NOTE: this video is all in reference to a 24fps base playback. ALSO, What’s your favourite camera for slow motion?
My trusty GH5 😍
@@chris.chiutena Love it!
Liking my xt4 - it seems to have a solid 120fps
My favorite slow motion camera is the one I have, 🤣 so far using 60 fps on my EOS R has been great, only a couple of times have I used the 120 fps for fixed shots of food falling or stuff that I can fix focus
@@imAnsar great camera!
I remember the first time I used an FS700.... everything 240fps. EVERYTHING 😂
EVERYTHING.
Ok, if Matt WhoisMatt is following Mark Bone, then I best get on it pronto..
Hahaha 🤪🤣
How much data rate?
I had the same thing when I bought a phone that filmed HD240fps.
This is a video I've planned on making for the past year, but now I don't have to because you did a WAY better job than I could have.
THANK YOU!
ha! Thanks mate! I even ran in it 😬 just missing a One-Wheel 🤷🏻♂️
@@markbone What if i shoot at 60fps and export and 60fps or 30fps? Will this cause a problem?
Everyone now uses slow mo for everything. It looks great for a few seconds and then gets boring.
But you're not talking about frame rate... you're talking about slowing stuff down by varying degrees, which can only become possible when you start shooting at higher frame rates.
"for him"
I really don't understand what the fuck he was talking about considering the question is "to shoot at 24fps or 120 fps".
The question was never when to have motion blur or when to have details, because 240fps would easily win that by simply playing it back at 24fps....
The real disadvantage of 480 fps and 960 fps is that 1920fps takes up less space then 3840fps. everything else is up to the director, if you only caught 24fps the that's all that you got to work with.
he did have a run in the sun so he was shirt less for that video, also you got to give that man credit for the sunglasses they really did look cinematic, not like some fuck boy that got a degree in arts.
Seriously I don't even film shit and I know that the faster the fps the more light it requires, a 24fps shot would require more light thus the exposure would be more, that's what gives a back alley fight more "feel", it's dimly lit, fast ad "gritty" compared to a 60fps action shot in a brightly lit environment where every detail matter.
I mea I didn't have daddy money or felt the need to expose myself to a camera on the internet. maybe I'm wrong
@@svampebob007 you are correct…many still have not figured it out yet.
He gave great advice
You make an excellent point. His unstated assumptions are atrocious. This is YT, not second year cinema. We're all left to guess something like this... "All shots are played at a frame rate of 60fps, so divide 60 by the recording frame rate to get the playback speed." That would make a RECORDING frame rate of 120 play at 0.5x real time and a RECORDING frame rate of 30 play at 2x real time. The crucial five second explanation is sorely missed.
Thank you. I am a novice and thought something was missing, but was not sure what.
"Shoot at 60fps and playback at 60fps" is not slow motion, just higher detail.
It's refreshing to get film advice on RUclips from someone who's had actual success and actual experience in the industry lol. Keep up the good work man! Love your videos!

00:43 🎥 Frame rates guide: 24 frames for real-time, 60 frames for regular human movements, 120 frames for fast human movements and elements like rain or fire, and 180 frames for super slow-motion and high-action movements.
03:21 🧐 Slow motion can make your video look cinematic, but overusing it can make the film feel slow and overdramatic.
04:43 🎬 Using 23.98 or 24 frames for real-time moments is crucial to maintaining sync sound and creating a connection with your audience.
06:11 🔊 Using 60 frames for important moments can create a contrast and make those moments more impactful.
08:30 🏹 Consider using 180 frames or above for scenes that need a surreal or impressionistic feel, such as kinetic actions or fast-moving elements.

