I think Sony should adopt the software approach when outputting photos using auto mode to attract point and shoot audiences, and in manual mode, they should stay with their current approach. That way they can win both types of audiences.

wrong this is part of the SCAM...Everytime something works and gives the people control of their own devices, here comes someone peddling garbage to remove it and create more ways to give the people less personal control. In other words, they took the physical headphone jack to market more wireless crap to have next to your brain. Wired headphones and making the physical camera means you have MANUAL control and you will not need to buy the same phone over and over. That is exactly how they bullied the camera market to try and make people stop using film and DSLR cameras, by LYING and saying software makes photography better.

Thanks for the important point you make in the video. At this day and age of a ton of self proclaimed reviewers, many of whom approach the review with their own preferences and yardsticks and quite a few with real knowledge on the topic. They tend to pass judgement. As they say creating a product is difficult, criticism is easy. Yes, Sony surely has faults but so do others. They also have their strengths. Highlighting one and hiding the other is the judgement I refer to. Thank you for making this important point. Thumbs up.

Xperia 1V owner here. I tested out the bokeh mode recently, bc I have never used it until now. The thing is, in specific lighting conditions the Portrait mode does make photos with blown out backgrounds. But this is only in Portraith mode and not in every situation. Great video as always. I watched the MKBHD review and completely agree. I was expecting the Xiaomi 13 Ultra and Sony to come higher up, but not at the bottom. MKBHD seems to target the average consumer audience who are really only interested in photos that are ready for social media, if you like that style. I'll be honest and say that most of my photos are point and shoot, but are mostly of my kids, who don't stay still long enough to get a decent photo most of the time. I had considered something like a Pixel for point and shoot but to me the photos look too artificial. I've always liked photography. I just don't have the time for it. I actually ended up getting a Xiaomi 13 Pro after watching your videos. I wanted to to have something with a bit more control and a fast shutter (for kid photos), so that if I do get the time, I can try and take something more professional looking. I've only had a few occasions, but even after 6 months, I am still impressed with this phone/camera.

It just shows that the majority of people who voted are probably just your average consumer that don't have a clue about proper photography. If people like that sort of HDR, oversaturated, over sharpened look, that's good for them, but the target audience for Sony and to an extent Xiaomi is not your average consumer. It is aimed at people who are into professional photography, that will put some time and effort in to get the desired look. This is probably why Sony phones have never really sold extremely well, as they have never aimed for the social media ready crowd. If they did that, their point and shoot photos would probably be similar to all the others. Having a reviewer review a product the way it wasn't designed to be used isn't really doing the product justice.

If he didn't not like features like the near 4k display and the large screen he should have just used the Xperia 5V. He also never mentioned the Xperia 10 series. In my experience, the only time I take good pictures is when I have a Sony phone, with my current device being a Samsung Galaxy the photos are generally good if you know nothing about photography but are consistently average at best even when using Pro photo mode. • @ThroughJermainesLens
      @ThroughJermainesLens  7 месяцев назад +1

the point and shot isn't that horrible, see the 2 shots that were point and shoot. But the most important part is simply put that if you don't utilize the phone properly and inform people properly what this phone is meant to be about, then better just not add it, you aren't showing what it can do, and that is a big part of being a reviewer.
He could for instance show: this is how it performs automatic, but it isn't meant for that, go in to pro mode and then this is what it can do. He does this often with sony, and many of the more normal reviewers do that too.
If you are there to inform about the photography, do it properly, and highlight the cabapility well.
You cannot tell a story, have a intro of the story and the characther and then end the story without having the plot inside of it, that is basically what has been happening with those kinds of reviews.

