Ok I had to come back to this video just to confirm how AWESOME this lens is. I bought it based on this video and I loved it. It does produce super sharp photos, and the closer photos look very cool due to the wide angle. This is now one of my favorite lenses and for sure will be taking it to travel. Thank you Mark for your videos!
I love hearing this, thank you for taking the time to share, it honestly means a lot. These are the comments that keep me making videos.
Thanks I may just buy this lens
@@markwiemels hello, I purchased the Rokinon lens for my Canon EOS Mark M II camera. It fits the camera perfectly and clicks into place but when I click the button to snap a photo nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong? Not able to find any helpful guidance for this issue online and any help is greatly appreciated.
@@CetoraMeanders Setting in the camera, release shutter without lens.
@@markwiemelsthank you so much! It works now. I appreciate your help
Had mine paired with my a6000 since I bought it about 7 years ago, everything is so crisp with this and perfect for astro photography
Looking to buy this lens also for my a6000, glad to have seen your comment. Thanks! :D
This is the first lens I ever bought for myself besides having the kit lens on my Canon M50. I love this lens.
Yea, was one of my first too, still love it.
Fantastic lens. There is something about the images from Samyang lenses that are very sort of colourful and lifelike. I use it for astro too. It's great for shooting aurora. I use F/2, 8 sec, ISO 800. To nail focus I use 10x zoom and focus on a single star.
@@anonykip You're welcome. Good luck.
Don't forget, Fuji cameras like the X-H1, X-T4, X-S10, and X-H2 also have IBIS that easily provides 3 or 4 stops of image stabilization (or more), so it's very possible to shoot the Rokinon 12mm f/2 with stabilization.
The great thing about this lens being manual you just set and forget I've also got the 16 mm manual for landscape photography I find that the two lenses being manual helps slow me down with the thought process behind the photo the composition etc and I find that to be an advantage so when I do use a automatic lens I go through the same thought process I even take a test shot with my phone it just helps to create good habits
agree.
Extremely sharp on the Fuji X-E1... quite amazing really. Great street/travel lens if you are into wide, usually travel with a 28mm/24mm but actually liking 18mm (12mm on APS-C multiplied) better.
Rocking this one on a Fuji xs-10. Couldn't agree more with you. Great lens. Thanks for the tip on using tape to prevent moving the focus.
That would be a really nice setup.
I bought this lens because of this video. I'm looking forward to using it. Thanks for all the settings advice in this video. 👍
I think you will be very happy with it.
Great review, in fact it was the one that convinced me to buy a second hand example in late 2023 (a Christmas present to myself…) Straight out of the box as it were it was brilliant - shooting mono as I do, then when I tried the focus peaking function on my Lumix GX8 I started getting disappointing results similar to the worst auto focus ones. So my question from the floor Mark, is what should I turn off in my in-body settings for consistent results? Thanks again for your channel and a happy and healthy new year to you✌️🌹
Gracias por el video. Haces un muy buen trabajo y uno se entusiasma con lentes que no imaginaba que fuesen tan buenos
I just bought it yesterday and can't wait to try it out!
You will be super happy.
Hey Mark- I was in your home town in January. I bought a new copy of this lens to go with my M6 mk2. While I agree mostly with your assessment of the lens, I do find it slightly soft especially when pixel peeping at 300 per cent. Maybe that is unfair. The lens cap is also loose and I have fo secure it with tape. I had screamingly sharper results for astro using the Sigma 16mm f1.4. So that is my preferred astro. Love your channel, and I hope all is well- x
Thanks, this was very insightful. There is a Samyang 12 mm with f2.2, are those two lenses otherwise identical in their overall qualities?
Hi Mark. Today I bought my first camera (sony a6000) so I am a beginner. I wanted to buy a lens for my camera and I read that there is a new auto-focused Rokinon lens. Since I am a beginner, I am afraid of messing my photos of the stars / panoramic photos so I was considering to buy the auto-focus lens but is very expensive. After watching your video I think I will buy a second-hand manual focused lens. According to what I understood from your video, you just have to configure the lens manually once and that's it.
