Matt, I love what you do here. I enjoy all your videos. I own in 20 years 2xM2, M3, 2M4-2, M4p, 2xM6, M6J, , 2xMP, 2xMa, 3 M7 . except for the M7 they will all do the same picture as it a a LEItz CAmera so a hole for a leitz lens with a timer soft curtain . (M7 is electronically timed so is always more precise and has infinite speed… but not repearable ). so the difference between all ? clarity of the telemeter, practicity, flash, easy rewinding, easy cocking . in all of these 16 M film cameras I only keep the leica M4-2 wich is the best and the beast : nearly as clear as an M3, strong as an M2,m but easy to load, black as an M4 pro, recess windows like it should be and stronger black chrome ( my main reason to sold my two Ma and two MP is that I was bored to clean finger marks like all new leica on telemeter window and the bad black chrome (Ma) or the too shiny black paint Mp) . the M4-2 is stronger as it is made in canada with super high quality control ( new factory, new train guys, machine who were re-ajusted when send from germany) and gears build for the harsh canadian motor ! but wait… it is not end , telemeter in the M4-2 is the clearest and is completed and square with no bull shit other lens limit in it ( uncluttered ) if you use 35mm ( yes bottom line frame of M6 and Mp are cut). I don’t like M6… too fragile electronics, blury telemeter, buble on paint and who need today an internal light meter ! guys learn, incidental light, or spot meter will help you . Sekonic L208 is magic. learn zone system, and today we can push +2/-2 and if you scan , again +2f so total you could be 4f stop down. internal light meter were made for slides… everybody were doing slide in the 80’s with very small f latitude … today nobody is doing it. 10 other secret reason to prove that the M4-2 is the best M line : 1) vulcanite is stronger and will not unglue 2) door allow you to write wich brand and type of film is in it. 3) no red badge 4) cool leitz stamp embossed on top 5) hot flash socket 6) save the M and Leica 7) not build by german ! 8) it is a leitz, it’s write 9) still screw to access to the telemeter setting like classic 10) nice screw button to remove lens, not a red dot Ok you understand …I love my M4-2 , sale the other ones and I hate 28mm lens ( no 28mm frame in it) but I am a bit afraid that price go up… so guys buy M6
Thanks and thanks for your strong argument for the M4-2. As someone that spends his life writing/ talking about your cameras I was interested by your alternative views to mine. I'm not a fan of the M4 advance lever (like on my M4-Ps) (See last night's video). I think my M4-P has some common features with M4-2 (we know them). I like my M4-P but I'm not sure I would keep it over the M-A, M3 etc. (MA update video coming soon!)
@@jasongold6751 there's a million things that can wrong with any camera, 80's cameras with electronics non coated lens elements in old lens yadda yadda yadda. doesn't take away from a well looked after and regularly serviced M3 being the epitome of excellence in design, manufacture and operation.
@@jasongold6751 it can fail. But it also is repairable by Re cementing it. I have an M3 and it is very nice. Until you want to use a 35mm or wider lens. So it depends on what lens you want to use.
Absolutely love my Leica MP - the build, feel, simplicity and black paint❤. I bought mine new a few years ago and have had no issues. Considering the price and QC issues that have been reported with the digital Leicas - I’ll take a user error jammed roll any day. 🤗
Hi Matt! As a faithful reader of your vids and as a devotee off the M3 since 1980 I want to note tangentially that RUclips has become a marketer for everything Leica, and a cousin of eBay and Amazon. The clear implication of most of the Leica vids (I counted about a dozen today) that turn up is: you cannot hope to take a fine photograph without a Leica. I enjoy your vids because they are instructive in Leica use and I trust that you cab steer clear of this Leica sales mania!
Thanks Jeremy! We all know you can take a great photo with a £50 Minolta too so yes I try to give fair reviews for whatever I share. Leica don't pay me anything so I say it as it is (like for all brands I review).
Very, very nice to know about ACR and their ability to repair the light meters in the M6 cameras. I am glad you found about this both for yourself and the rest of the community. This is a very nice video presentation. Thanks
I had two Leica M6 cameras. Unfortunately, in both of them the rangefinder mirrors needed cleaning after a few years and in one the light meter broke. As a result, I was left with a Leica M4-P, of course black.
I m a big fan of 28mm. I shoot it on my FM3a and my GR1s and sorta like 28 on my Fuji GA645wi. I shoot probably 70% at 28mm and the rest at 50mm and 20mm split. I have thought about a M camera for years but the range finder and magnifications put me off. The M3 I read is perfect for 50mm and accuracy….. are the 0.72 finders OK for 28mm? Or should I look for a 0.58 finder? If so can I even shoot 50mm with a 0.58 finder? I mostly zone focus as huge dept of field is my thing (street). So far I am struggling to find a reason to justify getting an M given my preference for 28mm...
I opted for the MP, because of the improved optics for focusing and it’s less flashy look. The built-in light meter is handy, especially when it only suggests. I often forget to turn the camera to off, but my batteries last for ages. The automatic sleep mode seems to work fine. I don’t like the plastic two part advance lever of the 6. But rewinding on the MP is a bore. Not enough reason to switch to a 6 and try to look like a pro or millionaire.
I am shooting with my M4-P, M1, M3, IIIg and an Barnack III. I tested also a M-A and I can truely say: The old M3 has the better mechanical feeling and Sound for me. Sure the IIIg is another world, like the III from 1937. I love the M4-P, she is light andis a working horse. But the M3: I can feel and hear the old perfection in this Lady. I am looking forward for your next repaired M6 Video👍📷🍀
hey Matt- we'll pass around the hat- so you can buy a clip for the microphone....... MP here and the MA and the M3..... agree- the M3 feels the best in my hand- not sure why- solid like a rock..... love using the different 50mm Voigtlander and LLL lenses on the M3..... hope to be on the next call... take care my friend
My M2 is soooo good to use. Added a Keks light meter. The build quality is exceptional, a photo tank! Got several M's but the M2 is my favourate film camera!
