Nice build. TIP: If you did NOT paint (also reduce cost & time) the metal conduit the pvc will slide more smoothly as paint is sticky, where pvc on metal will glide pretty well. Also a light sanding of the conduit with 200x sandpaper or steel wool will smooth things out followed by a dusting & hand wipe down with a very small amount of corn starch based talc will provide a clean and sufficient amount of "dry" lubrication. Happy DIY.
Went to hardware store for $10 in slider supplies.
Walked out being able to build a house.
Thanks Film Riot!
Michael Carr love it!
Chinese product from AliExpress is better but I am sick of shipping cost
Yes....I built a house and then couldn't afford to buy a camera.
The problem is...it looks DIY.
Good concept for a non-production DIY rig. Two quick & cheap improvements: 1) use Johnson Paste Wax or equivalent to lube the slider; and, 2) put pvc inside the open end of the couplers to further reduce wiggle. For a couple bucks: add a push-pull handle to eliminate the rags.
you can easily add a motor like this: ruclips.net/video/XSJGQf82sg8/видео.html
Whats great about this is that you can make this as long as you want. Thats really really helpful because huge sliders cost A LOT.
brooooooooooooooooo wtf, i honestly felt like i watched y'all before... i watched y'alls videos when i was like 9-12 hahaha AND..... after 9 years im back to watching y'all. Holyyyy.. nostalgia!!!
If you attach a thick rubber band to either side, you can pull it using that and the elasticity should give the movement a 'soft start'
Just don't paint the bars, that will make it run much smoother. Paint againts paint is pretty sticky :O
Best advice right here!
you can easily paint it just a little more effort and money,
What you could do if you really wanted some color is to paint your bars and what not, then to let them bake outside in the sun for at least 2 days, then get some 2000 and 3000 grit wet/ dry sand paper and wet sand the bars down till super smooth, then grab some light rubbing compound and go-over it a few times till you start to see it shine, then the extra little yard you could go is to the use automotive car wax and wax the bars. Should create an amazingly smooth and slippery surface.
Total might climb the project to the 20-25 dollar range, but still. You get pretty bars now! haha
@@TrendyKidzProduction Yes! sand...
One thing I always used to use when doing up fittings is silicone spray. It helped the fittings to slide off easier later when the lamps. needed replacing. It is no mess and very slippery.
a good alternative to the "rag skids/pullers" is velcro. Specifically, the non-hooked half of a velcro kit. Most are made with a sticky back for connecting and mounting. The non hooked half of velcro is just plush or fleeced fabric. it's soft and smooth and will slide very easily over the pipe or PVC tubing. A pulling line can then be connected to the slides on either side of the slide table. Nice build, easy and straight forward.
here's a cool trick i found on some other video: use a rubber band to pull the camera along the rig. It reduces the jerks and bumps in movement, makes for a smoother acceleration and deceleration in general!
Ryan: I'm using some of the leftovers from the other builds so if you've been following along from the other builds it will cost about $9, but if you're starting from scratch it'll cost...
Me: *wait for it*
Ryan: $12
Dang...this looks like work...I'm just gonna order one from Amazon.
I used lubricant on the track and took a long piece of fine cloth(like the cloth you get with your glasses) and then sowed black shoe strings to the sides and it ended up looking really cool! Also I added 2 small 4" bubble scales to each side so my view is always level.
You could use a rubber band to pull with instead of the fabric. That would also create a smoth starting motion. Thank you for a nice show. All the best Erik
I haven't read all 1600+ comments, but you could use a piece of adhesive felt (for the bottom of furniture legs) inside the slider Tees instead of the rags - would work as good, and be much more stealthy.
Hey, great video! I found that extending the base by 2 1/2 in. (PVC) on both sides really helped with the fluid motion of the camera. I actually do not need the rag anymore because it moves very well. You lose some length moving back and forth, but not too much as the electrical box eats up some of the extra PVC.
Vaseline for sliding motion and a big rubberband for the pull motion.. works wonders!
Exactly!
First thing I thought after seeing the rags was "Just lather those pipes with petroleum jelly" haha
Very nice until you get vaseline or other type of oil on your lens or viewfinder.
I wiped silicone lube on my rails...
deadendkid1968
Plural?? Are you a collector? :)
Thank you so much for all of your awesome videos! I really appreciate you making them
Awesome man! I used this video and tweaked it a little bit by using 2/4's instead of the electrical socket and the GoPro plate and it worked great!!
