I sold my M240 and bought a Leica M-A and a M6 TTL. This year is an analog experiment. I love it so far. I will eventually by a M11-P but I am in no hurry. I feel life slows down for me when shooting film. Film photography keeps me in the present moment. Enjoy your MP. :)
Really appreciate you watching and sharing - it's so cool that you are in your analog experiment phase, I wish you great things in the ride. You have such a nice outlook on life, inspiring - thanks again :)
I love that photograph of the bride descending the stairs with the groom at the bottom, off-centre. That's a really, really beautiful shot and tells a story in the most perfect way. (sorry, a bit random but that's me)
So excited for another video! Great thoughts, and excited to see more work in the coming year. Also, I remember seeing a while ago a little hot shoe covers that that you can get with film stocks on them. I believe it was on Etsy, but it might be a helpful addition.
You're so nice for the encouragement - I did check out some hot shoe covers on ebay after reading this - great idea! I'll consider it for sure. Using the camera this week I did feel slightly silly, knowing that the dial does clue you in - I just use a variety of film stocks [cinestill & kodak] so it's tough to keep them straight!
I owned a Leica M3 Double Stroke back in the mid 80s for a short time. I sold it to help subsidize my first book project and never returned to Leica. However, I have received acquired some very nice Canon VT Deluxe rangefinders with canon and Voightlander LTM lenses to downsize my film photography. As a result I've been viewing Leica videos like yours to get reacquainted with rangefinder photography. I congratulate you on your Leica MP purchase. If I were in the market for Leica it would be my choice as well. Very elegant and solid analog shooter.📷🏆👍
So nice of you to take time to watch and comment! sounds like a first book was a better investment. I still love even my canon ae-1 program but it's something about the rangefinder, the lens, the shutter. Leica M's have my whole heart - I do feel fortunate to get to use them - appreciate you!
I find that "tightening up" the film in the film canister BEFORE I load it into my M-A really helps. When I do that the (two red dots on the) rewind knob starts turning pretty much right away. Also, Rock n Roll camera straps come with two leather washers (which fit around the camera's strap lugs) which help to protect the camera body from abrasion.
I am 100% with you on the loading of film in my MP!!! I put through the end ‘gap’.. make sure it’s in…. But never sure!! I watch the rewind crank move, I tighten… I still think I didn’t do it right- love love love the photog experience with it. You can borrow my M3 if you come to SF… such a classic- that’s easy to load !!
Learning curve for sure with the load, I've gotten to be a pro this fall. I actually find if the film is chilled it loads better - kinda weird but it works! Would LOVE TO BORROW YOUR M3!!
couple of tips to prolong its shutter life: dont advance and leave cocked more than an hour or so. When advancing dont let the lever spring back and hit to body but gently guide it back with you thumb. The first tip prevents the springs from losing tension and your shutter malfunctioning, the second one prevents dents on the body but also prevents your frame spacing to move, the rebound from letting the lever hit often causes frame spacing issues over time in my experience as the cams for spaying are simply tensioned down and not necessarily fixed to a certain position. I love your photos btw!
Keeping the spring cocked has less of an effect on the long term functionality of the camera. It does no harm to have a handling protocol that is consistent, but really don't worry about it if you forget. Even uncocked the spring is still well tensioned
@@yonmusak it will cause shutter capping over time. especially with older cameras you really shouldnt leave cocked. I repair cameras, mostly leicas for people and youd be amazed how many come with capping shutters due to wrong use.
Really appreciate these tips and am embarrassed for how long it took me to respond - my season got into full force. I will definitely start adapting some of these! THANK YOU!
Having grown up on film. I primarily use my digital Leicas. i will from time to time brag some film just to make sure my Leica m's are still working and just because. Lovely video and review.
Totally get it! The images on my m11 are superior in nearly every way, however, I just can't get over film right now. Thanks so much for the encouragement!
This camera brings up such complex thoughts, I really think the Leica M is an over priced vintage luxury item... saying that its super cool and I desperately wish I had one. Glad your back and showing us what you can do with that awesome camera.
Ah, so cool of you to take time to watch - Leica's are luxury for sure. I'm fortunate to use them for work and get to experiment along the way. Would so encourage you to pick one up someday though... lol thanks again!
