In this video I mount a 2 axis gimbal on top of an RC car. This project was a lot of fun. The results are an improvement on the GoPro Mounted directly to the RC car but are not perfect. let me know if you would like to see this project continue. The video which sparked this project can be seen here: • RC Car GoPro Mount

Thanks for the tips Kyle! Do you have a video on a Steadicam review or any recommendations for a cheap (under $50) steadicam to get smooth panning shots without the shaking of walking? Thanks!
Great Video! Look forward to seeing more!
great project Kyle
Hi, your video was exactly what i needed, thanks :)
Quick question; Do you need to program the gimbal controller or is it just a matter of plugging in the battery in and it runs?
So just plug in the wire for gimbal then it well self balance any cam? No pc tweaking for it to adjust?
Im Planning to do the same thing but with a small fpv cam.
Turned out quite nice!
You could use sugru to attach the baseplate to the shell of the car. This would probably further help with vibration too.
Haywire!! nice choice in music
Very crafty!
HI Kyle, how did you connect the battery to the robot, looks like its a battery form the drill press.
Nice. Very impressive. Be very interested in (and if) you do a future upgrade. Keep up the great work on videos!
There is a wearable 3 axis gimbal out on the market that I want to try on my RC car. I think I will have to either make or purchase a cheese plate and have 1/4-20 holes drilled into it so I could mount the gimbal to it. I like your ideas of using zip ties!
HOLY AWESOME BATMAN!!!
Is there just something that you can buy ready to mount and use
So to make the gimbal work, all you need to do is hook it up to a power source?
Do you change setting or anything with the gimbal to working upside down? or just put it upside down?
now you talking there mate, looks good :)
Great video! Loved it
+Ryan Ringler thank you!
How did that gimbal work upside down!?
That's awsome
What is the scale for the rc car?
Nice video, Nice idea
+Edward Cameron thanks man
Very cool. Im looking to get one of these gimbals for my plane. Nice footage but i think you need a bigger rc car. Something like a E-revo that will go over grass like its nothing. :P
Try this on a slash 4x4 and make it have the cover on it too.
Buy Gitup Git 2, it has program that stabilize recording and you don´t need gimbal...
its awesone tude
Hi, I dont know what people say about your channel but its really great! I hope you could answer my question, if you can see the video live via monitor? while the RC is moving..
+Plongkie the way I did this you could use the app and watch the live stream form the GoPro however this would have a delay and would not be the best experience. You would be much better off getting a FPV set up for a drone and mounting it on your RC Car. With the popularity of drones you can pick up FPV sets up for quite cheap
Wow, I see. Thanks man!
you also can use 7.4 volts to power the gimible. Be Blessed
If you're going for a softer suspension setup, beware that the RC car will be very wallowy. It will feel like slush going into and out of corners. The gimbal's axis correction might help this, but the car will be no fun to drive and will be quite unpredictable. I think what you have right now is a good compromise of gimbal application with setting up the GoPro on a mount on top of the RC car like I did.
Sweet ideal I like it :-)
should get a bigger, better quality rc, slash 4x4 by traxxas, Hpi bullet, traxxas stampede 4x4, and more. but get something bigger and stiffen up the shocks so the chassis don't hit the ground as much as it does on the minis. if you have any questions ask away! other wise great idea and I might give it a try!
I agree
I like your experiment. My own project is to produce a suitable gimbol-cam on RC platform that can video me while inline skating on smooth parking lot surface for training video. I would like to add a "FollowMe" feature so I don't have to carry big controller.
Your production quality is quite good, You have a very clear speaking voice and good timing. Look forward to your upgraded project.
There are 12v camera batteries that are tiny. They may not last that long though
I need to make one of these preferably with a bigger car or truck to chase cars with a cam
Kyle I enjoyed the video. But, the idea was great you just executed in the wrong way. In order to have better outcome I think you may need to in vest in a vehicle like the Traxxas Slash or a vehicle from Hobby King in the 1/10 scale. Reason being for those they are larger vehicles and better control as well as better suspension. Also with larger vehicles they tend to be able to need larger power supplies, which you could very well use it's system to power the gimbal as well as more mountable locations.
