With this logic the Iphones with 60hz screen should cost 200$. But they are on the same price as Xperia and nobody complain about the display.

But that's because iPhones didn't have a high rez screen to begin with so people who use it are used to that. Xperia users are used to 4k screens and alpha camera vibes from the Xperia lineup. So yes we will complain about it cos it's a downgrade to what we are used to and expect the price to go down as well since it has been downgraded from our perspective. I have an Xperia 1 IV and was thinking on buying the 1 VI but have changed my mind. Will go in for the Vivo x100 pro rather. I have a pixel 8 pro as well and not impressed with its hardware and performance. iPhone is too restrictive for me considering what I use my phone for so iPhone is a No for me as well. Was considering Samsung but the cost of repairs is too high

I guess you can't please everyone. People whined and moaned about all previous Xperia 1 phones. Sony changes tack, people still moan. The price is high but it still has niche/enthusiast features that most phones do not have. By the way, the screen is 1080+ and close to the iP15PM's pixel density. Fun fact, the previous 4K screen rendered 1080p mist of the time! Here in the UK, you also get the XM5 headphones thrown in for free. That is worth £300....the other option is wait until the price drops and pick one up on eBay....

    • @UpsideLens

I guess for me, as a photographer my biggest gripe was more on the letdown when it comes to the hardware in terms of sensors, just recycling last year's module is not good enough at a flagship price point. Then the software is a huge downgrade compared to the V. The price Sony is asking for can get you some very serious bit of kit from other brands and still have quite a bit of change leftover !

    • @nateflorea9009
      @nateflorea9009 7 месяцев назад +7

No other flagship has this low resolution at the similar screen size, afaik. 1440x3200 20:9 would have been the obvious downgrade if "4k" 1644x3840 643 ppi and 21:9 is too much. This being a slight downgrade from 3840x2160 807 ppi 18:9 Xperia XZ Premium (downgrade due to 21:9 aspect from 18:9 which cut some pixels on the side, and larger screen which means lower ppi). For 9 years they had 4k screen which is arguably too much even for the best eyes. After that they went directly to 1080p. 1440p or ~500 ppi would have been the sweet spot and they skipped it. I can't comprehend how this happened. It's like Sony competitors voted for the changes 😅

@@UpsideLens I take your point and phones are a personal thing so it depends on what one is trying to get out of it. I am currently using the Xiaomi 14 Ultra and I can't wait to get rid, the software simply ruins everything for me. It is the software that is the main thing that draws me to a phone and yes, to a lesser extent the camera. Realistically, and by the process of elimination, the phones that pique my interest are the Pixel and the Xperia series, I'm more of a stock android guy. Currently recovering from an accident but as soon as I'm up and about, the Xiaomi is going on eBay. Already pre-ordered the Xperia 1 vi. I have to admit that without the XM5s thrown in, I probably would have swerved it at £1,299. That price is simply too goddamn high.

The Xperia 1 VI feels like an iPhone or a Samsung . It has lost its Xperia vibes and looks and feels like an iPhone or Samsung. This move will let it loose most of its loyal customers since the inception of its mark lineups. The aspect ratio of the previous made much more sense to us than this new aspect ratio. The real users of Xperia lineups never complained about the seperate apps for videos and camera. Those who never used it were the ones complaining. Now they have succeeded in chasing away most of their loyal fan base with this release. Which android company uses a 1080p screen for their high-end phones in 2024. Really Sony

While every phone manufacturer has its issues, Sony stands out for meeting our expectations of a phone. It offers a harmonious balance of features. We can expand the storage with a Micro SD card, enjoy high-quality audio through the headphone jack with an excellent DAC, benefit from front-facing stereo speakers, experience improved battery life, and appreciate its classic design, among other advantages. Consider the additional cost of opting for a 1TB version instead of a 128GB version from another phone manufacturer. I want to ensure I receive the best value for my money tbh.🙂

      @UpsideLens  7 месяцев назад +3

It all depends on your needs and wallet, if you're already used to cameras, which you seem to be, you'll have a much better time using the V with it's DSLR like interface similar to the alpha cameras, on the VI you're using a cluttered viewfinder just like any other android or iPhone camera app. There is also the price difference, a V can be found nearly new / pristine on eBay for £500 !!!! The new VI is nearly 3 times as much. Again really depends on your needs. If you have the money and don't care much about the camera aspect then VI would be a good proposition but then so would a lot of other brands which incidentally have much higher camera hardware.