You make a very valid point and as a fellow consumer I understand your thoughts. But I disagree with it.
My take is when you're reviewing a product and trying to compare it with others, you need not compare them only on the strengths of some of those products while ignoring others. Eg Apple, Samsung, Google etc. make great phones which take popular point & shoot photos. However that's their strength and philosophy and it caters to a major set of consumers. Sony offers a different kind of strength which none of these companies are even capable of offering in the near term. So that should be treated as a Sony advantage and a lack in others. That's the point this video is trying to make. And I agree with that. A consumer has a right to choose. Whether they want to use p&s or manual photography and if they find p&s of one brand better over another, it's their prerogative and they vote with their wallet. Speaking of gambles, my Xperia 5 II (bless its SoftBank soul) got a grand total of... one update. Yep, from Android 10 to 11. That's it. For a phone I dropped a small fortune on, that's just criminal. So yeah, big Sony fan here, but until they get their basics together - especially that "point and shoot" mode - I'm sadly waving goodbye.

well it depends, if you use basic yeah can be a hit and mis, but use auto and the pictures will be fine.
now updates in terms of software I agree, they should support their phones longer.

Exactly! I bought the phone. I love the phone most of the time. The form factor is awesome. I absolutely love using it. Software updates are a few months behind my Pixel, which is way ahead of Samsung, at least in terms of my last Samsung phone, which is many, many years ago. The cameras and the camera apps are great. BUT I can't count on the auto camera. It is like it is always on manual mode. Even in auto, in anything other than great light, I needed to make adjustments. And in low light, forget it. And that is the deal breaker. I shoot a lot of travel photos and I really care about the quality of the output. But I also bought the Pixel 8 Pro because I have been fully into Pixels since the beginning. And Pixel doesn't give me that sweet Sony control. But it absolutely delivers a very good photo every time. Sony fails far too often. It is frustrating. The Sony phone is just so good. But it doesn't work as a pocket camera, which it is first and foremost. I'm sad to get rid of it, but the Xperia, even if it is not meant for point and shoot, I'm sorry to say, we are pointing and shooting most of the times. This needs to be the priority, and all the enthusiast stuff should be right there when I want it.
Make a point and shoot, sell phones.

    mr. Jermaine!
Don't think of it as of an accusion, but.
How many other high-end phones have you tried along with the Xperia?
Did you know that other smartphones like Vivo, Samsung, Oppo, Xiaomi also offer manual shooting modes?
Did you know that, except for Oppo, they also offer manual shutter speed, ISO, white balance settings in JPG as well as in video?
What most youtubers defending Sony fail to understand is that beauty and quality are two things.
People captured beautiful images of nice things at all times, including 20 years ago with first digital cameras that had 2-4 megapixels total.
You've shown a lot of well composed images in this video.
But should you have tried comparing Sony directly to Oppo, Vivo or Xiaomi, you'd see what the problem is.
Manual mode gives you better control of exposure; white balance lets you control color. But Sony fails to deliver in dynamic range and detail department.
No manual mode can turn off that terrible noise reduction, no manual mode can fix blurry tele lens.
After trying tele lenses on Vivo X100 Pro (best in the market currently), Oppo Find X7 Ultra, well even the iPhone 15 Pro Max - each of these devices shows outstanding amounts of detail in RAWs as well as in JPGs, whereas Xperia 1V just is TOO soft, its detail rendering is absolutely unacceptable for the price tier Sony puts the device in.
I loved Sony, but they HAVE to keep up with the market.
And lastly. Even if Sony's detail level was on par with the competition. The Image Quality is still on a smartphone level. ANY half decent APS-C camera (and I own a few) is head and shoulders above any smartphone including best cameraphones I own (and I most all of them - xiaomi, vivo, oppo, iphone, sony). It's just pointless to tinker around with images from a smartphones when I can bring a camera and get a much more decent material.
True, I don't always bring my camera. But it makes no sense for a phone to have weak auto mode. I even shoot in full auto on my Fujifilm camera. Why can't a sony phone do that?
Sony just brings less to the table, while asks more.
All smartphones on the market offer manual controls in photo, all of them. All of them offer shooting in RAW format.
Some of them offer 11mm ultrawide. Vivo x90pro+ offers two tele lenses - 50mm standard lens along with a 90mm portrait lens, both of which have exceptionally high quality optics.
Sony offers a blurry tele lens and a stingy 16mm ultrawide lens with the same specs they had introduced in Xperia 1iii.
Three year old camera tech with blurry lenses incapable of shooting decent quality in auto mode for $$$$? Thank you. I'll pass.