Correct, manual focus is much better for star photos too.
Have the same setup as you, and this lens is honestly fantastic for Astro, hiking and other ideas you might have for it’s use 😊
I got the Samyang version for my Fujifilm cameras. It was a little cheaper than the Rokinon at the time. ❤ It works great for Milky Way time lapse photography.
2:24 The photos you are tanking? Great slip and true for me :). I have this lens on the way here and look forward to it. Great tips.
Thanks for uploading- you answered ALL my questions and concerns will go out and buy one ( just subscribed! )
Awesome video and great shots! Any chance you'll do a video showing how you did some of these astro shots like to one you opened with in the video?
Yes, for sure, it’s on my to do list.
@@markwiemels Awesome!
Hope you hit a million subs man! I appreciate the video and much needed as I just picked this up for my gaming shot with two people in frame.
thx a lot. you answered all my questions. excellent
Great to hear!
Thank you for making this video and your recommendations. Got yourself a subscriber. Cheers.
I first watched your video of all the fav lenses for M50 and this one really stood out (already have the 15-45 kit, 32mm f1.4 and 55-250mm EF zoom) from the rest. This will be my next purchase, as I really want that good wide angle and astro capabilities. 😄
So good job!
You will love it.
Absolutely great lens for astrophotography. Sharp, fast and takes in a lot of light. 🎉
"Great review! I'm using a Sony Alpha III and I'm looking to get into astrophotography. What FE lens would you recommend for capturing stunning night skies and star fields with this camera? Any specific lens that offers a good balance between image quality, wide aperture, and affordability?"
Great video. Would you recommend a filter when shooting stars?
Yeah, ND-Filter 😪😂
Have you tried the Rokinon 12mm T2.2 Cine lens? This popped up while searching for the Rokinon in your video, and wanted your take on the two lenses for the M6 mkii. Many thanks! Been enjoying your videos.
Sorry, I have not tested that one, so could not say.
This is the lens I need to capture them blinkers in the sky. Thanks for the deep dive.
Great video Sir and definitely a lens on my list to own
Thanks, yes it's one of my favourites.
Glad you made this vid I just learned about APS-C after buying a used T3i recently. I didn't like finding out that the small amount of experience with 35mm would not be applicable but my cool wide to standard range kit lens was basically a 29-89mm. thanks to your reviews I have options. I like the EF-M 11-22 with the Rokinon 12mm f2, and a canon 50mm 1.8 for a portrait lens stand in I think I will be set up for fun. A question I do have is: I saw that there is a macro extension (what do you call them?) for the 11-22mm is there one one for the Rokinon 12mm, do I even need one? I have never had one of these add on Macro lenses?
Those tubes will work on any lens.
Great review! Thank you! I used your link to buy all of my black Friday purchases. I hope you get the revenue! Ps you remind me of Stu from the hangover.
Yes, I get that a lot, it the wide angle lens I use.
Great review. Really informative, in both technical and ergonomic aspects. Thanks a lot Mark. I was confused on which wide angle to go for, for my Sony Alpha mirrorless cameras. Guess I'll go with this. :)
Can't go wrong.
Nice work. Excellent. Love it.
Thank you so much!
Shame this isn’t available for ef or rf
@Mark I have a question. Probably you can answer, I hope so.. I consider to buy the Samyang 12mm f/2.0 AF for my Fujifilm XT4 this lens has autofocus but for manual focus not the numbers as with the lens in your video. I don't know what to do. Buy your lens or buy this specific lens. I want to use it for film, street and astro. Thank you very much!
Hi, Mark. Thank you so much for your review. I have a Canon 80D and R7. Would this lens work with either?
Not the 80D, if there is an RF mount version it will work on the R7, but I’m not sure there is. You should be able to search that up thought.
Amazing lens! Thank you for this great review!
You are most welcome.
few years ago i bought the 7 artisans 12mm.i was disappointed, then i found this Samyang on you tube ..i use it mostly wen am in turkey up in the high mountains. Leave it on f.4 or near and makes my a6500 a point and shoot camera ..and night shots city scapes are a dream ..and for street i like to get close super lens ..
