- This week on Backyard FX, Erik and the crew build a Cable-Cam to achieve awesome cinematic camera angles like fly-thru and overhead shots. The Cable-Cam is like a camera dolly, but instead of being on a track, the camera is in the air on cables or rope, so you can shoot above the action. Erik shows you how to capture these tough angles like the pros for under $30
sometimes the easiest ideas are the hardest to think up. And here I was always focusing on utilizing my ground dolly. YOu guys rock.
You guys never let me down keep up the good work. Eric you rock.
Awesome, I don't ever build anything you make, but it is still awesome to see how u make the builds and the cool test films. Indymogul Rocks!!!
HOLY SHIT IS THAT A PORTAL GUN AT THE END!??!
Awesome episode guys, definately gonna use it. Can't wait till the next one. Literally. Do it now.
This was awesome when Eric was doing the show.
Rather than use duct tape, which leaves a residue, go to a theater or AV shop and get some gaffer's tape. It's more expensive but well worth it.
Last week, my production designer lost the roll I had in my kit; I have to get another one. She put it on top of her car and forgot to take it off before leaving. I'll miss you, gaff tape. (sniff)
Thank you, I have been waiting for this. I originally subscribed because of you building stuff.
Great episode Indymogul, but the funniest part was 05:13 Love his expression after "Maybe we'll build one in a future episode!" Hahahahaha :D
that first tip was bloody hellish scary. 4:51 I screamed like a girl when I saw how the robe broke. To be honest guys, this is sort of prototype of cable cam rig, I don't consider this as an offical and effecient rig; therefore I would never do it. Erick, you should dedicate an entire segment for rigs, cranes, stabilizers; but not something cheesy as this rig. Perfectionate those rigs and even better show us some scenes where they were used for.
Nice tutorial. I've always liked zip line rigs.
That was an awesome episode, I'm totally building one for my next film!
man that shit was gold! Indie mogul should stuff like that more often
If you're willing to spend an extra $20-$30, you can get some 550 paracord, which is about the same dimensions as the clothesline, but you could easily use 100 feet or more without breaking it (it is rated to 550 lbs after all). You would just have to tighten it several times to deal with the elasticity.
Thumbs up if John Petrucci is the handyman
Upgrade the rig with 1/8" coated cable and use two straps for going around trees with pulleys on each end will make a cable trolley that is strong and reliable.
I know that goes outside of the $30 you guys set for this project.
This is really good. I know that I'm deff gonna have one of my friends check this out for a movie we're gonna make, Thanks for the vid
Rather than using scrap wood for the base, use tin foil! It makes the rig look shiny and futuristic! Also, instead of using a camera, use your imagination :D
It would be cool to see more footage of the rig in use!
Hey Indy mogul I loved this episode and thought I would let you know :) Thanks for the great stuff! Also I thought those shots you took with the rig looked pretty professional
Adventure Time postcard on the wall FTW!
to save everyone from having to write down all the materials here:
#8 clothesline
3 clothesline pulleys
2 ratchet straps
5/16 bolt, wignuts and washers
four 5/16 by 2” Eye bolts
2 flat mending plates
1 8 foot 2x3
Scrap plywood ¾ inch
yes. holiday special build
Another great tutorial. Thanks and Peace.
Awesome. Also: Portal Gun in your FX?? schweet!
A weighty beast ! They sell cable version that are more suitable for the build.along with aluminum flat bar for the frame.
WOW! another great build! do you think u guys could make a Iron Man suit? I think it would be great.
Awesome! I'm Gonna Have To Make This One!
a bloody good tut
Love how that kid's little viewer submited video was 10 times easier and cheaper. You guys need to hire HIM XD
I was thinking of modifying it with longer cables and a pulley system for a long, overhead dolly shot
I have that exact chair in the end with the viewer quick tip lol
who hoo!!! third comment!!! awesome build keep it up!
Samn... Gotta love that intro riff.
Bwewbwedodedododoo Bwodedodedododo doo
Bewboodedlyoodlyoodly doo...
AWESOME.
What about using a bicycle wheel? The BBC Natural History Unit (Planet Earth) have used them in the jungle for some amazing shots.
As am also fourteen and I completely agree!
finally somone explains how your suppossed to mount the camera
IN SPACE!
