      I bought a used Lexus LS400 for $3500 and put on 70,000 miles and it still runs like a champion. It needed a $600 repair in that time. It used 3500 gallons of gas and I changed the oil 12 times at a cost of $27 each time (I do it myself). It used two sets of tires at $550 each set and three sets of brake pads/one set of rotors at $250 total cost (I do the brakes myself) plus two alignments. That's it. $16,774 - let's call it $17,000 in total. Probably 1/4 the cost of your car so far. It's about the money for most people, and spending 4 times the money to start instead of a good used car is not a good deal.

    Very useful video. I've been driving minimal annual miles in my Miata for the past 11 years (my 4th sports car), but have been seriously considering a model Y for my 80th birthday, coming up in less than two years. The Miata is not a practical car but it is great fun. If I had a lot more money I might buy the Roadster. Ideally, I'd like an electric Miata: something fun, not a super-go-faster, at a more reasonable price point. Your personal take on the Tesla ownership experience added color to my own impressions formed without first hand experience. Next time there's an opportunity to rent a Tesla, I want to do that. Thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts. Very well done.

    Your battery wear seems very good. You are taking good care of your battery. The battery replacement thing is just an unknown and we really don't know how long these will last. Time will tell. Hopefully prices for batteries will fall significantly so that it isn't a massive expense in the future.
    Your car looks great. That is good to know that living out in the boonies that Tesla will still come out to take care of things. How far away is a service center from where you live? Did they give you a loaner car when you had to go to a service center?
    I would still like to have a HUD or something similar to the way the S and X is done. I would still rather have some basic knobs and buttons for common access things that get changed a lot. I see some aftermarket products now where you can add a display and some basic knobs/controls. Sad that you have to go to an aftermarket company to get those things to make the driver experience better.
    Phantom braking is still a big issue. Auto wipers and auto high beams are known to malfunction. I am evaluating the purchase of a Model 3 and these are common reported complaints I am seeing. Firm stiff ride and road/wind noise seems to be another one. Build quality issues seem to be mentioned by many. So I am concerned. Feedback like yours helps.
    Slow down, enjoy the drive. If people don't like the way I drive then stay off of the sidewalk! LOL I get in the right lane and just enjoy the drive. Thanks for sharing.

    • @edfessler

      When I first got the car the nearest service center was a little under 2 hours away. Now I have one 30 minutes away. I did get a loaner car when I went in for service. I am not sure if that would always happen, but it did for me.
      The only control I wish they had made separate from the screen is the wiper control. They do have a button on the turn signal to initiate a single swipe, which is good, but I would have preferred a rotating control on the end of the turn signal. The rain detection works pretty well, but still has its moments where I need to override it. The automatic high/low beams I find to work well, and you can override that with pushing the turn signal arm forward or backward. I think there is also an option in the menu system.
      Wind/road noise is going to be more noticeable when you do not have gas powered engine noise to cover it up. That is just the way it is.
      As far as the build quality, I have never looked at my car and thought “Gee, there is an extra millimeter of space between these two panels“. However, I have looked at my car and thought “Gee, I sure am glad I don’t have to spend money on those ridicules gas prices!”. LOL
      Maybe I am just not as particular as some :-)

      @@edfessler Wipers, lights, and climate controls come to mind for knobs and buttons for me. They get used so often and should be in a common easy to reach place without having to take my attention away from the road to operate them.
      I see in the leaked Highland update pics and video that Tesla is pushing everything to the screen and eliminating the stalks. I think that is a bad move. It may mean I have to accelerate my buying decision before they remove what few controls they have.
      I think another source of that wind and road noise is the fact that there is no roof, or roof liner to absorb noise. That glass just acts like an echo chamber and provides no insulation or sound deadening.
      I have seen some of these cars where they are pointing out the panel fit issues and some are pretty bad. It looks like it isn't consistent either. I have seen some 2023's where they look great, and then I have seen others recently where it looks terrible.
      Strangely the contrast is I have watched many that have the China built cars and they don't appear to have as many issues. Seems like Fremont needs to learn some things from Shanghai.
      Thanks again for sharing your car and your story. That was very helpful.