Regarding remembering the film stock you loaded: I cut a very small part off the film packaging and instead of keeping it at the back of the camera like with the A-1 I put it in the hot shoe ;-)
Ah, thanks so much - I try to be engaging and knowledgeable without rambling - these words are so kind, thanks for encouraging me! ... get the MP!!! ;)
Nice review. If you cut the film box to size and tape it up, you can stick a tiny reminder in the hotshoe for what film you have. That's what I do to help me remember!
The MP looks like a lovely camera. Thanks for your thoughts. I'm shooting an M4 and barnack iiif for film and M10-R and M8.2 for digital over on my channel. All a ton of fun. Someday I'll try the MP. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
Thanks so much for the kinds words here, Colin - I just subscribed to you and can't wait to check out some of your photo walks. I'd love to document more of my travels in some way but I find the editing so cumbersome along with my hours of wedding editing. But yes, the MP is fantastic! :)

I have an M4, had an M6 before. Putting the baseplate on before you advance to frame one helps too. 🍻
i tend to still keep the baseplate open so i can see that it is actually advances - scarred from previous mistakes, ill get there! great tip about slightly bending/folding the film - i will try!!
Such a great camera and a really joyous review that gets to the heart of the MP - for me, it just feels the perfect creative tool. Love it! As for the lack of a film label frame (do these even have a name?), I tear off a bit from the film box and wedge it in the hotshoe mount - normally the ISO bit or the main box colour does the job.
Ah, I'm so glad you found this video and took time to check it out. The MP is wonderful and you get it too. Appreciate your film label idea! I'll have to make tiny tears and give it a go this week!
Nice Q&A👍🍀📷 some Answers could be from me😎👍 I shoot film with different Cameras.. Nikon, Barnack Leicas and some M. But the M (for me my M4-P) is my daily driver and can understand why you love your MP (or yours without using the lighmeter lile a M-A;) ) Have fun and shoot film, nice greets from Austria, Europe📷👏
so cool of you to check this out and say HI~! I don't know barnack? So neat about the M4-P, such a beautiful tool! I know, I could've easily just gotten the MA lol Appreciate you! HAppy shooting! -t
Kudos on knowing to read-light and being able to shoot manually-- I see so many people on RUclips taking forever to pull out the sekonic or pentax spot meter and meter a shot that's basically identical to a shot they just took, there's really only 11 stops of light from dark to a bright sunny day, so I really think people overthink it sometimes with exposure
Ah, thanks so much for taking the time to check this out and for making this great point. I understand the need to get the exposure right but must it be perfectly dialed in and calculated to a tee? For me, life is too short!! lol I will remember this tidbit when I get crap for it in the future so thanks Zach!
I loved my MPs. There is a noticeable difference in the mechanical pieces, such as the film advance and that wonderful gear train noise that the shutter mechanism emits. Apart from the question of the ages (“What do I do with the bottom plate while loading film?”), I found loading film was pretty faultless as long as you pull enough of the leader into the take-up spool, check to be sure the film is aligned with the gears (I don’t follow the instructions that suggest just letting the bottom plate push the film down.), and check the tension on and movement of the rewind knob. Your sample images are wonderful. The shot of the airplane in the diffused light of the hangar really struck me, almost like a dream.
Such a nice way with words and I so appreciate you taking the time to watch and share some nice insights. Yes, you couldn't be more right about how the heck do I hold this bottom plate?! I still have many issues loading, especially if the film is heavy [slide e10, provia] or lighter [hp5] but at least can breathe and fix it in a moment when I need to be quick. I really like the airplane hanger shot too - its from the Tillamook air museum in Oregon, strange place but worth seeing once.
Thanks Teri. After fumbling a bottom plate and dropping it on the pavement one time, I generally defaulted to either placing it in a shirt pocket (risking introducing lint) or, the old standby, holding it between my lips 😊 I will add the Tillamook air museum to my list. That light, the hangar, and the plane push all my buttons. (I’m a mechanical nut, mostly concerning motorcycles these days, and looking forward to a long journey this summer, including riding to Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories this summer). I really respect your incorporation of both analog and digital M cameras in your work, which shows you enjoy the experience in addition to striving for great work product.
