Great video!! It's hard to beat the 50mm summilux black chrome. My 50 Noctilux barely sees any use because I can't justify the size and weight over the lux. As far as lens flare goes, what kind of filter do you use on the lux? Im asking because I shoot into the sun a lot and rarely get flare.

    • @teribphotography
      @teribphotography  4 месяца назад

We are on the same page here, the noctilux is bulkier for sure but the image quality didn't quite justify it for me. I have a basic uv filter lens - what version do you have? Mine is farily older, from the 60's, it has lots of weird quirks - partly why I love it so!

Very interesting. Are you able to focus those wide open lenses through the rangefinder? I have a M240 but can't do it for the life of me. Have to use the screen. Old eyes i guess.

What advice do you have for photographers dreaming of getting their first digital “m” camera. What do you think the entry point would be in terms of what you would consider usable for professional wedding imagery in 2024. Used m240 bodies seem to be around $3000 these days…. Even m8 is up there still…. Really appreciate your content. Your aesthetic and overall approach really resonates with me. I have found myself moving backwards technologically to find a photographic tool that helps me create images with more emotional impact and one that i connect with. Up to now I’ve only bonded with my Canon 5d classic but I find it to be too slow and the shutter (while badass) is embarrassingly loud for wedding work 😂

Great feedback Terri. I also own the Summilux 50 f1.4 II. And been tempted to get the Noctilux 50 f1.2. I ended up going with the Voigtlander 75mm f1.5 and I’m in love with that lens. I figured getting more reach was appropriate since I already have two 50’s already.
Check out the 75 f1.5. You may love it. The bokeh at f1.5 is super smooth. Lens is sharp with character. I find it easy to focus with wide open. I have a review coming up soon. Keep up the good work.

Nice real-world review Teri. It’d be fun to get your impression of the Leica Noctilux-M 50 mm f/0.95. From what I’ve heard, the M11’s Visoflex EVF helps nail focus more often with that lens (not surprising, given the narrow DOF). At ~ 700 g, the 50/0.95 is no featherweight!
I’ve been playing with the Leica Noctilux-M 75 mm f/1.25 on an SL2. Even at 1,000 grams, it balances pretty well on that body and isolates subjects quite well. I’ll soon try the 75/1.25 on my M11.
The Summilux-M 50 sounds like a winner. I’m getting a Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 50 mm f/2 and then will order the Summilux-M 50 later this year.

Yeah, I’m really interested in trying the noctilux .95, even with the extra weight I have a feeling the images will be unlike anything else. Now I’m interested in the 75mm noctilux after your experience … nothing makes me happier than my summilux 50mm right now though :) you’ll have to let me know how you like it

For anyone that is able afford the Leica, i don’t doubt it is fantastic. But for anyone on a budget, the Voigtlander 50mm f1.2 that i have is probably almost as good in most respects for a fraction of the Leica. it has some of the most pleasing bokeh transition and smoothness at f1.2 that I’ve ever seen out of a non-Leica lens. and the build quality is very good. I never tried the slower Voigtlander 50mm F2 APO, so I can’t comment on that compared to the Leica Summicron. But I would also consider Voigtlander f2 APO if all I wanted/needed was an f2 lens on a budget. Note that Voigtlander has discontinued the f1.2 as they continue come out with yet other 50mm variants. so if you want one, get it now if you want new. no guarantees but it is possible the price might increase over time if they get harder find used in. a year or two. i thoroughly enjoyed this video..

Hi James! Thanks so much for taking the time to check this out and for this scoop on voigtlander. I actually have the 70mm and enjoy it for nice detail shots. The 50mm summilux was certainly an investment but it’s been so great for me I haven’t considered another option there. This is great to know though , especially to have a backup or something. Thanks so much!

It's a reissue of a lens from 1966. Made for collectors and people chasing a vintage look, just like the 35mm Summilux steel rim, 90mm Thanbar and 28mm Summaron.
I shoot the 50mm ASPH too and love it to death, I can understand why certain photographers may prefer the idea of something a little less sharp/with more character though.

I owned an f1 Noct for a couple of years but sold it. I never found much use for the lens on my digital Ms. That being said, I did find it useful in low light on my M6 since I typically shot ISO 400 BW or ISO 50 Velvia. Yes, it can provide some stunning isolation when wide open and if subject isolation is a prime factor in your style of work, it might be worth considering. If you buy one, don't forget to purchase a 10 stop ND filter as well!!

Seems like a nice setup but I would also carry another camera with a wide and telephoto for a wedding or event. Using a range of focal lengths will create a more visually diverse set of images and make it easier to get the best compositions possible as the situation evolves. Shooting just a 50mm is like painting a canvas with one size brush. It is possible but can be limiting.

    • @annenominous7220

disagree... one lens makes a "point of view" wedding album that is timeless, multi-lens setups, even if the viewer does not notice it at first, are jarring compared to a single lens album.

Looks like the true value of the Noctilux is on low-light/ overcast/ diffused light! Even in your photos, the low light shots have a distinctive look to them while the bright daylight shots look like they could be on any other lens. So maybe this could be your "screw it" lens, where you use it the right conditions and get the most unique look that you wouldn't get otherwise? Just a random thought - Cheers!