Matt, if you like to test something; next to my Leica i have a GFX. The GFX set to 6x7 using m-mount lenses = almost no vignet. 16bit colour/grey tones.
Thanks for this feed back ... After a lot of thought, I ended up taking an M7 for efficiency and a IIIf for fun. But it’s the M10-P that remains my everyday camera. The M7's lightmeter and the A mode are game-changers. For the IIIf, my lightmeter is a wet finger in the air 😅 or at least an iPhone app
My 40 years old M6 meter works great! Given the $$ that people are asking for an M6 (I would never sell), €500 to €800 for a new light meter circuit if ever needed seems like a great deal! Take care, Matt!! Love your work and your channel!!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I have been a photographer since 1975 - when I was not quite 11 years old. And I am NOT (and never have been a pro), but a “serious” amateur “avocationalist” who has way too much film and digi kit. I ran my own darkroom from 11 onward, having a load of fun!! Nikon and Leica glass and a couple M3 bodies along with my M6, F2 as, F3’s, F4’s, and beloved FE-2, make me shoot film and enjoy it a lot!! The Nikons digis and Leica M9’s (new sensors that make pretty nice film like images!) are also fun, but I always will use and love my film shooting. You are inspirational and so very technically helpful! Keep doing what you do!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 And don’t write off all of us yanks bc of the rump. Many of us in the “opposition to” are horrified. Love your work and your sharing!!
I've had 3 modern MPs in my life (all BP). First one in 29xxxxx serial range, which is from the first batch back in 2003. I also had one in 39xxxxx range briefly. Both had some mechanical issues needed to be fixed (they were bought used). 1st one was never as smooth as the M2 and M3 I've had even after a CLA, and 2nd one was returned after I discovered a shutter issue. I now have a brand new one in 59xxxxx serial range, which I believe is from the very latest batch. This one is as smooth as the smoothest M I've used in 15+ years, and so far zero issues after running a dozen rolls. Still too small data sample to really tell anything, but it is encouraging the latest batch is feeling the best of three.
Interesting observations, as my own experience has been different. Have owned an M6, M6J, M6TTL, M7, and four MPs over the past 20 years. While I regret selling the M6J, I have always preferred the MPs to the M6, M6TTL and M7 largely because of the brass housing, old style advance lever and smoother film advance. However, my newer BP MP in the 59xxxxx range just isn’t as smooth as the earlier 0.58 A La carte, 0.85 Ralph Gibson or ‘plain Jane’ chrome 0.72 MP all in the #300xxx serial range, nor does it feel as well built. Perhaps the supposedly plastic parts in newer versions are having an influence here. Either way, it is my older black 0.58 and chrome 0.72 version of the MP that i have held on to as the rest of my film Ms have slowly found new homes.
Hi Matt super Leica video thanks. On the positive side now you have tried the MP ourself.Thats the way to go.The older cameras got a special feeling.I am happy with my M4 the only Leica i own and the Nikon FM2n.Take care 😊
@@JanivarNorbeck I like my M3 and M4, I honestly would have been happy just having the M4, but previously had the M3 CLA’ed. Nothing like the early Leica!
I have gotten the same reports from repair guys about plastic parts inside current Leicas. I know that plastic can be quite serviceable. In a Leica I expect better. No longer a precise item of pride aimed at professionals and really serious amateurs but now more a consumer item and bling. I keep thinking that Leica can do better. So I'd say you did it right. Better to repair a solid older camera than put up with the ones with cheaper insides. When the repairmen caution you it is wise to take heed. I see that you cannot escape the Eureka. ;o) Lovely lens, thanks for that one.
No comparison. The new MP is coated and doesn’t flair unlike the M3’s. The M2’s viewfinder is also more flair resistant than the M3’s making focusing much easier
Modern finders look clearer and more contrast from the few I’ve seen but it will depend on each camera condition. Layout better on M3, clarity better on MP/MA etc. all mentioned have the condenser so don’t have issues of M4-P, M6 etc.
It's my sign to get M3 for $1500 and not wait until I get $6000 for MP 😂😂😂 Also I'll get Voigtlander lenses for 1/5 of sumilux price 😂😂😂 This video is gift from the Gods🎉🎉🎉🎉
I have a silver MP and we share the first five numbers on the serial. I'm also 46664XX. I got the MP after selling my M6 TTL. I have two other film cameras, Nikon FM2n and a Minolta CLE. Seriously considering getting a Bessa R3M.
I've had an M6 classic for about 16 years - I tried an MA and an MP and weirdly the MA felt a bit hollow, and the black MP just felt delicate because of the gloss paint. In the end I bought the M6 reissue, and I love it. Apart from it needed to be returned after failing within a month. I also have an IIIa which is great. It's funny I dreamt of and MP to go with my M6 for years but, I dunno, just felt a bit more showy than the utilitarian M6.
