

    • @ArthurR
      @ArthurR  7 лет назад +4

      Good info. Thanks for the comment!

    • @epion33
      @epion33 7 лет назад

      t-stops can still be implemented in photography and Sony has lenses marked than can be used for photos, as well as video. You didn't really add anything useful to the discussion other than the fact that t-stops are typically, and have been, used in video. I wasn't aware that the two lenses were different apertures.

    • @epion33
      @epion33 7 лет назад +2

      It's ok, I've made a habit of sounding arrogant online. I do however feel like t-stops should be incorporated into lens buying, since the aperture doesn't always directly tell how it will perform in low light. I do understand it's use in video; so there is less variance with exposures when swapping lens.

    • @ENV163
      @ENV163 7 лет назад

      f-stop its depth of field charachteristic. t-stop its brightness charachteristic. Lens with max F1.4 may be darker that lens with max aperture F1.8.

    LOL, When you say, "Not sure why the Meike is not performing...." The answer is simple, the picture is out of focus. The rule states that if none of the image is in focus, the entire image is out of focus.

    Rokinon is a clear winner! Thanks for a very informative review.

    This is a very interesting test. Makes you wonder about lenses that claim to be 0.95 if they really are. If you didn't do this test no one would have been wise to these differences in a lens that look so similar. On my channel lenses are one of my favorite things to review though

    The aberration on the Rokinon is just unacceptable.

    i have the samyang/rokinon, and its to easy to focus, and to sharp, no always, but in is to sharp, to take night photography its good, but the sony a6000 make a little dificult, but its ok. for the price looks better the meike, but the quality its far away better in the rokinon. good video as always

      I agree, unless $100 is going to break the budget, better to go with the Rokinon.

    Folks, an F-Stop is a mathematical equation. It's based on the focal length of the lens relative to size of the opening through which light is allowed. It is not an exact science. Thats why cine lenses use T-Stops which is accurate to the sensor. This guy gives bad info.

    Meike always lies about their F-stop

    fstop = boke, tstop = brightness, just FYI.

      prusaks you means if get cine lens with T stop it will always produce sharp edge to edge image without blurring background ?

    • @prusaks
      @prusaks 7 лет назад +1

      No. Fstop is the theoretical amount of light a lens can capture(calculated based on lens physical size ignoring glass inside). Tstop is the actual amount(measured at sensor).
      If you don't want boke, bump up apature to f10 or so. Regarding sharpness, only option is checking lens reviews or dxomark.

    I have both and the Meike is better, Rokinon feels cheap and helluva purple fringing. Your sharpness test was tainted towards the Rokinon for some reason, you seem to not put the Meike lens in focus. I think u did this on purpose. The Meike lens has GREAT SHARPNESS, especially when u use the focus peaking. Very lame job because you like the Rokinon better.
