I had to pay for oil change every month when I had my ICE car. Afterwards I only purchased EVs and put 50k miles and literally paid zero for maintainer, not even tires. Only purchased a set of winter tires which I would have done it anyway with any car. It is great feeling for sure, but sometimes I miss my Corolla, because it was paid for. My Tesla has monthly payments, but I have to remind myself the savings I had with the Tesla. It is easy to consider them given. But they are indeed not.
If you do a lot of miles like me, I would highly recommend one. If you don’t, it is a nice splurge which you can resell with minimum losses. Tax credits help massively when bought new.

It used 3500 gallons of gas and I changed the oil 12 times at a cost of $27 each time (I do it myself). It used two sets of tires at $550 each set and three sets of brake pads/one set of rotors at $250 total cost (I do the brakes myself) plus two alignments. That's it. $16,774 - let's call it $17,000 in total. Probably 1/4 the cost of your car so far. I also has a little wind leak issue when it was brand new which their mobile service fixed. We recently bought a model Y for my wife and I can see Tesla has made significant quality improvements. Her car has no panel gap issues, all the doors close more smoothly. etc. It just feels a bit tighter and more refined than mine. But we've had nothing significant to worry about with either car...except that I'm on my 3rd windshield thanks to a daily commute with construction everywhere. A rock recently cracked the top glass on my M3... Best thing that Tesla did for me, there is a 50 mile drive where there is heavy traffic for 25 miles. I just let the auto pilot control it and sit back and relax and listen to my Chill music, looking at the frustrated drivers. changing lanes to get ahead by 3 cars. When I want to drive, I just hit the gas (electric padel) and off I go leaving everyone behind. Then engage the auto pilot and let the car do the driving. I am enjoying my Tesla a lot. I have BMW 330i and Merc E350, but I don't even want to touch them any more. At first it was very frustrating when I did not know how to change something, however you can just talk to your car, Turn on the Wipers, Turn on the lights, Lets go home, radio station setting, call someone etc. It is like having a gas station at home, plug in forget it. When I come to sit in the car my mirrors, my radio, my seat, my AC setting are all adjusted just with my phone. When my wife is going, all her adjustments are done with her preferences. Just imagine, if you don't want to drive your BMW and Merc and go back to Tesla every time, it is telling you something.

People complain about charging time during road trips and most have never driven a Tesla, let alone road tripped in one. My wife and I drove from Massachusetts to Minnesota after purchasing our MSLR+ and it was a lovely experience. Quiet, cheap (from a fuel perspective), fun, and enjoyable. Yes, our average stop was 15-30min but by the time you go to the bathroom, get some snacks and take a leg stretch, you aren’t waiting long at all. And I’ll say that despite it taking a bit longer, I didn’t feel like we took a cross country road trip because it forces you to stop a bit longer. I’ll never own an ICE car as a daily again.

I've been driving minimal annual miles in my Miata for the past 11 years (my 4th sports car), but have been seriously considering a model Y for my 80th birthday, coming up in less than two years. The Miata is not a practical car but it is great fun. If I had a lot more money I might buy the Roadster. Ideally, I'd like an electric Miata: something fun, not a super-go-faster, at a more reasonable price point. Your personal take on the Tesla ownership experience added color to my own impressions formed without first hand experience. Next time there's an opportunity to rent a Tesla, I want to do that. We're very nearly in the same boat! 30 months after depositing $1k on my Tesla I took delivery of my red M3P in September 2018 - during that brief window when free lifetime Supercharging was offered as an incentive to upgrade to the Performance trim. Which means 97% of my miles driven have been Supercharged for free, and a battery capacity that's declined 11%. Even with 126k miles in the rearview mirror it still conjures today the same driving delights as when I first got behind the wheel. Maybe it's because of the 3.1 seconds 0-60 Performance speed, maybe it's tapping into the always available on-demand rollercoaster, but my lifetime Wh/mile are 330. Best car I ever bought. Maybe the last car I'll ever need!

I live in MT and haven’t had issues relating to the cold climate (I get a lot of those kinds of questions). I also don’t miss the oil changes and getting gas every week. It’s amazing how little service these cars need. I appreciate your observations about autopilot, but I bought FSD when it was cheap, and have not regretted it. I love FSD now, its really evolved into a smoothly operating feature that drives like a human would. Where FSD is really valuable is when driving in urban and metro areas that I’ve never been in before. I drove down to Mexico City last winter, and all through Mexico I didn’t have FSD. The navigation worked great, and was invaluable, but I missed FSD.

I also have a 2018 Model 3. Tesla Mobile came to my house recently to replace the rear wiring harness that is a recall item on older vehicles. Almost all of the maintenance that I have needed has been done with mobile service even though I'm only about 4 miles from the service center. My key card cracked and stopped working and my other card wasn't programmed for the car so Tesla mobile came to my house and gave me a new card and reprogramed both cards for the car using their laptop. They only charged my $23.25 total; $15 for the new card plus $8.25 for programming. My daughter had to pay over a $100 to get a second key for her Honda at the Stealership.

I've only dimmed back windows with 80% foil in a ppf garage, looks awesome. Your car looks like brand new after 100k miles. The battery degradation measured by some folks on YT is around 7% after 3 years which is great in my opinion for a Long Range or Performance models it doesn't make a big difference. If you charge slowly at home within 20-80% battery capacity, the degradation is lower compared with superchargers.

Now it has 148k mile and I have the low voltage battery needs changing message but there is no highe voltage battery issues. I guess it will degrade but usually if they die they suddenly loose charge and charge slow and it usually a single cell issue pull the entire pack. It’s usually happening over 200k sometimes earlier on older models.

You have a 4 year old car with 100,000 miles with 6% battery loss. Assuming you replace the batteries at 400,000/ another 12 years what will be the cost to replace them? And with battery technology advancing and costs for those batteries declining, there's no reason not to believe costs will plummet. And with the sheer number of Model 3 (and Model Y) sold there will most likely be after market companies offering battery replacement options.

Its been a pretty amazing car for sure. It blows my mind how a lot of people just want to hate on them and say they will never own one. That is fine if you don't want one but to hate something for no real reason makes me wonder why one would go watch a review online about something they already think they hate then spew hate on it. If you don't want one then go watch a video about a mustang or a corvette or something and make positive comments about it and tell all those people how much you hate EV's lol.

Hi Ed and thank you for your honest opinions. I don't understand why there is so much polarization when it comes to electric versus combustion vehicles. I was born in a horribly smoggy 1959 Los Angeles and I know what happens when there were no pollution controls. California took the lead and made their own emissions requirements. I hated what those controls did to our previously powerful muscle cars. Today's Los Angeles has much cleaner air and the mountains that I only saw a few days per year are now visible much of the time.
We didn't know about greenhouse gasses back then and now we need to stop using burning petroleum.
We still need oil to make all of the products that we all use. All cars, including Teslas, contain lots of plastics, vinyl and things that I don't know about.
Yes, it does take more energy to build an electric car, but that car has no tailpipe which would continue adding carbon to our atmosphere. I would eventually like to see our energy grid burn no greenhouse gasses and the grid is getting greener all of the time.
Nothing is perfect and the worst thing that's happened to the earth in billions of years is us, creatures that invent things that can destroy our planet and that is why we have to be so carful.
