The 2024 Tesla Model 3 Long Range Dual Motor AWD ($47,740 USD starting, $66,003 CAD starting) and a very well loved 2018 Tesla Model 3 (~$20,000 USD) are facing off for our very first episode of new vs old with an electric vehicle. The new Model 3 has been heavily refreshed this year, and has seen some pretty serious new upgrades and changes. These include a much quieter cabin, a new exterior design, ventilated seats, ambient lighting, better speakers and more. But are all of these changes worth the hefty price jump over a used one? Thomas and James are excited to see how far the Model 3 has come, and just how much car you can get for the price on the used market. We hope you enjoy the episode. And then subscribe, silly.

I'm outta the loop. Whats the reference?
Can't believe my standards have dropped this low, but the older version is better for the simple fact it has stalks (and radar)
radar is deactivated… but is has still USS
they're both junk

I hope the helmet I8 scene never leaves the intros.
Haha I noticed the new intro while watching and was hoping they hadn’t removed it. So glad they didn’t and hope they don’t too.
Until that old one needs a new battery. I'm all about saving money though.
Gets me every time. That noise.
For reference flop refers to how drastic the color change is when light is directly shining on a painted surface vs when it is just illuminated by ambient light. Think Pearlescent paint. Soul Red Crystal looks so good because it gets really dark when light is not shining directly at it, meaning it emphasizes the design more.
Source: automotive design grad student
Mazda also makes a really nice Pearlescent white for the Miata, the only white I would ever want.
Flop is derived from the use of the term “flip-flop”, which is often used to describe a paint finish which changes hue notably as the angle of observation changes, “flipping” from one hue to another. Calling it “flipping” paint just would not do. So the colloquialism “flip-flop” entered our lexicon, no longer just foot wear, but now, obviously derived from that ubiquitous term for an ultra informal shoe, but a follow-through to round out the a term for paint which “flips” color. A flip-flop paint job is one that can appear perhaps black in certain lighting, then raven blue in others. If the industry used the term “flop” for perceived changes of hue depending upon the angle of observation PRIOR, to the custom paint world coining this term, I will stand corrected and beg forgiveness for steering anyone wrong. But in the automotive finishing world, flop is indeed the alteration of the perceived color by way of viewpoint, and is generally a derisive term, and is an attribute of inferior paint or paint application. Not generally desired. The question of whether paint flop is desired or not, can quickly be derived by the uniformity of its effect. A finish showing this “flop” only in certain areas is evidence of poor mixing, whether color mix or reducer or even hardener, poor distribution of pigmented solids in the basecoat itself, or improper application, often via irregular air pressure, or simply, being drunk on the job. Beer goggles doesn’t only apply to late night selection of prospective mating partners. With beer goggles, even poor trim work, carpentry, or painting can look first rate, till morning comes. The light only lies a little bit.

Rented a Model Y and Model 3 from Hertz after getting into a car accident. The condition of the vehicles were unlike anything I’ve ever seen from a rental agency. They both felt like vehicles with over 150k miles. Outside of the speed, there weren’t any redeeming qualities. I was left feeling like they’re way overpriced.

I own a 2019 model 3 I’m not sure if I just got lucky but I love build quality of the car nothings fallen apart (yet lol) there’s no misaligned panel gaps or paint issues, no squeaking or creaking. There is a lot of wind noise at high speeds but it doesn’t really bother me the speakers are great at drowning it out. If anyone is interested in buying a used model 3 just make sure the seller took care of it and didn’t just treat it like a piece of junk because mine held up well for a lower-end ev. It’s also wicked fast not too many cars in traffic can catch up I love driving it.

I have an identical 2018 M3LR (even in blue!) Owned for 5.5 years and 40K miles on it and it is still pretty much new. I don't know how that one is so beat up! A few weeks ago I test drove the 2024 LR. It was nice. I loved the quiet cabin and the quality of the stereo was better but there is something wrong with the spatial imaging of the speakers IMO. I don't feel surrounded by the sound as much somehow. I don't get a wide sound even messing with all the settings. If I'm comparing the stock suspensions between both the 2024 is MUCH better. However, I upgraded to adjustable comfort coilovers in my 2018 and the ride is very close with the 2024 a little bit more comfortable. In the end, my 2018 is just about paid off and it's still a great car so I've decided to keep rolling with it. Maybe the federal tax credit will come back someday and I'll consider it again but for now I'm keeping my 2018.

