Today, we take an in-depth look at what it's actually like to buy and own an incredibly cheap Tesla Model S. My friend Rex bought a 2016 Model S 90D with low miles, and it seems like a great deal, but we visit the electrified garage for a checkup and we find some interesting discoveries.

I've always wanted a Hillbilly Edition Tesla
There needs to be a whole bunch of Electrified Garages to service these out-of-warranty Tesla cars. Saving a battery pack is a game changer, plus all the recommended maintenance is good information. The garage certainly knows what the weak points are and what to check.
Not happening. Fantasy. People aren’t going to plop down $20k plus on an old car. They will use the $20k to buy new or barely used. Few have cash to burn like that. Besides, it’s just dumb anyway. You wouldn’t do it. Admit it.
@@mikemccormick8115 the problem is, when you go to trade it in, the dealer offers you $15,000 for a car you owe $28,000 on. Then what? That’s where we get back to my “sell it for scrap” theory.
@@videditorEB1 Well I think people who borrow money on things they cant pay cash for, especially a car, are crazy anyway. People live way beyond their means and it’s insane. Just making banks rich. Most have no business having personal transportation costing as much or more than they make in an entire year. So people are their own worst enemy making foolish financial decisions.

@@mikemccormick8115I bought a mazda for around 11k, after a few months had to redo all the breaks and fan belt cost over 2k in repairs. 6months down the line I got the engine light on, took it for repair was quoted over 6k. It's not just electric cars that have expensive repairs. If these guys can fix out of warranty batteries for a fraction of the cost then glory to them.
That title though. You could've said " 17k Tesla deal" or "Best Tesla Deal Ever" but I get it...
The ugly truth is that most people bash on second hand Teslas and they think they are junk while in reality we see here that it's actually a very good car for the money. Some cheap fixes needed only. Even if it brings the price to 25k it's still a very good deal.

@@haggbart statistics say nothing of the sort. There has been a massive investigation because FSD is only used in the safest conditions whereas the statistics for human drivers include snowstorms, heavy raid, fog, all the conditions the tesla manual basically says not to use it in. The reality it’s it’s not as safe as humans including distracted drunk teens.
Teslas are crap cars
17k for a facelifted Model S with AP 2.0 hardware is amazing deal! I has 2015 with AP1 hardware for 40K in 2018 with Certified Pre-owned warranty from Tesla, but I didn't have newest AP hardware or newer processor. It was fun to drive and had free supercharging, but only 220 miles of range if I was lucky. Took it all around the state and country for free and sold it two years later to dealership for the same price as I bought it for because they didn't check Autocheck where it showed minor accident before I bought it! 🤷🏽♂️
Sold it because it was fun for a while but then it actually got boring to drive. Plus I didn't feel like paying Tesla tax for parts and when a door handle is $1000 to replace, you know there was about to be some pricey repairs once it was out of warranty
I had a '14 S85 and exchanged it for a '18 Model 3 dual motor (with acceleration boost). the 3 is faster but I miss the comfort of the S.
Main reason I sold the S is because of it's motor configuration it wouldn't 1-pedal drive which is something I really wanted. Sold that S 2 years ago for $35k which is what I paid for it. Don't ask what the used 3 cost :(

@@michaelhoolahan5717Yup. I have no interest in a ev, as I work on my own cars man. It’s cheap to get a half million miles out of a car if you do all your own maintenance, and repairs. Everything on a Tesla is proprietary, and expensive to fix.
@@michaelhoolahan5717 Yes, I saw the video. Tavarish is a great guy. He loves what he does and is very knowledgable. But no matter what, EVs are junk. All of them. Even Tavarish can't make me say anythng good about EVs. They serve no purpose at all. And don't get me started about their greenness. There is nothing green in mining the stuff for the batteries, the production on the electricity to charge these useless piles of cow dung and so on. These are pure throw away cars pushed by a political agenda by people who have no clue how a car works.
I love seeing Freddie in the U.K. with Mat Armstrong. They are both nice people and Freddie has been embraced by Mat’s family. There’s still a lot of love out there guys. 🙏❤️
Paying $20k for a new battery at Telsa is akin to taking your 10 year old Mustang back to the Ford dealer to install a factory crate motor. Doesn't happen.
If you lay aside all the bullshit about having the 'latest & greatest' it can make a lot of sense on a well built & maintained car.
But even putting in a new motor in an old Mustang would make more sense than putting a new battery costing $20k plus in an old Tesla. Youre right, doesn’t happen.
Crate motor would boost performance from stock, but a fresh battery Tesla would still have worn motors and whatnot. Obviously, an old Mustang still has issues (believe me I own one) so either way you're spending another used car's worth of money on a used car.

