Hi Chris, Good video. The repair costs you quoted appear to be only the cost of parts. Where are the labor costs if the car was done at a repair centre. Does Tesla not charge labor?
My 2021 model 3 sr+ has almost 64,000 miles on it. I haven’t had to do anything except new tires and filter. I got the white interior and used it for Uber a LOT but they still look brand new. This car has saved me a lot of money on maintenance and fuel costs compared to my previous 2018 ford edge titanium that broke down after only 52,000 miles with regular maintenance.
I do Uber too like you and am looking forward to buying my first ev and Teslas are promising. Sounds like a great car for me personally and for work as well 💯 Stay safe out there my fellow Uber driver 👋🏼🙂
You avoided to mention the insurance cost because it is super not cool, Tesla are very expensive to insure because they can get totaled with even minor damage and repair costs of collision are vety high and normally take much longer time.
I just traded in my 2020 Model 3 for a 2023 Model Y. I’m a roadtrip warrior so I built up 115k miles on my M3 and it was still going strong with the occasional visit to the service center for new tires/rotation front suspension replaced twice, a low voltage battery replacement once and that’s it. If it weren’t for the 120k warranty on the battery and motors I would have kept it; however with the Model Y I now have more space and a newer and better vehicle. I hope to have the same luck with my Y as I did with the 3. Never buying another gas car again although I do have a backup gas car that I rarely drive but still get the needed maintenance on.
I’m keeping my Honda ICE car of course as a daily/work car. Taking the ev (Tesla) on nights out or weekends. It’s smart to keep a gas car because EV are not solid yet or practical.
Don’t call it a M3. Maybe TM3 would be best. Everyone will automatically assume you are talking about a bmw M3. Despite you not mentioning bmw at all. 😅 Can you explain the warranty thing? So you got rid off it cuz you dont trust it after the 120k warranty?
@@dnegel9546 The tesla community understands that I’m referring to a model 3 especially when that’s the first thing I mentioned. As for the warranty it’s not that I didn’t trust it, I never said that. After the warranty for the battery and motors are expired you can no longer get work done on those units without paying an arm and a leg but this is the same for any vehicle that no longer has a warranty, kind of like a BMW M3 with a bad transmission that has gone out of warranty. The other reasons for trading it in was “more room” and it was an “updated version compared to the 2020 M3 😜 I had.
You haven't run into the squeaky ball joint issue yet? I love how the glass has that red/orange reflection on the earlier Teslas, wish it was still around.
I lost my message ... was asking for any short bits of additional information you might have on updates ... the release notes don't seem to cover everything.
Roughly $105/month in California electricity is crazy good considering it’s probably $350+ of equal fuel related costs per month with avg fuel cost there. Thanks for the break down!
It's very unlikely to go bad, but it's still a concern due to the high cost. I guess kind of a trade off between less maintenance but with small chance of battery going bad.
This is how buying a car in the communist states was.. they had zero qc so you had to take it to a mechanic right after you bought it to make sure it actually works
TCO should include depreciation. This can easily make up for or wipe out all the other costs. I would check comparable private party asking prices on Auto Trader (forget KBB) and subtract that from the original sales price to get the figure. I bought my used Model S at a time when they appeared to hold their value really well, but then Elon bought prices down by $40k on new ones, which by itself wiped out about $20k of value on top of typical historical depreciation (not counting the used car value fluctuations in 2020-2022)..
my biggest concern with a Tesla is the lack of service centers. Can alot of this stuff be done by any old shop or does tesla need to do it? I live at least 4 hours away from a tesla specific center
Ya service can be issue like he said in the video also a rear end took month+ to fix so defiantly gonna need a beater car that month+ for some bumper damage is very long time
You can always judge the potential cost of maintenance by the cost of service contracts that begin after the factory warranty ends. The high cost of only a two year Tesla maintenance agreement is scary...
