I'll take either one. I have been a loyal Honda customer for 10 plus years, and I'll have no issues owning a Toyota. I still want Honda and Toyota to make one model car together. Honda can do the engine, Toyota can do the transmission, and they both can do the body style and accessories etc...

You think that the Civic and Corolla have equivalent levels of interior/driving ergonomics? Gonna disagree if so, and that's a huge point for long term ownership. Honda transmissions are vastly superior, both CVT and Manual. Haven't driven a tq converter auto of either since the 90's, and auto's were all dog doo doo back then anyway.

I bought my 2004 Corolla at 160k miles, and I'll admit, I've abused the hell out of that car. I've not always had the money needed to keep up with the repairs, and I finally start earning some decent money and it gave out on me. It just passed 250k miles and I'm needing to replace the engine due to rod knock. And the funny thing is that it's been so reliable the past five years I've owned it, even when I've not put in the time and effort into maintaining it, that I'm probably going to end up putting another engine in it. It's gotten me through several road trips and is surprisingly fun to drive. If I do end up doing the engine swap, I'm going to maintain it to see just how long I can keep it going, even if it means spending another 5+ years with this car!

@@jmfn6092 well, I did the engine swap. Got an engine from Japan with only 60k miles on it. The shop who did the swap did a good job replacing the engine, but a bad job making sure they didn't destroy any wiring when they did it. So now I have a perfectly running engine but electrical issues. The wiring to the speed sensor must've broken somehow, because I no longer have a working instrument cluster. Currently trying to find a shop that specializes in electrical where I live because all the swap shop did is replace the speed sensor and that didn't do anything to fix the issue.

But for some reason, my automatic transmission would only fit a speed sensor for a manual transmission. The first car I bought was a 2005 Honda Civic LX, which I bought new. Lasted me for over 16 years and put almost 207,000 miles on it. Issues I had was a bad alternator and starter. Replaced my brakes twice. No problem with the AC. I probably could’ve driven it for another year or so but the head gasket went bad and the cost to fix it wasn’t with it. Before I got my Honda I was planning on getting a Toyota Corolla. In January 2021, I ended up buying a 2021 Toyota C-HR as I got a better deal than 2021 Honda C-RV. Former Volvo technician here. I've owned 3 Civics in my life & my fiancé has owned 2 Corollas. The difference in maintenance cost, dealership experience, long term durability of parts, and especially interior/driving ergonomics all dramatically favor the Honda Civic regardless of generation. Oh, and ride quality is dramatically better in the Civic's as well. I mean Toyota was still using torsion beam rear on Corollas in 2018! A dealership shouldn't be charging $1000 to "clean the valve & head" on an MPFI (not DI) system during a 60k service either, but Toyota does that too. Based on my own experience as an owner, and as a professional auto technician I'd recommend Honda Civic any time given equivalent engine setups, years of production, & option levels.
This is not a commentary about the current Type R vs GR as those are highly niche cars. I am talking the primary sales trim levels.

A good oil undercoat will go a long way to protect from rust. I live in NH and use a product known as NHOU (New Hampshire Oil Undercoat). Like any other product, people will argue to no end which is best. I’ve used the clear formula on a new F-150 before it ever saw salt and treated every year. It gets sprayed inside the panels and frame as well as coating everything else underneath. Years later, the difference is clear when compared to similar models were were obviously never treated and exposed to winter salts. If it’s an older vehicle, it will still help, but not as much since any rust that has already started will continue to cause damage, but a thorough undercoat will slow it down considerably. The shop here is reputable and will do the inside/outside treatment for about $200 if you can’t do it yourself, but the cost compared with repairing the frame or body is much more. Once a year is typically all you need, usually the fall is a good time for that.

The Civic feels sportier when you hear the engine rev and the suspension is dialed a little tighter to take those corners aggressively or switch lanes quickly, harder lines but a lot of organizing storage upfront. Had to buy cushions and neck rests for my long commute. Great for backseat passengers with the 3rd seat not having that middle bump.

These type of cars are not designed to be performance cars so I don't see why they won't go ahead and put plenty of sound deadening in them. It's the only reason we won't take it on a road trip is because of the road noise. We take my F150 instead.

I owned a 2005 Honda Civic LX for 12 years and it was a rock. Awesome on fuel, started in -30 C weather, and very easy for working on/learning to work on. The catalytic converter punctured around 330K and that's when it started to get pricey for repairs. If well maintained, those engines will keep going. I'd buy another in a heartbeat. It's too bad they were never offered in a hatchback form for the 2001-2005 years.

After going through 2 Nissans, which everything broke down in BOTH of them at 180,00 miles (I mean transmission, engine, brakes, gears, wouldn't shift in reverse, everything) I vowed never to buy a Nissan again (to be fair I didn't maintain them). Bought a 2006 Civic new. Drove it from Riverside to LA horrendous traffic jams every day for 8 years in 90 and 100 degree summer days to work. Then Riverside to Orange County another 4 years. Never a issue. If you live in LA you know what that proves. I still have this car and drive it on a regular basis. Only tires brakes and 100K valve adjustment and trans and engine oil changes as recommended.
Best damn car I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned a lot of cars. Not the fastest or most flashy but for transportation and reliability this thing is way over the top. It’s NEVER let me down. A/C still blows ice cold air. 30 mpg all the time. Everything still works. Runs like it’s new. No rattles no shakes.
    Will NEVER sell this ride.
    It’s my baby.