I can't believe how well you discussed this topic. The humor helps too. I have a lot to learn! I'm subbing!
Just starting with video work and your explaination is very helpful - thanks!
loved this video so much!
one year later, apple fixed it!
this lady in the pic confused with all this calculation, is a successful brazilian actress. Her name is Renata Sorrah. This expression of her was performed during a soap opera in 2004, and eventually turned into a meme. teh simply fact that put her face on your video made my day thankyou for everything.
Great examples BUT... you left off that some people shoot entirely at 60fps and plays at normal speed not slo mo. I guess your examples are 24fps time line and when dropping in 60/120/180 fps motion is slow?
I got some footage on my Mavic 2, at 24fps and dropped it into a 30fps timeline, and FCPX added a duplicate frame every four frames to make up the disparity in frame rates. I don't know, but my guess is that frame rates that don't multiply or divide equally to the timeline will suffer. So, maybe a 30fps timeline for those 'slo-mo's' you mentioned? 24fps 'not playing well with others' is why I almost never shoot 24fps.
I could be wrong... (BTW, I'm shooting on an EOSR and 70D at the moment, plus Hero7 and Hero8, Osmo Pocket, Osmo Action as well, and combine a lot of various footage, all shot at multiples of 30.)
Lost in math kiura🤪! Scary
Look at the frame rates that each of those devices support for example if they all are capable of supporting 30p it probably makes sense to set all of the devices to 30p. If they do not all support a common frame rate then find a good compromise.
Something shot in 30p on a 24p timeline most of the time no one would notice because they'll be too focused on the action. Another factor is what codecs are used to encode the video on each device chances are that each device encodes the video with a slightly different method - I have a generic GoPro which does use a good codec so my editor must re-encode those parts because even though the frame rate is the same. Still, you would not notice this in the end result the only thing is it takes longer to encode the file to generate the final product. The most important takeaway is it's good to develop a knowledge of the problems that can appear when combining different frame rates.
Exactly. This should have been pointed out at the beginning of the vid. I also shoot at 30fps on a 30fps timeline. Then 60fps 120fps drop in perfectly.
Paul C believe me, you notice a distinct jitter from one frame being dropped every five frames!

💯💯 Slow Motion is amazing but not all the time 😬
Cinematic = "seeing things differently than we normally see it" thanks Mark. Just writing it here as a little reminder..
You continue to deliver! As a guy that enjoys running, cool to see you use a running example to explain the frame rates. 🙌🏾
I LOVE TO RUN
That's a brilliant explanation of "cinematic" - you get to see things in a way you wouldn't normally see them. I used to teach a class on theatre and would always ask the question 'what is meant when we say something is theatrical?' My answer is that something happens on stage that's magical and leaves an audience either enthralled by what they did, how they did it or a combination of the two - and we're impressed because it would be easy to show that thing in a movie but not on stage. For example, in the stage play version of War Horse they create a man riding a life size galloping horse on stage, with puppetry - and as an audience you're left marvelling at how they achieved that effect.

Love this topic! I needed some of this info!!!
This was super helpful! I'm just getting into studying cinematography to improve my RUclips channel and this was just what I needed to know! One quick question, though. At 120 fps, I start getting flickering in my recording when attempting this inside under fluorescent lights. Sounds like this is best used in outdoor spaces?
Try to vary the shutter speed, 1/320s might do the job
@@ferrysudantara9735 Thank you! I'll try that!
Our A/C power in the US runs at 60 Hz(50hz in EU) so if you shoot in framerates higher than 60fps you can get a flicker from lights using that power. Quality video lights convert this power to D/C and eliminate this issue. There are also ways to fix this in post. Even LEDS can flicker if they use a dimming process called pulse width modulation(google pwm to learn more).
Theres also the option to use davincis deflicker setting, really does work wonders if you have a robust enough file. Ive been able to achieve 240fps under led household bulbs (i was on a canon c700 mind you, so please post your results with your camera, id be really interested to see)
@@loganfishbeard And LEDs don't even need to be dimmed to be suffering from PWM or AC-ripple. LED power supplies can suffer from AC-ripple when their filtering is not (what I call) up to standards (as I think LED-lighting should not have any flicker at all, whether it be a videolight or normal household/office lighting) but there are also quite a lot of power supplies for LEDs that suffer flicker from PWM driven circuitry. Those last are usually the hardest to deal with as the frequency can differ from light to light or can even vary with the temperature of the LED itself (higher temperature can have the driver lower the dutycycle but some counteract possible flicker by also raising the frequency)
AC-ripple is simple: match your framerate to the power-supply frequency and make sure you choose a shutterspeed that is always a double, qaudruple and so on of your framerate, although it doesn't guarantee you won't have trouble with banding.
One advice though: a real videocamera usually suffers far less from banding/flickering than a smartphone or digital photocamera, which is just down to how the sensor is read. Downside is that where a smartphone or photocamera starts to get issues with banding, a videocamera usually has the whole frame affected ;)
I already know about frame rates but your explanation is better than I've heard from most people. I'm also glad you're addressing the over used 120fps.
🙏🏻
When making these types of videos, it would be helpful if you make sure the viewer knows you're talking about filmmaking, since 60 fps is often used to get a more realistic effect when played back at 60 fps. It's not always just for slow motion.
agreed
Dont usually comment on youtube videos but this was extremely helpful. Thank you.

That's probably the best description of cinematic I've heard. It explains a lot of why people say high frame rates (for actual real-time playback not slow motion) is not cinematic, because its more true-to-life, so indeed less cinematic.
Personally I don't like 24fps for playback as I like to pixel peep and motion blur (or display pixel latency) spoils that, plus when I'm suffering mild vertigo its uncomfortable, but I totally understand why from a cinematography point of view there is some logic to it. Not least that if you WANT slow motion, then if you were presenting at 60fps then you're going to need to capture at such insanely high frame rates to achieve the same effect.
Dang, this is a video I didn't know I needed. You're fantastic Mark. Always giving us practical, implementable advice.

