      Rented a Model Y and Model 3 from Hertz after getting into a car accident. The condition of the vehicles were unlike anything I’ve ever seen from a rental agency. They both felt like vehicles with over 150k miles. Outside of the speed, there weren’t any redeeming qualities. I was left feeling like they’re way overpriced.

    For reference flop refers to how drastic the color change is when light is directly shining on a painted surface vs when it is just illuminated by ambient light. Think Pearlescent paint. Soul Red Crystal looks so good because it gets really dark when light is not shining directly at it, meaning it emphasizes the design more.

      Flop is derived from the use of the term “flip-flop”, which is often used to describe a paint finish which changes hue notably as the angle of observation changes, “flipping” from one hue to another. Calling it “flipping” paint just would not do. So the colloquialism “flip-flop” entered our lexicon, no longer just foot wear, but now, obviously derived from that ubiquitous term for an ultra informal shoe, but a follow-through to round out the a term for paint which “flips” color. A flip-flop paint job is one that can appear perhaps black in certain lighting, then raven blue in others. If the industry used the term “flop” for perceived changes of hue depending upon the angle of observation PRIOR, to the custom paint world coining this term, I will stand corrected and beg forgiveness for steering anyone wrong. But in the automotive finishing world, flop is indeed the alteration of the perceived color by way of viewpoint, and is generally a derisive term, and is an attribute of inferior paint or paint application. Not generally desired. The question of whether paint flop is desired or not, can quickly be derived by the uniformity of its effect. A finish showing this “flop” only in certain areas is evidence of poor mixing, whether color mix or reducer or even hardener, poor distribution of pigmented solids in the basecoat itself, or improper application, often via irregular air pressure, or simply, being drunk on the job. Beer goggles doesn’t only apply to late night selection of prospective mating partners. With beer goggles, even poor trim work, carpentry, or painting can look first rate, till morning comes. The light only lies a little bit.

    I own a 2019 model 3 I’m not sure if I just got lucky but I love build quality of the car nothings fallen apart (yet lol) there’s no misaligned panel gaps or paint issues, no squeaking or creaking. There is a lot of wind noise at high speeds but it doesn’t really bother me the speakers are great at drowning it out. If anyone is interested in buying a used model 3 just make sure the seller took care of it and didn’t just treat it like a piece of junk because mine held up well for a lower-end ev. It’s also wicked fast not too many cars in traffic can catch up I love driving it.

    One thing to consider is consumers like myself. I’m driving a 10 year old car that I bought for $11k new. It’s small, weak, loud, and almost entirely bereft of anything that could be considered a ‘feature.’ I imagine even a 50k mile rental base model 3 would still feel like a rocket ship compared to what I drive. Of course, it’s a scale of quality and affordability, but I don’t exactly need a 2024 to get a massive upgrade from what I’m currently driving

    I have been driving my new model 3 for 3 months and these guys haven’t touched upon soooo many positives and negatives I live with everyday in this car. They clearly don’t own one. You have to drive it for a while to really understand if it is true value. Overall, I am glad I bought it and it is my first ever Tesla. I have driven previous models and immediately can tell the difference - the new 3 is a luxury car. This car goes fast - Porsche fast. It cleans so easily - wet microfiber and dry microfiber to wipe dry. Gets dirty easily - cleans easily. The turn stalk gone sucks at first but now i don’t notice it. I drive 4-7 hours for business and this is a comfortable ride. Sound system is not so good - it’s ok but it’s no Harmon Kardon. Carpeting is cheap. Settle touches like how the door opens - wrap around lights, seat warmer and cooler are great. Cruise control is dangerous - when a large semi passes, especially on an arching corner - the car brakes and scares the shit out of you! I’m not kidding. I called Tesla and they listened I think - after my last computer update the issue improved but not 100%. I fear the unpredictability of the car at times but I also feared the 1968 Chevy Malibu from my past - especially in wet weather. Some times the wipers go on for no reason. I love how it locks when I walk away and my phone is notified when it’s almost charges. I wish more apps on the screen pertained to me but I love of fast you can take a corner - nice wide wheels. I don’t like how condensation still manages to get in even when you put the car in car wash mode but I really like how the navigation system is so detailed and user friendly. No car seems to be perfect - I have found the same disappointments in cars 3 times the price but you live with them. This is unlike like any car I have ever known - is it a sports car or a luxury sports sedan? Yes and yes, but it’s electric and is computer controlled, so no. Either way I am enjoying the experience and look forward to what the EV market will offer in a couple years from now.

    I have an identical 2018 M3LR (even in blue!) Owned for 5.5 years and 40K miles on it and it is still pretty much new. I don't know how that one is so beat up! A few weeks ago I test drove the 2024 LR. It was nice. I loved the quiet cabin and the quality of the stereo was better but there is something wrong with the spatial imaging of the speakers IMO. I don't feel surrounded by the sound as much somehow. I don't get a wide sound even messing with all the settings. If I'm comparing the stock suspensions between both the 2024 is MUCH better. However, I upgraded to adjustable comfort coilovers in my 2018 and the ride is very close with the 2024 a little bit more comfortable. In the end, my 2018 is just about paid off and it's still a great car so I've decided to keep rolling with it. Maybe the federal tax credit will come back someday and I'll consider it again but for now I'm keeping my 2018.