Hi Matt, interesting what you are saying. I have owned the amazing M3 and it is the best film "quality" range finder I have owned, but I sold it. I found it did not entirely give me the flexibility I wanted in a range finder. Flexibility in the sense of the focal length of lenses I can use in combination with the M3. I have primarily been a 50mm type of photographer. But over time it seems my style of photography has changed and leaning now towards 28mm focal length for street photography. I previously did hardly any street photography and more portraits, hence why I owned the M3. I realise you can get adaptors or parts to enable you to use other focal lengths on the M3, but that seemed pointless to me. So I opted to buy the M4-P and I also do not require a light meter. However, the M-P seemed to tickle my fancy and so I purchased the black paint one - like the brassing effect. I have never looked back. It allows me to use most lenses and I guess having a warranty or it being brand new makes me feel more comfortable. And I still own the M4-P but it needed to be CLA'd and prior to being serviced it was a little unreliable and I was missing some cool photograph opportunities. I use the M-P a great deal now and have the M4-P as a sort of back up. The M10 is the only digital camera I own and I really enjoy using it when I get the chance. I am extremely happy with what I have now and play around with different lenses. I had looked at the classic M6, but with a few of my friends complaining they can not repair or change the broken light meter seriously put me off. That is why I purchased the M-P. But I am glad to see the light meter issue has been resolved. My Leica friends are surprised I bought a M-P and not the M-A being a true analogue camera - but I reply each to their own! I am sticking to my guns and keeping the M-P, as it performs to exactly what I need it to and the built in light meter is plus if I ever need it. Great video mate and it is always good to listen to other peoples opinions and advice. Good day from down under.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom From which Leica UK shop did you purchase the purported MP? Such a shop or reseller will loose money, buying back the camera as a now second hand item. Your story does not seem plausible, a little like using a ‘friend’s private jet’, to go somewhere.
I really don't understand why you needed another Leica M film camera or M digital for that matter? I am also not sure why Leica is insisting on passing the MP as the pinnacle of engineering? As fine a camera that the MP is, an M3 of nearly 60 years ago is just as mechanically perfect as the MP. Perhaps a more contrasty RF window or the ability to take a wide angle lenses natively are the bonus points, but for me the M3 and the M2 are still the king. PS: In the old times the original Leitz which was a family business manufcatured cameras like the M2 and the M3 knowing that they would probably end up being used by war correspondents, photo Journalist, even fashion photographers on the go and these people seriously punished the camera and the lens. That is why these were made of top quality brass & steel. These days Leica is owned by a Venture company and something else, and Leica cameras are mostly manufactured as fashion and statement cameras, I am sad to say. Even the modern Leica lenses that cost several thousand pounds are no where near as well built as the something like a Summicron Rigid or Summicron DR of over 50 years ago. So, cherish your old Leitz cameras.
@@Stickybutton It always was a ' luxurious ' manufacturer, its products were well out of the range of most people, but that is how they wanted it and that is why the quality of the product was so important. Now they want to sell to everyone, even though they are still expensive, but the difference is that the profit generated now goes to the shareholder rather than being reinvested back in the company. I have read that they removed the error log code from the firmware of M11 because it was causing so much problem for the company. They did the same thing after the M8 and with M9 removed the shutter count code from the firmware so no one could complain why their shutters died prematurely!!!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaComalso if the shutter is not cocked, the meter on the M6 and MP is off and won't drain. If you use a soft release, you probably don't want to be in the habit of immediately cocking the shutter after a shot anyway unless you're just about to take a shot, to avoid accidental exposures.
Matt when will you stop buying and returning your M cameras :) ? What you like in Leica M are the lenses not the bodies. So just buy a Nikon Zf and an adapter for M mount and you will enjoy it. You also have a black and white button with 3 profiles to make b&w very comfortably. I am,sure you will love it.
I'm also torn between the 1957 Elmar 50mm f/2.8, Voigtlander Color Skopar 50mm f/2.2, Summicron 50mm V4 and the Thypoch Eureka... Looking for a small travel 50mm that doesn't break the bank. I want it to be sharp at f/5.6 and it has to be light and easy to use. I rather dislike the idea of a non-clicked aperture ring on the Eureka. But the Color Skopar 50mm f/2.2 really seems to be a bit contrasty on film (?). What is your opinion and what would you get out of those three? I shoot film but I am planning to get a digital M in a couple years.
Im currently using the LEICA ELMAR 50mm f/2.8 (1957-1974) on both the m3 and the m10m and it’s a fantastic little lens, decent sharpness wide open and when stopped down provides great sharpness across the frame. It has the infinity tab, which I enjoy, aperture is a little finicky. Very compact when retracted on the m3. Can be retracted on the m10 however I leave it out
You're right, Leica film cameras are just boxes. Its all about the glass. I have a chrome MP and a black M6TTL. The MP is for BW film and the M6 is for color film. I do like the hefty feel of the MP though but I did just send it in for a CLA and to repair the film counter. Apparently the MP film counter uses a plastic nylon gear that is prone to wearing out. I recently picked up an M10 that has become my walk around camera but in hindsight I should not have bought the M10. I find I dont enjoy the digital Leica experience as much as I do film but the M10 is handy when lighting conditions are constantly changing or if shooting in low light. I have my eye on the Q3 43 and may trade in the M10 to get that.
Ok … would love someone to actually prove this plastic parts rumour…as for the older ms feeling smoother…. Older M have brass bearings and the Mp have Steel….they do settle down and get smother in time .. End of day you pays your money.. you take your choice…
@ again I would like someone to prove this thing about cheaper materials … it’s bull .. I think there’s enough M repair experts out there that have striped Mp /ma and even the new M6 .. and I think if they had found something bad it would be all over the net … Yes I know the old M6 gad a plastic film counter and a plastic tip on film advance.. and zinc top plate ..those days are long over ..
After having used a Leica M2 from the 1960s to very recent times, I have had a difficult time warming up to M5, M6, etc. The nuance feel and operation of the M2 & M3 is enough different to make the original cameras just different in a good way.