I get your concern, 100%. but i also think its maybe a bit too early to make such judgements. I heard or read that they will add the pro apps again with next OS update. Why they will wait for that for those apps to be added i dont know? maybe optimalisation or so. It would be a waste in itself to just delete the apps for further use, all that work to make such great apps to not use them anymore while most of their core value customers use them so i think its a bit too early to say they will leave that out. it is also 100% good to say that they do go more mainstream that is true. and you can indeed never please everyone. in my personal experience the pro apps can still be improved but i must also say the pro apps are the best in the phone camera department it would be nice for them to focus a bit more on the point and shoot and general consumer camera software. but even i while using the standard camera app on the xperia 5ii for like 98% was shocked seeing this new weird app. means it takes a lot of adjustments for me as a pretty general photography user. I do hope the user experience is getting better with it though, i guess it takes time and some adjustments. it is also what you say a daring move of sony to go so different all of a sudden. but lets see. i wouldnt buy this phone now myself too. 1400 euro for a phone is in my experience way too much money anyway for any phone hahahaa but that said im a cheapskat also. but knowing sony and its quality im sure its a good phone. but time will also tell us. the reviews that are released now deffinitrly not tell the whole story etc.

Already purchased the xperia 1 VI (its on a DHL plane from Hong Kong as I type) - I feel it is an upgrade from the 1 V - the screen issue is a non-event for me; I have so many different phones with all different resolutions, from 4K to the 1080P screen on my Nothing Phone 2 (which I set to 480dp in developer options) - there is no real-world usability difference. I get the conversation about the pro-mode, that's going to be a personal issue for every user, no comment or video chat is ever going to sway an opinion on that.

    • @UpsideLens
      @UpsideLens  7 месяцев назад +3

Like I said in the video that is my opinion only as a photographer. It is not a bad device at all and really depends on what one wants to use it for but again for me the photography aspect has been left out by recycling the same camera sensors as last year, and downgrading the software which is the most important in a photographers workflow, and at that flagship price there is a lot of competition with much better hardware out there hence why it isn't for me. Enjoy 👍

The Photo Pro mode is the same as before except for the Automatic and the stupid Basic Mode.So as a standard basic app it now looks very successful to me and the Pro mode has remained???You can definitely start the app directly in Pro Mode again. Before, everyone complained about the three apps and the really bad basic mode 🤣Everyone wants longer battery life... Now Sony gives us 2 full days, better than Samsung and Apple and everyone is crying because of the resolution🤣Now Sony is supposed to install larger sensors, which requires a huge camera module, Xiaomi and Co say hello..... And then everyone will complain again 🤣So the only thing that bothers me is that the sensor of the telephoto and 16 mm is not one of the latest generation.Otherwise resolution FHD and two days runtime, significantly brighter..... Great!A little wider so my old eyes can read better...... Great!48 MP option...... Great! 2XZoom better...... Great! Macromodus..... Better autofocus... Great!Better speakers... Great! I think that's a lot. What did Samsung present? A display that is less reflective and is now flat.....Wow!😅And Apple, Xiaomi and Co? Everyone did less better........ These high-end devices are all too expensive.A Pixel 6 for €200 from eBay won't really perform any worse in automatic mode, we all know that? The same applies to a Pixel 8.9, iPhone 15,16, S24 Ultra etc etc...With Sony you get the most for your money I have the B&W PX8 and the blades are so great with APTX adaptive I use the WF1000 xm5 for sports and travel...... Great with LDAC and Qobuz....... I would only like one device and unfortunately that isn't available......Pro i 2😅This was my favorite device so far because it set new standards for taking photos (with a cell phone)

