Hello Thorsten, I just bought a second hand M-10 'kit' . It's a 24mp M10 with a summilux 1.4 50mm ASPH. I am over the moon with the results. The camera and lens enable me to materialize what my gut says what a scene/opportunity/subject has to offer. A very satisfactory and inspiring experience. I sense a road of discovery ahead. Hi Thorsten, I am a bit confused about M11 when reading your review of SL3. You mention on your website that "The Leica M11 is the one fruit on the tree that didn't turn out that well in image quality, but let's not discuss that here" but in your review of M11 on the website you mention there " There is an aliveness and lightness to the images of the Leica M11". Please could you elaborate for me? [not wishing to catch you but this might be useful for my own purchase]
That's right, that might need a further explanation. As little as I admire the M11 and factually find the colors off, the sensor does have an aliveness to it, probably due to the backlit sensor technology. Problem with the M11 is not that it freezes (never did for me) but that you cannot trust that it will reproduce correct colors. So you spend a lot of time trying to decide with yourself if the world really looks like that, or if it looks more like that. The M11 also has 60MP, but that really doesn't do much for it that you need. And strangely, the "same sensor" seem to work better on SL3 with M lenses (see my new video "What I really think of the Leica SL3"). I have a while complex of articles coming up on color science and future cameras, but it's been a lot of work and taken some time.

Thorsten , thank you for this detailed thoughtful discussion of the Leica m's and the M10 , I was told that the M11 has the correct height to affix my DR Summicron 50mm F2 with the goggles. I am pleased that the M11 will fit the original DR 50mm F2 ; however , I have read reviews at B&H Photography of New York , and there have been issues with the sensor and with the turn-around time for repairs with Leica on the M11 and for that reason I have decided to hold off buying that body , at least until mid 2024 or 2025 . I hope that Leica is not going to go the way of many manufacturers being pressured to pump out gear. I am going away from Brand "X " since purchasing the M3 ( KANTO ) serviced from an Italian owner , and I love the M3 ...everything about is is top quality , then for the 35mm lenses I purchased a like new MA , in silver finish as is the M3 . I love the M Film bodies. Honestly my next most loved camera is my ROLLEI Wide , 55mm F4 TLR , and it's sibling the TESSAR 75mm 3.5 MVX model . Rollei's are so quiet and stable. Both of my most loved camera's are German gems. 😌
I have an m10r and the ccd Leicas which I enjoy very much. My hope is that Leica release another 24mp M camera at some point with much faster wake time, closer focusing rangefinder if possible, dual magnification and decent battery. Strip back all the gimmicks they gave us with the m11. They have the Q and SL for that.
Any update on the M11 Masterclass. I pre-ordered and still waiting for it. I see you are not a huge fan of the M11. Does that mean there will be no video for it?
The M11 video is made and updated now, so it is coming rather soon. The attitude is not if the camera you bought is good or better or worse, but how to optimally use it and get good results out of it.
I like the bottom plate, it secures the essential battery and SD card. Nowadays I use a M4-2 which gives me the best experience, no fuss and clean looks. I had the M-P Typ 240 but found it too bulky, heavy and too many features.
If you are new to m- system. Will you go m10-r / m11 with a voigtlander 40 or 50 mm lens or Will you take a m10 with a Leica lens 40 / 50 mm lens? I have a Leica Q for normal use and an Nikon z8 with 180-600mm and 400 4.5 for wildlife. But sometime a miss a 40/50 mm lens i my Leica Q. So i consider to Bay into the M system with a 40 or 50 mm lens. But are the Leica lenses much better Then the voigtlander lenses?
I also think if he would have been able to do it the Leica would have shot moving pictures. And when you say reportage in context to the recording landscape now movies are shared with a trend upward. So I would love to see a m camera back with movie capture function. That's something I would like to see.
Not going to happen 🙂 I don't do comparisons. I firmly believe that you fall in love with a lens or camera, and then you use the heck out of it and make magic. Part of making something really work is that you want to use it.
Excellent discourse on both history and camera body specifics. With my M10, I am frustrated by lengthy second images when shooting low light. Any effort at astrophotography was met with high frustration. Menu controls did not make it any easier to adjust range of settings. It took deep dive into the manual to understand that entire Noise Reduction methodology and settings. That feature plus mediocre battery life were enough to make me ponder an M11 replacement. Can I manage the exposure matter better? I have 4 batteries, so I can cope with battery life. I'd be tickled to enhance my satisfaction with the M10 I already own. As you noted, a trade "up" to a M11 is an expensive change and I'd be happy to prevent doing so.
