- In this video I show how to make a DIY cable cam for your GoPro camera. This is an awesome project and defitly one you should check out. I was super impressed with how it came out, the speed the camera can get up to on this rig is crazy.

Dude! This is fantastic! I always wonder how to do this when seeing cable cams at sports events.
Great project! I love how you just dived in and started hacking it together rather than spending hours trying to design on a computer. Thanks for sharing your design, I'm looking for something to use to video my 1/10th scale 3D printed RC tank as it traverses my yard and I think this will do the trick.
This is one of the better diy gopro projects out there. Absolutely love it, might have to try it some time.
Awesome, man. I need to see about building something like this soon! 👍
FANTASTIC!!! This is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Thank-you sir!
This is sick ! thanks for the tips
Great build, having to do the same due to the delayed Wiral production. What thickness of rope did you use?
I might do this as a setup for an outdoor hockey game, definitely will get some cool shots.
That would be super cool!
Great video! Do you have a video that shows the footage?
Also, do you have issues with the balance effecting the tilt?
Hi, great diy project! What kind of pulley did you use? I don't find same as yours... Thx!
Superb idea!!
Amazing project, great work!
Thanks man!
This is awesome!!!
man.... you a boss , new subs ..pura vida
This is amazing! I've been thing about this ever since I saw the Wiral Lite
I saw a video for that the other day but without a gimbal on it the footage will suffer from swaying motion. It seem easy to get side to side motion with these cable cams as there is so much weight down low the cable cam turns into a pendulum.
Would this work with a dslr? thank you.
how is the gimbal connected? Is it self contained, do you have a link please thanks.
Really cool project. Only issue was the bending the plastic the wrong direction for the gimbal mount. The angled lean is because the center of gravity is not below the pulleys.
Great build awesome idea
Thanks for your support
This is epic! Thanks!
Thanks for the support!
Great Video, Great Build Idea, suggestions on how to you waterproof the unit for those of us who live in countries that are "moist" most days of the year (Scotland)
From the west coast of canada I feel your pain. I would maybe start with a waterproof RC car. The one I used is quite good, I drove it through a LOT of puddles while testing with no problems. If you put some vaseline on the battery connections and used a rain proof gimbal you should be good to go. The RC receiver and motor driver are fully encased in hot snot so water should not be able to get to the electronics to easily.
I ordered the RC car in your description and there is no motor mount. Any ideas on how to get this to still work? This was an expensive car
Yesss, I wanna see the mountain bike video
This is great. I have RC Cars as well. I love DIY projects.
Harkin blocks 😀. Classy 👍
Just great!
Thanks!
Because you were talking about the possible NEED to reduce the gear, increase your ratio by getting a larger pinion or several to determine which speed is best for you. Great idea for a cable cam. Have you ever considered 3D printing or hooking up with someone that prints? you'd be next level DIYer.
I have 3D printed in the past the problem is that not everyone has a 3D printer so basing projects around them minimise the amount of people who can follow along. That said the videos I did do on 3D printing did well so maybe it is time to give them another look. It did not help that my 3D printer was total crap. You can check out a few of the video here: ruclips.net/p/PLhceDTg-JOm9mp6xAWoNpgO0lZqsFn2KF
Rad DIY! Waiting for mountain bike video
Me too... lot of snow around now so it might be a little while
Nice video. I'd be worried about the long term impact of a small diameter brass gear on a kernmantle rope. That's gonna really rip the crap out of the outer sheathing. Gotta think there'd be a better choice for drive gear. Very creative work, though. This would be ideal for an Osmo Pocket.
Genius.... 👊🏽
Thanks man!
Pretty cool guide! What car did you use?
Not 100% sure, most cars will work. Mine was quite a small one with brushed motors.
i plan on using a attiny85 , set of 1$ receiver+transmitter board and mosfet to drive a servo that has a spring loaded grooved wheel on it. that way it is auto-adjustable and can be controlled wirelessly for speed and duration. total cost about 10$ for everything.
now i just need to receive my modules and component from china...
Hello I’m planning on getting a GoPro soon can somebody tell me which GoPro is the best?
HERO5 or HERO6 Black. I would stay away from the session.
So rad! I am a professional mtb videographer, and really want to build this. What is the plastic plate you used for the rig? I want to keep it as light as possible and this looks like the best way
whoops, just caught that you said it was a cutting board, haha, that is amazing
any chance you can advise where to get those pulleys? I checked locally without luck, and can't find them on amazon. Thank you!
Where are you located? I got mine at a local boat store. The block is called Bullet Classic 29 mm Cheek Bullet Block you can find it on the manufacturer website here: www.harken.com/productdetail.aspx?id=5035&taxid=424 they have them at West Marine: www.westmarine.com/buy/harken--bullet-wire-cheek-block--196279?recordNum=2 but I think I would get this one instead: www.westmarine.com/buy/harken--29mm-carbo-air-cheek-block--2042331?recordNum=3 It is a bit cheaper and looks like it would be easier to mount. The blocks I used are 29mm but if you wanted to be able to use it with larger rope you could move up to the 40mm.
I used thin cutting board for my build, most dollar stores have it for cheap and you can bend it with a heat gun or even a hair dryer.
Brother everything is good but you used two rope the balance of stand base is good
good joob bro ✔
Dude this is fucking awesome. Been trying to think of a way to follow my dog off the porch while he chases squirrels. I was planning on doing a two pulley manual type system but I think I'm about to go but an rc car
There are always cheap RC cars at thrift stores and yard sales. Brilliant build.
This is a really good point. The only trick with them is to find the charger. I have got one or two RC cars at the local VV and neither have had the charger with them. If they run off Lipos like this car it is no problem but but chargers for older custom batteries can be hard to find.
you should have put a rubber wheel on the gear instead of dropping the motor...
Yeah this could have been a good though. It might have given me better traction.
empire of dirt? i think i have found an AvE fan in the wild
You know it!
Yeah, I thought he might mention the dooblidoo.
As a sailor I spy some expensive Harken blocks👀
That is why it rolls so good
Wiral cam just got punked 😂
Drone could do that pretty easily
elmin2323 I think a drone is a bit more expensive and can’t do stuff like flying in a dense forest safely
no through the forest
A drone would be easier. Just saying. . .lol
If you have a drone it would be easier, but in tight trees or in places where you can not fly a drone this is a cool alternative.
and a lot more expensive
Getting medium to high speed tracking shots with a drone in a dense forest or heavily populated area is next to impossible. Especially so if you're a one man operation trying to shoot video of yourself. I know because I have 2 drones that I use for this very purpose. A cable cam like this is priceless.