Yes, it's such a great lens for the price. One of my most recommended lenses.
Is the main shot of you at the desk shot with this lens? Thank you, awesome video
The main video lens is a 16mm fujifilm.
Would you be able to do a video on how to set up your camera using this lens?
I have been meaning to for ages.
Thanks
Nice video, Is it available for EF-S camera such as T7i camera or would it require an adapter?
Thank you very much for this video, i was wondering if you have tried the autofocus version of this lens? i just saw it in Amazon.
I have not. From what others have said, it's optically not quite as good, but still very good, and you get autofocus. If you are primarily buying for astro, you are much better off with a manual lens, for general purpose photo and video, the autofocus lens makes more sense.
@@markwiemels thank you very much for your explanation, really appreciate it 👍👍
Ok, convinced, ordered one. Thanks Mark
You will love it.
Great review? For real estate, location scouting, what settings should I use for interior? I tend to stand in the corners and then the linear “bow” will happen in high ceiling areas. Thoughts?
Shoot at f11, use a tripod, if there is too much distortion you can look for an editing program to correct it.
Mark, I just came across your youtube channel and yes I did subscribed, my question about the lenes, will thay fit on nikon camras? I plan to purchase D7500 or a D7200. What are your thoughts.
It’s a mirrorless lens only.
My copy of it overshoots infinity focus by enough that it is not easily noticeable on the screen of the camera but when viewed on a screen the images are ruined, quite annoying not being able to trust the markings
The infinity marking is at the start of the little L shape. Maybe yours is off, buy I was getting this wrong at first, so thought I should mention just in case.
Hey thanks for this video. One question for you. I use a Lumix G9 and when lenses such as this one without electronics are attached and you power the camera on, it asks if you want to change the current focal length. My question is, since the Lumix G9 is a MFT camera, should I actually dial this prompt to 12mm, or should it be half of that on a MFT camera. Many thanks!
The "bang for buck" on this thing is unmatched. It's crazy. I ALWAYS have it with me.
Agree.
This lens looks so awesome! *adds to cart* :')
How would you say the sharpness compares with the Rokinon 8mm f2.8 II? If you've tried that lens as well...
Have not tried that one yet.
What Bahtinov mask will work with the petal-Shaped Lens Hood?
Great information about this lens Mark, is it true that f5.6 is the sharpest f stop for this lens?
It’s pretty good all around, and I have not done any clinical testing, but for most lenses it’s in the 5.6-8 range.
I use canon m50, is there any lenses that wider and faster than this for my canon?
This newbie thanks you tons and tons. 😊
Thank you for this video!!
Mark Please make an astrophotography timelapse video
It's on my list.
@@markwiemels you're not just an awesome RUclipsr but an awesome person
I would be buying this for my apsc canon 7d mark 2.. Will the crop cause a distortion of angles at the edges and the middle? Because I'm not looking for a fish eye affect. I just want a wide angle for broad safari shots. Please advise. Thank you
I wish I used it more, can't find too many instances in which I prefer or over the ultra wide on my phone with good light
Need to use it for long exposure, something the phone can’t do.
How does this compare to Samyang's new model? They added weather sealing and AF to the lens.
They are very similar. Some are saying the older, manual focus lens, is a little better optically, but I have not had them side by side. For astro I would get the manual lens for sure.
Can you test this lens against sigma 16mm, f1.4 for astrophotography?
I assume teh EF adapter would be necessary for a canon r7?
What about fashion photos? It works, right?
considering new AF version, but I think this older manual has a crisper image quality. Have you noticed a difference in image quality between new AF and this manual version ?
I have not tested the AF version, but have seen the same reports about sharpness.
@@markwiemels i did find a Pro RUclipsr that did an apples to apples comparison, unfortunately there is a notable loss of image clarity towards the edges of the AF version compared to the old manual. Both look same in center at same F stop.
