    I just bought a used silver M10 and I'm watching vids like yours to get ready for the camera. I love my e-mount Voigtlander Noktons, so I bought an M-mount 50mm 1.2 Nokton as the first lens for my Leica.

    I tried the system with the M262 and realised it was the camera for me. Great resale value allowed me to basically “rent” the M262 and now I’ve picked up an M 10p feels like the right decision for me. Love your video. You hit the right notes in terms of why these cameras work. Yes the metering mode is a bit weird but it just makes you more intentional and as you say if you underexpose a little bit it’s okay. It’s not for everyone but if you zone focus and love the 35 mm or 50 mm focal length then it’s superb. I always say to people try before you buy because if the system clicks you’ll love it but if it doesn’t it’s bewildering.

    I have an M9 and recently bought a mint M10R. My M9’s patch is quite a challenge at times, but agree that it is really excellent in the M10. Leica cameras are fantastic. Fujis are good, but the day you touch a Leica it’s over. There’s no possible comparison.

    • @gregmarcus3064
      @gregmarcus3064 2 года назад

      The day you touch a Leica is the day that reminds you that you can't afford it and thus I stick with Fuji film and kick ass with my pictures because I have uber autofocus. Leica is just a flex anyway and pictures matter more than the camera.

    • @irenedp4947

      @@gregmarcus3064, I understand your point but I don’t intend to “kick any asses”. As a professional, the work I produce and deliver is what matters. Leica lenses are simply better, and price is a secondary consideration if you are paid for what you do. Besides, of the Leica cameras I use to work currently, none was purchased new and they weren’t terribly expensive. I did pay a lot more for my Fuji GFX 100 when it came out in 19 even after giving as part of the payment my previous GFX 50. I use the Fuji a lot for certain types of work where I need the resolution, so again it was a good investment.

      Many moons ago I've rented an M6 and 35mm Summilux for a low light event (my Canon 1n could not AF in low light) and did get the shots I needed. Because the event was on Friday, I've had a camera for the whole weekend so I ran couple rolls of Velvia through it as well - however I did find viewfinder back then little difficult to work with, same disease as Hasselblad bodies - too dim and difficult to MF. Fast forward 3 decades and M10 viewfinder patch is totally usable for my imperfect eyes. Whoever says Leica is "stuck in time" should have their eyes examined or just take a semi-modern M for a spin. BTW I don't have a modern Fuji to compare to but I used to shoot with 6x9 "Texas Leica" (which is strictly tripod affair) - maybe someday I will explore Fuji again. For now I am quite happy with my M10.

      My gateway was the original Q. Before that, I really did think Leica digital was mostly hype. The lens on the Q changed my mind, which led to the M10 and now here we are. 😅 The monochrom and MD cameras look like a lot of fun- especially the MD

      @@frame-lines Definitely, the framelines just seem to feel right with the 35mm, where they feel a bit too small with 50mm and too near to the outer edge with 28mm. I tend to zone focus with a near and far setting at F8 for street, which is really quick. A fine review. Regardless of price, 'image' or specs', the thing with a Leica M is that over decades, the world's greatest photographers have found the rangefinder form factor, almost unique to Leica, to be the best to use to get iconic images. It takes some learning, some adapting too, but it is a proven 'tool' for photography. I hugely regret selling my M4-2, because I didn't 'learn' to work with it, like giving up learning a new language after 3 words.

    My only problem with M10 is light meter when using viewfinder, as you mentioned, but I see it very differently. IMO It is built for "protect you highlights" type of photographers, so it underexposes images. At least mine does that :)
    I find sensor not that great when recovering shadows. Perhaps comparing to older Leicas it is, but when you compare it to modern mirrorless it has some problems. I much prefer overexposed highlights to poorly recovered shadows
    This issue forced me to shoot in full manual, just like you do, and... I LOVE IT! Sure, I would like better light meter, like in M11, but becouse of it I have finally learned to use manual mode all the time.