The problem is that most owners swear it does while Tesla themselves say you need to pay attention. Naming it FSD was the dumbest idea from Tesla.
Yup, autopilot is not FSD. Autopilot is just lane keeping with cruse control. Some people don't know the difference.

My 2013 model S has 177,000 miles on the original battery. All my doorhandles have been replaced. They only cost $300 apiece now. I’m still on the original brake pads with 40% pad life left. Don’t let people who never own Teslas tell you different. They are very reliable and cheap to own.
How much battery degradation has happened during that time?

You’re about to get a £14k bill for a battery repair, I would sell it quick while you still can.
I was curious so I got onto autotempest and looked up prices, nationwide, on a 2016 90D with a maximum 55,000 mi. The lowest price I found was $25,500. So yeah he got a GREAT deal
From a dealer, for people who qualify, if you can get them to sell it for $25k or less, there is a tax rebate they can apply at time of purchase for $4k off. It's a great time to buy a used Tesla.
It has been for a while now actually. Ever since they got their supply chain issues sorted out and pushed more cars off the assembly line , the prices really have plummeted for at one and a half years. @@pfroo40
Yeah I was shocked looking at prices. You can find these for under 30k with 50k miles on them all day depending on the year. I’d recommend a 2017 model cause of the facelift and some other features.
@@gangatalishis And then there's France, where the cheapest model S are 20 grands (70 from 2014 with 200k miles) and 90D are no cheaper than 32k€ with 200k miles as well.

Already “tuned”, low mileage, been taken care of, knew the previous owner, upgraded audio, still has good life on the tires(saw it on the inspection part of the video), no mechanical repairs needed yet, no noticeable paint or body damage, still has usable battery…

Yeah, it's a pretty good deal. It does need an alignment though.
What would make it even better is if the previous owner also upgraded it to Autopilot HW3 or at least HW2.5. That way it could get FSD.
Battery alone almost (or maybe even) worth that depending on it's health
Door handles can be expensive to repair. I’d reccomend doing those first
Tuning dramatically lowers the price of a vehicle and in this case will void any warranty left.
The biggest problem about Tesla vehicles besides the battery are the ball bearings on the motors which Tesla won't sell you. However I recently saw a video where mechanics from Andalusia Spain recommended a company which sells a kit of heavy duty ball bearings to replace the original ones without the Tesla astronomical price.
Rex is an awesome dude! It's great to see him get a deal and help him save a couple bucks in gas here and there.
Well, we got good deal to for tesla Model S85 , mileage 145k,but battery has only 20k, full FSD option and it has free supercharging. Only 19k, no taxes , no gas...just drive.

Great Deal - Happy for Rex ! I have a 2013 p85 that still drives perfectly. It is fun as a daily driver, but also allows me to appreciate my CLS 55 on weekends when I want to appreciate the sound & feel of v8 and not waste gas $ on commutes

Strange comment about regen braking eating up the tires. Regen braking is just braking by another name, it doesn't eat up the tires any more than normal braking would.

Seriously, it's because of the weight on the tires that they wear. They literally save the tires using regen lol
@@bastionwolf Not really the weight as much as performance. All performance cars eat tires, as the torque chews them up.
In regards to Tesla Autopilot. From the article this morning.
"The NHTSA has just concluded a nearly three-year-long investigation into crashes involving cars fitted with Autopilot.
The agency said there had been at least 13 Tesla crashes, involving at least one death, and many more involving serious injuries, in which "foreseeable driver misuse of the system played an apparent role."
Foreseeable driver stupidity kills a lot of people with our w/o driver assistance. Some said the same about cruise control in the 70s

Front ball joints have always been a problem for many tesla owners, including myself.
The joints make a weird creaking noise when you are trying to maneuver in slow speed/making. U turns/ getting out of a parking.
The only ‘fix’ I found was injecting grease in the joints but that’s definitely a temporary solution. Was wondering what else wears out on Teslas.