What Tesla maintenance agreement. Never heard of such a thing. The 1st service due on our Model 3 is at 200,000km when they check the battery coolant level, next service at 400,000km
@@ohger1 In my 50 years running businesses (and a couple of Municipalities) I think I've had a few. It's the reference to one for Tesla that I'm commenting on. With a service interval of somewhere between once evry 2 years to once every 10 years Tesla don't offer them and it would be nonsensical to seak one elsewhere. Our Landcruiser has a fixed price service agreement but as a twin turbo diesel its service interval is 10,000 km, so 5-6 services a year.
@@soils1111 What I am referring to is a "service contract", so "maintenance agreement" (which is also an accepted term) is where the confusion is I believe. So my point is that the cost of a service contract for any given vehicle is based on the projected payout the warranty provider (either OEM or aftermarket) will pay to repair the vehicle over the course of the contract which will allow them to make money selling it. I don't have one for my 2018 S, but I intend to replace it with another before the factor warranty expires. BTW, a service contract for a Tesla does NOT include the traction battery, which is concerning, and why I'll upgrade to a new S before my battery warranty expires.
Great video. If you are comparing between luxury brands. What I wonder is how many people that are buying luxury brands care about optimizing costs that much? If you really cared about optimizing cost the BMW would not be the comparison and as such depreciation would be a huge factor in this decision. People are likely to spend 18-25k in depreciation over the 5 year period. For those that can get a model 3 from 2018 with 50-70k miles it does seem like a smart purchase for cost optimization given the expected life of 150-200k of the battery at 80%
Not sure. Might be because it's so technical you can only get it done through Tesla. Not like you can get a new battery from amazon and have someone install it
That price breakdown at 3:01. 😳 The problem with Tesla is that the value is highly over inflated. Aside from the major price cuts because of Tesla loosing market share, buying one used and out of warranty is a huge risk if the EV battery can break down at 50k miles. Your friend paid $14,000 for 'long range', but my 2017 Prius gets over 500 miles on a full tank. I bought the Prius used at $12.5k. So it's crazy that long range and FSD cost as much as entire used Toyotas that last much longer in both range and total miles before break down compares to Tesla model 3 and Y. Yes hybrids and ICE need and oil change, but most people can afford an oil change, not a new EV battery.
After 50,000 miles on my 2018 Tesla model 3, I had the third break light replaced, antifreeze refilled and seat sensor driver side replaced added to $1,000.
Chris You live in California. Tesla's are not everywhere for instance in St Louis, Also the radiators get debris between them and this stops the air flow. They should be cleaned every 60K
Yeah, but you guys burn baby seals for electricity down there 😂. Coal… you burn coal 😊 I’m just jealous of your cheap electricity. I’ll take SoCal weather though. Just love our harsh winters 😂
You are mistaken if you believe that the brake fluid needs not flushing due to brake regeneration. Brake fluid absorbs moisture and lowers it boiling point over time. Most of us will not be able to tell the difference unless you are tracking the vehicle. Most companies that actually notice this issue will say every two years and use DOT 4. Which is the best unless you want DOT 5.1, but that is for track use.
BMW offers 5 years free servicing, so my last 3 series costed me $0 for the first 5 years. On the 6th year they tried to charge me $2500 so I just sold the car
um having to replace the battery with less than 50 000 miles is a pretty big deal. thats like having to replace your car engine of a brand new car. that right there would scare me away from an electric car.
Meanwhile my local VW service center quoted me $2500 to replace the timing belt and the battery which as per them 'would not take me back home 5 miles'. VW Jetta 2012 (108k miles) worth ~2k all in all (2 accidents)...Had it replaced for $800 2 years ago and still on that same battery which 'would not take me home'...
Can you check how much Tesla buys back this car after 110000 miles? One topic that no one pays attention on RUclips is the resale value of Tesla cars. Imagine you paid around $50000 for a brand new car and then after 5 years it's worth less than $10000. That would be embarrassing. Is that the case? Can you share the data as far as the resale value of the car after 110,000 miles on it?