    Nice to see the Sunmarit getting some love. You might want to splurge for the Leica hood if you find it at a good price. It will give you a smidgen more saturation. Thanks for sharing your thoughts also coming from Fuji!
    One thing that gets rarely talked about is because the viewfinder patch is dead centre and (unlike with Fuji’s hybrid cameras) you cannot shift that focus patch - there is no way to get sharp images with focus and re-compose technique at f1.4 (which is the key reason folks go for the summiluxes). Inevitably the subject has to be in the centre to achieve sharp focus which IMHO is a major draw back in terms of composition. Your thoughts on this ?

    • @frame-lines
      @frame-lines  2 года назад

      I did think that would be a problem, but even shooting at 1.4 on the summilux I didn't see much of an issue with sharpness when I used that focusing technique. I can't explain why that is. I've also shot with a 90mm at 2.8 using focus and re-compose and have seen very sharp photos. I would say that the M10 seems to be best suited to a 35mm lens which gives you enough depth of field even at shallow apertures to achieve sharp focus when using focus & re-compose.

    I love shooting with these cameras but they're not without drawbacks which you didn't mention:
    1) Minimum focus distance on most lenses is 0.7m and on older lenses is 1m.
    2) The camera body or the lens could be out of calibration and you will miss focus because of this.
    3) It's quite heavy (as heavy as a Sony A7 III) and not easy to grip.
    Also I wanted to say that I actually find the viewfinder to be darker than my other film cameras, including another M mount camera, the Zeiss Ikon ZM.

    • @frame-lines
      @frame-lines  2 года назад

      1) Absolutely right. The min focus can be a pain- i guess i don't really notice it that much with 50mm
      3) It is a hefty-boi which is partly the reason i use the summarit 50 because it's very very light and offsets the body weight.
      I've never tried a Zeiss Ikon but i have heard good things about its VF. I don't feel the M2 or M3 are any brighter or bigger than the M10? The M10's vf is slightly tinted but in real world use its very clear and bright imo.

    Curious to hear your opinion about the M11, I tried it briefly in the store, but didn't really like the new shutter (four actions on the m11 instead of two on the m10), it definitely feels more like a mirrorless camera than the m10 does. I think the M10-R is actually the sweet spot of simplicity and a slightly improved sensor over the M10 (better highlight recovery for example).

    • @frame-lines
      @frame-lines  2 года назад

      Leica have loaned us an M11 so we’ll have a video about it soon. I heard a lot about the new shutter but my immediate reaction is that I like the dampened ‘kerchunk’ sound. Do you think it feels less precise/immediate?

    • @perfectly_boring
      @perfectly_boring 2 года назад

      @@frame-lines since the M11 shutter is always open, in order to take one picture the shutter needs to: close, open, close and then open again. Whereas with the m10 versions it would just: open and close. It makes it feel a bit sluggish, but of course that's all in my head, since the actual difference in delay has been measured to be minor (something like 18ms slower than the m10-r).
      But it definitely feels different and more like a fuji/sony shutter. Especially when you're shooting at lower shutter speeds, you can feel the rumble feeling and the most noticeable is the last opening of the shutter (to be ready to meter again).
      All this is of course nitpicking, but I liked the M series for the simplicity (and because it's close to my film m), not because I wanted another mirrorless camera with a million options.
      Since the M10-R and M11 are essentially the same price new, I think the M11 is still the better purchase. But I think I'd lean slightly towards a used M10-R

I want an M10... or at least an M240 I believe. I like 28mm, but I prefer 50mm sometimes, or even 35mm. And I want to get as close as film experience that I can, without the hassle of film. Great video and insights as always. Thanks.

    That camera costs a bloody fortune. It better be insanely amazing. Why is it worth that much? Is it about $8,500US body only? It would be by far the biggest purchase, by far, of my life for a camera body. I am not really a professional photographer, but I like good gear. That is out of my budget, but you never know. I could have a good year and look for a higher end camera. I would go for a used one. I saw some at half the retail price.

    • @frame-lines
      @frame-lines  2 года назад +2

      Maybe coming from Fuji explains it? Fuji is very muted in terms of skin tones, especially when using profiles like classic chrome. So maybe you've developed a taste for that? Personally I like the pushed film aesthetic which has vibrant skintones, especially in the shadows.

    Be mindful when diving in Leica world. The sect has ugly secrets you find out once you have a camera that does not work, there is no warranty and you need to wait for one year to get it back from Wetzlar repaired or not repaired.