I think the M10-P is the best M for the discrete family photographer. - no dot - and all white paint removed (yes ALL white paint) - sound - not completely quite like 11-P, but enough - LV, touch screen and brass - price to value output is highest for M10 generation rn and the P version is the cleanest looking imo I’ve decided to pair it with the M11-P in brass.
I have an M10R in Black Paint. I think this is my definitive M camera. It looks and feels like an analogue MP. I use it next to an SL2-S. In terms of character of the pictures they are very are similar, I don’t see difference in the final pictures, as I’m using the same M lenses on both cameras.
I will just enjoy and learn as much as I can about my M10 and ignore all the new models, I will take good care of it so it will last many years. I don't care to upgrade. A camera this expensive and well made should be enjoyed for a long time.
Thank you so much for this video. I’m a Hasselblad user, but I’m 100% convinced that I’m going forward with the M system. I tried a Q3 for some weeks but I was only fooling myself, I want the real thing, The M! The question is M10r or M11… I’m only an amateur but I really love quality and craftsmanship. I’m mainly going to use the picture files out of the “box” no big editing, transfer to my phone, and use it on the internet. And do some print. Is the pictures coming out of the M10r more classic Lica and ready to use than the M11. I have 2 good offers bringing the m11 and the M10R close to each other price wise. But I simply can’t decide. I love the feel of the M10R but is the M11 going to keep its value better going forward… Would appreciate your professional opinion. Thank you so much for your great work! Kind regards from a fellow Dane in London
@@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard Would you take just a standard M10 or pay the extra for an M10R? Is there any noticeable difference in the picture quality?
Interesting that you left out my favorite M series cameras - the 'D' models. They, certainly before the M11-D, represent the epitome of simplicity - the M10-D probably being the all around best of them. But the M-D Typ 262 takes home the trophy for sheer simplicity, no question.
@@bernardlesperance742 yes, it’s a speciality. Love the M-D 262 and did this article on all of them: www.overgaard.dk/leica-M11-D-digital-rangefinder-camera-page-8.html
The cameras are durable for but you need to be careful not to bang it on something. You can knock the alignment out of the rangefinder. But i guess you can still zone focus.
Focus sometimes has to be adjusted, and best sending it to Leica. It can go out for small things like nothing really happened, but then it did. Or you drop it on the floor and nothing happened. The more recent M cameras have more durable and stable focus mechanism than earlier models, so it is less of a thing.
I love my M10-D and consider it and the M10-P to be the best digital Ms. Followed by the M10-R if you really need more resolution. They will be remembered as the M6 of this generation. The M11 and I never got along and it was sold after a year of frustration. Buggy firmware, lots of features I don’t use, and too much resolution for the kind of photos I take. It’s by far the best digital M if you primarily use live view, but I don’t. I’m so glad I sold it and went back to the M10 line. I think it will be remembered as the M5 of this generation. Used prices will be what confirms the above.
I’ve had my M10r from new and it’s been faultless. I must say it’s been a gateway to Leica and I now have the MP bp and an original SL601 will a collection on M Leica glass. I must say it’s pretty obvious you are not a fan of the M11 😅 Thank you for this video as I truly believe you have a true insight into Leica
Yes, it is true. M11 is not reliable enough for me. Somebody said the other day, he "hope there could be a M12 out sooner than usual … just sweep that 11 under the rug"
I hope the M12 is NOT like the M10. The M10 had poor battery life, bad (old fashion) light metering all because of the position Leica had in the past. M11 is an improvement and I hope the M12 will have some delicate improvements again 🔴👍🏼
I really love your enthusiasm for Leica. I really like them too, but why do we need another Leica M? M10, M11 and now M12? Why? I am already disappointed with the SL3. In an effort to be all things to all men, at a price of course, they ruined the refreshing minimalistic essence of the SL.
Mirrorless Nikon and proper focus. U1 is set for 100% zoom focus with M lenses. A mode uses back button, thumb, to auto focus. Shutter press does not refocus. Honestly I have a hard time choosing M10, M10R, or Nikon mirrorless which can be set to silent, no shutter at all. Silent is vibrationless.