      @sooocheesy Год назад

      @@Longsnowsm I have 3 co-workers and myself who all own Model 3s (2019/2022/2023 - all Fremont built). There's no panel gaps or paint issues or any of the other things people tend to point to as "build quality" issues. I think the whole panel gap thing was just way overblown and one picture of a bad one is all you see, posted about, but the 99.5% of cars that are fine don't get counted.
      I would say that road noise and a few rattles in the cabin (which started after several years of driving) are the only real things that could be improved build quality-wise. The road noise isn't just because there is no engine so you suddenly hear it more.. I've sat in gas cars that are definitely far quieter even with the engine noise added in. But if you're on a smooth asphalt road it's extremely quiet. It seems all the noise is from the tires and they just didn't do anything to prevent it from reaching the cabin. I even pulled up the carpet and put in some noise dampening material and found that yes, there is a tiny bit from the factory, but it's very minimal.
      As for the HUD or button argument, I'm pretty sure almost everyone is very happy with only the touch screen/steering wheel controls. I actually find that driving a non-Tesla car now is kind of ridiculous and far more confusing than the screen UI. You are just used to it already, so your brain will assume changing it will be confusing .. but it really isn't and prefer the screen over 50 buttons any day. Plus voice controls are excellent and will do anything you want with one button.

      @@Longsnowsm I should mention that I would 100% buy one again even with the few minor complaints. it's a better driving and ownership experience than any other car I've owned/rented/test driven in my life. People might make a few points that could use improvement but overall, they are super reliable, maintenance-free and great to drive.

    My gas powered small SUV has gradually lost MPG on its way to 130k miles despite consistent maintenance schedule so I am looking at a Tesla for my next vehicle. The inconvenience alone for proper maintenance of a gas vehicle in taking time off to get it done or time to do it yourself and disposing of materials is more than made up for with the added cost for an EV for many people.

    Great, candid video! I'm a new owner with 125 miles as I write this! A lot of point brought up is conversation I've had with friends with doubt and skepticism to some degree and that's natural. EVs are really new TECH and its going to take a little rewiring the brain in how to make your EV be as beneficial as possible. I've come up with way MORE positives than negatives and therefore made the purchase. No buyer's remorse! Will there be problems? I'm sure just like ICE cars have them. I just think somewhat different. I spent recent money on my Acura MDX 12' for oil change, power stirring pump, a number of seals needed to be done in the rear axle( mileage 161k) all this was about 3k but the warranty covered it beside my deductible. This mean I've had the expense of a paying for a warranty, maintenance outside of that, payments, insurance and gas! NOW that car is up to par and be ready for the winter here in COLO. if and when I don't want to put my LR3 in the snow. I really think for anyone the idea is to really think of all the pluses after at least doing a TEST DRIVE and weighing in whatever negative you have. If the PLUSES are more than the NEGATIVES... knowing that the TECH is only going to get better, especially with range and lower cost, you could wait for all that. But if you can find a way to get into an EV(Tesla IMO being the best option) GO FOR IT! Hold on to your ICE as needed if you like! If you have Solar would be another great reason to get an EV. Remember the GOV may be able to help as well.

    You may not have to change your oil, but you do wait every time that you have to charge the car - especially on road trips. That is mitigated somewhat by fast charging networks, but still it is not as fast as filling a car with gas. So on road trips, you will spend 30 minutes to charge your car on a fast charger (if you can find one), where a gas car requires about 5 minutes to fill. I agree that ICE cars require more maintenance.
    I also do agree that having solar and using an EV is a smart choice. You are saving somewhere around $3000.00 a year in comparison with a gas-powered car. So you have saved approximately $12,000 of your purchase price for the car in your four years of ownership. That along with the $7500 rebate probably makes this car (roughly) affordable, though you bought the $60,000 version.
    Great video. You do a great job in honestly explaining the good things and the shortcomings of the car. You are a likable person that is very congenial.

      @@jamesdawny1855 Sure, my comment was not a criticism, it was an observation, because you didn't mention the charging time on road trips. That charging time can be significant without a fast charger.
      One other thing you forgot to mention was that often there are no electric chargers available at charging stations. The greatly exacerbates your wait time to charge your car on a road trip.
      Another issue is charging EVs in very cold weather. Many EVs don't charge well in cold weather. Some EVs won't charge at all when it is really cold.
      Also, most EVs lose about a third (or more) of their capacity in cold weather. Combined with slower charging speeds in cold weather, an EV owner can be hating life if they are using public charge stations.
      My point in saying all of this is that there is more to the story than what you covered. That being said, I think you did a pretty good job with your video.

