Here at Calvey Homestead, we are trying to become as self-sufficient as possible. We grow a garden every year and raise a good portion of our own meat. We also try to support local farms as much as possible. We love cooking, canning, and preserving. We are lucky enough to have other family members who live this lifestyle as well. We currently live in a 43 foot fifth wheel camper that is stationary on my parents’ farm. Follow us for a glimpse into our happy homestead!

The fact that you give your son coffee as a means to help his attention span verses throwing him into the system with medicine is awesome. I absolutely love it. We homeschool but I know if we didn’t, at least two of our kids would be labeled something when in reality, some kids are just more active physically and mentally! Homeschool helps because they don’t do tedious busy work for 6 hours. It’s focus on the work, get it done, and be active the rest of the day. Schools make kids ADD……😅

Yes!!!! 👏🏻 I couldn’t agree with you more. I’ve contemplated homeschool for him because he just doesn’t do well sitting and doing work for long stretches of time. Nothing against his teacher AT ALL because she is amazing with him but it’s hard to differentiate all lessons for every child’s needs. He just doesn’t do amazing in a school setting even though he’s extremely smart.

Schools do not make kids ADHD. Period. It is an inherent condition that is hereditary. It lasts a lifetime. Please educate yourself.

By way of encouragement, most boys do not want to pay attention to things they are not interested in. My son(I have 4 kids who are all grown college educated and doing just fine), was no different in the "paying attention" area. We sent him to a private kindergarten and he did OK. His teacher at graduation almost threatened us as parents if we put him in public school. The teacher said he was very bright, too bright for a school room where kids are basically made to sit for hours while their little brains shut down. She said he would most likely be labeled with some sort of attention problem and given meds. We immediately started homeschooling all 4 kids. We gave my son a stack of books he was required to read by the end of the school year, made sure he had basic math and grammar skills and let him go.(He now works for a University as a Systems Analysist). If kids know the sit down learning is no more than 2-4 hours a day, and that divided(in other words not just sitting for 4 hours), and the rest of the day to play, learn music, sports, they will work hard to finish the sit-down stuff to get to the fun stuff. We are a skiing family so 3-4 days a week during the winter days were spent skiing--in the afternoon ONLY after the 3-4 hours of sit down work was done. The summers were spent with swimming, life saving classes, white-water rafting, summer theater and fun. We had all four in some sort of music which was not considered sit down time during the school year.
Anyway, sorry for the long post, but little kids are not made to sit in classrooms all day--just my opinion. I believe the problem is not attention, but being locked up all day. Good luck with your little son.

Thank you for your kind words. I have been contemplating homeschooling pretty seriously. I haven’t taken the leap. I think I’m nervous to do it. My son is making amazing progress in school but doesn’t fit the “public school requirements.” It is a bit frustrating because I know he just cannot sit there all day long and work work work. It’s not how me learns. *sigh* I’m trying to figure out what will be best for him. Thank you so much! 🥰🥰

That's awesome but it's also really, really, really important not to deny a very real neuro difference that many people have and the challenges that come with it. It is certainly true that sitting all day is hard for most of us. But if her son has ADHD, please don't dismiss away a very real challenge they have to manage because "boys will be boys." Thanks for your supportive feedback, regardless.

So many people give their kids the stimulant medications so there should never be an issue of you using a natural stimulant. Many cultures also give it to their children. Bravo mom for thinking outside the box and helping your son.

The coffee is an excellent natural stimulant for your son. Don’t ever feel bad for doing the most natural ways. Great step on trying to eliminate the dies. Also try to avoid the high fructose corn syrup. With my son all of these changes helped him. Keep up the good work. You are doing great!

Don’t feel bad about the coffee thing. I always bring up that to moms because I had a dear friend who gave her son one coffee bean daily before they began their homeschool day. Way better than the Red Bull/energy drinks that are loaded with nasty stuff. And staying away from dyes will help sooo much!!

Coffee is the best. I was known as hyper when I was little. My grandma who raised me noticed that when I would “sneak” sips of her coffee it would calm me, relax me. So every morning she would make her coffee with a lot of cream some sugar leave it on the table so I could “sneak” sips. Coffee still relaxes me to this day and I drink my coffee black.

I got several bags of spices that were in bags that seemed too big. I bet they’re having trouble sourcing smaller bags. Supply chain issue come for us all. 😂

We love the finely grated parmesan cheese. I had been ordering two 1 lb. bags at a time but we love so much that I ordered the five lb. container that I will be picking up day after tomorrow. I keep a jar of it in the refrigerator and the rest in freezer until needed. We have been ordering from Azure for a couple of years now and love buying from them.

I'd love to know your thoughts on that plain Nancy's yogurt, assuming you've eaten it by now?
Also we use an excessive amount of sour cream, lol. I need to get some of those!

We eat so much sour cream too! 🤣
We liked the yogurt! It’s tangy, so as long as you like the tang. It wasn’t necessarily anything super special but I like the fact it’s full of probiotics!

Girrrrrl don’t be ashamed! Coffee is a NATURAL way to help with ADHD (as a mom with ADHD myself and a daughter with autism) and we use caffeine at times ourselves! For both of us! It beats the side effects of the medicine they want to prescribe.

He has a small specific cabinet just for his snacks. He typically eats one a day (the one I send him to school with) but he chooses which one he would prefer.

Hello, I don’t know if you make your vanilla with the vegetable glycerin but i have and it turned out great. I cooked it in the insta pot for 25 mins and it’s sooo good. I also did vodka vanilla. We use the glycerin vanilla in parfaits and yogurt. Great haul and another great video♥🇨🇦

You don’t have to explain yourself or feel bad. Your kitchen, your rules. I don’t like that as a society we feel the need to “explain” ourselves. You are amazing and I know you are doing what is best for you, your family and child!! I discovered that red dye caused my son to be angry and mean. We eliminated that and it was night & day difference. He is 32 years old and still has issues with it. Baby steps will help the changes stick. Love sweet leaf drops!!!
