    The Netherlands have the lowest repeat offence rate in the world. How? By treating their prisoners nicely. They give them an education and training, let them work and have visitors whenever; the only thing they can't do is leave. The prisoners get any rehab they need, they help make positive life changes instead of treating them like scum and it works. Maybe, if we treated those who commit a crime humanely, help them get back on their feet and not continue to punish them once they're out by refusing them places to rent or work because of their record people wouldn't keep going back.

    • @AlleenLoveHope
      @AlleenLoveHope 5 лет назад +405

      A big part of the problem is the privatized prison system; there's no incentive to actually rehabilitate offenders. Quite the opposite in fact.

    • @Em-hh6dz
      @Em-hh6dz 5 лет назад +234

      That's the thing, The Netherlands has a shortage of prisoners due to the lack of reoffenders and actually import them now; making them profitable by taking off the pressure from other countries' prison systems.

      @@Em-hh6dz Oh wow, I didn't know that. I wonder how those prisoners' recidivism rates are impacted by being imprisoned there vs how they're treated back in their home country afterwards (assuming its a society that "red flags" them for life)

    My daughter was sent to prison and lost her husband and all four children. She spent a year in prison, after spending about a year in jail. Me and my sweetie visited her every Monday and never gave up on her. She now has her children back and has several grandchildren and has never gone back to the life she had before. She also has a wonderful job and has totally turned her life around. Thank you for telling your story.

      It’s true. I went in for a few hours once because it was St Patty’s Day, and you can abstain from alcohol and do everything right but in Indianapolis they will just round up a huge crowd and throw them in a paddy wagon regardless of whether anyone did anything illegal. There was one woman who was arrested because she had an opened bottle of cough syrup in her purse for her cold. They tried to release me in the middle of the night downtown without giving my belongings back. When I insisted they return my purse, they threw me in a tank and held me illegally for 3 hours after a judge released me. I finally got a Sergeant’s attention and he found it in minutes. Turns out they were just trying to steal my purse.

      I believe if we all practiced loving our neighbors? Life would be so much better. The basic things God tells us. I watch young people so proud of not believing in God, but then they're already on anti depression meds. Often because of this fear of being cancelled. God doesn't cancel, those who do only want people to be shamed for the rest of their lives! There's no forgiveness on that path. No grace, ever.
      If we look at stats going back to how many people believed in God in the 1950s until now, then you set that next to "how happy are you, most of the time?" Every time, the more people who believe in God? Happier, more able to deal with setbacks, lower depression and anxiety.
      I encourage people to find out for themselves, read the Bible, look at God. Look at Jesus. Every wise person I know who set out to prove God doesn't exist? Ended up with "Ok, all this evidence leads to God does exist. Those are my favorite teachers.

What helped me was I cut ties completely and I mean if I saw people in the store I used with I walked out and left before I could have any kind of conversation with them. I changed my number, if they came to the door my parents told them to go. The sad thing is you want to help them but when you're newly clean you can't you have to worry about yourself. It's hard at first but it does get easier.

I can see how some of them would view our soldiers as such. More so in Vietnam where more innocent civilians were killed.
      What they dont realize is, thats a tactic of guerilla warfare. They purposely send innocents out to harm our soldiers. It gets so bad that often a soldier cant tell between a civilian and an enemy as theyll look the same. Also nothing us perfect, its war afterall. Sometimes there is bad intell. Its often leaked or given to us for that intent alone. To make our soldiers look like monsters. In the end its not our soldiers at fault. They are just doing their jobs, following orders. If anyone wants to be upset, than take it out on the ones running the chess board. World politics cause war, mainly a lot of proxy wars. I rather not argue behind the semantics as why a country goes to war with another.
      Unfortunately its a part of our human nature. Especially in the middle east which is the very dawn of civilization. There has been war every since man started gathering to form cities, civilizations, and empires. Just for the simple fact alone that there has never been true peace anywhere across the planet at one time throughout human history. Thats a long time we are talking over 20k yrs ago. Its imbedded in our nature unfortunately like i said. Anyways thank you for serving our country all politics aside. You were fighting for the brother beside you and so you could come home. Our system can be the scariest thing! Seems many times people who dont deserve prison get it and those who do are let out! A boy I grew up with, very close family friend, had similar situation. He was raised by a very Christian family. they walked the line, they didnt even curse! Great family. He grew up, graduated college and became a teacher. At 25 was out with 3 friends, he had a couple of beers, his friends had more and were pretty tipsy so he drove. Another car hit them head on, it was an elderly couple. the old man in the other car died. His friend in his car also died. They charged him with manslaughter bc with a blood test they found alcohol in system!! even though he wasn't speeding and didnt cause tbe accident! He ended up getting 5yrs!! I think he got out on parole at some point. It took him 15yrs to get his teaching license back, moved 3 states away and began a new life. Hes now married with 3 kids, teacher and football coach. Living a great life. Turned out good but he lost alot of his life