Great video. Thanks for sharing the honest truth. I totally agree with you. I am very disappointed with SONY. I am done with Xperia. Been using Alphas and Xperia 1 II, III and IV. Am planning to change to VI but very disappointed with this new release. Even though it has a 85 to 170mm zoom, it is still using the tiny tiny 1/3.5" sensor from the 1 series 5 years ago. While all other phone makers are using the largers 1/2" or 1/2.5" new LYT 800/900 sensors with 50MP, SONY is still 12MP and a tiny 5 years old sensor. The telephone Zoom again is going to be soft, blur and unusable especially indoors or in low light. Note that all the RUclips paid reviewers video shows pictures of 85 to 170mm in bright daylight, but onces light is low or indoors, the zoom pictures are unusable. Look carefully and you will all the paid reviewrs' 85 - 170 zoom pcitures are all blurred or with plenty of post-Lightroom sharpening. I am glad Upside lens showed actual zoom pictures here. WAKE UP SONY. This is a downgrade from the 1 V. It is very clear the Xperia is not progressing to compete with others and instead get worst (poorer display, same sensors).
Also I want to say, when I first posted and feedback the above, I was attacked by plenty of SONY bots, from "certain" geographies. I was even acused of being paid by others phone makers to attack SONY. Paid by who? Samsung, Oppo, Google, Apple? Or by all? (How I wish, I would be rich by now). It is just puzzling how SONY who makes great zoom sensors for other phones but still uses the tiny 1/3.5" sensor from 5 years ago (used in the Huawei Mate30).

I am personally happy with the new improvements to the Sony phone. It finally has the best headphones and the best sound, and it now has the best camera, and I have no problem with the screen resolution, and I am happy that the company did not put a hole in the screen and did not eliminate the SIM port or the audio jack port.
But it is sad because the phone again neglected slow-motion photography, and also did not reduce the price of the device, even though it reduced the screen resolution, which was a justification for increasing the price.

I like watching reviews or in this case not a review but a statement because it gives another viewpoint . I don’t agree with it but it’s just as important as the gushing reviews we usually get . For the record I WILL buy the 1 vi because of the different form factor , something I said I would never do when it was announced . So , I have changed my mind and taken the plunge but until I try the phone I can’t offer a valid reason not to like it ( or to like it) … the proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say…
I want to add an update … after trying the Sony 1 vi I can categorically say that I am returning it . In my opinion Sony have tried to appeal to everyone but have taken away the very heart of the 1v which is to the detriment of the phone .. I can just about live with the half way house form factor but the new camera app in my opinion is dire . At least when we had the three apps everything was easy to negotiate.. unfortunately the one app now feels cluttered and unprofessional , in fact downright messy ! Sony may gain a few extra interested people but I’m sorry , I will go back to the 1v or as i may bypass the Xperia all together . One point I would like to make .. why did they do away with the haptics when watching movies or sports on the 1 vi ???? It was a great feature . Also , why oh why doesn’t the Home Screen auto rotate .. I questioned Sony about this but they said “ press the auto rotate button” er , duh ! Wow Sony , dint you think I tried that .. the Home Screen doesn’t rotate folks .

I got to try it for 5 hours non stop a couple of days ago, and unsurprisingly was very underwhelmed. The 2 main let downs are the Telephoto lens which manages to be slightly worse than the V (that includes the macro ability too) and the terrible UI which is very backwards and ill thought out but was also very glitchy in the few hours I got to test it. If it was my money I'd either go for the V or another brand. I will have a video out at some point as I still need to go through hundreds of raw files i shot ftom the day 👍

In Photo Pro, manual focusing can be easily done with one hand, which you hold your smartphone with. For some reason, in the ugly new app, manual focus is on the screen and not in the function menu. Previously, you could hold the phone firmly with your left hand, and move the sharpness slider with your right hand and press the shutter button. This reduced the shaking of the phone. Now you have to move your finger across the screen with your left hand, and set the settings with your right hand and press the shutter button. Why is there this huge white shutter circle in Pro mode if it takes up the workspace? Why was the histogram removed to the farthest corner? Why were the menu buttons removed from the left side of the screen? There is now an empty black stripe there. Why do I need inverted Pro, Bokeh and other inscriptions in Pro mode? Why do I need zoom on the right side of the screen if it was much more convenient on the left side of the screen?