Lifetime Cost of all cars vary according to brand and model.. But I tend to keep my cars 8 years on average.. even though I do have a 20yr old Jeep 170,000 miles too with its major cost only being an occasional parts, fuel and liquids. If you're good at your own maintenance then most older ICE cars you can do yourself and save a lot of money on that side of things yes fuel becomes the greatest expense then. And if you buy the typical 5 year 100,000 mile extended warranty in the purchase your only cost is basically gas and tires ( and brakes if you do a lot of mountain drives like here in California ) . Hondas and Toyotas are the cars to compare to the Model 3, not BMW or Mercedes that would be Model S and X plaid. For all electric cars the battery pack is the elephant in the room, it can cost as much to replace out of warranty as a small used ICE car that gets 40 miles to the gallon like the Honda fit. So Now do a comparison with Honda & Toyota ICE and Hybrid of 5 years ago. Then factor in the resale price around the 7 year mark. You might also think about Lease costs for electric car that may actually cost less? Then you are basically renting the battery and car.
No rust.... You should see the Teslas in Sweden and Norway as an example. The corrosion and the battery condition andelectronics. Oh my.... Water and salt, and it corrode and rust and ingress and damage all kinds of parts. Some very expensive. Not to mention the super bad design for air intake to the cabin. They still really have no idea of how to build a car that handles humid and wet climate.
I love your video, very insightful - would love same with a cold weather climate tesla of same age and miles. One note: you kept saying “costed” - unfortunately that’s not the proper use of the word. You simply say “cost”. This would make your video easier to watch as it was jarring to hear a non word being used 😅
Hi there ~ I need your help. I’ve been having issues with my Tesla Model 3. Windshield is fogging up different times of day. While driving or parked. I’ve got photos with time stamps and brought to Tesla. Was told it was normal. What am I doing wrong. Do you have any advice? Please help. Thank you 🙏🏽 your videos by the way are very informative. Kudos to you 🎉
Thank you! Not sure. Usually it’s related to weather. I’m thinking it could be your ac condensation so there’s water inside and when you turn on the air it causes moisture. Try 10 min before have outside air on and ac off and max the blower
The savings you've stored will disappear if your battery dies or if the full charge mileage significantly drops due to battery degradation. Additionally, the high repair costs lead to exorbitant insurance fees, that is why car rental companies are moving away from Tesla.
These are super cheap tesla service costs. In London UK, tesla quoted me £350 (400$)for wheel alignment And £250 (290$)for brake caliper service. Wheel rotation is £40 (50$) £60 (80$) filter replacement I dont dont how much aircon service to replace dessecant bag would cost so assume £150 (200$) So I would have to pay close to £800(950$) for my year 4 service. This is more than a 5 years servicing plan with honda costs.
Modern Civic, $59 Goodyear tires 65,000 mile warranty last 7 years. Oil change doing it yourself every 5k miles under $20. The regular 12v battery also lasts 7 years $130. Wiper blades $10. Insurance $25 a month 😂
You know i dont get whats the point of all those tesla reviews, all people that buy them obviously can afford to fix whatever the hell goes wrong with the car, to a normal person like us civics will save us tons of money 😂
Stop giving people good advice, will ya! 😂 I have a plug-in hybrid now and plan to go back to a simpler car for my next one. For exactly the reasons you describe.
Hey Chris, just bought a 2018 Model 3 performance with 95K miles for a steal. The third party dealership doesn't know how to delete the last owners account off the vehicle, and on the Tesla App, it tells me to enter VIN, rename the vehicle, submit the Buyers Order, and my ID, and it could take up to 5 days to process. I have a Teala Service Center here in Austin I can go to, do you think it would be quicker? Also, it still has a month of premium service left on it, and I'm pretty sure I smell that same smell you talked about in this video, except I bought it As-Is, with no warranty...
thats probably the actual range. they 'estimated' range was basically fudged by order of elon to make the range seem like more. plus lots of other things can effect that. lots of highway driving, gunning it all the time, temperature, are you using the ac/heat, ect ect.