There was a 2023 Model 3 in my city for $8000. No accidents. Its was used as an Uber with 6 drivers. It had 170,000 miles in one year. Now asking price $8000
I would imagine they supercharged it all the time, but apparently that isn't as harmful as people thought. Apart from accelerated wear and tear (cosmetic, doors, suspension), I think it was an incredible deal if warranty was still good!
Yes, it was on the local news too. These guys literally drove it 22 hours a day and supercharged the other 2. 7 days a week for a year. They made a fortune with Uber.
I would consider that. Even if it had half the range, it would be good.
There's a 2018 Model S here in Australia which got a new battery under warranty at 660,000 km (400,000 miles). It's now got over 700,000km on it. It's had one new set of brake pads.

Autopilot isn't perfect, I know from experience. It's great when it works, but a car is meant to be driven...that's the fun part of it.
I dunno.. there are definitely people on the road that I wish had self-driving cars.... because they shouldn't be behind the wheel.

Autopilot isn't nearly as advanced as Full Self Driving.
Yup. I used autopilot for a while and ended up buying FSD. Both are not perfect. I notice people, even owners of Tesla's, don't know the difference between Autopilot and FSD.

Yup, there has to be a way to know the remaining battery life. Although it can still fail sooner.
@@alejandroperez5368 yeah there is, in the diag it does do a check where it determines battery life, condition, if there are any malfunctioning cells, number of full discharges, number of times it's been charged etc.
It's like dynoing a car, it's unecessary for 99% of people to do unless you have symptoms.
@@Frygisk With an ICE car at a higher mileage, it's wise to a full set of tests, including a compression test. Not sure what the equivalent is with a BEV.

Just got a 2016 model X 75d with 7 seats today for $24,900. The thing that sold me was that it still has free supercharging for the life of the vehicle.
I hope the autopilot thing was a joke. Even Tesla says autopilot is a driver assist feature and the driver must remain in control.
The Audiocontrol LC7i is a 6 channel speaker line converter for going from regular speaker wires to RCA's to run to amps, I have the 2 channel version in my civic.
Audio control is great. They use actual resistors for crossover frequencies.

These model S are great. I got a 2015 P85D (691hp, dual motor) with 80k on the clock for $15! Fully loaded. The best part, the FREE CHARGING. It's the perfect road trip car!
No 360 cams, but 0-60 in 3.1 makes me forget about that. It's cartoonish-ly fast- I've gotten people nauseous from stop lights.... lol
The Hillbilly edition.. Only made 5 with the other 4 on cinderblocks in someone's front yard. One is being raised with a 16" lifters. Note, that vehicle is being fixed with a gunmount on the rear window.
Honestly it probably is a pretty good deal for the price and mileage. A 2016 Model Year S should also include free unlimited supercharging for life (if sold by a private party, I’ve read Tesla dealers will remove that perk before resale from the Tesla dealer). Battery is likely outside of the 8yr warranty now.
It’s an average deal. eBay motors has dozens of Model S Teslas with similar or less mileage for under $20k, some under $15k. Didn’t he hear about battery replacement costs?? In two years he’ll sell it for scrap.

But as everything, stuff can break, just like an engine can malfunction suddenly. I bet you scrap every car you've had when the engine needs a part changed?

12:16 -- I'm curious how exactly regen braking "beats up the tires a lot" ? Sounds like bull to me... deceleration is deceleration whether from regen braking, hydraulic brakes, or compression braking (e.g., letting off the gas/downshifting in an ICE car).

also… when the guy says regen wears your tires out… what do you think pressing the brakes does? Do brakes work without using the tires? Unsure how the vehicle is stopping if that’s the case… Regen doesn’t wear the tires out any more than braking does. Do you know what braking wears out that regen doesn’t? Brakes…

The older model S's like that one only have a version 2 processor and don't support so-called "Full Self Driving". They have "Autopilot" instead, which is meant for highway adaptive cruise plus lane keeping. It's NOT for driving around on surface streets, even though you can sort of do that.
Can't find anything close in germany sadly. Cheapest Model S from 2016 with less than 100k kilometers is 26k euros.
Need to do video with Freddy driving somewhere using autopilot. Would be hilarious and totally freak him out!