+Donald “NOT PLAYING1970” Byrd Great input thanks for sharing. I think you are very right. After your comment I looked into the Traxxas Slash it looks like a good options. The power supplies on the Traxxas Slash is up to 11.1 volts which is the same the gimbal runs off.
If you were to put a BEC on the battery you'd be able to get all the voltage and current that's needed. Also, you could put an acrylic sheet on the top and use it as a mounting platform to mount your gimbal on top.
the gimbal works on a 2 cell without any isseus
What about protecting the lens for rocks etc.
+MultiTerpen nothing..... I will put a lens protector on next time.
Kyle Martin Tech "GoPro Tips and Tricks" Yea, do you know about any splash proof gopro gimbals that you can use with a gopro housing?
In my opinion this docent make too much sens, at the beginning i thought that you would be able to control the gimbal, because that could be useful.
You have a big yard why dont you create a dirt track for thet rc car :D
only suggestion a bigger chassis 10th or 8th scale
I totally agree! I think revisiting this video with a bigger RC car and a newer stronger gimbal could lead to some great results!
Hey man! I would suggest getting a 1/10 scale type of RC car, they're much stronger and heavier too (do get the brushless kind) and some of them have aluminum parts in them so you can mount things easily however they are quite more expensive. About the batteries you should try checking out hobby shops they do have 11v lipo bat that is a lot lighter (and a lot smaller) make more awesome vids man!!
+jhaybz29 thanks for the awesome feed back. I would like to take this project further. I have been looking at some 1/10 scale of cars and they look amazing. I will look at some hobby shops for batteries but if I was to get a 1/10 scale car it would run off 11v batteries so all my problems, well some of them at lest, would be solved.
what RC car is this?
it from WL a969 i think
My name Charles am From Africa Zambia I actually made an rc car frame I wanted to do what u did to yours but unfortunately in Zambia we don't have such kind of stuff please am kindly asking for your help to finish dream rc car
smart
do they still sell hero 3
They do on amazon
They do on amazon
just use the rider m on a go pro sticky mount
👍🏽
IDK why i'm here i don't have a go pro or a gimbal or an rc car
but this is cool shit
1/10th scale would have worked great.
what's the point of innovation if you don't first "fail"?
Thanks for video, but add more music plz.
Thanks for video, but don't add music plz.
(when you talk)
+Adrien Sallé Thanks for the input I was wondering what people would think of the music
Agreed. Music is fine for transitions and when not talking (e.g., 2:42) but distracting otherwise. Video was interesting though and I'm looking forward to more.
Kyle Martin Tech "GoPro Tips and Tricks"
your channel is NOT boring
7:35 is that a pubic hair? hahaha
You can tune a RC car so it rides smoother over grass.
Get yourself a hobby grade 1:10th scale RC 4X4,
Say... RTR Traxxas Slash 4x4 is simplest.
+xxgg I think this is true. I have been looking at some professional RC truck video platforms and think a hobby grade RC car would make a good base to build on.
I'd say more of an SCX10 rather than a Slash
+JIGGLYsHoW Why?
+JIGGLYsHoW Slash is a better basher truck. It's not like he is going to be pro racing it.
+Kyle Martin Tech "GoPro Tips and Tricks" Also if u do go with the slash get the 4x4 brushless way better than a brushed motor
I am one of those second type of people. ;)
maybe videos will come out better
8 scale works better.
put 5.8ghz camera on there and use FPV goggles
If you couldn't be bothered doing this you could just buy a fake housing off eBay and then super glue it on the top
try to get a bigger man it will be easier for the car
The way you talk just screams "I have a big ego" haha. I guess you just like hearing yourself talk
lol it broke @ 11:43
Haha!
nothing new cheers
yup, this video is boring :(