The features I really like about Xperia Phones, at least the recent models, from Xperia 1 up to the 1V, are:
-the tall skinny design which made it feel so elegant in hand.
-The camera interface, it surely made it feel like operating a camera with a phone, rather than a phone with a camera. And it goes for all 3 apps; photo pro, cinema pro and video pro. Those interefaces were a delight to handle.
    And
    - The 21:9 aspect ratio. I enjoy wathcing a movie in this format. Sony is the only 1, that I'm aware of, who offers all of the 3 features above.
Not a big fa of the all in 1 camera app, but at the same time, if it was a move to apply to a wider market, good luck and hope to have Xperia phones for many years to come.

The third option would have been great...Why bother to buy a phone with subpar auto mode and pro mode like everyone else (No hate on sony i'm xperia 5 iii user)...Could've gotten 14 ultra with best auto mode, better camera and same pro mode as new Xperia....It's just too hard to sallow no 21:9 display not even 1440p display, no pro camera apps which i almost every-time use...They just screwed their core fans, yet can't able to make a good phone for average users....It's not good for us nor the average consumers, no unique features for example for Samsung it's spen, xiaomi it's 1inch sensor with very high end secondary leans, pixel for best point and shoot camera, what xperia has now to be unique among those phones ? Spen ? 1 inch senor ? high resolution uw,tele leans ? best point and shot camera ? NO, Best thing about the xperia was it's 21:9 display, pro camera apps, 4k display (although it's overkill but still)..
only thing they have now it's just expandable storage and 3.5mm jack , but almost 80% of people don't care about them, they just forgotten this thing existed....
asus zenphone seires died because of this kind of mistake screwed their core fans, I don't want sony to be in the same position...
Please brink back what used to be good and working and made it better from there....Like 1440p 21:9 ltpo panel, two camera app one just phone auto mode, and second one like perivous three pro apps bundled into one app, do not change anything, we do not want to learn thing over from scratch....If they continue to this kind of BS then 1 V would be my last Sony phone, I won't gen another sony phone...I'm done

Even single release seems like its been a downgrade, with this one being the most substantial. If they want to make a phone for the typical person, isn't that what the 10-series was supposed to be? Why step-down the 1s and the 5s and alienate your core fanbase? If you try to please everyone, you'll end up pleasing no one. Sony's really missing the mark - pun intended.

I found the best description to be like they often described high end flagships with focus on camera as having 1 cohesive camera with 3 lenses while on the Xperia it feels like you got 3 cameras, because they differ so much from each other in terms of detail, processing, color reproduction, where it simply starts feeling like you don't have 1 coherent unit. Personally, I don't mind those changes. It's hard to tell the difference in resolution in real life. I didn't like the Pro app interface anyway. Aspect ratio was only good for cinematic movies, with many apps not optimized for it. AI can be turned off, so it's not a problem. Most likely usable in certain conditions. For me, these phones are not only about cameras. Sony is the only manufacturer that didn't drop 3.5mm audio jack or microSD expansion. Not only that, they are rocking a solid 24bit/192kHz DAC. Gaming overlay is one of the best, allowing to bypass battery when plugged in to the charger. In my opinion, the Xperia range has been extremely underrated because of being such a niche. If you intend on using it long term I highly suggest tweaking it with a bit of cardboard or black tape to cover the gap on the back if you arranged the mount so it is centered with all the lenses. If you have mounted it so there is no gap then you'll get massive vignetting from the other 2 lenses. Enjoy 😀

I really agree with you on everything, and I feel betrayed, I was an Xperia customer since the Mark II, I didn't want a pixel because its processing is horrible, its point-and-shoot essence didn't express what I wanted to capture, I thought this Mark VI would be more but they decided that it was very pro for people who, in itself, They didn't flip to Xperia, they won't have any more money from my Sony.