Good on Leica that they still produce film cameras! People who think that used cameras are defective by nature, or are covered in germs, or are only for those who can't afford buying new will take up the offer. (Of course, also youtubers who must review them on their channel.) But, as you noticed, the new cameras are at best clones of Leica's classical line-up. In a way, they actually don't operate as nicely (smoothly) as the old cameras. There is a simple reason: Gears need some time to develop a perfect mesh. Brass gears (as in the M3 and M2) do that nicely; steel gears (M4, MP, M6) take much longer and will never mesh as smoothly as brass. (So you should have given your new MP at least 20 yrs of service!) The original MP ("P" for press) was designed for heavy duty, including the use of motor drives. Steel gears make good sense for that . The new MP has steel gears not in order to cater for the needs of press photographers but, I suppose, to save costs. --- BTW, that slanted rewing crank is one of the silliest innovation ever to enter the M-world. The straight crank will never break, the slanted thing is a delicate contraption. What you should never do with it: rewind as fast as you can. But that was precisely the idea when introducing it! 🤥 Of course, the new M6 wouldn't be a copy of the old one without repeating this piece of (bad) overengineering.
I have yet to shoot an M camera of any type, but I agree that the Barnacks are just sooooo smooth, and, well, satisfying to shoot. That lovely soft *snick*.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Yeah with how much you enjoy and have practice with using the barnacks and pre light meter Ms I just assumed the MP would be a rather pointless purchase past experiencing the build quality and lever feel.
I was very disappointed with my new MP. First arrived with a very stiff ISO dial, repaired under warranty. One year later the meter stopped working, so I returned it to be told the MP would to be sent away to Germany and would be away for quite some time or I could have my money back. I got the refund.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom You don't expect a meter to pack up working on what was then a £4100.00 camera in less than a year. Still, I've got my MP typ 240, although my Summicron 35mm now needs repair, the front filter bezel is lose. For film photography, I've gone back to my Nikon's.
I had a lovely M3, loved it but I’m convinced M film cameras are better suited to shoot 35mm… so I moved on and I now have a black MA and a Zeiss 35mm lens and I rarely shoot 50mm with it. It genuinely feels quite awkward to shoot 50mm on an MA. If you are a 50mm shooter I do think the M3 is quite complimentary so it makes a lot of sense to have 2 separate bodies and get rid of the MP
Matt this is great news about the circuit boards. Is this specifically for the Classic M6? That’s the non TTL correct? Still trying to familiarize myself with the versions. So this gives me peace of mind to buy a used M6 knowing the meter is replaceable.
If money no object, and i'd be wealthy enough - i'd choose the MP into black, because it's without the infamous red dot, which i dislike seriously, second, it does have the integrated lightmeter, vs the M-A, and last, but not least - every lame duck on YT nowadays uses the M6, and plays poseur around. 🙂 No social insecurities - just what i've seen during the past 5+ years, because these guys into their 20's haven't being grown up with film, for real. I am settled, and happy with my old 35mm rangefinders, SLRs, and digital gear. I always enjoy your videos, Matt...and especially like the fact, that you answering comments, since ages here on your channel. 🙂
Still feels the most tactile and great toy to have and keep. Till M11 came about. Sold off my last of last film M collection and never looked back since the bloody costs of film is now off the roof!
My KANTO M - 3 ; is better than my MA Leica by far , even the older film loading style I prefer as it is positive , and the film draws up firmly and predictably with no " SQUISH " feel in the tensioner / Film frame counter. M - 3 was the best , I do not know anything about Barnack Leica's .
Reason No6 Matt I think that black circular dot on the front (is it the battery port) is just ugly, it spoils the front design of the camera, perhaps if they had recessed the circle so it matched the red dot on your M4-P ie being flat would have been more in keeping with the design.
Hey Matt, The older MP with the shark skin in silver (apart from the bolder script on the top plate) is a little underwhelming cosmetically As I have both, I can say that if you bought the latest black paint MP you would immediately see and feel different between the difference compared to your other black or silver chrome cameras Anyhow all the very best regards, Ron
Will you be making a video on the canteener edc bags? Judging by what you said it's replaced the smaller pilot bags as your go-to small walkaround bag.
Not a full video as too niche but I’ll add a piece to the bag blog post when I get time. Pilot is better for wet weather, EDC smaller and lighter for travel but less secure as no top flap. I still use pilots too when I need those things. EDC is better for summer use.
Matt, would it be possible for You to make an interview with any technician that claims that old M3 are better build than today’s MPs? It’s interesting point to make ;) and also considering the age of M3. I always thought that You can expect less problems with newer film Leica equipment…
Someone already commented one weakness of modern Ms, plastic gear replaces metal for frame counter. Yes I want to ask too do we know quite how different the cameras are now.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I think that replacing it with plastic does not always have to mean something worse - maybe this solution works better? It's hard for me to say. I don't want to do "what if" ;) That's why it would be nice to hear the opinion of someone with a reputation for repairing and servicing these cameras. I also find it interesting that many great photographers who could buy any M choose the MP *perhaps because of the rangefinder frames? Anyway, I would love to hear the opinion of a professional service technician - I'm giving you an idea for a video Matt :)
Yes all shops give a return policy. You can’t check in the hand when buy online so they will expect some returns, especially used items without a sealed box.
The MP seems like it's only especially worth it if you MUST have a meter and you don't already have a film M with that style viewfinder. My M4-2 is perfectly suitable for me (28mm frame lines are kind of redundant, that's just more or less the angle of view of the entire window) in that regard and frankly I do not think $3-4k extra is worth a meter. I also agree with the general notion that the M3 ergonomics are just not as easy to use as the M4-onwards ergonomics. I love my M3, but it does feel like an older and more antiquated piece of technology that isn't as refined for a person to use comfortably.
