    That reaction from Roman in the Mazda 3 was all the justification I needed. I definitely bought the right car.

      Don't get me wrong. I like the new civic, but that CVT killed it for me. Put a 6 speed auto and manual in it, and it would be an awesome car.

      +Mad Pistol Agree. I may consider the Civic if they offer 6 speed manual on the Touring trim. But even so, I think I still like the Mazda3 better. :)

    I picked up the Mazda 3 2017 base with the 2L MT, great cars. Fuel efficient, comfortable, sharp looking, can handle roads quite well. If you're more of a sporty guy it's a great car to take on some back roads, good sized cabin as I'm 6"6 and can drive stick in it.

  • @sass1420

    He talked about "liking the new civic best", yet he never looked like he was really enjoying it. The Mazda3, however, seemed to get the most visceral reaction out of him. He was smiling, and when he had the tires squeal, well, I thought his underwear might have gotten sticky. He did not say which engine was in the Mazda3, nor the mileage it gets. Perhaps because it would have showed how puny a gain Honda got with the CVT, while dampening the intangible I call fun, but is really more complex. It is the feel of the car itself, how well it feels to sit in, and corner in and drive, whether it is on the open road or in rush hour traffic, and even the most abysmal situations. If the feeling carries well through all that, and you still want more, that is what I call fun. He did not mention that the Mazda has a geared tranny, not a CVT, and every model, even the top one, has a manual available. I'll bet if he had a 2.5L with the manual transmission, he'd be saying "Honda what??" about the 1.5 turbo with its CVT. Mazda makes some kick ass manuals... best I have driven. I have been a Mazda fan for years, and I respect Honda, as they do try to inject some sportiness into their cars, However, and I have had this happen at 3 different dealers: 1 in NY, and 2 in Northern VA. You can look at the car, take it for a test drive, but when it comes time to talk price, you get this attitude like you smell funny, and they all say a variation on "we don't have to discount them to sell them, after all they are Hondas". The first time it happened was in the late 1980's the last two since I moved to VA in roughly 2002, and I forget the 2nd time. The second time I admit was a test to see if they did the same thing in VA, and the 3rd was to see if the other dealer did it too, as I had no intention of buying a Honda. Sorry I ran on a bit here

    Imo the Mazda 3 wins this. The Civic wins in a few areas like Roman mentioned, but the Skyactive engine is so much nicer than that CTV in the Honda. Good performance and great fuel economy with no CVT rubber banding.

      Just imagine if the 2016 civic had a six speed automatic, wouldn't that be nice! (It would beat the Mazda)

      +tipoomaster it has a metal belt in the CVT...not sure where you get the fact ...and the top civic model has 200hp at the crank

    • @tipoomaster
      @tipoomaster 8 лет назад +3

      luckyyu2004 Rubber banding doesn't mean a literal rubber band, people use that term to refer to that CVT gearless droning/stretching feeling. The new Civic tries to mimic gears though.

    • @nickv4073
      @nickv4073 8 лет назад

      +luckyyu2004 I have a 2015 Civic. "rubberbanding" is actually a good way to describe what the CVT feels like. The car seems to jump sometimes if you press too hard on the gas. It takes some getting used to. Overall I like my civic but only time will tell if CVT proves to be as reliable as the old tried and true automatic tranny.

    I'd pick the Civic. Mazda 3 looks gorgeous and has a real 6-speed automatic transmission, but for the overall reliability, I put more trust to the Honda brand than Mazda. The interior looks nicer on the Civic in my opinion, and Honda's CVTs are more responsive than any other CVTs I've ever experienced so It's no huge deal.

    I took my 2013 Ford Focus into the dealership and they installed new clutches. I think they have been redesigned. The car now runs beautifully and is very sporty. When it works it works good. Ford also increased the warranty on the Focus transmissions to 7 years. So drop your jerky car off at the dealership and they will put in the new clutches. Do it!

    • @capnvancouver
      @capnvancouver 8 лет назад +2

      PS- the new Civic looks like it was put together with junk parts from the wreckers. LOL Would look good in a Mad Max movie and the new car smell in the 2016 Civic is overpowering. Toxic. The CVT transmission belt will also loosen and get very clanky after 2 years.

    I just bought the Honda EX-L with 1.5 L Turbo and I was expecting a nice basic car focused on mediocre luxury and great gas mileage. After one week of owning, I am more than pleased with my purchase. I actually got 47 MPG at 65 MPH (24 miles). I found it difficult to repeat the gas mileage because the car is so fun to drive. The turbo is more than enough and runs sub 7 0-60. That's all I need for a $24,000 car. This video may be jaded but I don't need to drive the other brands. Honda hooked me line and sinker and gave me a fun car with excellent gas mileage!