There was a time when cars were easy to steal and car theft was rife. But car makers have wised up and made modern cars MUCH harder to steal.
But now the car thieves are breathing sighs of relief. All they have to do is catch the guy out in the street making a phone call, as people generally with it being a phone. They can then sneak up behind, grab the phone & run. They now have full access to his car.

Due to Hertz over flooding the ev used car market, every ev car value has depreciated drastically!
It wasn't Hertz, it was speculation during the pandemic, which created a bubble which was bound to crash eventually. The market today is just a normal car market.
Rex Bro 😂😂!! Light up wheel caps, a sub, and future under glow lights 🤣. Doit!! The Etrons have the same issue with jack points so you can remove the battery. Being so heavy they tend to kill brushings quickly too along with interesting tire wear 🤷🏾♂️. Same deal with the brakes too
We also open up the battery and replace individual cells. Getting a whole pack from Germany is near impossible I guess

Congrats Rex on your 90D! I have a 2015 90D, which is essentially identical except for the front bumper design, and have driven almost 65K miles on it. It's been incredibly reliable including 2 3,000 mile trips across country. I also owned Lexus for 10 years prior to my Tesla, so the benchmark was already high. Let me know if you have any questions.

Not sure how regenerative braking is any worse for the tires than regular braking
I have a model S, and love auto pilot. Clermont to Orlando airport every day without any issues. Yes at first I was doubting it but now, I find it to be more alert then me lol love it.
Do you charge it at the airport?
I could but despite the 86 miles round trip I still get home with 37-40% charge. So I just charge at home overnight when the electric rate is lower
@@Mayimbe yes that’s interesting, here in the U.K. when our big company employers were originally pushing us to have electric lease cars, they fitted “free charging points” in the staff car parks to encourage us all but about a year later after several employees had purchased based on that advantage, the company got a letter from The Revenue to say any employee using free charging will have to be declared and pay additional income tax on the valuation of the perk. They were not happy I can assure you! 😂🤣
@@philtucker1224oh no nothing like that, the airport has chargers that we must pay for. However when ever im flying for a couple of days I would park next to a 115v outlet and plug in for free. Not designed for that but they dont say anything.

That Tesla for $17 grand with less than 60k miles is a really good deal
Until you need a $17k replacement battery. They fail due to age moreso than mileage.

@@jruerph Is this your personal opinion or based on some statistics? Reports collected from owners show that the Tesla battery degrades about 1% a year and even a 10 year old has 90% of the capacity. In the US, the battery should last 200k and this car has only about 55k. I don’t think a catastrophic battery failure is more likely than a complete loss of an ICE. Furthermore, Tavarish said that there are companies that fix the batteries and it only costs a few grand. Would you replace your ICE when you have a broken oil pump, or just get it replaced?

Freddy you’ve been to the uk quite a few times. Have you tried to explain how much fuel costs in the uk compared to the states. We pay $10 dollars a gallon.

a good part of that is you guys getting @$$ r@p3d in taxes, at this current moment taxes are literally HALF of your fuel price according to a website I found that tracks percentage of pump price that is taxes (at one point you guys where almost 75% taxes a few years back), where by comparison in the US the highest state tax is 57.6 cents per gallon and the lowest state is 9 cents per gallon and then the federal is 18.4 cents per gallon, so even in the worst state taxes are only like 21% of the fuel price. Then you have the whole War thing going on and that pipeline that got blown up causing your prices to sky rocket, provided that was how the UK got oil, I don't know on that part, but yeah you guys get really screwed on taxes over there.

@@DanielRichards644 yes we do. Never been 75% tax on top we might of actually done something but very doubtful we just lay down and take it. £1.55 a litre and 75p ish goes to tax.
@@rubenrosales725 it’s not free we all have to pay for it and 20 30 years ago it was great. Not so great anymore. Waiting 8 month for chemotherapy 2 years for a basic operation. The last 14 years of are government have destroyed this country in every way and we get over charged for everything not just in taxes.

