Really cool idea. I like the little bit of shaking at the start; gives the look of a hand-held shot as it follows the talent. Perfect for the one man crew.

I love your DIY projects. This was especially interesting.
I contributed to a Kickstarter campaign for the Wiral LITE Cable Cam. It's a great prosumer device and works well. Now you can buy it for $400, so yours beats it on price alone. You can use the remote to control the movement speed and direction. It does have a time lapse mode with three speeds. I've had my Panasonic GH4 on it, which is near the limit of it's capacity. it is quite bouncy and sways back and forth a bit. If you are gentle with the speed changes it works out okay.
The best thing to put on it is a 360 camera with good digital stabilization built in. This solves most of the movement issues.

To be honest, not too bad for $10! The last videos weren't that shaky to me.
Here's my idea on how to improve your idea. So the phone ads wait causing the mechanism to shake and struggle right? Well what if we attach something small like a DJI Osmo Pocket? The camera is small enough to attach and it can hang upside down. Oh and also, it's a mini stabilizer cam! I'll try this idea if I'm able to find that gadget.
    Sorry for the long comment.

Nice idea, always appreciate your inventiveness! Maybe try adding a cheap winch to one end to take out the slack as to minimise the sway and give the cam-car a little less elevation to deal with for a more constant speed.

  • @00Skyfox

I think you can get very high strength fishing line that has a very thin steel cable core. That would allow you to pull the line much more taut, and it would be able to support the weight of the rig without stretching as much. Either way, this is a great idea to try for small cameras!

  • @RobbsHomemadeLife

I wonder if a spinning wheel below would stabilize it? You would only need the plate to spin for a moment so maybe you could just have a central hub that could be engaged with an electric drill to get it spinning so the plate would not need a motor, just a bearing and a way to attach it to the bottom of the camera.

I wonder if either a higher poundage monofilament would have fixed the sagging or a multi fiber fisher line like spider line would have been better?
    Great idea and video!

what if you used 550 paracord.. pulled it super tight.. and put an O ring on the drive wheel to give it grip over the plastic finish...

Your only using 8lbs fishing line try using a higher poundage and it shouldn’t stretch as much

try fluorocarbon or braided fishing line (fluorocarbon is clear) Both of these types of fishing line don't have as much to almost no stretch compared to monofilament. That is why the fishing line was stretching.

Honestly I think the cable rig itself is cool but what's holding this idea back from being sick, when it comes down to it, is just the low quality of the phone. Maybe if you used a GoPro it would be a bit more high res, as well as lighter?

    • @colethynne

@@knoptop Yes, I ran face track it works well. I found it works better though if you track an object, osmo pocket can loose tracking if you move out of frame to quick, or turn you head for to long. Currently working on your 360 degree PVC idea, great channel and content keep it up!