    The reason its number one in the segment is Honda's reputation. However, I think Honda has been free riding on that reputation for a while, and not putting out the best product.

    So Honda brought their top of the line Civic but only brought the 3i instead of a 3s. That says a lot to me. I wonder if Roman would have still said the Civic was the sportiest if he had the 3s with the bigger engine and wheels.

    My test drive results from a 2016 Mazda 3, 2016 Focus SE with Sport Package (2.0L) priced at 22K MSRP and 2016 Civic EX-T with the 174HP engine 23K MSRP. Out the door the Focus will cost about $18,500 with 0% APR financing, the Civic will cost about $22,000 with about 3% financing for best borrowers:
    Note: I never even bothered driving the Mazda 3. It is too small of a car and too claustrophobic for a large male over 5'10", so that's all I have to say about the Mazda. I walked off the lot without trying it. Mazda's are made for midgets.
    Civic has more leg room, trunk space and head room.
    Civic's interior looks like something a college kid would drive, not necessarily someone over 30
    Civic accelerates better, feels more fun on straightaways
    Civic's steering is numb
    Ford's steering is numb but is more nimble and handles turns better, handling is enjoyable
    Civic offers a lot more at 23K MSRP but offers very little incentives, price is about 3K more when all is said and done, plus higher insurance and higher interest on your payments
    Civic had push button start, Ford did not at the SE trim
    Civic had a better and larger display with a lot of camera safety features
    Ford has a rear view camera but the display is tiny, but usable
    Which would I choose? Surprisingly, the Focus. At 0% APR and 3K less, it was a very decent offering. It is a less reliable car with worse resale, but I'm saving 3K up front, and it is certainly a capable vehicle. I would be more than happy with the Ford. I have nothing bad to say about the Honda other than it wasn't the better deal in my view. At 3K more, I'm getting to price points closer to a full size pickup, which makes me start thinking about other vehicles entirely.

    Mazda3 is a great car but honestly Mazda, Toyota and Honda build great cars because they are designed by japanese and they take pride in quality. I would never buy a car designed by Americans because I know how lazy quality Americans put in their own work. I know people that have Toyotas and Hondas for more than 20+ years with over 300,000 miles and they are still running great. They just do yearly maintenance.

    Roman, nice job, considering the time duration allowed and the lack of a camera man. I used to own a 1993 Honda Civic coupe when the coupe debuted, currently have a 2009 Mazda 6 6spd, and aspire to acquire a 3g model in the next few years. That is unless Honda can once again sway me in their direction. The wife hates driving the manual though, so I am really hoping that the Civic Si will offer the dual clutch auto. I know people hate on the CVT transmission a lot, but I've been driving a new model corolla for the past year with one in it, and it honestly hasn't been a bad thing at all. It makes the most of an incredibly underpowered powertrain by trying to keep the ratios in the most efficient mode for fuel economy as well as power when needed. As a commuter, it's a really smooth system. I'm curious to see how dependable they are after 100k miles, but in the mean time, I'm going to drive my car until the wheels fall off.

    review cars for a living, so a short drive is adequate. I had driven the 2014 Civic, 2015 Focus, 2015 Mazda3 i Sport with 2.0 engine and hands down 3 is the more engaging car to drive. The steering on the 3 is great, not too heavy or too light, the motor and tranny shifts when it should. As for the focus, ride and handle is good too but dual clutches has it quirk when driving on stop and go situations. The Civic rides and handle well too but the engine lack HP, plus the CVT eliminated any fun to drive factor.

    I used to drive a 1.8L 2009 Honda Civic 2 door, and as much as I wanted to hate it, that was a fun little car. Did they really lose that? Was my car special? I could always chirp the tires. It handled nice, flat and predictably, and the engine had lightning fast reaction just like the steering. Tranny needed to be manually downshifted to get into instant power though, which was funner anyway. Maybe Roman was just doing it wrong. It was great being able to push the car hard and not worry about wear and tear repairs as well. Never gave me an issue. Just asked for more till the day I sold it.

    This "review" is BS. He's basically trying to make an educated guess by driving the cars for a few minutes down a straight line. He's commenting on the cars' handling by doing one simple u-turn. Are you kidding?! Do a regular review that does the cars justice, or don't do one at all.

    • @TFLcar
      @TFLcar  9 лет назад +53

      Actually, Roman has spent a lot of time behind the wheel of all of these cars. His informed opinion is based on much more driving experience and time behind than a U turn. Honestly that's why he's in front of the camera and you are not.