Why’d you go with the silver version? I only ask because I was so torn between the gorgeous black paint version. I went with black :> The only slight annoyance I found on the mp (coming from an m7/m10) is the smaller shutter dial. I know it’s homage to the m3/m2 but why?! The bigger dial is just perfect.
I have the black M11 so it felt right to go with silver for the MP - also so I don't get confused ;p Interesting on the smaller shutter dial, I could see that!! TY for watching :)
The sound is ok, there is a bit of room reverb that adds some echoing to your voice - some wall decoration might do the trick. If you don‘t use the light meter on your MP, you can use the ISO dial as a film stock reminder (or a bit of tape on the bottom plate and a sharpie to note the film stock used - that‘s what I did to pick the right camera for a job). You could choose a M4 instead, that has a dial on the back to select film type and ISO :). With your 24mm lens - do you use an external finder or rely on experience to get a proper framing? (I personally find the fast (Summilux) wide angle lenses from Leica - 28 and below - too heavy and bulky for use with my M cameras). Good to see you back - I like your style sharing thoughts with the community which is much different from the typical influencer attitude.
Got it! In the process of packing at this place and it’s a very old building. Thanks for the note on sound. This is a great tip on the iso reminder on the back - I do regularly use this at least! Gets tricky when I’m trying different film stocks though!! I’m not sure I’ve even seen an M4 - I’ve been getting reacquainted with the 24mm and I’ll have to get back to you, especially when I’ll be using it more for weddings this season. Right now, no viewfinder, using live view when needed
great review, thanks for sharing. i am still not yet decide if i want to purchase a Leica MP or not due to the cost of the camera, as well as film is usually more difficult to produce good image quality constantly . might be a Leica m2 is my option
totally get it! i can justify the cost because of my company and the wedding work. anything in the m world is a fun option to explore this film world :) thank you for watching !
Teri! You are my hero! I shared with you that I've recently discovered a great love and passion for 35mm film. I have aL eitz Barnack iiif and an M3. Both are sporting 50mm lenses. And both are Mint. But I recently added the Leica M7 specifically because of the Light Meter. And I want you to know right now that I bought extra batteries. :) I was intimidated for a loooonnnnnngggg time about using an eternal LM. I've gotten more comfortable and daring with my non-LM bodies over time and shoot them every once in a while. But that's only because I just bought into the Leica R system. I've now added the R6.2, the R9 bodies, along with the R 90 f2 APO and R 24 f2.8 Elmarit to my kit. Portra 400. Kodak Gold 200. Ektar 100. Kodak Tri X 400. Fujifilm Acros 100 II, and Ilford HP5. "Stay Safe and Be Blessed." Doc Chaps
Doc Chaps! I needed some extra time to take in your sentiments and write back :) The M3 is a beaut, the M7 is too- I'm so glad we are twins with our 50mm! You really have quite the setup with the Rs, wow! Portra 400 is really hard to top, I need more convincing with Ektar 100. HP5 is wonderful. Excited to keep going and working at the film stuff - it is the most rewarding!
i love my MP and my M7 too , with my m7 being currently in Wetzlar unfortunately, for a finder upgrade to 0.58. i got a Contax G2 if i need AF which is amazing as well. btw just get two LR44 batteries from Amazing, works like a charm in the MP
i've heard wonderful things about contax g2, im curious about it. I added the minilux zoom to my bag and would love to compare the two. thanks for watching - hope you get your m7 back soon!
Hello, Teri. Can you give an advice how to improve focusing with rangefinder when your subject is moving? I use M11 for a couple of months and for me moving subject is a pretty complicated scene for shooting) Maybe you know exercises or techniques
Hi there! Will add this to my list. It is can be challenging to get moving subjects, practice really does help. I think also being realistic that perfect focus just may not happen every time!
I'll be honest, I mainly watch your videos for your amazing smile! Haha, don't worry, it's also for your photo explanations, but often I have to rewind because I get so caught up in your beautiful smile that I forget to listen!😊 by the way I have the same MP but in black.
ahh, this made ME smile - thanks alot for your words and taking the time to watch :) super cool that you have the mp in black! hope you have a wonderful week -t
Congratulations on the M-P. I picked up an M6 TTL last year and haven’t used it much. When I do, I don’t yet feel comfortable loading film in it. That process felt easier with my dearly departed OM-1 and Nikons. Which Summilux-M do you have? I have the 28, 35 FLE I, and the new 50 II. I love them all. I have both the Leica Noctilux-M 75 mm f/1.25 and Voigtländer Nokton 75 mm f/1.5. I love the Leica version, especially on my SL2. However, the Voigtländer, while it only gives up a fraction of a stop, is impressive (and much lighter + smaller).