@@jebes909090 yeah I figured out a way to fix it. Had to drop it down to 5% and then full charge at supercharged to 100% which calibrated and went back up to 263 miles
Thank you. After I sent the question, I finished the video and found the services were all from Tesla :). Yes not bad at all. I got a pre owned 2019 M3 and warranty just expired last June. Good to know.
You can get the base model model 3 for $28500 now, it about the same of the msrp of a hybrid Camry le. Although that's with the $7500 incentive, the model 3 is just overall a much better vehicle in terms of looks, performance, technology, and cost of ownership.
but its not better quality, and i wont have to upgrade the camry at 120k miles when the warranty ends. I could drive the awd hybrid camry another 5 year car note period and have very little maintenance in the grand scheme of things. much cheaper than buying two teslas.
degredation depends a lot on how you charge (aka fast charge), how often you might charge to 100% and do not drive afterwards and let the battery rest fully charged, how often you drive under full performance and how nice the conditions are aka how warm it is where you are driving avoding temperatures below 5 to 10°C) but that is the guideline only for NON LFP or LiFePo4 battery cars, the usual tesla 18650. But for over 2 years tesla is delivering model 3 from shanghai into the EU instead of american built ones (which were terrible built compared to the chinese one cause we got both) which meant also LFP chemistry. It looks like you have cared a lot about the battery health cause 10% degredation is small. Degredation means - what too many miss - that you compare the range driven on the same day / week / month of the year to avoid deviations cause by seasonal effects. At the end you will need similiar conditions and same drive habits but too many people ignore the temperature or the wind (direction, speed) or even rain and complain first.
So you take a five year old Tesla, and it has service problems. These current problems and errors are equivalent of the ICE 'Service Engine Soon' light. No telling what it will cost to fix the coolant issue. So about $1,000 a year, for maintenance to own one, and he has a current issue that hasn't been fixed yet.
very informative video n honestly that maintenance cost is cheap asf. especially considering in oregon they charge 100 per hour just for labor but getting maintenance thru tesla parts n labor for barely 150 for general stuff cheap asf

That thing better be hidden deep inside the dash and require some serious disassembly. 😅
I dont think having to use your warranty a dozen times bodes well for the next 100k miles
Average i'd say like $2000 / year on insurance so $10,000 in 5 years. So all the money he saved better not spend it for when the battery dies
Can you explain the warranty thing?
@19:15 what I want to know, is if that $13k is due upfront or if they can set up a payment plan for customers
Any chance you know anyone that got a new battery out of warranty that could give you some insight in that?
I’ll keep an eye out for
@@EverydayChris thanks Chris! Really appreciate that. I tried looking all over online but couldn’t find anything
I believe the 2018 EPA range was 310 miles, not 325.
Yeah, he did say that, and he also said that the increase to 325 was through a software update that made the electric motors more efficient.
$98 for tire rotation is criminal. Plus all those things messing up within 2 yrs 😮
Such a great video, beautifully laid out and explained. Please do one on a gen-one Tesla such as a model X!
Thank you!
Wow! Really interesting video, Chris! Thx and greetings from Munich, Germany 😎
halo!
Thanks!
I lost my message ... was asking for any short bits of additional information you might have on updates ... the release notes don't seem to cover everything.
Woohoo!! Thanks for the support!
Which update you talking about?? The latest one??
@@EverydayChris the latest one and other current ones if there's more to them than the release notes show. Just a suggestion.
@avwill yeah a lot of changes! Will do!
I’ve been enjoying your videos, Christopher.
Roughly $105/month in California electricity is crazy good considering it’s probably $350+ of equal fuel related costs per month with avg fuel cost there. Thanks for the break down!
Total cost of ownership isn't complete without the depreciation. How would it compare then?