I have tried Many, Including from Samsung, Xiaomi and Vivo, heck my main device is the Xiaomi 13 Pro, and I love what the results are on it.
However when it comes to Sony, people seem to miss what these devices are about, telling a story while leaving out the middle pages, look at his reviews of Sony for a great example, he leaves out what Sony is CLEARLY marketing to, manual photography, a phone for proper photography and video as well, it is not meant to be one where it does things like Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and so on, and that is clear the moment you open the app, but also look at their page showcasing how to approach it.
computational photography also comes at a cost, these phones often use different layers to get a result with different exposures and so on to put together 1 image, which in a lot of cases will be fine, but it comes at a cause, images often look over processed, and lose the soul of the shot, not to mention they often don't look natural.
Xiaomi does a very solid job at it, but doesn't come with the same approach as Sony, it is more basic, where sony is really leaning into the approach of a proper Camera.
Now for the noise section I agree if it is the Sony Xperia 1V and the zoom lens, though I heard they had a software update, but I only had the sony as a loan device, so cannot see the result myself, but i did mention it in my full take for the Sony Xperia 1V camera review. I did hear rumors they will upgrade the sensor on the next gen, but well we are dealing with the current Gen soooo
But if you watch MKBHD reviews (again nothing against him at all) you will see that for instance in his Sony Xperia 1V review, not only does he say things he would like to see different resulting in a phone that exsist in the form of the Sony Xperia 5 series... Which I don't get why he mentions it then, while he would mention that for other brands (like the size)
But also he doesn't use the camera again how it is marketed, from memory he even used sony xperia 1IV shots... not from the phone he was using (again could be incorrect been a while) But he doesn't showcase what this phone is targeting, what it is meant to be used like.
if I would look at his Sony reviews, as a photographer (with still a lot of learning to do granted) I would steer away from Sony, because he is showing just the basic mode at takes pictures in that, and very basic ones at it...
But I wouldn't know the amount of detail the Sony captures after that, I wouldn't know what you can do with this thing and how good that manual photography is.
For better people to truly showcase, just look at the 2 in the decsiption, and see how amazing sony is in photography, those shots often cannot be done with computational photography.
again nothing against MKBHD but... in this case.. he is using the phone wrong for how it is suppose to be used, teaching no one what this device can actually do, and I mean that respectfully.
thank you also for staying respectful as well! These kind of dicussions are perfectly fine!
And yes I am very curious how the Vivo X100 series does, and the new Xiaomi 14 Ultra that should come up at some point!