So glad you took time to watch and to hear that your enjoying your leica things! Pretty sure the M6 TTL was what I also considered. Loading film really has been challenging. I now feel much more comfortable but I’ve likely done closer to 75 rolls through it. I have the summi 50mm & 24mm :) Agreed. I’ve been really happy with the 75mm voigtlander, it’s been a great focal length when I’m regularly using my 50mm alongside it!
@@teribphotography The pre-owned M6-TTL was an impulse buy. I was thinking of getting a much more vintage M, but the one I got looked too cool to pass up (it has a lovely grey leatherette). It has the 0.85x viewfinder, which helps a great deal. What do you think of the Summilux-M 24? I picked up a used Elmar-M 24 mm f/3.8. It’s pretty sharp and a cool focal length. I just got a +2.0 diopter lens for my M11 viewfinder. It allows me to see all the available frame lines now (couldn’t with my glasses on). I’m tempted to get one for my M11 Monochrom. The Voigtländer Nokton 75 is one heck of the lens at an unbeatable price. I’m sure you’ll get a lot of great images with it. It nicely complements my 75 mm f/1.25 and f/2.4 Leica lenses (both purchased used). Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the video. Have you mentioned the camera strap on that MP? Just curious. I'm looking for a couple new straps for my M3's. Keep up the good work.
Do you take both the M11 and the MP on a job and use the M11’s light meter settings to determine your MP’s? Shooting film? Gutsy. Nice mini-bar behind you.
Hi there! Yes, I didn’t quite make my point well there, thanks for mentioning here. When I really need precision I double check settings on the M11. I’ve actually used another MP with the light meter and didn’t always agree with the machine - I prefer shooting f1.4 most of the time and the light meter was always suggesting 5.6!
Just curious, is that a lens filter with brassing on the 75mm? Love voigtlander lenses, I have the 35mm Nokton classic and the 50mm Nokton Vintage for my M6. the 75 would be a great addition.
Yes, it is the filter BW UV Haze - It's an awesome lens. Ah, I bet the 50mm is great for your M6- I'd love to eventually add a 90 and go crazy. Thanks for watching!!
Enjoyed your thoughts on the MP. Using it indoors without a meter is impressive! A few questions: Because the MP and M11 shutter speed dials turn in opposite directions (to either increase or decrease it), do you find it confusing at times to swap between cameras during the same shoot? What flash do you use with the camera? Thanks and keep up the great work!
Hi! thanks so much for checking this out - great questions- Funny enough, I never realized the dials go in opposite directions. I'm slightly dyslexic so maybe it doesn't phase me like others might be. I used the Leica SF 40 Flash - it's brilliant and super fast. Plan on doing a review on it later this summer after a few more film-centric weddings! Appreciate you!
From eye but also experience using manual settings for all of my weddings. Having a film stock you know can perform in variable light is the key. I've used to been nervous with P800 in darker indoor light but know have a stronger understanding of the film and it's limitations. trial and error ;)
I'll never own this camera. I'll likely never shoot film either. Still watched it all the way through haha. Some people just have that personality where you like to listen to them chat about whatever. You're one of those people for sure.
Batteries are LR44. But I do the same you do: meter using experience. For film memory, I cut a piece of the box and placed it in the hot shoe for flash (I never use flash as a street photographer). Thank you for sharing.
some people really have opinions about using the light meter or not. a skilled photog pretty much knows what to do, probably close to 100 rolls of film and nothing but nice results! - great tip on the piece of the box in the hotshoe - appreciate you watching!
From experience! Since day one of shooting weddings I forced myself to use manual settings, I'd like to think I'm pretty skilled. Film throws all kind of things out the window but I've done very well so far! Thanks for watching Rich!