Who's READY?! I was SUPER shocked to see this daily driver of over 111,000 miles and the condition it was in..
hey Chris. It was nice meeting you at Vidsummit. This is some epic quality video
Good meeting you! Haha thanks gonna be even better soon. Got some crazy things
So for me it seems the cost of replacing the battery pack if something goes wrong is my only real concern
Me too I heard it 10k for a new battery
It's very unlikely to go bad, but it's still a concern due to the high cost. I guess kind of a trade off between less maintenance but with small chance of battery going bad.
imagine buying a car with such bad QC you pay another guy to make a check list of things that could be wrong with it when you get it oof
This is how buying a car in the communist states was.. they had zero qc so you had to take it to a mechanic right after you bought it to make sure it actually works
@@theairaccumulator7144that's best practice when buying a used car regardless of economic system
Awesome video! Do you have the new video on the coolant issue?
Nothing crazy. He went to service and they filled it!
@EverydayChris oh wow that's awesome! Do you mind sharing how much he had to pay for that?
Tesla has road service for most repairs, but it's best to contact Tesla and give them your specifics.
Ya service can be issue like he said in the video also a rear end took month+ to fix so defiantly gonna need a beater car that month+ for some bumper damage is very long time
Thank you Chris, that was a lot of good real world information. Just what we need.
at this mileage, how much will it cost to replace a bad battery? (Model 3 or Y) Thanks!
@@soils1111 A maintenance agreement is another term for a service contract.
Imagine paying 150$ for someone to spend 2 minutes changing your 10$ cabin filter.
The car will brick if the owner does it himself 😂. JK but i wouldnt doubt it
The tesla manual has a DIY for that filter change.
@@GentleBrawl All cars have a manuel for the cabin filter.
What about insurance cost? Aren’t Teslas more expensive to insure compared to other vehicles?
It’s in there. I also have a separate video
6:39min- sounds like the PPF could have saved his reared. 😅
For those that can get a model 3 from 2018 with 50-70k miles it does seem like a smart purchase for cost optimization given the expected life of 150-200k of the battery at 80%
I love watching your Tesla videos
I love that you love watching my Tesla videos!
Does anyone know if you can buy an extended warranty for the battery from a 3rd party?
Can you get a boombox installed in a 2018 model?
the battery literally didnt last the warranty period. these are def throw away items.
Tough luck if your battery dies just after warranty is up.
Is it something like 10k to replace it?
more like 15k
Who pays for tire rotation?
After 50,000 miles on my 2018 Tesla model 3, I had the third break light replaced, antifreeze refilled and seat sensor driver side replaced added to $1,000.
Chris You live in California. Tesla's are not everywhere for instance in St Louis, Also the radiators get debris between them and this stops the air flow. They should be cleaned every 60K
Good tip! You should get those radiator guards
would u pay around 20k to replace battery? i want to see the video process!
Awesome video thanks for making this!!🙌
Glad you liked it!
Really appreciating my 9 cent per kWh here in South Alabama. So about $4,060 dollars less than in expensive Kalifornistan.
Yeah, but you guys burn baby seals for electricity down there 😂. Coal… you burn coal 😊
I’m just jealous of your cheap electricity.
I’ll take SoCal weather though. Just love our harsh winters 😂
Well done for knowing the difference between kW and kWh. More get it wrong than right on youtube.
2019 model 3 for under 18 thousand with 100 thousand miles worth it?
Tesla’s are the cat’s Meow in EVs - made the switch and could never be more satisfied 👍
This should’ve a Tesla commercial !
What about the cost to install the charger at home?
if you do it yourself, the cost would be around $ 1000 all in ...in canadian pesos that is.
Thank you for best Tesla content
Thank you!
holy shit 25cents USD/kwh.
here in SG (singapore), it's around 60 cents (SGD) /kwh (about 0.44 USD /kwh)
wow everything even electricity is expensive in SG
Do you guys service your cars in Tesla service centers?
Do they need special tires, so expensive, my ICE tire $70 each ?!
it helps but not needed
Woww! What size and make tires?
