I have tasted lentil soup from almost every social and cultural context. Its a dish I prepare frequently as it is a real antidote to our grim northern winter weather. But I have to say that this is the very best lentil soup I have ever tasted, without any doubt or reservation. Thank you for sharing this with us. It is absolutely sublime.
No where near greek this recipe! Parsley? 40 years lived there never seen red lentil soup in any place. Since youtube i understand we try different culture foods but this is not greek!
@@stygas, In her defense (she annoys me for a variety of other reasons): Germany, in its entirety (whatever that is / was), had 400 types of bread as opposed to only 200 different dialects. Before the combustion engine, traveling 15km. by oxcart was called a "journey", so things got localized & pretty isolated. I knew one small village in the 1970s, where 3/4ths of the citizens had the same last name. Kind regards!
Tried this and it’s THE BEST recipe for red lentils, honestly. The sweetness from the carrots and onion mixed with the acid of the crushed tomatoes, perfection!! I put a little more crushed tomatoes than the recipe called for and more pepper flakes 🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽
I tried this tonight and it was amazing!! i added in extra veggies and some shredded turkey to make it a little more hearty since i dont eat bread. this was awesome!
I have to tell you this is the most amazing and delicious soup I have ever made! I am learning with you a lot of recipes that are helping me with my diet and weight loss!!! Thank you!
Greek lentil soup is my manna. I grew up eating it and always will. When i moved to Greece (Crete) i was delighted when i found that one of my friends and co-worker Nicos regularly potted a good lentil soup for lunch, just like my mom taught me. We used regular green lentils, lots and lots of Greek olive oil, garlic, some onion (not too much), mash up a bunch of tomatoes, water, salt, pepper, Greek oregano, a bay leaf, maybe ditanny. When almost done add a big handful of sliced spinach & parsley, or any nice leafy green or field green (if tough add earlier). Add the lemon or some wine must vinegar. Chewy bread, a salad, with feta & olives, coffee & wine makes a great dinner. Soup or dachos/dakhos... my fav. Breakfast, elevanses, lunch or dinner. Dakhos are twice baked and dried whole meal risks, sliced or broken open, sprinkled with a bit of H2O to rehydrate and slathered with a grating of garlic and tomato, olive oil, feta and a bit of pepper and oregano. I miss those sooo much!
Just made a pot of this and it's EXCELLENT!!! It's out of this world! You get this lovely earthy soup, and a little bite of lemon zest here, a little perfume of cumin there, then some oregano.. Then the tang of the lemon juice, just exquisite and garnishing with the fresh parsley, feta and drizzle of olive oil!!! Just so delicious I could have poured it over my head and bathed in it. It's that good! Bravo!
So I made this very recipe tonight, and I have one thing to say: if you haven't tried it yet already, do! You will not regret it! In my version I used whole canned (peeled) tomatoes; I think the consistency I got was a bit chunkier (and I love chunky soups). Other than that the game plan was the same... and here I am, simultaneously stuffing my face and trying to savour it (a tricky balance!)
I made this today. I added a few roasted Roma tomatoes I needed to use up but followed the recipe other than that and it's so amazingly delicious. I did add the feta and I've never had anything like that. Loved sweeping this soup up with my fresh crusty bread 🤤
my ex hairdresser is greek and she looks just like this lady! anyway I tried Turkish lentil soup and they put a lot of mint leaves. it s nice, but i ll try it this way next time, basically the difference is in oregano, cumin and rosemary. I do it often and it lasts the whole week in a fridge, v good for dinner.Tip: dont put the lemon juice in the whole thing, but as you eat it, add just before eating into your own bowl. so that next day when you reheat it, you do not reheat it with the lemon juice. just add some when you eat it.
Turkish lentil soup is seasonal. Typically, in the winter, there is almost no mint and more chili. Variations are also regional from the lentil used to the herb levels. And yes, they always serve the lemon, and of course fresh bread, on the side - çorba and ekmek was one of my favourite breakfasts. Big yum. I'm trying this Greek version tonight!
@@joesavoia5399 This RUclipsr is probably Egyptian. Greeks don’t look Egyptian and certainly wouldn’t want to be associated with Egypt. Egypt is Middle Eastern. Greeks are the real Mediterranean.