I have owned most of the leica film Ms and the only one I kept over the years is the Leica m3. I do miss my m6ttl .85. I had the m-a and it was great. The m4 is probably the best all around classic. The m7 I always killed the battery by leaving it on and when you killed the batter on the m7 you killed double the amount of lr44 batterys as the m6/mp. The m4-2 was good but did feel cheeper. I have never had either m4-p or the m5. Id be weary to get an m5 because of roller issues in the shutter. I am currently looking for another leica m2. (would love to find a M2R)
I bought the new Leica M6 and when out shooting the battery cover fell off and I lost it I sent an email to Leica… man these guys don’t give a sh*t. No response for a week now, 3 emails and a call I also shoot professionally with Leica and I have to say I love the cameras but their CS is AWFUL
All the new film Ms - MP, M-A, M6 (and the discontinued M7) use a plastic gear in the film counter mechanism. Which will eventually break. And has in mine. Easy to fix but still about a $200 repair, but the previous Ms had that gear made out of metal. These cameras are now $6000 new, so why this cost cutting? For $6000 you'd think everything was made as good as possible.
sorry wrong. from tummydoc Actually, the plastic film counter disk, appear in M4-2 and still present in the M7 and MP, was never the part which failed nor was it the cause of the failure of the film counter to reset correctly. When the counter was redesigned with the plastic disk, each hit of the disk as it resets serves to un-thread it. Leica has since affixed it with an anticlockwise thread which solved the problem. Inexpert repairpeople sorting older M6s often simply replace it with an old-stock part, in which case the issue resurfaces. Expert repairpeople tap the reverse thread and install the new part.
Hi Matt, first: thanks for your content and advice. Based partially on your videos, I added both a Barnack iiic and a double-stroke M3 this year (both had been recently serviced by DAG here in the States and I got both of them from a great shop near me: Blue Moon Camera). I wonder: do you develop and scan your own film? I hadn't done that for 50 years and decided to get set-up to do so again. Truth be told, it's somewhat of a pain and I'd rather shoot digital. I suspect all of your (or most of) your model shoots are digital. Most of my shoots are birds and as such I lean more on a 300mm prime with either a 1.4 or 2x TC and as you're probably aware the 400mm and 500mm Leitz lenses cost a pretty penny). I wonder how many Leicas you own? I appreciate the fact that you felt the need to own the MP in order to write about it. I suspect your brand requires that level of commitment. It would be great to make a living with photography. Luckily I no longer need to make a living and I can sit back and live off the interest. It's early afternoon here in the gray and wet Pacific Northwest and your Bye-Bye video has been up about 4 hours or so. Hope you have a great week! - Gary
Leica stopped making cameras for photojournalists and started making cameras for rich dudes. Yeah, I'm one of those too. But I only use Leica because of their old lenses. Otherwise I'd buy a Fuji)
Hint: someone carrying around many specialized Leica cameras worth several thousands each is not "relatable". ;) That said, I do love my 2020 Leica MP with my 50mm Summilux ASPH. :)
Aargh! I have the Wotancraft pilot bag and a couple of the original add ons, but they're too big. Love the new ones in your video cos they're smaller, but that fluffy bit to add a patch? Sorry, but I'm not a 13 year old.
Whoa! You are recommending that people by a 1953 Leica M3 over a brand new Leica M-A? An M-3 is 71 years old! Metal fatigue results from thousands (and thousands) of cycles of loading - like a cheap paperclip fails after 20 cycles. Pin holes in your shutter curtain can occur after one afternoon of leaving you camera face up in the sun with no lens cap. Repaired shutters - as opposed to replaced shutters - can fail after one afternoon in a hot car trunk. Old cameras have unique problems.
I'm baffled as to why the Digital Leicas cost more than the analogue Leicas, gears and mechanical stuff I would think are more complicated to make than a couple of resisters and a dioed soldered onto a board, by a machine, like another manufacturer.
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I worked for a company that made circuit boards and had five circuit board making machines, at a million pound each. They worked as fast as they could and even though we made huge quantities of electronic " things" we struggled to get components to feed the beasts, the usual suspects took the lions share of components, the car industry, Apple etc and we were way down the list. Making electronic stuff is easy, getting hold of the raw materials, that's the challenge.
I mean how many Leica's does a man need ? (answer : one more than you already have). Probably the right choice to send it back - this things aren't exactly bargain basement and that's quite a load of cash just sitting around........Awesome news about the M6 light meter board - mines still OK but will no doubt crap out at some point just when I really need it lol
I heard from Don Goldberg of DAG that Leica now has a new supply of light meter circuit boards for the M6. It's true that not so long ago, if the light meter broke, it couln't be fixed.
As a past M6 Classic owner and a current MP BP and M7 owner I have never had a single issue with any of them other then accidentally burning a hole in my shutter on the M6 many years ago. With all that being said at the end of the day the MP/M6 Reissue is in fact a better camera as it is still being made and is serviceable fully via Leica and third party techs, for this reason alone it is a better camera as it will last, and be serviceable for a longer period of time. Most of your 5 points are a little, well, pointless especially when it comes to longevity of serviceability of "forever" camera bodies.
Thanks for your thoughts. As you’ll know apart from the electronics that fail in the older M6s etc all they are mechanical so can always be fixed. It doesn’t matter if 1930s or 2024s. So yes the points are valid for me. It’s only the electronic shutter cameras that become bricks - M7, Contax G, Xpan etc etc .
He is finding his way in Leica M world. There was great resistance to the Leica M3 when it was introduced. He is not old enough to have been there. He still Makes quite beautiful images. As they say, ‘some can; some can not’.
I am afraid that the flaws of the camera resides between your ears and not inside the M P 😂 Just another thing. A view videos ago you were trying to anonimise your M10 by removing the red dot but now you are showin a classic M6 with red dot, a red shutter release button and to top it of, a red cord 😅😊 Time to get professional help. 🥳😜
Haha fair point. In my defence for model shoots red anything is fine, for street I prefer stealth. The M6 came out of retirement to go to ACR for new meter so it’s in its original state from years ago when I bought it.