SD GEN 1 was notorious for getting pretty hot but SD GEN 2 definitely fixed that in the Xperia 1 V. Now in it's 3rd revision I can vouch for a very snappy, efficient and cool usage, at least in another device, I'm sure the VI will be similar too in that regards 👍

I had it pre-ordered through O2....but then cancelled it after thinking more on it. I have a Sony A6700 camera with 3 lenses covering most ranges. I wanted the 1 MK VI to literally be a camera system similar but with mobile limitations (sensor size) to an alpha camera with a phone tacked on. But the 1 VI is just too much of the same with the differences they have made making little sense. In the end I can keep rocking my iPhone 15 Pro Max, iMac 2023 and Sony A6700 to pretty much cover all my photography and post edit needs. The iPhone really annoys me with its over processed images, but then I literally use it when my camera is not with me....which is what a mobile camera phone is for I guess.
I really really wanted the 1 VI to be so advanced in camera hardware and remain focused on Pro Mode....but as you pointed out - it's pretty much just an extra zoom, lesser screen and the same damn price. The screen downgrade, which allows better battery life (can't complain) and LTPO with a "50%" increase in brightness (though tech testers put it more like 30%), is criminal! iPhone, Pixel and Samsung are hitting the 2000nits mark with HDR and better resolutions and still LTPO - so how can Sony justify the same (close to iPhone/Samsung) price?!
Maybe there is hope for the Xperia rebranding...but if they are going to kill the niche appeal - maybe they should just exit the market and those looking for serious photography should turn to dedicated cameras.

Software has been a bane to all Sony products, as they are not really sure what direction it should be in.
But I do believe though, given some time, the new camera app will be the better solution compared to what we have previously, just need more Xperia touches here and there.
The zoom lens however, needs to be significantly fine tuned to be sharper, not only sharpen post-process.
I never do find the 1080p screen such a downgrade as Z and XZ (not premium) has always been 1080p but the price not dropping really hurts.

In EU we need 25fps from a Sony phone!
Did SONY actually removed 25fps - Pal mode ???
All previous version had 25fps for EU Countries (with 230V 50Hz)
No feature is more important than having usable framerates especially for SONY camera users (your No.1 customers)
Even more when this will not be released in America (if i understood correct)
    WHY ?
Because without it we get extreme flickering at most artificial light conditions.
To avoid this we will have to adjust the shutter speed at every shooting condition (requires knowledge), while sacrificing motion blur control and ease of use!
We were expecting an upgrade with 50fps and 100fps also in EU.
We don't mind the screen changes with it's pros and cons that much...
85-170 lens gives more reach but image is still soft, Macro mode better - Night mode bit better.... Good additions BUT...........
We were waiting for this SONY mobile for months and now you give us no choice than to buy an the iphone with over sharpened footage, no sd card slot, no 3.5 mm audio jack.

But I ordered the one Mark 6.I find the aspect ratio better for reading and I don't really watch films on my phone.I don't know what to think of automatic mode either, I loved the old camera app The photos look more mainstream now.I'll only shoot in manual mode anyway and I hope that the changes there aren't that bad.I agree with you completely about the additional app, but I think that's exactly what Sony didn't want. I absolutely stand by your final comment.....it's all about mobile photography and the techniques and tools to get the best out of you and the device!
I really like Sony phones , the UI, features along with build quality.
Price has remained the same now for the past few years but I never feel the next gen is truly next gen but just a final of what the previous phone should have been.
The Xperia 1 V did get an update to improve the telephoto which it did but not a night and day difference.
It's also more tuned to close range zoom instead of true distance.
I'm not hugely fussed about macro but I think Sony missed the mark and should have used the new examor T sensor on all the lenes.
The one other thing I wish Sony did was improve the current set up more , software can make a difference to quite a few things regarding image quality but the life span to improve is a year before it becomes security and OS updates
We don't see any further substantial improvements or features added to the camera/ video set up
My wife's OPPO find X3 pro got camera and software improvements over the past few years and it's still a formidable set up.
I too love manual control, even if it's really just iso and shutter with these phones the rest can be edited really easily.
Video though is outstanding on this phone hands down
Like many things the vi will get optimized for Android 15 but I agree I didn't have a problem with separate modes for photo /video/cinema as pointed out it kept all those adjustments to those functions.
Still if the price drops substantially on black Friday I'll think about it or just wait for the rumoured Xperia pro C later in the year.
    Keep up the good work