If you added a triangular piece of something (wood or whatever) then you could have a diagonal slider with the camera still being perfectly horizontal -would require fine tuning though for perfection.
or you could use a skateboard
+Tristan Culbert instructions unclear, killed school bus full of people and ate a dog in process.
+Captain Possible
That escaleted quickly.
lol
You really like Toblerone, don't you?
+Tristan Culbert With kryptonics & bean bag for that "film" look
Ditch the rags and use stick on felt furniture protectors. God bless PVC pipe. Thanks FR.
Nice....
I bet 2% of people that saw this actually tried the project.
or, 1%... or much less given that theres 3 mil views... so 150000 people probably didn't, won't, or can't.
I bet a child using Lincoln Logs could make a better slider
I got aggravated...
Porkchopper 98% people might be rich
For a video about building a device to give you smooth camera movement, the jerky camera work really took center stage.
Used the same technique for my rig, except I got some very fine sandpaper and polished the metal conduit. This makes it so that you cannot paint over, but will give you very smooth shots without needing vaseline or oil.
If you had the time, some Flitz metal buffing compound and a dremel with a buffing wheel you could really polish it to mirror finish.
Built it for 35$ in Canada. Slides very well with a litte parrafin on the EMT pipe.
Okay, so I kidnapped an elf from the north pole, adopted a 5-legged dog, but I can't find a hardware store. Any tips?
Just ask santa
MsKandahar Good idea, he has to have a hardware store up there.
Camroc37 That's where he makes all of the toys, and if the elves disobey, he beats them with a wrench
Ransom the elf for the parts you need.
Dwight Schrute but then he wouldn’t have an elf!
I would really like to see you make a curved camera slider, one that is similar to this that can move 360 or 180 at the least, maybe.
use a hula hoop and post your results. might work... never know till you try
You can take something a bit longer than the two towels, then connect them, and create a kind of grip to them to pull it. Wouldn t look that "cheap" and would be also easier to use!
Thought of a way to add to tripod. If sturdy enough, take a piece of flat iron bar and bolt to the bottom inside of the end. Then directly in the middle, drill and tap a hole to mount a quick release or directly to a tripod. And make sure bolts are going inward on the end boxes so you can still use it off the tripod.
You can use felt. It already has adhesive on one side. it's used to go on chair legs so it doesn't scratch the wood floor slides extremely well.
To make it slide well, use skateboard wax.
Thanks! works way better now!
+Dj TeeOh - You can also try sliding glass door wax like pt wax.
chip67art great idea
+Dj TeeOh or you could just use a skateboard
+william bill it's cheaper to use a skateboard *if* you already have one, if you don't have one it's cheaper to make this
Love these guys-
great project and storytelling ! however, in Austria / Europe the material would be more like $ 50 and this already buys a slider from amazon with bearings and all...
+Feldenkrais with Alfons agreed, don't get why we have to buy everything at least at twice the price. That ain't fair :/ not a huge expense but still...
same here in Australia
it's because our economies are doing a lot better
MadDeuceJuice "our"? Do you mean american ones or non-american ones?
AndreCorner 'straya mate. We are doing great(except everything is fucking expensive).
Out here saving bank accounts!! Such a hero. I'll try this. Thank you. I never knew you could cut screws... cool
you are such a smart and creative filmmaker to come up with all this, thanks for sharing them!!!
Directions unclear, accidentally made sick smoke rings with a vape
+Film Riot Question, the title states its around $10 in price, when he lists the items needed for this DIY he does not talk about the quick release plate. Searching them up all the quick release plates with the tightener on the sides (which in this DIY you need one with it on the side) they all cost over $20. Does anyone know where I can get a cheap quick release plate?
I get seasick watching this video moving.
Nice work. Instead of using the rags, you could put a coat of polyeurothane over the paint, then lightly steel wool it with super fine 0000. That should allow it to move smoothly.
Nice! The quick release plates on most video tripods can also slide a little on the head of the tripod. But not that much distance ofc :)
Do you sell any of the DYI rigs you make on this channel, if so I would definitely be interested! If anyone else reading this builds and sells rigs, feel free to reach out to me!
You are man, do it yourself....