10 other secret reason to prove that the M4-2 is the best M line :
1) vulcanite is stronger and will not unglue
2) door allow you to write wich brand and type of film is in it.
3) no red badge
4) cool leitz stamp embossed on top
5) hot flash socket
6) save the M and Leica
7) not build by german !
8) it is a leitz, it’s write
9) still screw to access to the telemeter setting like classic
10) nice screw button to remove lens, not a red dot
Ok you understand …I love my M4-2 , sale the other ones and I hate 28mm lens ( no 28mm frame in it)
but I am a bit afraid that price go up… so guys buy M6
Thanks and thanks for your strong argument for the M4-2. As someone that spends his life writing/ talking about your cameras I was interested by your alternative views to mine. I'm not a fan of the M4 advance lever (like on my M4-Ps) (See last night's video). I think my M4-P has some common features with M4-2 (we know them). I like my M4-P but I'm not sure I would keep it over the M-A, M3 etc. (MA update video coming soon!)
The M3 is sublime perfection. Never needed another Leica.
Yes! M3 is great for sure!
That and a Hasselblad 500cm
They are very old and balsam glue could fail, in viewfinder!
Great! Mine was older with the shark skin finish. Stay tuned, more to come on my M story.
And always enjoying the mid production years M3 single stroke. Curious about an old, Barnack screw mount … very curious.
M3 are great ..but so are Barnacks! Especially the older ones (nicer shutter sound)
Thanks
Thanks, a kind followers wrote to me to tell me so all thanks to him.
I had two Leica M6 cameras. Unfortunately, in both of them the rangefinder mirrors needed cleaning after a few years and in one the light meter broke. As a result, I was left with a Leica M4-P, of course black.
Sorry to hear. You can now get M6 meters fixed, see a video coming soon as I had the same issue.
Yes M with 28 is great. Zone focus and it’s so fast, 0.72 is fine unless you wear glasses then maybe hard to see framelines.
@@devroombagchus7460 congrats! The MP is great but I thought if I wanted the dream camera i’d get the M-A. You’ll see an update video soon.
Thanks and nice cameras!
hey Matt- we'll pass around the hat- so you can buy a clip for the microphone....... MP here and the MA and the M3..... agree- the M3 feels the best in my hand- not sure why- solid like a rock..... love using the different 50mm Voigtlander and LLL lenses on the M3..... hope to be on the next call... take care my friend
Thanks John, I found the audio quality better while holding it but it does have a clip. I’ll have to try my lav mic again. MA also nice!
Thank you, that convinces me that I don’t need to replace my M2 with an MP, also I really appreciate the single frame lines in the M2
My M2 is soooo good to use. Added a Keks light meter. The build quality is exceptional, a photo tank! Got several M's but the M2 is my favourate film camera!
Yes you don’t need for sure.. unless the extra framelines/ hotshoe.
Matt, if you like to test something; next to my Leica i have a GFX.
The GFX set to 6x7 using m-mount lenses = almost no vignet. 16bit colour/grey tones.
Great, yes I will cover the GFX at some point especially now I have the digital Hasselblad
Nice combo! Something for every occasion.
I love my MP black paint...Chefs kiss.....mic drop.
They are very pretty for sure!

My 40 years old M6 meter works great! Given the $$ that people are asking for an M6 (I would never sell), €500 to €800 for a new light meter circuit if ever needed seems like a great deal! Take care, Matt!! Love your work and your channel!!
Thanks! Yes it’s great we now have the option to repair the M6 meters.
Ah interesting, yes they said MP from my period not as good. Shark skin period. Fingers crossed newer is better.
@@MichaelP-p7l hi , I own the m6j, superb external camera but the worth telemeter I experienced.
Thank you. Yes it was important to buy it so I can say I owned it/ used it.
Thanks Sandy, yes it seems so, Sadly.

@@zoltankaparthy9095 who are these mysterious repair men … were do they come from … whom do they serve??
Stay tuned… all will be revealed….
Thanks for this, now I know that I don't need an MP, my M3 is enough
No problem! (Maybe don’t watch my next video) :)
I bought a Blackpaint MP and the viewfinder is clear and contrasty. How does the viewfinder on a good condition M3 compared to the new models?
Haha thank me later if you like the results! I own the Summilux but often use cheaper lenses.
my reason for the MP is the brighter and sharper view finder. I’m using the M6 more than 20 years, but now I’m very happy with the MP and my M2
Nice! I have another bright viewfinder coming soon, stay tuned!
I have a silver MP and we share the first five numbers on the serial. I'm also 46664XX. I got the MP after selling my M6 TTL. I have two other film cameras, Nikon FM2n and a Minolta CLE. Seriously considering getting a Bessa R3M.
Nice! Stay tuned my M story is t quite finished. See my many Bessa videos, I had the R3A and many others.
The M6s definitely have their fan base, nice!
Thanks, yes stay tuned on this topic. ..and yes buy what is good for you, 100%

Sorry my dyslexic skills, apologies!
“Returning my Leica MP”…..attention grabbing title?
The purchase of such an expensive camera does require forethought.
Thanks, yes I was lucky I could send it back and swap for the M-A
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
From which Leica UK shop did you purchase the purported MP?
I get them As it’s my job to review them but then yes I only keep those that perform for my needs.
I agree but the M3 is 70 years old. 😉
Because Leica is now positioned as a luxurious manufacturer. Not a precision photography tool one.
The 'Bulb' setting on the M6 also turns the light meter off. That being said, I always forget too!
Thanks! Yes I’m so used to not having that feature I just forget.
Thanks! I did try the ZF but Ms are still king. Agree yes sadly I know what I like so sometimes I have to buy and return to find the one for me.