There is actually a problem that using Xperia as a mirrorless camera compared to google pixel.
Background first, for Xperia I got XZ1C 2C Xperia1 1ii 1iii before, now i'm using 5IV. For other mid to high end phones, I have Pixel 4/6Pro, iPhone 12 mini for now.
The biggest issue for Xperia when Im trying to use it as a RAW camera, is the dynamic range of single shot RAW is not as good as Pixel's 14bit computational RAW, that in one click, you got wide-dynamic-range jpeg+dng computed from multi frames, with Zero-Shutter-Lag, with short live video recorded at the same time. Xperia's RAW is single shot raw stores in 10bit dng. The limitation of sensor size restricts how many photons the sensor can store before become overexposure. There's not enough information for me to trust that everytime i can get better image through post-edit other than pre-HDR. It feels different from using Pixel as a RAW camera.
For Pixel, I'm comfident that in most situations, the jpeg looks worse than Xperia, but also I can believe its computational RAW will store enough infomation in the shot for me to fix it at post.
So when I go travelling, so that no one cares what i'm using for taking photo, i'll bring a Pixel as camera, not as a phone. I'll not bring my RP, it's too heavy. My Xperia automatically "downgraded" from a all-in-one device back to a wallet+chatting device.
When it comes to daily life, or point and shoot time, Xperia's basic mode and sometimes P mode are enough to beat every single smartphone I played. (P mode with HDR on, changing exposure compensation when needed.) But when I need lightroom, Pixel's RAW performs better.
Here's the problem, Xperia does not sit in the scope of reviewers' review method. Xperia is not a Pro camera that you always need RAW to show its performance, and it does not have outstanding RAW performance. It also is not a simple point and shoot camera that when you shoot you only just press the shutter button and done, because Xperia gives you back the control of the exporsure. Please try P mode with HDR on and play with exposure compensation, It is not a global exposure changing. +EV brings dark brighter but not so bright places to overexpose. Pixel has it's "global" exposure dial, and a "how much brighter for dark?" dial, but the direct output image looks just worse.
But why not use Pixel as a phone, you may ask. Pixel 6 Pro (and later generations of pros also) is too wide and heavy to use in single hand. I don’t want to bring a brick to anywhere in my pocket everyday...
I feel like Xperia is well designed by engineers in Sony to show what will be an Android Alpha is. So when people treat it as a point and shoot phone, it is actually not, it is a camera, you decides what the image will look like. But when people treated it as a camera, it is also not, it is a phone, it uses smartphone sensors. I think this is why most of the reviewers do not understand, or their audience do not understand what Xperia is.

Sony is trying to bridge the professional mirrorles cameras with mobile phones. The result is the Xperia 1V. They don't trying to compete with the others on who has the best HDR or fake bokeh. People nowadays are lazy, they want everything ready without any effort. Sony Xperia is a device made for photography lovers they don't follow the trends of social media. They are the top dog in sensor technology, and they sell tons of them to everyone. Like it or not, they already winning.

I switched from the Xperia 5IV to an iphone 15+. While I do think the iphone's camera are better for the format, there are things that the Xperia does far better. White balance is one thing. The Autofocus is way better on the xperia. Action shots as well. But for point and shoot I prefer the Iphone 15 most of the times. And when I want to take my time I use my Canon DSLR. So it wasn't for me in the end, but still the Xperias are way better in auto than most people think.

But the truth is point nad shoot is the type of mass demand that people have for mobile phones. If you want some extremely detailed photos where you can change many of the settings they just buy a big professional camera. I do think sony can create the best of both worlds. Have a great automatic point and shoot and a very detailed settings app like the video/cinema pro and photo pro apps.

My Experia 1 V is a camera that puts creativity in my hands that also happens to be a phone!!. I don't think phone reviewers should review this phone - it should be photography channels and sites who are more qualified to do this.
One thing so far as I can see that a DSLR's do that camera phones don't is f stop using a real iris therefore depth of field control. I suppose this is addressed partly by the bokeh control.
I think most users of this camera/phone will already be experienced photoshoppers using RAW files, etc.

One of the things that's slightly limiting the Xperia phone's capability is its unpopularity.
There are a million and one camera-related accessories such as lens and filter cases available for the iPhone despite it not really needing those, while the Xperias pretty much get none. I had to modify a generic case to get it to accept something as simple as an ND filter.

I mean i mostly agree with the message in this video and i am actually holding my Xperia 5 III in my hands right now but i'd argue that for one u can make any picture look good in lightroom and well MKBHD and other reviewers are making videos for masses and so they use methods of comparison that masses will find useful, and Sony of course isn't a phone for masses, so of course that according to tests and standards Marques sets for phones Xperias will fail. I wouldn't say they offer the wrong information or anything. His video about the phone was actually pretty fair. And i mean tbh MKBHD isn't even like a real in depth reviewer anymore anyway, he's more of a high production tech entertainer more than anything.