Sorry I'm just seeing your video so I'm a bit late to the party, great explination of what the different rates are best use for. Can you explain why these different uses must be filmed at 24, 60 or 120 instead of filming everything at 120 and just export at the 24, 60 or 120 that you need for the clip you are working in?
If you shoot everthing at 120, export it at 24, you would lose motion blur when you want motion blur
Another knowledge obtained. I was curious about this FPS because I've been watching phone reviews and now I understand how this work. This so helpful!
Thank you, Mark! I needed to see this. I shoot underwater and definitely overuse slow motion. Appreciate these specific tips and your content in general. Your approach is practical while also keeping it fun and entertaining. Keep it coming!

Thanks Sam :) happy to post more videos when I can!
Hey mark, can we combine 24 fps and 60 fps in one video taking?
Like in the beginning regular movement 24fps, and in the end use 60fps for slow motion
Great video, good info on FPS/slow motion, but mind blown, “they drop the sound before the explosion for contrast” lesson learnt and will apply in the future.
Sneaky little trick
Mark Bone I just used it in a contest I entered thank you!
A good tip is to not make 60FPS to slow it down, but to be played back as 60FPS - as it's a lot smoother than 30FPS, and because of the halved motion blur it also means a much sharper footage that still lets you clearly see objects in motion even if it plays back at full speed. Similarily, if you then shoot 120FPS you can half that down to 60FPS and get that dream like feeling without quartering the speed of motion. :)
apparently people prefer the motion blur? What you're saying makes a lot more sense
60 fps looks 💩 and not natural at all
@@justafrenchkidtryingtospea9462 I sort of agree. It doesn't look cinematic at all but it is great for sports broadcasts.
@@justafrenchkidtryingtospea9462 - That's just because you're not used to it. Obviously our eyes work at least at 60fps (otherwise we wouldn't notice the difference,) so if frame rates above 24fps "don't look natural," that's just in one's head. (That, or you're watching something where AI took 24fps video and tried to make it look like natural 60fps, which usually DOES look like crap.)
- Should I use 120FPS for capturing a tennis/ping pong game instead of 60/24 FPS ?
24fps : Real Time - good for having audience relating to ur film because it's real life
60fps : Slow Human Movements - Slower than real-time.
120 : Smoke, Water, Basketball player, Fire flickering.
180 : Ppl Jumping off waterfall(Very fast motion). Used for when u want to slow downtime.
Very late to this video but what a straightforward and simple way to explain the frame rate differences and their potential applications. This made so much sense to me. Great work 👍🏼

Please cover when to use image stabilization (lens or body) and when you might not in regards to hand held, and in camera transitions.
Well basically all those times stability is not an issue: so when you're shooting from a tripod or use a gimbal: turn stabilisation OFF. It will try to prevent a pan as it thinks it's movement, and especially in a gimbal, that compensates for movement itself, it could really counteract the image.
Even when you're shooting handheld, stabilisation can be a thing you might want to turn off. The GH5 does a fantastic job at stabilisation, but when you are getting better at panning or tilting by hand, this can introduce the same unwanted effects as when on a tripod. (what you'll see is that when you start and stop panning, the sensor basically lags for a while and when coming to a stop after your pan, it could overcompensate and cause a kind of soft bounce-back like effect.
Out of all videos, this was the best to understand it properly! Keep it up!

Kind of confusing. You film in some frame rate YET you play it back at another rate . You didn’t film at 120fps, then also play it back at 120fps. It’s in “slow motion” so you are playing it back at a slower rate (slo mo). Confusing 🫤. What topic are you talking about , slow motion (filming at one rate then playing back at a slower rate) , or just different film rates played back at the rate they were filmed in. Example: 60fps / played back at 60fps looks unnatural , yet 60fps played back at 24 fps looks good and also has a “slow mo effect”. You made a how to video about slow motion NOT film rates.

Love your shots in Sri Lanka💓. Love from SL
😍
I'm in Australia, where we use the PAL system, not NTSC. It's 25fps here, and 1/50th is a good 'default' shutter speed.
I can't see much need to change that, for my style of shooting, although the killing of motion-blur might cause me to try variants on my default, as long as the shutter speeds I experiment with are multiples of 25 -- 25, 50, 100, 125, 250, etc.
Many of us are from a stills background, and now that our cameras will produce high quality video, we have a new chapter of learning to pass through.
Finally a video in frame rate that is practical, visual and meaningful.