    People don’t realise ice cars are literally wearing out every time you drive them, but they’re concerned about battery health. I mean would you road trip a 12 year old car across country without worrying about it breaking down people who do lots of road trips generally buy relatively new vehicles because they want something that’s reliable. People that buy cheaper cars tend to drive locally and therefore won’t need as many miles, and when the batteries are completely done and really no good now for the vehicle they will be able to recycle them for people that have solar panelled roofs for battery storage. There is no need for it yet as the batteries are lasting longer than people think. But as more EV cars are sold there will be recycling companies that will buy back the batteries when their done and no longer useable. The average life span of any car is around 14 years, yes lots will last longer if not used as much but in general a well used car lasts around 14 years

    100% range doesn't honestly matter when you have access to the Superchargrer network. You never drive 100%-0%. It's more like 70%-15% and then you charge. As long as you can still Supercharge at max speed (my 2018 Model 3 has NO reduction in Supercharging speed) there is no practical difference.

With the recent price reduction, I might be able to finally get one, but I'm still figuring out if I'd rather go for an older one with things like FSD and AWD that I couldn't normally afford or go for a new basic one that'll have the color I want (blue) and a solid warrantee. I think buying a used Tesla seems a lot less scary than you'd expect (especially considering reviews like yours).
    Something I always wonder about Teslas before 2021: how is the road noise? I'm really curious how much that window upgrade really even matters. They did add heated steering wheel and power trunk in '21 also, so those are still a consideration, but I wonder if it's even an issue. Since I don't think you mentioned it, I doubt it is an issue.

    • @edfessler
      @edfessler  Год назад +3

      I don't really notice the road noise. Of course you don't have the ICE engine to contribute to the noise. Everything else is just the standard wind and tire noise. Not sure it would be that much different than most other cars. I know the tires have a foam insert to help.
      The power trunk would be nice, but not a big deal. However, I was very disappointed that they did not have a heated steering wheel when I got my M3 in 2018. My hands are almost always cold, so for me personally that would really be nice. I know some people I have spoken with think it would be a complete non-issue for them, so I’m sure it just depends on how your body works. I try to remind myself, “Cold hands, warm heart”. LOL

    • @kyleb8117
      @kyleb8117 Год назад +1

      @@edfessler Sounds like road noise wouldn't be a deal breaker for me, so that's good to know. Power trunk is big but my current car isn't powered and it does piss me off sometimes when it closes itself, but it's not the end of the world.
      That was a surprise perk of my 2015 Nissan Leaf S. I didn't expect much, but it had heated steering and I was really surprised (and so was the dealer taking me on the test drive). Maybe I could find some wheel cover that's warm or doesn't get super cold, but I don't know. I'm currently suffering to enjoy the life of owning an EV, so I think I'd put up with a lot of crap. Haha. I love the "Cold hands, warm heart." 👍

      What difference would being stuck in traffic in Winter make? An EV uses zero energy when it's stationary. And in any case, an EV battery is large enough to run a HOUSE for 3 to 4 days, so warming 2 cubic metres of car interior isn't going to trouble it for at least a week to ten days.......

    I bought my current car back in 2007, for people who keep the same car for many years, battery health is a issue so i would like to know how much it cost to replace/fix out of warranty.?

    • @MrDomestosWC
      @MrDomestosWC Год назад +5

      It's expensive, Tesla charges about $15-20k depending on the model. They basically give you a new battery, repair is usually not an option, it's a full replacement. There are shops already that specialize in battery repairs and they charge about 50% of that. You remember the first prius? When it first came out people were screaming that it was a garbage full of technology that nobody would be able to fix, and that the car would be garbage after 10 years when the battery dies. The technology turned out to be very simple and there is many shops out there specializing in toyota's hybrids only, the battery can be replaced for around $3k and it usually needs that at about 200k miles, or 15 years. With that being said, there are teslas with over 300k miles that are still going strong and had no previous serious issues. Calculate how much it costs to run regular maintenance on a gas vehicle for 300k miles + gas cost. Then, after 300k miles, if the gas vehicle isn't dead already, it will likely have other costly issues (the biggest one is usually the transmission, then you have the turbo, injectors etc.) To rebuild a transmission it costs $3k minimum, that's if you're lucky (I've seen $8k bills). Turbo rebuilds are also $1.5-3k. Injectors are $1k minimum nowadays too. Timing belt? Head gasket? You get the story. The worst part is that usually a transmission malfuncioning, or injectors, or turbo can cause other parts to malfunction as well. EVs don't have any of those elements and they are actually very simple. So overall it depends on what you need. If the cost of owning a vehicle is an issue for you, it's best to buy a used mid class 5yr old one with lower milage (already depreciated), run it for 5-10k years till it gets to about 150k miles and get rid off it, repeat the process. A used toyota/lexus usually does the job with minimum maintenance. Keeping a vehicle for too long will likely cost you more than replacing it with a newer one with low milage. Don't ask me how I know but I learnt that in a bad way - after owning an used cheap vehicle for nearly 3 years (my first serious job) that needed constant minor and major repairs + towing + uber and all that I put all the bills together (just the repair bills) and realized that I could have bought a much younger vehicle of the same class for what I paid for the vehicle + repair bills. My parents always told me "we can't afford to buy garbage" and then I learnt what that meant. It's a shame but it's usually the lower income people who end up with garbage vehicles and tons of repairs, but because it's a circle and they need a vehicle to work they keep putting the money into the repairs while they can't afford to spend a larger amount of money to buy a reliable vehicle that would cost them less in a long term run. In that case it doesn't matter if you drive an EV or a gas vehicle. I own a gas vehicle (lexus RXL) as well as the tesla model 3. They both perfectly accompany each other. My tesla is perfect for everyday use and short trips (like 500 miles total). My lexus is perfect for longer trips and hauling my entire family around. I love them both. There's no bad and good, there's a vehicle for everyone, but like everything on this planet, they all have their lifespan.