But the winners were just snapshots of selfies. I don't say this as wrong, it seems people that get to know the complexity of their devices are few, I find these Sonys objectively better, not overprocessed. But well :T

The biggest issue is the monetary gains is made from shouting about Samsung/Apple mobile phones and their cameras.
On the s21 ultra I use expert raw which is a bit like using a camera interface. I do feel they still feel a bit overprocessed for raw format though.
Xiaomi and Sony are really aimed at photographers though . Unfortunately xiaomi is hard to get the best products in Europe.
Only when micro four thirds becomes a thing in mobile devices will be able to compare them to larger sensors with a degree of scrutiny.
A mft sensor is roughly half the size of a full frame sensor in terms of light capture ability. Referred to as a crop factor. Meaning f2 on a phone is the same as f4 full frame I'm equivalent lens length and field of view.
The general person might know this or care.

Interesting take. I just watched the MKBHD video before this and I didn't get what you got. It seemed clear to me that he didn't want to change the 1 V much at all. He equated it to the best machines Porsche makes. Instead he wanted something that was made for the masses. He specifically mentioned the 5 V (I think?) and said he wanted a "sweet spot" with a 1080p 120Hz display. His point about P&S features (automatic camera) was that it's what most average phone users want. Not for the 1 V, for the Porsche Cayenne version of the Xperia line. Everything you show about the capabilities and what you have to do to achieve it is exactly what I thought MKBHD was getting at. My thoughts on it anyway.

I understand what you're saying, but with the changes he wants it became a Sony Xperia 5 series, it wasn't the one. It is like saying let's remove the s-pen on the s24 Ultra, make it the corners more curved for nicer feel in the hand and a bit smaller as well, then you start to describe a phone that is already there the s24+.
And then in his reviews he often neglects how the camera is supposed to be used. I know this is a limited market phone, but for those who want to know about the phone and want to learn how good it is, his reviews do nothing to tell me how the camera is, because he uses the basic features, he only looks on the surface when it comes to these sony phones without going into how the camera works on this kind of phone if that makes sense. This video is not meant as an attack, but at the same time, if I would be someone who is intrested in buying a phone like this and I watch his reviews I haven't learned anything on how it performs, how good it is, but also it's weakness with the periscope, because he doesn't utulize the power that is given. And from memory, used pictures of a last years device on the review of the 1V.
Hope that makes a bit more sense in terms of where I am coming from.

He explained in the video that the test was basically simulating a person taking the phone of their pockets a snaping a picture. If you are going to take their raw files and heavily edit them you're going to have different results obviously. iPhone, Galaxy S23 and Pixel 8 pro delivery beautiful haw files with quality much better than what was shown. But that wasn't the point of the the test. Also the crappy portrait mode results weren't user fault in my opinion, sony should solve those problems if they want to stay competitive and not just blame the user.

    • @ThroughJermainesLens
      @ThroughJermainesLens  7 месяцев назад +1

I think you are missing the point, look at his reviews of Sony devices, and what sony is marketing it as. These phones aren't often ment for the point and shoot, though it will do well with auto mode (MKBHD uses basic I think, which can be iffy) But that is beside the point. If you market a phone for the proffesionals/photographers like sony does, showcasing step by step in my shorts how to use the phone to get the best out of it, then in your review you should showcase that, you should showcase what it is cabable of doing with how it markets itself, else you aren't leaning anything about what the phone does for those who plan to buy the phone, that is his job as a reviewer, instead when it comes to Sony he doens't, in his "review" of the 1V he said things he would like to see different, like size and screen resolution, things he mentioned are on the Sony Xperia 5 series... And again... not highlighting what this phone is cabable of, and if you come to watch a review of a Sony and you aren't show the pages in between, and cut a BIG part of the story, then of course you haven't learned anything.
It paints a very unfair picture of in this case Sony. That is why I made this video, again not hate against him, I have spoken with him before and he is a kind dude, but I do feel like he should make that picture clear with the size of the audience he has that pushes him up in the search bar.
if I would look at sony reviews, I simply wouldn't have known how great they are if it wasn't for the 2 I linked in the desciption.