    I really appreciate you telling your story. I met a friend right after he got out of prison. I learned about his record shortly after we started talking. At the time he was a pretty angry guy. He was mad at himself, mad at the world, mad at everything and everyone. Today, three years later, he's the happiest and most successful he's ever been. He was able to turn his life around because he had a few people who supported him and accepted him. Prison isn't meant to be glamorous, but treating people worse than animals isn't acceptable. Should people in prison have Egyptian cotton sheets on their beds and lobster tail for dinner? Of course not. But they do deserve to be treated with the most basic of dignity. They deserve clean living spaces and a mattress that isn't going to kill their back. Food that hasn't been dropped on the floor or spit in. Guards that don't treat them like scum. The punishment is losing their freedom. The punishment isn't starvation, mold, and chiropractic issues. That's the part that people forget. And what happens when you treat people worse than animals? They act like feral animals. Because why wouldn't they? Prison reform needs to happen and it needs to happen YESTERDAY!

      I mean she said like 80%+? go back to prison after they are out. Do you really think people would fear jail if they had what you say they should? It sounds like a hotel to me. Also I do not agree with the they "deserve" part. What do you mean they deserve? Some of these people have done aweful things. What about the victims of murderers, abusers etc, don't they deserve the basic right to live their life, to not feel like they just exist for someone else's pleasure? I get it, you see a beutiful, reformed lady and you feel for her but that does not mean prison should be a reward. You do realise, even Christina said it, that many of those prisoners don't care. If the guards are soft prisoners will not fear them I don't think you realise what type of people they are dealing with. Most people who are in prison are "feral animals" even before they got in and you think by treating them like they have not comitted a crime would make them a better person? Like really? Yes people can change but most of the time they don't as it is too late.

      Yes it is Cristina I was put in prison because I married the wrong man and being with him got me in trouble. I wasn’t guilty of my charges but yes, it shaped a different but good path for me ♥️

    I almost went to military prison for a stupid thing I said when I was drunk and trying to take justice into my own hands. I would have been facing 2 felonies and I’m only 23 with a 3 year old and career I would have lost. I am so grateful that because of a tiny flaw I was able to not face any charges (basically my get out of jail free card) and I learned my lesson for sure (plus as if writing this I’m 32 days sober!)

      Penelope Kristan it’s military. The military takes a lot of things seriously when you are enlisted.

    Three years in felony prison would imply that the charges are fairly significant. You are really intriguing and I would love to know more surrounding this part of your past.That's amazing you found religion and turned your life around. It can be done.I have a predisposition to utilize space and caution when socially engaging with convicts and people with past lengthy prison sentences but your story is a true inspiration.

    I was mentally ill after having my first child, and got into an altercation with my parents. I went to jail 3 times for domestic assault. The judge dropped it down from a felony to a class A misdemeanor due to my illness. I was not doing well mentally at the time. I was released In Jan 2014 the day after my 20th Birthday, and haven't gone back since. I'm now 28.

      Good for you! It is really the exceptional people who can learn from their mistakes, especially when it leads to something as serious as incarceration. I am proud for you even if I do not know you.

      Sounds like my exact story girl. My grandparents called the cops on me for domestic after my first child. I've been to jail three times since then. Doing better now and hoping to stay that way to get off probation. Glad to hear a success story!

      @@Gblack2014 - keep your hands to yourself, learn to walk away, and get therapy! This is speaking from experience, not a place of judgement.
      Postpartum depression is not only real, its *incredibly painful*- left untreated, it can easily turn into excessive irritability and rage! Get yourself into therapy, and start some family counseling. If you do the WORK and humble yourself, you will get through this ❤️ May God bless you and your family. Best of luck ❤️

    I discovered your channel about two weeks ago, and immediately was intrigued. I'm 56, and you reminded me of a cross between Annie Potts and Rebecca Gayheart. Gorgeous, smart, and knowledgeable. Until yesterday, I didn't know your past. The many other true crime channels we don't know much about their hosts. With you, knowing this about you makes me respect you and this channel the most. And I'm proud to be one of your "babies". You are the little sister that pulled out of a life that had no positive end, and you shined!!!!