    So many Tesla haters since the beginning of Tesla and even more haters now but these cars are amazing. Yes their build quality isn’t perfection but you also have to look at the pricing. The base m3 and my are affordable with the incentives depending on your state and the supercharging network is incredible and that’s why other manufacturers are partnering with Tesla so they can use their chargers.
    I drive a Chevy bolt and I bought it over a m3 due to the price.. I picked it up brand new for $23k after incentives but I’ll be getting a m3 or Y next year. I started to drive more and the 50kw/hr charging on the bolt is slow compared to teslas charging.

    I'm pretty sure I have the correct video but a while back I made a comment about the chrome trim on the model 3 and how I have it as well on my 2020 performance and I think it's much nicer than the black trim, well I wanted to tell you a funny story I live here in Las Vegas and I do Uber part-time with my model 3 mine is the pearl white with dark tint the performance one with the carbon fiber spoiler and the dark 20-in wheels which I had dipped in a clear gloss which makes them glossy instead of the matte color so it gives a car a unique look but the funny thing that I want to tell you was this lady was jumping up and down when I picked her up at the Bellagio and she goes "wow I finally get to ride in a nice Tesla! She goes this must be a really expensive one because every single one I've ridden in so far is a base model and I finally get to ride in one of these nice ones!" Well eventually she went on to tell me that she thought that the ones with the black door handles and the black trim the newer ones were all base models and the ones with the chrome trim were the expensive ones and how beautiful mine is and it really made me feel good so I just thought I would tell you that I thought it was pretty cool that she was so excited!! On the other hand, there is probably 10X the amount of nuclear power to generate electricity while the US is still 60-70% fossil fuel and coal. The needs and demands of cars in the EU is NOT anywhere near the same as the US. People over there drive around in cars that resemble pimples. Here, men are men, and sheep are scared!

      @@Beafybrian we had a plug in Pacifica hybrid which was great for when we had it. Zero complaints. One downside to the hybrids that I came to recognize is usually overlooked: they have double the engine / motor maintenance / potential problems vs a pure EV or pure ICE as they have both propulsion systems. Still a good choice I think when the pure EV doesn't fit the requirements for some reason (other than FUD)

    You have a 4 year old car with 100,000 miles with 6% battery loss. Assuming you replace the batteries at 400,000/ another 12 years what will be the cost to replace them? And with battery technology advancing and costs for those batteries declining, there's no reason not to believe costs will plummet. And with the sheer number of Model 3 (and Model Y) sold there will most likely be after market companies offering battery replacement options.

      I think it's not a given, that batteries will be cheaper in the future.

    Great colour choice. Our red dual motor has over 100,000km (62,000 miles) since delivery in Sept 2018. I love that with the free over the air software updates, it's better than the day it was delivered! Map software is always current, without additional fees (compared to our Chrysler van $$$ for updates).
    The "come to you" service is underestimated. No time wasted at the garage waiting for your vehicle to be serviced.
    People need to experience it to believe it.

    It's interesting, people will see their MPGs drop and not bat an eye since that's part of a car getting old and worn, but when an EV loses 4% battery people lose their minds. Lower MPG is less mileage per full tank, and degrading battery is less mileage per charge.

    Watching this in my 2018 LR Model 3 currently 290 miles displayed at full. No issues so far. Only maintenance has been windshield wipers, 12v battery and a set of tires. Car drives exactly the same as the first day I got it. Best car ownership in smiles per mile ever!

    Great video. I bought my Model 3 (same colour) back in October 2018 and it’s been nothing but fun and excitement. Battery degradation is similar, but like you said it doesn’t really matter, as long as you have a good number of miles in the battery, you’ll be fine. Your cat stole the show, by the way.