Can be retracted on the m10 however I leave it out
Ken rockwells review is very accurate in my view, it’s surprisingly dense and very well built
@@dayzpast That's a really good one! No problems regarding flaring? I'm a bit afraid it'd lose contrast quickly with sun in the frame.
Easy answer, I use the Eureka even though I have others.
Older lenses flare more yes.
Yes someone else mentioned the ‘plastic’ gear failing for the counter. I prefer film too but need digital also for my work.
Ok … would love someone to actually prove this plastic parts rumour…as for the older ms feeling smoother…. Older M have brass bearings and the Mp have Steel….they do settle down and get smother in time ..
End of day you pays your money.. you take your choice…
Yes I can only go in what some repair guys say. It’s mostly metals replaced with cheaper metals (without loss of function as Leica tell me)
@ again I would like someone to prove this thing about cheaper materials … it’s bull .. I think there’s enough M repair experts out there that have striped Mp /ma and even the new M6 .. and I think if they had found something bad it would be all over the net …
Yes I know the old M6 gad a plastic film counter and a plastic tip on film advance.. and zinc top plate ..those days are long over ..
After having used a Leica M2 from the 1960s to very recent times, I have had a difficult time warming up to M5, M6, etc. The nuance feel and operation of the M2 & M3 is enough different to make the original cameras just different in a good way.
Thanks Stuart, yes if you’re used to the M2/3 you can feel a difference.
I have a M3 and M4 both are great!
Nice!
Same, transitional M3 and Wetzlar M4 🙂
Thanks for the info about the gears.
I always understood the modern MP to have brass gearing!
I have yet to shoot an M camera of any type, but I agree that the Barnacks are just sooooo smooth, and, well, satisfying to shoot. That lovely soft *snick*.
Barnacks are awesome!
Hey MrLeica appreciate your work and channel. You might wanna check gearlist on your website your film cameras are not visible. Best cheers
Thanks! Did you go to the a-z film camera list tab or Leica tab for all Leica cameras? Not on gear tab.
You're welcome Matt :)
Thanks, catch you soon

Yes it seems I don’t need a meter so there are better options without meters.

Sorry to hear, yes sadly other people tell me these stories too.

Thanks Jason, yes old offer the best value. I’d like to try the MA just so I’ve got experience with it.
Glad they make circuit board for m6! Hopefully they make one for the M6TTL too
Ask ACR if you need one
I had a lovely M3, loved it but I’m convinced M film cameras are better suited to shoot 35mm… so I moved on and I now have a black MA and a Zeiss 35mm lens and I rarely shoot 50mm with it. It genuinely feels quite awkward to shoot 50mm on an MA. If you are a 50mm shooter I do think the M3 is quite complimentary so it makes a lot of sense to have 2 separate bodies and get rid of the MP
Thanks, agree MA or similar is better for 28/35 vs M3. I keep M3 for 50/90.
Matt this is great news about the circuit boards. Is this specifically for the Classic M6? That’s the non TTL correct? Still trying to familiarize myself with the versions. So this gives me peace of mind to buy a used M6 knowing the meter is replaceable.
I think it will fix both old M6 models but please ask ACR to be sure. Definitely M6 classic.
Thanks. Yes I still try to answer every comment (even if I don’t get to all the replies). It was nice to try the MP.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I should get someday a MP, if i can save my pennies up for this...because it represents my initials, Matt. 😅
Love my M6 reissue, glad I made that choice against the BP MP. MP is just an MP… the M6 reissue is an MP + M6 😎
Yes, nice thought! You get both cameras with M6 re-issue!
Still feels the most tactile and great toy to have and keep. Till M11 came about. Sold off my last of last film M collection and never looked back since the bloody costs of film is now off the roof!
Yes sadly not as cheap as it was!
Why do the graphics all say you’re returning an M6? (Not MP).
Sorry that’s me being dyslexic! Apologies
Nice! Yes M3 loading is more secure.
Reason No6 Matt I think that black circular dot on the front (is it the battery port) is just ugly, it spoils the front design of the camera, perhaps if they had recessed the circle so it matched the red dot on your M4-P ie being flat would have been more in keeping with the design.
Yes stay tuned on that topic
Hi ya Matt, another informative video, how a vid on Leica repairers that you use?
Thanks! Sadly my repair guy retired so use the list of recommended repair guys on MrLeica.com (I made that page to help people).
Hey Matt,
The older MP with the shark skin in silver (apart from the bolder script on the top plate) is a little underwhelming cosmetically
As I have both, I can say that if you bought the latest black paint MP you would immediately see and feel different between the difference compared to your other black or silver chrome cameras
Anyhow all the very best regards,
Ron
Thanks Ron, interesting and I appreciate you sharing your experience. Stay tuned, the story isn’t quite finished yet!
I still have my Nikon F2as cameras. Good to find a tech that can keep the cameras in top form and meters working.
Yes FE2 is still great. I still have mine too. (I much prefer that meter to M6 meter).
It would be interesting to know if you will get a full refund from the shop for returning the MP because you don't need/like it?
Stay tuned, I found another option
I have owned most of the leica film Ms and the only one I kept over the years is the Leica m3. I do miss my m6ttl .85. I had the m-a and it was great. The m4 is probably the best all around classic. The m7 I always killed the battery by leaving it on and when you killed the batter on the m7 you killed double the amount of lr44 batterys as the m6/mp. The m4-2 was good but did feel cheeper. I have never had either m4-p or the m5. Id be weary to get an m5 because of roller issues in the shutter. I am currently looking for another leica m2. (would love to find a M2R)
Thanks for sharing, yes the M-A would be my choice of modern cameras..
May i ask how you compare the M4 to M2 and M3 (build quality)? I'm currently going to buy a M4; and why did you only keep the M3?
how's that thypoch working for you? any opinion?