It's called DIY, not LSEDIFYATBI! (let someone else do it for you and then buy it)
Who cares if it's DIY some people don't have te time or patient to do it ! If he wants to buy it he should be able to without being belittled or chastised for it
nigga aint got time to go and buy drills, saw's and pvp pipe cutters and screw cutters and so on, no very practical unless you have those random items laying around and will cost alot more than 10 dollars, so like my brotha said, sell one
roberto your all over the place
you speak too quick - but very educational
I use DIY for paid gigs all the time, what matters is the end product and nothing else.
Great idea and a lot cooler looking than my usual slider - which consists of the camera resting on a a small cushion on a plank ;)
3:47 A safety tip, hold some solid frame above the screws while cutting them so they no accidentally hit your face/eyes.
I learned this when I worked in building.
safety glasses.
Grammar lol.
This is hard to follow but maybe its because I know nothing about tools
Emma Von 😂😂😂I thought I was the only one...lol...I'm soooo stuck at T joint..😂
Emma Von
Emma Von Maybe it's time to find a man in your life. Spring time is the right time.
Michael Pereira tell me about it
take the video into home depot and some shelf jockey will fix you right up.
2.05-2.22 close your eyes. Thank you :)
1:20 Some nuts? More like DEEZ NUTZ!
HA, GOTEEM
Jordan O'C Lol thats what I was thinking
I watched thos when it came out 12 years ago. Thanks for teaching me back then.
The rags are a killer, another option would be some felt or even adhesive Velcro strips you could put inside the t joints. And a pull/push handle could easily fabricated.
No paint probably would have made it slide better.
Would this work with a GoPro as well?
No. GoPro wouldnt work with it because as he said it aint 'pro'. Hahaha
use silicon lubricant for the lubricant
I find that "Pledge" spray on furniture polish works well as a friction reducer. It provides a slick surface without attracting dust or dirt. Try it, you'll like it.
I see that on professional sets all the time.
I agree with John, Ryan. Using PAM is a horrible idea, the vegetable oil will attract tons of dirt and as it oxidizes over time, will become very sticky.
I recently made one, i spent under 6$, I just used about 10 feet of metal piping, then like a foot of 1 inch pvc the rest of the stuff I kinda just looked for around my house. I guess I got lucky with the other materials but it works great.
Items cost $10, Labor cost $100 :D
How a channel about filming can propose a video that is not stabilized and so much shaky ?
Cuz it’s handheld right now. The nature of what they’re recording needs the dynamics of hand held camera action.
@@aphr0d They don"t know stabilization softwares and/or specialized hardware nor what's a gimbal ? Very strange. It's so shaky that I feld sick during almost half an hour after seeing the video !
@@KNHSynths that’s interesting. I didn’t feel that way at all, maybe it’s a pet peeve of yours. I think they may have wanted to do that intentionally, as it had a certain vibe, but I’m no expert. There are plenty of other channels who stabilize their videos though so keep an eye! :)
@@aphr0d Yes, I spot that easily because I have an inner ear problem and I can't stand shaky cameras, subjective views, overly realistic video games and so on. It makes me want to vomit in a few seconds!
A lot of people can stand it and good for them, but it's not rational when you present equipment that allows you to shoot without shaking to do it while shaking :-)
@@KNHSynths yeah I understand you! That’s a good point, it would be better to demonstrate how effective this technique is by showing us through the camera
Why not use felt stripes you can get a roll for $3.50
+5Cents Media good idea
OR GRAPHITE POWDER OR THIN OIL
Its pretty cool that you mentioned Kessler crane. They are literally 1/4 mile from me right now!
All this vid did was make me feel less of a man.
I went outside in rage to beat someone up to recover manhood.
Now im doing 2 years in Rikers Island.
But a dude here is teaching me a lot about handy work.
was this filmed in Florida?
yup
Great share on this slider like it
There are also some pro grade sliders on sale now on digiht.com/procamerasliders for anyone looking for them
make one for me ill buy it for 15$ as soon as its ready
HTPlatypus u are what u eat
All Star King you can use wish online shopping
You guys almost need to make a second video where you don't try to talk at 2x speed and explain the building process more slowly. I would way rather a longer video where I'm not having to pause and rewind every three seconds to catch what's actually going on
the shrouded one You can slow down the speed.
To lube your pipes for smoother ride, lemon Pledge works well and smells nice. Used it on a DIY camera dolly track.