I think that Samsung fans and review sites behave appallingly as it is as though they are paid by Samsung to give Sony bad reviews and or to troll positive Sony articles.
Mrwhostheboss is a bought and paid for lowly Samsung shrill as just now he has done a Samsung S24 preview and literally bragged that the Samsung s24 now has 4k 120 fps. He in the preview did not state that Sony Xperia literally have had that since the year 2020. What is more Sony Xperia has done it BETTER by making all the three sensors capable of 4k at 120fps- since 2022.
The problem unlike lowly Samsung is that SONY do not PAY for reviews and as such the like of the more let us say ‘Morally deficient people like Whostheboss and MKHD have no time for Sony as simply they don’t get paid.

    Let's dig in...
I will speak on whatever I want and no one will do anything about it and I speak on that because there's a lot of folks who will give pushback about the FACTS. They will see this video and come flying with their capes on, cheerleading with their pom poms, because they love their iPhone/Samsung/Pixels. It's ironic that ALL phones that actually have real features get ignored, shunned, and bypassed. For example, how come there's barely any mention of smartphones with headphone jacks, IR Blasters, and internal SD storage? How come when those subjects come up, some bozo says they are not important? So this Sony is not what most phones are. Most phones now over $1000 actually offer you NOTHING except the illusion that it's better than the year before. They do a couple of software tweaks, they claim they are more durable, they claim the IP rating is better, yet what moron does not know who to protect a smartphone? It's called a CASE, do not drop it, generally use common sense.,etc. Let's take the Note series and Iphones for example. You have been buying the same exact phone for at least 5 years, with the only difference being my Note was the last one with internal storage/SD card slot. I bought the phone otherwise I would have gotten NO case, NO charger, and a lot of bloatware from my service. Instead I have an unlocked phone that I install whatever I want, including FDroid apps, which are open source, free, and quite useful .
Consider the Note 20 U costs over $1000 while the Note 3 was $780 and had replaceable battery, IR Blaster, Headphone jack, and SD storage. So the point is, they are purposely scamming us to buy expensive phones, which the midrange ones have the REAL features. That is why you cannot walk into a Verizon nor TMobile store and see OnePlus, Sony, Oppo, nor any other brand that have these features. That is why they have not told you the REAL story about what the Sony can really do. Then they tell lies of omission, like the foldable OnePlus phone has an IR Blaster, and I only found ONE reviewer who mentioned it. Bottom line is, if you want me to pay more, bring back ALL those features that I had for 2/3 the price, give me a case, give me a charger, give me all the accessories we need. I recall almost every review of the Sony Xperia V, they barely mention the camera, they avoided the headphone jack, and made up a narrative that Sony phones are not on the same level, while they befuddle and bamboozle the public to buy the same phone over and over. How you going to make titanium a big deal and the phones are falling apart??? I am in to replace a few phones soon aND i definitely want a great camera I can control and A headphone jack, because I primarily use real headphones with a cable. That is why when I travel I hook my headphones into my tablet which has a headphone jack and since I bought actual cameras, like my 2 Sonys, I do not worry about most smartphone cameras.

    • @ThroughJermainesLens
      @ThroughJermainesLens  7 месяцев назад +2

Oh I called it out so many times about the removal of the headphone jack and MicroSD AND charger, it is annoying you almost have to compliment a company for doing the bare minimum when it comes to giving you a charger under the image of "enviroment" while removing it results in people buying it seperatly, being send seperatly in seperate boxes! Then we have the 3.5... I still have many headphones and they still work perfectly well, the ones I've gotten when Samsung was good, s8+s10 I still have them from and they work perfectly fine! Heck they made a whole video how they still had a charger, headphone jack and MicroSD.... then removed it... Only reason is that they can then start selling chargers, and bluetooth headsets that will lead to more waist, then we have the microSD, the only reason that is removed is so that people buy the ones with more memory, the more exspensive ones, that is it!