    • @MultiJiggaWho
      @MultiJiggaWho 9 лет назад +19

      +The Fast Lane Car "...that's why he's in front of the camera and you are not."
      That's a very mature and professional response. Well done!
      Unlike Roman, I wouldn't be in front of the camera doing a half-assed job.
      Now, nowhere in this "review" does it state or appear, that he "has spent a lot of time behind the wheel of all of these cars". He mentiones many times that he is in a hurry and is rushing to put seatbelts on, etc.
      Please, find a place in the video, where it clearly shows how much time he has had with these cars.

    • @djkrazymm502
      @djkrazymm502 8 лет назад +5

      +The Fast Lane Car I agree with you! Roman's reviews are far more detailed and in depth, just because this particular review was short it does not justify any lack of on-point summary on the cars he tested, afterwards he is summarizing in short, but he has an extensive experience with these cars. By the way, we can all see that these are cars with a consistent history, and not some radical new models, so I believe these cars were reviewed spot on, and if we need to search and find high points on them it will be a bit too fanatic like.

    Interesting review, I have just purchased the Mazda 3 GT Tech based on the drive and horsepower and fuel economy. I took the Civic out but did not appreciate the transmission feel, in addition, I understand that there has been some major recalls on the product already. I am surer that Honda will get it right, just not in time for my purchase

    When it comes to cars for entry level 4 cylinders....you should look at 3 things....fuel economy , safety, and reliability. If you complain about ladi da hp torque and cvts....you are a sucker.. You were told you need a faster more expensive car by brain washing you to believe in the notion of social class and your worth being measured by the car you drive and have no idea if the concept of a depreciating asset. Keep your money in your wallet and not at the pump while you can.

      I'd rather pay to fix an auto trans than a cvt, which is comparably more costly to repair.
      Also, who's really caring about social norms and peer acceptance? You finance the best car you can possibly afford if that's what matters, not some entry level compact car lol.
      And btw, there's nothing wrong with being knowledgable about what you're buying, esp when it's the second most expensive purchase most people make throughout their entire lives.

    I’ll take the Ford Focus as an SEL or titanium trim level in a Sedan over hatchback. Don’t bash about the transmissions because they were updated for the 2015 and up being re programmed and updated software as for the DCT but for the select shift is a good one.

    So much complexity in these newer cars make future repair costs higher, IMO. CVT trans, more expensive to fix, turbo, ditto. All the electronic safety bells and whistles, more things to break. The last relatively simple car in this category is the 2016 Corolla L with 4 speed auto trans. The last Corolla with this trans option. All 2017's have CVT.

    The 3 is the best car, followed by the Focus. Notice the 3 and Corolla had plastic hubcaps, and were listed at topped out price, while the civic was displayed at base price, while the topped out turbo was tested. A little honesty would go a long way, and a CVT ruins any car, so any redeeming qualities of the new civic are canceled out. This test is biased, cheap, set up and fixed. FOR SHAME Roman, FOR SHAME. The journalistic integrity of this video is sorely missing.

      No the corolla is the best here's why
      It's been around little longer and doesn't go through as many updates and the resale value is insane and the 1.8l vvt I may be slow ass shit but it's perfect because it's low cost and dependable the thing is with Toyota only will update there vehicles if they need to. that's why they sell so well and not being updated every few months.

    Roman, my old lad, this is an absolutely cracking review, you really are the consummate professional. Plus, you made several really good points -
    1) When they make a car that's good on the Nürburgring, and that's all you have, a car that's good round the Nürburgring. How that benefits normal driving is anybody's guess.
    2) 99% of cars are bought by motorists, not enthusiasts, and motor manufacturers realize this. They produce cars to satisfy the majority.
    3) The above majority are interested in reliability and fuel economy. Performance, handling and roadholding aren't on their shopping list. Mazda produce very sporty cars, yet have a small market share.
    And a couple of other points -
    4) It's great to see Roman keeps himself so fit: talks and walks for 20 yards and he's gasping for breath. 0:18
    5) I still don't understand the obsession with manual gearboxes. CVT is the future.

      I never said I enjoyed your comment, kid. You should take your own advice to heart. Reread my comment and you'll see. Also, I notice you're now so desperate, you're going after a minor grammar error brought on by a tablet error to attempt to discredit me. Of course, I also appreciate your effort to take it easy on yourself. But remember, when you dumb it down for yourself and say it's for someone else, that's lying. That's not good. I did fix that minor mistake for you, though. I thought it would help you. You need all the help you can get.

    • @MrKeyboardCommando

    well it depends on what you're stance on "better" is. For example mercedez cars are "better" than Hondas because they are more luxurious, faster and have a brand name that makes you feel like it's a better car. However, that completely defeats your argument because if fixing a CVT (cvts are meant to save you money at the pump) is more expensive than fixing a regular tranny; then imagine how much more it costs to maintain a mercedez????
    With that being said, the average person will want to buy a car that is safe, reliable and fits their needs.