Amazing!! I just wrote a scene involving such camera work last night!! And then, I saw this!!!
skateboards anyone?
that's what i use. it works really well.
Can't use skateboard on grass and shit like that.
Charlie Hook I could imagine using a board of whatever material to put on a rough surface like grass or gravel for the skateboard to ride on.
James Furukawa I guess you could. not very practice though :s
Krykonator Roller skates.
rubberband instead of rags
And omit the paint on the pipes.
Even better. You can add mohair strips to the inside of the tees, and just glue a strap to either side of the slide plate.
"Revision3" Yep this is an old video.
Nice! Instead of the cloth I'd try the soft side of the Velcro squares or small felt pads. And I wouldn't spray it like someone else suggested.
Thanks for the tutorial. Instead of rags, use sticky back black felt cut to size... and a little rope to pull on or use counter weights on, to get movement. Great tutorial!
when i saw the dusts from the drilling i started blowing my screen...what's wrong with me?
crack does that ;)
just found an elf and I already have a dog with 5 legs, but I can't find a one with 4 legs.
Narglipyes.
itsme: I have the same problem. I've been looking for a dog with four legs for years! Found one with five legs (check), found one with three legs (check), even found one with two legs (turned out she already had a boyfriend), and almost trapped a dog with seven legs but it got away. I remember when I was a boy everybody had dogs with four legs! What happened?
You said four T-Joints, but only used two?
Omg the test shots -LOL!!!! Took me by surprise.
the models you have are on fire !
you should sell these for 150.00
LMAOOOOOO
KrisFilms
lol
fight me
You can buy sliders and dolly's for around that price, or just get a SLOLLY! Which is both a slider and dolly! Video here: ruclips.net/video/rKROEB5bTbU/видео.html
Why not attaching a mini motor to pull the camera?
a remote control rc servo
Cost
Fator Medo with a motor comes sound, and being so close to the camera, it would make filming very difficult
lol the ending killed me
Probably because this is a cheap diy but if it wasn't i bet he probably would.
Liar. U said 3/4 in the comment section so i got all 3/4 then u used 1/2 wtf man
Thanks so much for this inexpensive project! Ill defiantly tweet you a picture when in finished. You guys are hilarious!
Always love your ideas. If you had a good industrial catalog and some real tools and a bench...you might be dangerous. Kudos to you kid.
Too much camera shaking...getting nauseated. Maybe use a tripod some of the time? Or at least a stabilizer?
i just use an old skateboard
more nice
👍
cool
Hey Ryan! instead of using a rag you could use velcro ( any side) and if you cut it to size it looks a lot better.
Buy some velcro strips, throw out the rough hook side and keep the soft, fuzzy side. Peel the back off and stick it to the inside of the area that will contact the pipes. Smooth moves!
WHAT?
Or I don't hear well, or I did not understand this, but is he saying **half inch** emt pipe?
HowToEvery yes EMT = Electrical Metallic Tubing
I just realized he meant half inch wide.. So what a good length will be?
+HowToEvery 5 feet works pretty well.
good god! you're speaking/assembling sooo fast! :(
A tape merrrsuraaaa
Awesome camera slider. Thanks for sharing this video friend.
Dude this is an awesome idea I'm definitely doing this, great quality shots too!
Does a bunch of DIY film-making equipment, can't afford a tripod.
Adnan Ahmed thats what the diy is for
The test shots looks like a commercial 😂👏🏼
I laughed so much harder than I should have at how "tape measure" was said in the beginning. Thanks lol
I'm loving' the use of a Pentax camera!
Love this idea, we will have to use this for some of our youtube videos.
Fenomeno Ryan!!! Fenomenos Riot!!! Cheers Team!
Find a shoe or leather repair shop and buy some leather strips to make the liners/pull tabs. You can glue them in place or use a small plastic rivet (one at each end of the PVC tubing; drill a hole in the pvc, poke a hole in the leather, push the rivet through and finish the rivet). Leather can even be color coordinated!
Try sticking the loop (soft) side of some adhesive backed velcro inside the pvc that slides on the pipes. It's hidden and has a result similar to the rags on a smooth coat of glossy spray paint.
For lubrication you could use a silicon spray. It will make it smooth and does not get messy like the oils.
These videos are informative and hilarious. Makes my brain smile.