12:18 the second time ive heard this argument, regen braking is bad for the tires. Lol, braking is braking. Maybe it effects a little because of the rate of deceleration as opposed to cruising to a stop, but tires wear based on the driver mostly
Yeah the physics don't hold up for that argument. Whether the torque is coming from the break disk or the motor shaft won't make a difference.
The worst thing for tire wear would be hard braking, which generally regen wouldn't be doing at all...
I am glad i wasn't the only one thinking this.
Maybe we are completely missing something but it shouldn't matter if motor is providing the resistance or of the break pads are providing the resistance.
But from my understanding EVs do burn though tires. But I believe it is the weight of the car that burns up the tires not the regen breaks.
Another Tesla driver here, and I also want to thank Tavarish for advising people to not be inattentive while using any of Tesla's driver assist modes. There used to be 3 driver assist modes. Autopilot the basic mode which comes with every Tesla as a standard option is adaptive cruise control while also maintaining travel in your current lane of travel with autosteer--it really is amazing, and designed for use on highways only. Highway only as it will not stop for stop signs or traffic light controls. It also will not change lanes on its own, or obey a command by the driver using the turn signal to indicate what the driver wants the car to do. But once you pick a lane, and turn on Autopilot it is a beautiful thing, albeit the most limited mode--but totally free!
They had an enhanced mode that did change lanes and did obey traffic controls, but wouldn't get you from point A to point B using navigation. It would just drive down the road you were on. Enhanced seems have been eliminated. Not providing enough added benefit for the cost, considering how good FSD is today, which is now available as a $99 monthly subscription. Enhanced is still around, on older vehicles where it was purchased outright, but doesn't seem to be an option for new purchases.
Then there is the Supervised full self driving option. With hands on the wheel and staying attentive the car will take you anywhere you want to go, on pretty much any road. It still has some issues, like going faster than you want and going slower than you want. It can get stumped on how to get our of a parking lot, or whether a bus lane is really a travel lane, but that's where the human driver plays a pivotal role. FSD let's you relax in say bumper to bumper traffic, or moving out of the fast lane when a faster driver comes up behind you, or moving to passing lane when the car in front of you is going to slow. It will get you in the correct lane to exit, it will navigate city streets, avoid most obstacles, yield to pedestrians and anything else a driver should be doing. But sometimes it makes mistakes, misinterprets just like humans, and that's where the attentive driver overrides the system. Sometimes it is as simple as just pressing the accelerator pedal a little bit because the car is being too cautious and has slowed down too much, sometimes you need to take over an steer the car into or out of the lane it has chosen, or maybe it is taking the turn to tight and will scrape the curve. But overall, it is a excellent copilot, many times seeing things before you do, like pedestrians dressed in black against a background of a black lamp post just before they step on to the crowsswalk. FSD is good, most human drivers are okay to good, together FSD and the human driver are better. But you cannot and should not start using your phone, watching a video, or do any other activity that will result in you being inattentive. You are responsible ultimately, FSD is simply an assistive mode, like the cruise control we have used for years, it does not relieve you of your responsibility as a driver.

I really like the fact that this mechanic knows that even with mainstream media talks about Teslas, it's actually not what people think. I like that he covered the fact that if it were a gas car it would have been much worse vs an EV. A lot of people think EV's are more dangerous, when in reality it's not. I'm not a hater of gas by an means, I just like data and facts.
EV’s are worse than ICE cars in every single comparison, except maybe 0 - 60mph, even then, that’s debatable.
Probably why no one wants to invest, sales are tanking, lay offs in the EV industry are happening and then “bubble” has burst.
There’s a place for EV cars, but it’s a small place.

The reason the steering felt heavy is that you are using SPORT mode for the steering. Change it to COMFORT and it will be much easier and lighter but still give reasonable feedback.
I have had the earlier P85D for 7 years and love it so I have had the time to try a lot of the settings.

@@philtucker1224 I still have the P85D. I ordered a Plaid but they cancelled the RHD. There is no other car I want other than the Model S so I will keep mine until it dies unless Tesla change their decision.