Yes see those videos, love the f2 especially as smaller.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom you mean wide open and acceptably sharp?
Any character else you like about the new
Thypoch?
I bought the new Leica M6 and when out shooting the battery cover fell off and I lost it
I sent an email to Leica… man these guys don’t give a sh*t. No response for a week now, 3 emails and a call
I also shoot professionally with Leica and I have to say I love the cameras but their CS is AWFUL
Sorry to hear. Yes sometimes I don’t think they help themselves.
Gosh! 5,000GBP WOW!
Yes not cheap if you buy new. Can find great deals buying used.
Even the older 198x M6's are too new for me. They don't quite feel as good in my hands as my M4...
Yes the M4 was the last of the more solid Ms
All the new film Ms - MP, M-A, M6 (and the discontinued M7) use a plastic gear in the film counter mechanism. Which will eventually break. And has in mine. Easy to fix but still about a $200 repair, but the previous Ms had that gear made out of metal. These cameras are now $6000 new, so why this cost cutting? For $6000 you'd think everything was made as good as possible.
Thanks for explaining, I’ll ask the question if I ever get a chance. Good to know these specifics.
sorry wrong. from tummydoc
Actually, the plastic film counter disk, appear in M4-2 and still present in the M7 and MP, was never the part which failed nor was it the cause of the failure of the film counter to reset correctly.
- Gary
Thanks Gary, nice cameras! Yes I develop and scan my film. See blog posts (and videos) about it. See the same for other cameras that I own.
ohhhh interesting - classic M6 could get new metering board...... very nice. definitely talking my language.
Yes! Great news for M6 users!
As if I couldn't want one of those old barnacks any more than I already do..........
Haha sorry about that! At least they are cheaper than Ms.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Just seems like the perfect little Cycle/Ski/Run/Hike camera. ( now that's an olympus 35RC for me that's slowly fading )
Leica stopped making cameras for photojournalists and started making cameras for rich dudes. Yeah, I'm one of those too. But I only use Leica because of their old lenses. Otherwise I'd buy a Fuji)
I think they make cameras for enthusiasts that can afford them. I love the lenses too. I use the SL for client work normally, not Ms.
M3 Single Stroke is the greatest gadget ever made.
Agreed!
I suspect that you had no intention of ever keeping it. It made a couple of good videos though($$), thanks.
You’ll see that I planned to spend the money. If you’re in doubt wait for future videos.
Hint: someone carrying around many specialized Leica cameras worth several thousands each is not "relatable". ;)
That said, I do love my 2020 Leica MP with my 50mm Summilux ASPH. :)
I’m glad you enjoy the same setup. Yes most people have house, tv, sofa etc. I just have cameras.
Aargh! I have the Wotancraft pilot bag and a couple of the original add ons, but they're too big. Love the new ones in your video cos they're smaller, but that fluffy bit to add a patch? Sorry, but I'm not a 13 year old.
Those patches are add on but don’t need to use them. I won’t add patches either. I use 2,3,7L depending on cameras being used for that trip/ day + 18L
True, I didn’t say M-A I said MP ;) .. agree new should be better.
I bought a new Leica MP because it comes with a 3-year warranty.
Great, it’s good for peace of mind as some new cameras need issues fixing.
MP never appealed to me really.
It was great to try one so I can talk about them but yes not the best for my needs.
I'm baffled as to why the Digital Leicas cost more than the analogue Leicas, gears and mechanical stuff I would think are more complicated to make than a couple of resisters and a dioed soldered onto a board, by a machine, like another manufacturer.
Electronic Leica include the latest electronics sadly so cost more.
As to your first reason - you bought chrome. Of COURSE it's going to be like every other chrome M you have.
Yes I think silver looks classic so that was the idea.
What bnw Film are you actually using?
Depends on the day, a lot is cine FP4 recently as mentioned in the last MP video.
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thank you very muxh
Enjoying the video Matt, any reason why not seen you review the M5 yet? would love to hear your views on it one day
Thanks! Yes I skipped the M5 as I prefer the ‘classic M’ design and features. The M5 is more like my CL, a bit quirky but takes the same photos.
If you ever do change your mind about reviewing the M5, then happy to offer mine for your review
6:03 dang imagine having a “beater” Leica
Haha yes I mean it has some marks already. You do see some completely beaten up Ms being used by real long term street photographers.
Waiting for that follow up video
Soon!
Thanks, yes I think there are better cameras to suit my ‘needs’.
🎉
Thanks!
I heard from Don Goldberg of DAG that Leica now has a new supply of light meter circuit boards for the M6. It's true that not so long ago, if the light meter broke, it couln't be fixed.
Great, thanks for sharing. There is now a Europe solution too so great for users.
You forgot to mention the unlucky serial number. 😀😈
Ah yes!! Reason #6 :)
M-A next week?😊
Maybe! ;)
He is finding his way in Leica M world.
There was great resistance to the Leica M3 when it was introduced. He is not old enough to have been there. He still
Makes quite beautiful images. As they say, ‘some can; some can not’.
Thanks yes I was over 2 decades after the M3 so thanks for sharing how things were back then. It’s always interesting to hear.
RUclips+Leica=Repair, Leica are crap.
You do hear some bad stories yes but I think most work.
🤡🤡🤡🤡
Thanks
I am afraid that the flaws of the camera resides between your ears and not inside the M P 😂
Just another thing. A view videos ago you were trying to anonimise your M10 by removing the red dot but now you are showin a classic M6 with red dot, a red shutter release button and to top it of, a red cord 😅😊
Time to get professional help. 🥳😜
Haha fair point. In my defence for model shoots red anything is fine, for street I prefer stealth. The M6 came out of retirement to go to ACR for new meter so it’s in its original state from years ago when I bought it.