I had one of the first 3P which came to Norway, from 2019 to 2023, it was my second EV after having an X from 2017-2018. Then swapped to the 2023 YP.
I must say that a lot has happened to the Teslas from 2017>2023, but it should also be said that the 3P I sold had 85.000 Km and it was still looking good and working as it should. I had some initial issues that were taken care of. The Model Y has been just two small issues with, which mobile service has fixed when the car was parked outside my house.
I got a berlin YP :-) I was luckilly not one of the first few ones with heat pump issues.. Now about 26.000 Km into the YP, it looks still good in paint, interior etc.
The YP on 21" is actually more comfortable than the 2019 was on 19", I did also run the 2019 3P on 20", but got custom made forged wheels. Ended up doing KW V3 coilovers on the 2019 3P as the OEM shocks where too "bumpy".

Just bought a 2018 Model 3 performance for $29k with FSD. I’m absolutely loving it for the price. Something to be said about such a value. Mine luckily was private owner and in great shape for 50k miles
And what’s the plan in 3 years when you have to consider a new battery? I’m actually pro EV but used seems like a difficult proposition
@@jissanhuq3792 if the battery does happen to fail post-warranty then I would buy a new battery? Battery cost has reduced drastically in the last few years. Where previously (early twenty-teens) they were $20kish. Now they seem to be $10-15k from Tesla. Not bad considering that I’m not in this car for more than $30k. It would still be a total investment of less than a new model 3 performance. Warranty is 8 years 120k miles
This warranty also covers if the battery degrades below 70% of original capacity. We are seeing I believe degradation of around 1-2% every year though
@@TheAventadorSV it’s certainly not a rip off for me. Considering I wanted this specific trim. I was cross shopping with a Miata at the same price point and this made more sense for my long commute. But to each their own
@@jissanhuq3792 who says the battery needs to be replaced in 3 years?
The reason the early Model 3s (pre-mid cycle refresh) are depreciating steeply like the one rented here is because there was some nice updates around 2020-2021. The updated Model 3 got a new center console, updated front interior door design, a heat pump, double pane glass in the front, and in 2022 switched to an AMD Ryzen processor and a 16v Lithium Ion LV system.
The early model 3s are easy to spot because they have the chrome trim, and the interior has the old glossy center console and the dash trim doesn't extend into the front doors.
No, the reason is the price cuts that Elon decided was necessary to drive more demand at the cost of profit margins. Also the price cuts began about 4 months before he bought Twitter. He was collecting money. Also fired a bunch of employees right before their stocks vested, right before he bought twitter. Think about it
This is utterly ignorant reasoning. Elon Musk has truly played you all for fools. - Ex Tesla Sales.
That or they're cheaply made all round then fall apart with your only option $185/hr tesla service on a, well, throw away car. -(4 teslas, never again)
The 2020/2021 models are following the same depreciation curve. People don’t care about how many panes of glass it has; they care about how well built and reliable it is
A 7 year old with 50k miles is basically brand new for something like a Toyota. Meanwhile Tesla has parts falling off and it’s lost an entire third of its total driving range
@Courtesyflush52 Hey now! My pampered tesla S had its seats ripping out at 25k! Be more accurate bud! Hahahaha. Maybe they hold up to ladies yoga pants. All i know is denim and pleather don't work.
Throttle House, You're the best! I subscribed because I love your content!
I own a '22 M3 Dual motor/LR and drove the highland M3 Dual Motor/LR a few weeks ago. Surprisingly I got used to the stalkless design within a few minutes. The interior is sooooo much quieter which I loved, but I didn't care for the softer suspension. I like the go-cart feel of my '22. I also didn't care for the interior aesthetic compared to my '22. I too like the faux wood. If I didn't own a M3 already I would have no problem buying this and I'm sure I would love it as much as I love mine. The depreciation is real now. I paid $57K about two years ago and it's worth around $30K with 30K miles.
Not all of us Americans live in Los Angeles. @8:11
In dense cities in northeastern United States and also Chicago, we need our turn signal stalk easily accessible as well.
Heck, I feel the same way in rural, population-13k MN. Fumbling for an indicator just sounds not fun.
On the other hand I live in Europe and I don't really understand the problem with roundabouts, they are that tight so you either don't have to move your hand or you move it slightly in controlled manner so it's not like you forget when the steering wheel and it's buttons are.
Still worse for normal cars but not that bad
A turn signal stalk remains in the same place. Heck, even the old 1960's thing where the turn signals were a switch on the dash meant they _remained in the same place._ You know where they are. You know where they are going to be.
Putting the turn signals on the wheel means they're going to move around and never be quite in the same place all of the time, every time.