I made this soup but I made a slight change based in what I had in the fridge. I used fresh tomatoes and a 2 tables spoons of tomato paste because the tomatoes were about to go bad and I didn't want to waste them. Everything else was exactly like you said. This recipe is sooo good! Multiple people said it was yummy. It makes a lot so you can put a few individual portions in the freezer for a day when you don't feel like cooking. Thank you so much for this recipe!
I made this and it is amazing, the feta cheese and blending the soup is a must. Tip: if you don't have an immersion blender you can blend the soup in a blender and return to pot.
Is one of my favourite soup this one.Now me as a Greek and as cook, will recommend to take out the oregano, it doesn't go in this soup and instead of lemon, add vinegar from red wine. Try it 😋😋😋
I made this! My favorite red lentil soup to date! Sooo good. And sooo simple. And so fresh testing! I followed the ingredients to a tee but I didnt follow the measurements. I had four or five Roma frozen tomatoes that I had blanched for a salsa and ran out of time to make. So I boiled some vege broth threw that over the frozen Roma tomatoes and blended. I used a full yellow onion, maybe 8 or 9 carrots and didn’t blend because I like chunky soup. I used a handful of oregano slightly less cumin a fresh spring of rosemary I just threw in etc … definitely don’t forget the zest of the lemon or the juice because it really does make the dish as well as the feta in my opinion. Soooo delish!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe with me. I didn’t have any feta so I used queso fresco crumbled to top it off. Absolutely Delicious! Simple to make but difficult to stop eating it😋
OMG, I love this woman! Suzy, your recipes are all scrumptious, and you are just so much fun to watch. I would give anything to have you as a guest in our kitchen. Hey, Food Network....are you paying attention?!?
I just done it and it is very tasty! Thank you for sharing this recipe! I added dried basil instead of rosemary (which I do not have now) and I like it. Finally I added more garlic as I am a garlic fan. My husband is Greek, I hope he will enjoy it too :)
I made this yesterday and it's phenomenal! Tasted great without the lemon juice but I put a little bit in. Not sure it necessarily needs it, or the extra salt, depending on your broth content.
I made this red lentil soup and your Mediterranean Couscous Salad. Served with Nan bread. So wonderfully delicious. I choose to use queso fresco instead of Feta. Perfect!
Have just finished a batch made it exactly the same but couldn’t find pepper flakes so used red peppers in a jar. It is very tasty and a thick soup my husband keeps saying that smells so good. Worth making thank you.
I make a big pot of your healthy recipe and take it to work for lunches. It lasts me a week and is delicious. I also love many of your other recipes. Thank you.
Oh my Gosh, this soup is amazing!! I’ve looked for sooo long for one recipe with red lentils that I’ll enjoy and it will be easy to make… and here it is! It was gorgeous and so quick to make ❤ thank you so much for sharing this! Love from a new subscriber
well this kept me fed for most of last week. i am amazed that such humble ingredients can produce such a tasty dish. i think the spice blend is what makes it so special.
wonderful, wonderful recipe!! adjusted it accordingly to make it a single-serving and turned out delicious! This recipe is also a PERFECT transition into fall season! thank you for yet another heart-satisfying soup Suzy!
I actually did this soup last week and I added a bit of jasmine rice (i know might not be what you would add) which gave it a mellow light sweetness, it was delicious, best red lentil soup I have had and lentil soups are my fav to make :) and for a vegan touch you can use nutritional yeast for the cheese

I started making this recipe two years ago and it’s still one of my favorite recipes! 😋

Dried mint is good too.........Is that Red Wine Vinegar ? How much do you add ?
I just made this dish and it is delicious! I changed the recipe slightly by adding a fire roasted red bell pepper to the pot.

I love all Greek food 👌
Made it for the second time this month. Best lentil soup I have made for the family yet.
I love lentils and dahl. This will definitely be tried.
I made this, it’s so wonderful! I feel like next time I make it I will garnish with some Kalamata olives❤
Thanks for the enthusiastic presentation😊. I prefer it hearty though without the blending, so delicious both ways.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe with me. I didn’t have any feta so I used queso fresco crumbled to top it off. Absolutely Delicious! Simple to make but difficult to stop eating it😋
Probably would have removed the bay leaves before blending. But really looks great.
Would do the same, good point!
You don’t eat the bay leaves. They are just for flavor.
I was thinking the same thing! 💀
No we are not. You just take them out when eat your lentil soup.