Haha - I did lots and lots of practice on personal work before going into paid film wedding work. It's a matter of knowing how to comfortably use the m system settings manually. Appreciate you watching :)
@@teribphotography That, and the way you caught the couple in that magical pocket of golden light. Stunning location too. They must have loved this one. ❤
I guess I disagree! Meter in camera body, a super convenience! Any M2,M4 M4-2, M4-P would work equally well. Save major money! I use M3, that I've used for 57 years! I prefer 50mm. Using film in a wedding, bad idea! Using Film with digital, a lot smarter. My opinion! Bravo!
Totally fine Jason, appreciate you taking the time to share - in the past I found that the light meter often pushed me to 5.6 and i didn't love the photos, it's a big reason why I tend to disregard it. I love using film for weddings, it is such a unique way to storytell - I'm always using my digital too of course :) Thank you again!

Even if you didn't like the Leica, you wouldn't regret it anyway, it's a Leica.😂 I don't know how easy it is to find batteries for the Leica M-P in your country, but there's always the option of getting one of those old-school hot shoe external light meters.🙃
Hahaha great advice and so true - leica is one of a kind, for better or pocketbook worse! i feel like if i've gone this long maybe i'll never get a proper battery lol
? okay! I'm a little confused! I had one MP for a few weeks and there was a shutter issue, the light meter worked in that one. The last year I haven't used the light meter, it's never had a battery. Oh darn if that's your deal breaker!
Wow! Your wow! What a fantastic short review on the MP, thanks for sharing. ❤

I hear excellent things about the M6 - the black MP is also so nice! Thanks for tuning in :)
Love the channel and your reviews keep the good work up.
Feel fortunate you would stop in - thanks so much for checking it out!
I am so sorry, but I am gonna say it again.... Mamacita 😍
Very talented, and you have a Leica!
Thank you so much!!
I went with black :>
The only slight annoyance I found on the mp (coming from an m7/m10) is the smaller shutter dial. I know it’s homage to the m3/m2 but why?! The bigger dial is just perfect.
Chrome is class. Really nice.
I have the black M11 so it felt right to go with silver for the MP - also so I don't get confused ;p Interesting on the smaller shutter dial, I could see that!! TY for watching :)
it is all the retro vibes and class - we agree!!
I’m thrilled you would tune in, thanks for the encouragement!!
I preferred a M7, its just so identical to my M10 shooting practice 😊
M7 battery is weird too !
Ahh, M7 just sounds cool too - James Bond-esque :) love it!
great review, thanks for sharing. i am still not yet decide if i want to purchase a Leica MP or not due to the cost of the camera, as well as film is usually more difficult to produce good image quality constantly . might be a Leica m2 is my option
totally get it! i can justify the cost because of my company and the wedding work. anything in the m world is a fun option to explore this film world :) thank you for watching !
Wetzlar will swap out the finder for a different magnification?
@@tofulosophy yes of course. its not cheap though. about 1k euro with a full CLA
@@MarcS4R good to know, thanks!
i've heard wonderful things about contax g2, im curious about it. I added the minilux zoom to my bag and would love to compare the two. thanks for watching - hope you get your m7 back soon!
Love that you post more often here. 😊 /Daviden
Really trying to be better about it! To do a good job these take time!! Thanks David!!
@@teribphotography 😊 idem
Hi..I have a black MP..Both are nice..What made you choose silver?
I have a black M11 and wanted do go different. The silver feels retro to me! The black looks awesome too
Congratulations on the M-P.
I have the summi 50mm & 24mm :)
Agreed.
Hi Teri, if you had it to do over would you get the black paint instead of the silver?
Hi there! My M11 is black so I wanted this one to be a little different ;)
Love your MP! You could just use your hot shoe as a film holder :)
This.
Great idea! Gets a little tricky if I use flash but I do like this- thanks for watching!!
@@teribphotographyWhat flash do you normally use with your Leicas?
Thanks for the video. Have you mentioned the camera strap on that MP? Just curious. I'm looking for a couple new straps for my M3's. Keep up the good work.
I have not mentioned the strap - it’s a nice one I picked up from the Leica store in LA- I need a new one for my m11 badly!
Good eye on the mini bar - nice to have it close when putting these videos together lol :)
Stunning camera
thanks for looking :)
the most beautiful camera in the world (and also nikon f2 titan). I have M4 but I want MP too. You don't hurt the chrome with the belt clip ring?