You can take the extra $30k and have the interior redone, maybe a new paint job or wrap, that would fix the complaints between the new and old one. The total weight ready to drive with the included charger was 3549 lbs. After replacing the very bad made in mexico stock shocks with a set of koni fsd dampers the car has a hilarious ability to carry speed on a bumpy back road. The rwd model 3 being rather light up front has a suprisingly nice rear weight bias feel. I have no issues keeping up with my freind in an e46 m3. I myself also own an e46 vert and I also feel like I cant drive as fast in that car as the model 3 with proper shocks. No longer nerfed by trash dampers the car gains this complaince finally able to breathe and flow with the road. The whole set is not expensice and highly recommended for all older model 3s. Really changes the way the chassis feels.

    I think a more fair comparison is a new 2023 Model 3 and a 2024 model 3. I bought the 2023 model 3 for about 28k (After tax credits). I like its look much more. If you show the design of the two cars to someone who has never seen a model 3 before, they would probably pick the 2023 model. People are just used to seeing the old one around and think the new one is cooler. The lights on the new one are really good on their own, doesn't really go well with the car though. Kinda reminds me of ionic 6. The old one is more reminiscent of the Porsche aesthetic. The back lights look like the older lobster lights of Honda civic. The accent lights are a gimmick. Maybe teenagers will like them. The wood interior is far superior than what is on there now. And loosing the stalks was the last straw. The only pro I see is the quieter ride. To me thats not worth an additional 25k. I am in love with my 2023 model.

    • @IceW4ve
      @IceW4ve 8 месяцев назад +1

      The new one has: a (much) quieter ride, more comfortable frequency adaptive suspension, crisper hardware 4 cameras, an extremely improved sound system, far better Wifi and Bluetooth connectivity (phone unlock is much more reliably than in older models), much sexier looking rear end, adaptive matrix LED headlights activated now in Europe, overall very much noticeable build quality improvements in the interieur (thank god got rid of that wood trim!), ventilated perforated seats (very very nice in hot summer days), new version of upper control arms so they don't start to queak after 40k miles

    • @HarikrishnanGNair
      @HarikrishnanGNair 6 месяцев назад

      I don’t know what you are talking about. My car is quiet enough, don’t need it to be any quieter. My phone unlock is super reliable, never had it not work for me. My sound system is AMAZING, better than any of the fancy cars I have driven as well. Maybe the new one is slightly better, but who cares. I disagree the rear end is sexier. It’s flat out boring and ugly. Maybe some people like the tesla being spelled out. I hate it. I have not had any build quality issues so far. Maybe that will change in the future. I’ll give you ventilated seats. But if given the choice id still probably choose the leather seats because they look better. California weather is not so bad that I would need ventilated seats. But yeah it’s helpful to have it. But once again, no way are the upgrades even close to justifying paying an additional 25k. I am very very happy with my purchase. But hey maybe they make sense for you, so you do you. :-)

    I just bought a 2022 Model 3, Standard Range RWD for $18,900 after the $4000.00 federal rebate. It has 77,000 miles on it, and it is immaculate. It looks almost brand new. It had one owner and hasn't had any accidents. Even the wheels are in good shape and are not scratched.
    The battery is in great shape, and it has only lost 3%-5% range. Recurrent states it has retained 253 miles of its original 272 mile range
    In real money (actual cost), it's $26,000 cheaper than the 2024 Model 3 Standard Range. To me, buying the 2022 was a no brainer - its not even close.

    You guys briefly mentioned it, but I think a really useful piece of info would have been directly comparing the batteries, to really show the difference between the two, taking into account tech changes and battery degradation, etc

    I upgraded from my 2020 Model 3, which had about 79,000 miles, to a 2023 Model 3. It was white with a white interior, just like when I first got it. The interior and exterior didn't wear out. It all depends on how you use and maintain them-they're excellent cars.

    As the owner of a 2020 M3, I haven't found the build quality to be an issue at all. I actually find it to be well above average.

    I drove a new M3 as my first EV. It took me all of 5 minutes to get used to and like no stalks for turn signals or anything else. Not spending that much, but it was a fun ride.

      You’re right, also took only a few minutes to get used to it. I’d still prefer stocks for now tho. In other news have you tried demo’ing any other teslas ?

    Oh yay, another electric car. Thomas and James are the only reason I clicked. My 09 Vibe GT at 210k is leaps better build quality than that 1st gen model 3.

    Saw a clip if someone trying to do a 5 point turn with the on screen gear selector and it just looked stupid, so so stupid. When Ferrari put the indicators on the steering wheel people hated it.
    Also my 2011 115k ford fiesta has better build quality that that 2nd hand model 3...

    9:23 I listened to it 5 times. I didn't hear any "creaking". Physical objects that move do make sound, that isn't the same as "creaking".