I've also got a 2018 with 50K miles on it, but mine isn't nearly as beat up as that one. My seats are still supportive. My trim isn't falling off. My 2020 M3P has 78k miles from new and nothing is falling apart. I’ve had no problems aside from the control arms which Tesla took care of. It’s about how you take care of the car. I have a 981S with 22k miles which honestly shows more wear in some places.
It was worth it just for the Carson head nod.
1:23 I like that vandalized "MILES"
I actually just made this same decision recently.
I purchased a 2018 long range, but with over 100k miles, and the condition isn’t remotely close to this.
Only issue was driver window alignment which is a free fix, and fog light housing out but I replaced both with led for $90.
There is plenty of model 3s near me for 15k-19k and in my experience are nothing like the rental car you’re testing.
Wow. Thank you for the honesty about the SERIOUSLY bad quality/durability issues.
Yikes. My 2018 has 180,000 kms and has none of those issues. Still feels new.
It’s a rental car, those get abused on average and I’m sure on this it’s worse, likely poor charging, aggressive only driving
At the price for the new Tesla 3 as they say like 54K ? that would make one wait a bit longer for Rivian R2 that just launched and is ready for orders will be available on Europe as well or if that is too much off-roady for citizens, the Hyundai ioniq 5N that is a much proper hatch with some cool tricks up in it's sleeves..

One thing to consider is consumers like myself. I’m driving a 10 year old car that I bought for $11k new. It’s small, weak, loud, and almost entirely bereft of anything that could be considered a ‘feature.’ I imagine even a 50k mile rental base model 3 would still feel like a rocket ship compared to what I drive. Of course, it’s a scale of quality and affordability, but I don’t exactly need a 2024 to get a massive upgrade from what I’m currently driving
The fact that the Escalade with an ICE is STILL quieter than Tesla's newest Model 3 is pretty outstanding, actually.
traveling speeds, there really is absolutely no engine sound whatsoever in any basic car. no clue why ppl think there is, the cabin noise is not coming from the engine as much as from tires and poor insulation
They’re referring to cabin noise. Cabin noise is mostly brought on by the tires, suspension, wind, and vibration of the frame, not the engine.
Liner Ritchie. Brilliant.
the new starting sequence 🤩🤩🤩
THIS!! IS!! THROTTLE HOUSE!!! 😂🤣😂🤣
And the sequel: THIS IS THROTTLE CLUB HOUSE
Very entertaining…as always. Still thankful for our EV6 and Bolt.
I have a Bolt too (in Europe under different brand) but I'm keeping an eye on the Model 3 depreciation. Perhaps I will make a switch. The Model 3 is more efficiënt and thus more range, obviously way faster charging. And the Bolt struggles to get the power down.
But yeah, the Bolt is made by a regular car company and ours is 6 years old and I haven't seen issues in our car with fit and finish or things falling apart. That and the new battery means the Bolt should be good for 10 years from now.
Entertaining and actually useful review. Conclusion is clear, the new model 3 maintains leadership in its class and the previous generation is now an attractive used alternative for those that have less budget to spend on a new vehicle.
So happy I opted out of my 2017 build model 3 suspension recall. Feels like my 2011 miata + what, 2000lbs 🫠
Mad Matts...Liner Richie.... Excellent!
I have a 2018 rwd long range sinilar to the one in the video. It was shipped across the Pacific to hawaii and back and was weighed for the ship. The total weight ready to drive with the included charger was 3549 lbs. After replacing the very bad made in mexico stock shocks with a set of koni fsd dampers the car has a hilarious ability to carry speed on a bumpy back road. The rwd model 3 being rather light up front has a suprisingly nice rear weight bias feel. I have no issues keeping up with my freind in an e46 m3. I myself also own an e46 vert and I also feel like I cant drive as fast in that car as the model 3 with proper shocks. No longer nerfed by trash dampers the car gains this complaince finally able to breathe and flow with the road. The whole set is not expensice and highly recommended for all older model 3s. Really changes the way the chassis feels.
Had many BMW's and now stuck with the 2018 Dual Motor. I actually prefer the Model 3 but do find the rear seems the area that needs addressing. The front has instant turn in, good grip, and then the rear seems like a firetruck where it's waiting to see what the front is doing. My gut says rear springs are too soft as it's unsettled at high speed. Is that what you have found?
Always making good videos 😊😊