Had the MF which I replaced with the AF and I think it's the same image quality (maybe the AF is slighly better with flare control due to better coatings). You can confirm it by watching Christopher Frost's reviews of the lenses. AF version has also the advantage of better sunstars
Mark…can you do a video on hyperfocal distance with this lens…
Which do you prefer? TTartisan 10 f2 or the Rokinon/Samyang 12 f2
10mm and 12mm are quite different. So you should chose based on preferred field of view, one is not better in my opinion. 12mm tends to be little more versatile and easy to use. 10mm is more immersive (think wrap around environments, in a forrest, historic buildings etc).
@@markwiemels thanks! A used 12 seems more versatile
Would you recommend this for real estate videography and photography?
Yes, it's good for both, but would need to use the lens on a gimbal for video.
@@markwiemels Definitely agree, I have the Zhiyun Weebil S gimbal. Just ordered this Rokinon 12mm f/2.0 lens. The perfect lens for what I need right now. Mounts directly on the M50. Which is a plus since I don't like the added weight of an adapter or booster. I prefer a manual lens and this Rokinon will make shooting real estate easy and fun for me. I'm a 20+ year tv cameraman and getting my own focus is who I am, definitely old school. 😎📷
I have a full frame camera, and if im not mistaken this is a cropped/half sensor. My question is can i use this lense on my A7ii?
You can use it but only in APSC crop mode or cropping manually afterwards.
I have 3 Rokinon lenses. 12, 16, and 24mm
Great setup.
Spot-on infinity focus is actually bad for astrophotography - because the actual position of the focus drifts with the temperature. It's far better to have an overshot on infinity, with the actual infinity positioned slighty prior to the mark - so you have some room for adjustment. I have this issue with 10mm f/2.8 Samyang lens - on cold nights (-20C and below) the stars are razor sharp, while in warm weather (+20C and above) the lens can't focus on the infinity, and the stars are slightly bloated.
4:09 - this photo makes me question the use of this lens for astrophotography. You can see that the left part of the image is completely destroyed and the stars are out of focus, while the right side of the image is much better. But I guess this is just the typical quality control of Samyang lenses - it's simply nonexistent. Other lens of the same model may perform far better.
I bought a used Samyang 14mm for my 6D and I love it. I think it was about 250 Euro and it is in excellent shape.
Awesome, they make some great lenses, can't really go wrong.
Wondering about manufacturing output quality? how good is the constancy in optical quality across the production. It would be a shame to get a dud copy. I notice the early versions where silver nose, then black/finally black AF versions. Anybody know if the early silver versions are all good? or did they push out better consistency from the factory in Korea, later on?
I have not seen any reports of issues with sample variation on this lens.
Good to hear, thanks for the heads up.@@markwiemels
Hello, When I take a photograph of the Milky Way with ROKININ 12mm, I see that there is a lot of lighting towards the center of the photo, is this normal?
Oh, man. My bank account is not happy because of your videos on these ef-m lenses. I just bought the M6 mkii as my travel/everyday fun camera, and already I'm considering getting this Rokinon, the Meike 6.5 and the Canon 55-200, in addition to the 22mm f2 pancake I also just purchased. Nope, not happy at all.
I understand! I bought all those too.
@@markwiemels I want that 28mm macro, but I also want a macro for my 5d mkiv. Do you have a recommendation for an EF macro I could use on both bodies?
What would be equiv model for an R7?
I'm finding a Full frame RF 14mm f2.8 and a 10mm APS-C EF 10mm f2.8.

Hi, good. Is this lens compatible with my sony alpha 7 iii camera?
I see a lot of coma on the outside edges of the astro shots ⭐
How does the 4k crop perform on this lens? The m50 kit lens and my sigma 16mm are not wide enough for me when I shoot 4k.
Yea, it’s pretty good for that, I have shot with it like that in the past. The manual focus also eliminates the unusable autofocus in that mode.
I have the Sigma 16mm f1.4 lens on an M50 too and while the 1080p is great, the 4k crop is brutal. Definitely interested in getting this shooting 4k for real estate.
what filters do you use for your astro photography
None.