Not quite expert RAW. Samsung's expert RAW is in some ways worse than regular RAWS since they add extra processing. what about the rumours of a so-called "Sony Pro-C" (alleged successor to the Pro-I?)
I found a reddit sub with the rumour of this Pro phone with the (hopefully) the LYT-900 sensor.
Anyway, those are rumours.. I'm gonna stick with my 1V as well for the same reasons you listed. But actually thought the new telelens would be sharper. My state of GAS pulls my fingers, but I keep coming back to the notion that I'll most likely be disappointed considering the only "new" thing is the extended zoom. I mean, zoom is nice but for those ranges no phone has yet to deliver usable results in terms of photography - of course gimmicks with moon-shots and other are funny, but honestly terrible pictures.. for zoom, you need a real camera for usuable results.

The "PRO" part of the photo camera is sadly already there and all changed, the old Alpha like UI is now a thing of the past sadly.

I think the sony xperia 1vi is a nice phone. Not sure about the display. I have currently the xperia 1v - the display is excellent.

Definitely agree with the V ! One of the best phones I've had in years, was a bit sad to let go of it but it was time for me to move on 👍 enjoy it and let's hope they don't port the new camera app to the V 😅

funny i saw like 10 different test of this phone compared to the last one sony phone and the only downgrade is the screen wich was big overkill to begin with..lmao..so i dont get you to be honest..everything else in that phone is a huge upgrades :)

I guess you didn't see the part about all the camera sensors being the same as last year... I guess you didn't see the part about the software being dumbed down to accommodate noobs and leaving the "pro" not so "pro" anymore, I guess you also skipped the part about the macro mode being pretty bad... I mean this video is from a mobile phone photographer point of view, not for everyday user point of view if that makes sense

@@UpsideLens i saw everything and the new model is still a upgrade no matter how hard you cry about it..the phone photographer you talk about should stop complaining to.so i guess you did not get my comment..and all the "pro" stuff is still there so guess you missed that too :)

Build and improve the foundation that you already have..
Bingo! That's all they do.. they listen to Mkhd. Which was a bad move.
Like you said, they should have just improved on what they already had.

Maybe next year Sony will finally replace the ultrawide and telephoto lens that have been recycled for three generations (I IV- IVI). The 1 VI really falls between two stools. Sony wants to appeal to mainstream customers, but it can’t hold a candle to Apple or Samsung in terms of software support. New features are never backported to older Xperias ( the 10 IV can run creative look yet the 1IV did not get it with the Android 14 update. And the 1IV retailed for £1299 when it launched😂😂 ). For those who don’t care about longer software support/ new features and buy an Xperia for its pro camera features, the new simplified camera UI will fail to impress.
Sony can update the three pro apps and put them on the Play Store. But Sony probably won’t listen to its customers.

well.. I think it's too soon to tell the VI not remarkable.. maybe it will have major update rather than V.. hope Sony will do major update too for V..

For the sake of all the people who enjoy photography as a hobby I hope they do not update the V ! That's the worst scenario !

well I mean the update software is for only the basic mode and the periscope performance.. the rest camera app (photo, video, cinema pro) must updated too but not into one app like on VI.. seriously, Sony can do better to make the three apps become powerful

Personally what i like about the new xperia 1 vi, i feel it was designed for me xD
I mean the camera is still pro that all i care XD
4k is not noticable in phones, 1080p QHD won't really be different ethier is what the spec put on the display that make it looks soo good, someone compare both, and said that tge screen in 4k mode didn't looks so different with the new xperia 1 vi, i think sony just took something that really wasn't neassarary, even i took pictures and see it on my 4k TV instead to get the full details 😅

Like I said in the video, it isn't a bad phone by any means but my gripes are that for the ultra flagship price they charge for it, keeping the same sensors all around as the 1V as well as aggressively downgrading the resolution and a laughable macro mode really is a big slap in the face ! Had they priced it accordingly, let's say around the £900/£1000 mark then be it but seeing that the competition offers much better hardware at a lower price can't excuse Sony's practice this year.