Instead of clothesline rope, you can spend a little more and get coated wire cabling. Also, you will want to build posts you can take with you, attach and use or this thing will have very limited usefulness. You won't always find trees forty feet or less apart. LOL
I wish someone had a zipline camera from one building to the other that would be cool
Cool tripod...thingy. How about building an updated version of a robot and/or android? Yeah the last ones where cool and all, but why not revisit that and make them look better? Maybe even use the same technique you used to make the "Halo Armour"? Idk, just a thought.
anyone else watch this and be like "i understand" then you actually try to build it and your like"SLOW THE CRAP DOWN BRO!"
there was a garage band synth sample at the short sound clip @ 1:10
And when I want to use this kind for flight through the street for example... how can I hide ropes?
@XCMremy it was uploaded five years ago and was one of the first proper youtube web series
Lol cool- nice idea too- I'm waaaay too lazy to do their thing, and I don't have 35 bucks just laying around XD
very very useful !
how many times are you going to run the same commercial in the middle....can they mix it up a bit?...oh ya i used a wagon and a tripod once....
sick.. hvx 200?
are those magic cards in the back grownd ??
That was the Handheld Portal Device?
yes your featured
Oh how far we have come
that might come in useful thanks guys
can you make a single cable rig please, ive tried for months and have failed please do this for a future build
Good tip, but sheet metal as a rig and cables instead of weak clothes line would do the trick. ;)
Portal Gun?! YES PLEASE!!
Adventure time poster @ :56
indy mogul, can you do a floating effect for semi-cheap. Like when darth vad choaks someone and they float of the ground kinda...
hey eric i have i camera but the sound sucks. the only input/output is the a/v jack what can i go to get better sound
please, I want to see this one-rope system.
quick tip was good
What was the song used when he spun the wheel?
@30958ian You can redo all your sound in post, dub over the voices and do foley sound effects. It sounds great, I do it alot.
0:42 Adventure time.
oh, that's a good idea.
Please Indy: An episode of how to make a steadycam!
we built more or less the same deal but used single steel cable mounted a Mitchell 35. for super speedy dolly move(150'in the air) and never broke. steel cable isn't that expensive.
What is the camera that you use on the rig?
What happened to the rain wand?
yah! Ak47 is just what you need for shoot-out films! i hope you make one
yeah, but that alone costs more than the total cost of the build. the whole point is that this is a cheap way of doing it. If you can get synthetic rope, then by all means use that.
yess!!
"i'm serious. dOn't sue me" HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA
Whats the song in the Test fil trailer? Please tell me:-)
God, i hate it when people mark things as spam when its just someone asking a question.
lol "dont sue me" haha
This may be my nerd side talkin but at 0:48 it that a demon wings card?
sweet!
'
try use digitalcamera is a light weight and easily to use on cable wire
I would suggest metal cables for that rope breaking fiasco
Great tut, but for builds that could possibly damage an expensive camera, I would suggest that you take a bit more time on showing the actual build AND how to securely attach the cables. The actual build and set up was only 2.5 minutes long. You have 10 minutes. Use it!
where'd you get that camera
i miss eric!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :^(
I miss the old theme song.
no offence, but no one really cares! i know for a fact that these youtuber channel owners really dont care for these comments.
if we wanted to know what viewer you were, we would have counted...but we didnt soooo....there..
btw this build was very useful! i will use it definintely
I meant to say damn.
And again, damn. HOW DO YOU DO THESE THINGS!?
Sweet
ah, sorry then. my mistake :P I was just looking at prices online, and all I could fine were like 100FT for ridiculous amounts
I requested this rig a while ago but you didnt mention my name.
nice
whats the camera they use?
lol, this came out on my birthday
MOAR GOAR PLEEZ
might as well just use a steady cam rig for what they used it for.
"...IN SPACE."
crap I dropped my camara off the rig!!!
you guys will be hearing from my lawyer!!!..lol
Can you make a build where you can "FLY" or at least "WALK" on air. If you do I will put you on my 6 blogs.
Go fourteen year-olds!
I totally agree
Don't use a clothes line. Clothes lines aren't elastic enough to stand up to that kind of tension. Get some good nylon rope instead.
make a tut for a pov helmetcamera :)
PLEASE!