Can that 12mm lens be used on a Canon R7?
I got my new lens! But, something’s wrong… I can view through it, but the shutter and video recording button doesn’t appear to work with this lens. Do I have to make a setting change on my canon M6?? My other Canon EF-m lenses work just fine. I use Manual for stills and video.
To use this lens with my a6400 I had to go into settings and select ‘allow shutter to release without lens on’. This is because the Rokinon 12 mm is a fully manual lens and doesn’t have the electrical contacts which enable the lens and camera to communicate. Otherwise the camera ‘thinks’ there isn’t a lens affixed and prevents the shutter from operating. Hope this helps.
Do you or even recommend using a speed booster with this lens? I curretnly have an m50 and a viltrox speed booster but it doesnt fit the speed booster model I have,
No. No need.
this lens or TTArtisan 17mm F1.4 wich one is better astrophotography
which one you consider bro
Can you use it or adapt it with a ring to a canon t3i (canon ef)?
no.
Can you test the Brightin-Star 7.5mm F2.8 for the EF-M mount? It’s currently $119 USD on Amazon.
I have a similar 7artisan lens I will be reviewing.
Which these ultra wide angle lenses do you suggest for indoor real estate videography in a low light noisy situation with the Sony ZV-E10 camera ?
👇
1. Sony 11mm f.1/8
2. Samyang 12mm
3. Rokinon 12mm
4. Tamron 11-20mm
5. Viltrox 13mm F1.4
Viltrox 13mm for me, best lens I have ever used on my ZV-E10
Why buy something for the eos-M system? Didn't you heard the news?
What news? .
They also have an AF version!
Yes, I should have mentioned that!
Can the lens be used or acceptable in full frame camera?
how does it compare to the 14 mm version, hav u tried that one. cheers
No, I have not.
I love mine but very often there is a light source somewhere, especially indoors that causes severe glare and drastically reduces the image contrast, have you experienced this? Any solution? - I try to hide the light source with my hand with visible but limited success but it's not great.
If you are using a filter, take it off to make sure it's not a reflection in the filter. Otherwise, you are doing what I would do.
@@markwiemels no filter, I recorded a short video of this happening on my channel if you’re curious, it’s very frustrating as any light source causes glare and loss of focus, I’m looking at the viltrox 13mm potentially to replace the 12mm but that lens is pretty huge/heavy. Too many shots on the 12mm are ruined by some light source somewhere washing out the image :(
how does this lens in apsc camera compare with sanyang 18mm in FF camera? it theoretically would have some pov, but really curious about the distortion comparison
I recommend the 20mm lens, linked in the description.

Did you figure it out? If not try to go to settings then allow shutter realease without lens on
They make this in AF model cost not much more, has anyone tried this on a Sony Infrared full spectrum camera. I’m worried about hotspots
Jumped over from Prime Day video to check it out SOLD US$188 👍👍👍
Do i need to get the samyang dock?
No, it’s manual focus, no electronics.
I bought the lens to use it for video, but it makes a constant hissing noise which ruins the whole recording. Is this normal? I mean it starts hissing, as soon as I start focusing and the noise does not stop even when my Sony 6700 has found the focus.
This video is about a manual focus lens, there should be no noise at all.
Hi Mark, I just got this lens of Samyang to use with my Sony a7, and i have a really strong circle vignette on the frame... Is it normal?
It's a crop sensor lens, so you need to shoot in crop mode.
The samyang 18mm f/2.8 is the full frame equivalent for this lens here
Stabilisation without the z is messed up man! You've been out of country for too long. All humor aside, can you get me started on some base settings with this lens on my camera (X-S10 if it matters) for my first time shooting our stars and galaxy? Thank you.
Try f2, iso 800-1600, shutter 15-30 seconds. Just keep playing with the iso and shutter until it looks good. Shoot raw and jpg, for flexibly in editing.
@@markwiemels Thank you Mark. Wilco
will this work with sony e mount?
Yes just check when you purchase it that it's e-mount, but note it will not work on Full Frame. Full frame equivalent is 20mm F1.8