So essentially we're waiting for an M12-D! I also love the bottom plate and think a subtle update of it would be fantastic, a bit like the ergonomics of the ISO dial.. I really don't like the Hasselblad-style battery access thing, and the base upside-down access battery-charging on M11 seems dim-witted. M11 bearing all the hallmarks of a camera designed in a hurry by a committee and rushed to market when it wasn't ready. Meanwhile, I'll stick to Kodak and my MP thanks.
I sold my M10 because I preferred my M9 too much. Yes the M9 has lower DR but I always strive for a good exposure and I'm always fine. Because of the sensor corrosion issue I feel like if you find a fixed M9 it is your duty to use it until it completely fails. Also good working M9's are starting to become very limited in numbers because of corroded sensors which means they are becoming limited editions simply because of this. If you find a carrion free M9, treasure it. Now if I could only afford a Titanium M9.
The perfect M? To me: there’s none. The best M? Hmmm, I’d say the M7 and the M11 The most M M? Puh, well, the M3ss, M4, M9, M10-P I’d think. I know the most love the M6 and I have 2 of them, and it’s a good easy camera, but i get more M feel out of the M4, having a lightmeter in the camera distracts me, even without batteries I can’t ignore that they’re missing. But I can with the M4, it’s just not there, it’s now all about you. My preferred M? M4, M11. My preferred lens? NLX50f1.2, SLX50pre-asph, SELM21 My odd-kit? M240 with SLX80-R on Leica MR adapter, the M240 got to no war, but to iceland-waterfall-mist and died!! Yes! It got fully restored, by Leica (not Wetzlar who rejected). So no, it’s not a war camera, it failed 3 times.
i like the new direction Leica is going. M11, Q3, etc. finally starting to look like a camera that i will buy. sorry if it offends those that like old stuff - i like new tech, and i wish Leica will step it up. just to be clear - there are folks to like film, and that is great. go shoot on those cameras (new or old) what i hope to see Leica evolve into - is to abandon all these legacy stuff, that keeps the camera in limbo of half old half new. let's evolve the M even more. M10 was a shit camera to me.
Yeah .... "while we wait" ... really??? Like us schmucks are all waiting on Leica's next gravy train .... catch yourself on, Thorsten!!! Leica gear depreciates faster than any car I've ever owned ... too many upgrades, model changes, etc ... the M-11 P's specs should have been for the standard M11... in reality, the images from my Nikon Zf with the 50mm F1.8 Z lens are superior to those from my M11 with 50mm Summilux ... colour, rendition, out of focus areas ... everything!

Have you in the Past received cameras before released?
Also, happy new year!
M10 series is in my opinion the best, and if you have a Leica, you want to use a Leica lens on it.
I also think if he would have been able to do it the Leica would have shot moving pictures. And when you say reportage in context to the recording landscape now movies are shared with a trend upward. So I would love to see a m camera back with movie capture function. That's something I would like to see.
I would like to see a comparison between the Leica M Summilux 28 mm VS Fujifilm 18mm 1.4.
- no dot - and all white paint removed (yes ALL white paint)
- sound - not completely quite like 11-P, but enough
- LV, touch screen and brass
- price to value output is highest for M10 generation rn and the P version is the cleanest looking imo
I’ve decided to pair it with the M11-P in brass.
Having said all this, we all do want to have an example from each generation 😅
I agreen on the M10-P, it has 24Mp and it's great for photos and post production.
@@nymzoindian7250 I'm the same. I tend to keep them to refer to them.
M10P M10D M10M M10R had extremely quiet shutter. Unfortunately not possible with the M11 generation 😢
@@allena3430 you get a completely silent shutter on M11 iirc.
Always wear a camera 😊 thanks for posting Thorsten.
Can you recommend a Fanny pack to carry your Leica while you travel abroad
The question is M10r or M11…
I’m only an amateur but I really love quality and craftsmanship.
I love the feel of the M10R but is the M11 going to keep its value better going forward…
Would appreciate your professional opinion.
Thank you so much for your great work!
Kind regards from a fellow Dane in London
@@jacobklingert3029 M10-R probably will do better on second hand market over time. But really go with what you feel is most you :-)
@ thank you so much for your quick response🙏🏻 what about pictures straight out of the camera? Better on M10?
@@jacobklingert3029 yes, better on M10. Just generlly a very reliable camera that sum up what a digital Leica is about without any odd additions.