BMW offers 5 years free servicing, so my last 3 series costed me $0 for the first 5 years. On the 6th year they tried to charge me $2500 so I just sold the car
not bad
Tesla is not far away from BMW quoting close £800 (950$) for year 4 service 😢
um having to replace the battery with less than 50 000 miles is a pretty big deal. thats like having to replace your car engine of a brand new car. that right there would scare me away from an electric car.
You are mistaken. It’s a 12v battery not the main source of power for the vehicle. A £200 fix max.
@@theinvisibleman2070 yeah no, how about a 5 year old toyota rav 4?
Great video.. In the Atlanta area, 4.5 cents a KWH off peak. Damn I'm glad I'm here. California Yikes
This would make your video easier to watch as it was jarring to hear a non word being used 😅
Definitely need to bump this comment up as it hurt my ears each time he said “costed”. Very informative video though!
@@EverydayChris I live in Los Angeles CA and it’s hot here.
Try leaving a desiccant in there for a few days to suck moisture out of your car. Just make sure if you have kids or pets that they don't eat it

What if you compare with Toyota Prius or Camry or accord ? Lol
compare about what? driving characteristic and all the on-board entertainment system, sentry mode etc aren't available in other cars.
The savings you've stored will disappear if your battery dies or if the full charge mileage significantly drops due to battery degradation. Additionally, the high repair costs lead to exorbitant insurance fees, that is why car rental companies are moving away from Tesla.
Make it so that owners can repair a bunch of features outside of the high voltage battery
Agree. Owner could have cut a ton of costs by doing things himself. But again time is money
These are super cheap tesla service costs.
In London UK, tesla quoted me £350 (400$)for wheel alignment
And £250 (290$)for brake caliper service.
Wheel rotation is £40 (50$)
£60 (80$) filter replacement
I dont dont how much aircon service to replace dessecant bag would cost so assume £150 (200$)
So I would have to pay close to £800(950$) for my year 4 service.
This is more than a 5 years servicing plan with honda costs.
Thanks for this. Can't imagine why someone would consider a Electric Ford. after 100 years they still can't make a reliable gas car.
the $100 for tire rotation is what boggles mt mind. its $10 at firestone and $20 most other places.
I have a plug-in hybrid now and plan to go back to a simpler car for my next one. For exactly the reasons you describe.
The best part of all, it's a Civic you park it and forget it, no babying here.
You forgot battery replacement cost 13000÷2=6500$ in cost.
I dont think so. WIth those stuff the fastest is to have the previous owner transfer it to you through the app. It takes like a second
@user-gt7xz8lh4d Awesome, the A95L still has superior color, but the G4 gets a little brighter in highlight detail, and better shadow detail in DV…

My 2023 model 3 RWD base model is only going up to 255 max lol Should I contact tesla? 10k miles
thats probably the actual range. they 'estimated' range was basically fudged by order of elon to make the range seem like more. plus lots of other things can effect that. lots of highway driving, gunning it all the time, temperature, are you using the ac/heat, ect ect.
@@jebes909090 yeah I figured out a way to fix it. Had to drop it down to 5% and then full charge at supercharged to 100% which calibrated and went back up to 263 miles

You can get the base model model 3 for $28500 now, it about the same of the msrp of a hybrid Camry le. Although that's with the $7500 incentive, the model 3 is just overall a much better vehicle in terms of looks, performance, technology, and cost of ownership.
until it randomly erupts into flames you mean
but its not better quality, and i wont have to upgrade the camry at 120k miles when the warranty ends.
At the end you will need similiar conditions and same drive habits but too many people ignore the temperature or the wind (direction, speed) or even rain and complain first.
also the type of battery in it and if you got a dud or not
A good and informative video, great job breaking the cost of everything! Well done!
Thanks Scott!
Rather do oil changes than worry about bricked battery after warranty expires…
Do all your oil changes on time and a toyota will last 300,000+ miles