The M4 is so pretty! My MP goes through the ringer, all kinds of body scratches and such - well loved I say :) thanks for checking it out!
Thanks for the great video.
oh so happy you would take time to watch :)
A few questions:
Because the MP and M11 shutter speed dials turn in opposite directions (to either increase or decrease it), do you find it confusing at times to swap between cameras during the same shoot? What flash do you use with the camera? Thanks and keep up the great work!
Hi! thanks so much for checking this out - great questions- Funny enough, I never realized the dials go in opposite directions. I'm slightly dyslexic so maybe it doesn't phase me like others might be. I used the Leica SF 40 Flash - it's brilliant and super fast. Plan on doing a review on it later this summer after a few more film-centric weddings! Appreciate you!
So you just meter by eye? Any tricks for when the light is variable indoors?
From eye but also experience using manual settings for all of my weddings. Having a film stock you know can perform in variable light is the key. I've used to been nervous with P800 in darker indoor light but know have a stronger understanding of the film and it's limitations. trial and error ;)
@@teribphotography I'll definitely practice and try more. Thanks!
@@RomanatorII :)
I'll never own this camera. I'll likely never shoot film either. Still watched it all the way through haha. Some people just have that personality where you like to listen to them chat about whatever. You're one of those people for sure.
You win for kindest words. THANK YOU SOOOOOOO much :)
HA! Can't run out of batteries if you never put one in!! that's brilliant! Love it.
Haha not super proud of it but I just kept shooting and kept loving the photos! 😂😅
Place the film reminder on the hot shoe. 💐
it's so tiny!! but great tip
If you dont use the meter, are you using a handheld meter, or mettering from experience?
From experience! Since day one of shooting weddings I forced myself to use manual settings, I'd like to think I'm pretty skilled. Film throws all kind of things out the window but I've done very well so far! Thanks for watching Rich!
interesting that you pick MP but not MA if you don't use the lightmeter
i think at the time the mp was available, the MA wasn't on my radar
amazing photos. I like your atmospheric style!
appreciate you - it's always hard to pick which ones go best with the video!
So how can you make a picture without any sort of light meter? Really enjoyed your video though…
the camera still takes photos without a light meter, it can be risky if you aren't familiar with manual settings. appreciate you elliot!
Fun video. But, shooting a wedding without taking meter readings is in a class of its own!!!
Haha - I did lots and lots of practice on personal work before going into paid film wedding work. It's a matter of knowing how to comfortably use the m system settings manually. Appreciate you watching :)
😍😍🤩🤩🤩🤩
:)
I see a lot of Manhattan ingredients behind you!
Haha oldfashioned way of living 😅😂 thanks for watching!!
6 mths into my M6 and loving it. Great post. Follow me on IG @grainandaperture.
awesome to hear! Love your pics James, following along!
MP is a beautiful camera, bourbon and cigars?
Haha whiskey and bourbon! No cigars here - good eye, thanks for watching (:
@@teribphotography you're welcome
8:27 Davey!
Haha! Such a nice flare at the observatory 🥰

That's a lucky Leica ; )
:)
Even if you didn't like the Leica, you wouldn't regret it anyway, it's a Leica.😂
I don't know how easy it is to find batteries for the Leica M-P in your country, but there's always the option of getting one of those old-school hot shoe external light meters.🙃
Hahaha great advice and so true - leica is one of a kind, for better or pocketbook worse! i feel like if i've gone this long maybe i'll never get a proper battery lol
You said the word "camera" ten times in the first two minutes but you never used the word "photography".
It’s a video about a camera!
@@teribphotography I own a Leica Q2 and I love it but it's just a tool. People make too much about the camera and not enough about the photography.
your audio isn't good
I need to explore with a mic I guess, thanks for the feedback - sorry you didn't enjoy
Actually if you have any recommendations that would be awesome - I definitely hear it very well on just half volume
You voice comes in loud and clear. He might be referring to what sounds like a fridge buzzing in the background? And bit of echo maybe.
Your first video you said you trusted the light meter?
Just subscribed watching your previous videos and now will unsubscribe after this video
? okay! I'm a little confused! I had one MP for a few weeks and there was a shutter issue, the light meter worked in that one. The last year I haven't used the light meter, it's never had a battery. Oh darn if that's your deal breaker!