@@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard amazing you have helped me more than you know🙏🏻🙏🏻 I going to Dk Monday and buying the M10R
I must say it’s pretty obvious you are not a fan of the M11 😅
Thank you for this video as I truly believe you have a true insight into Leica
Yes, it is true. M11 is not reliable enough for me. Somebody said the other day, he "hope there could be a M12 out sooner than usual … just sweep that 11 under the rug"
You have brassed that M10-R + 50 APO black paint combo beautifully.
Yes, that is a keeper 🙂
When TvO says “Photo-graphy” it always seems to (A) catch me off guard (or offgaard) and (B) make me a little weak in my american knees
The M Leica has been around since 1925! No comment!
I hope the M12 is NOT like the M10. The M10 had poor battery life, bad (old fashion) light metering all because of the position Leica had in the past. M11 is an improvement and I hope the M12 will have some delicate improvements again 🔴👍🏼
If I could afford, I would love to own M10R with 35mm and 50mm f 1.4 lenses. Unfortunately a bit out of my reach budget wise.
"Voigtlander looks okay" - this was true some 15 years ago may be but it's not objective today
Maybe time to revisit
If only I was a millionaire! 🙂
🎩
I really love your enthusiasm for Leica. I really like them too, but why do we need another Leica M? M10, M11 and now M12? Why? I am already disappointed with the SL3. In an effort to be all things to all men, at a price of course, they ruined the refreshing minimalistic essence of the SL.
I sot of like the SL3 the best myself. Though I like M most and feel that it is really an extension of myself.
M10 Monochrom is like Kraftwerk.
Autobahn 🙂
The model@@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
So essentially we're waiting for an M12-D! I also love the bottom plate and think a subtle update of it would be fantastic, a bit like the ergonomics of the ISO dial.. I really don't like the Hasselblad-style battery access thing, and the base upside-down access battery-charging on M11 seems dim-witted. M11 bearing all the hallmarks of a camera designed in a hurry by a committee and rushed to market when it wasn't ready. Meanwhile, I'll stick to Kodak and my MP thanks.
A lot of talk, not a lot of M10 specific content.
My dream is the Hermes M9 🙂
@@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard Wow I could watch how the whole package was made all day. ruclips.net/video/LAfSfnykXfo/видео.html
The perfect M? To me: there’s none.
The best M? Hmmm, I’d say the M7 and the M11
The most M M? Puh, well, the M3ss, M4, M9, M10-P I’d think. I know the most love the M6 and I have 2 of them, and it’s a good easy camera, but i get more M feel out of the M4, having a lightmeter in the camera distracts me, even without batteries I can’t ignore that they’re missing. But I can with the M4, it’s just not there, it’s now all about you.
My preferred M? M4, M11.
My preferred lens? NLX50f1.2, SLX50pre-asph, SELM21
My odd-kit? M240 with SLX80-R on Leica MR adapter, the M240 got to no war, but to iceland-waterfall-mist and died!! Yes! It got fully restored, by Leica (not Wetzlar who rejected). So no, it’s not a war camera, it failed 3 times.
The perfect camera is the one you really love to use and which does what you want it to.
The M11 is the direction Leica chose. The M10 is out of production.
Thorsten subtly saying the M11 should be forgotten as soon as possible?😂
Summary: buy a Leica! 😘
Says how great the manual focus is and then proceeds to show only out of focus photos..
Save your money
i like the new direction Leica is going. M11, Q3, etc. finally starting to look like a camera that i will buy. sorry if it offends those that like old stuff - i like new tech, and i wish Leica will step it up.
just to be clear - there are folks to like film, and that is great. go shoot on those cameras (new or old)
what i hope to see Leica evolve into - is to abandon all these legacy stuff, that keeps the camera in limbo of half old half new. let's evolve the M even more. M10 was a shit camera to me.
Yeah .... "while we wait" ... really??? Like us schmucks are all waiting on Leica's next gravy train .... catch yourself on, Thorsten!!! Leica gear depreciates faster than any car I've ever owned ... too many upgrades, model changes, etc ... the M-11 P's specs should have been for the standard M11... in reality, the images from my Nikon Zf with the 50mm F1.8 Z lens are superior to those from my M11 with 50mm Summilux ... colour, rendition, out of focus areas ... everything!
Obviously you didn’t buy an original Noctilux which now sell for circa $50k. Nothing appreciates like a Leica
