    I especially agree with your point about learning how to use the M camera much faster with the M10. I bought an M3 and M4 last year, and my results were less than stellar. Just added an M10 to my collection, and the immediate feedback, along with the almost identical look and feel to the film cameras has been a great help in relearning manual focus and proper exposure for the film cameras. Having an Automatic exposure setting on the M10 is nice too, because it allows me to concentrate on focus.

    Matt, i watch your videos all the time. Subscribed. I learned early on when i was 17, now 69 years old, to ALWAYS include MOOD into your photos. I started out doing photos in the Everglades, in Florida,USA. Fog was my best friend. Like you,i got tired of all the weight, Nikon F2as, 4 lens, including a 300mm f2.8. What a toad. Now use a M10R, but mostly my M10 monochrome, with the Thambar 90mm,f 2.2. Love that lens. Also,picked up the LLL 50mm,f2,ll, on your recommendation, great old style results. And yes, i like this style of video, keep them coming.Great 2024,Sir.

    6:27 Careful with minimum shutter speeds on the basic M10! It does not provide you the ability to handhold shots at 1/15th of a second as you will be able to do with an analog Leica that has the horizontally moving cloth shutter! My rule of thumb for vibration free shots on my M10 is 1/2n focal length for shutter speed, even for non-moving subjects. The M10P, M10D and other bodies have the dampened shutter that might allow you more freedom with less vibration.

    5:27 Unless you use the live view, there is ONLY center weighted metering. And if you UNDERSTAND how center weighted metering works, you don't need any default exposure compensation to protect your highlights, because you would lock in the exposure by measuring either a middle grey exposure value in the scene by half pressing and recomposing (or dialing it manually on the top dials in the first place) or metering for what you want to be middle grey. The M10 works EXACTLY like the metered analog M6, M7 and MP bodies in that way. Most people who complain about the M10 blowing out highlights simply have never cared enough about learning how to use the center weighted metering.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  11 месяцев назад +1

      Very good tip, thanks! I'll be honest, i've always shot full manual so this experimenting is new for me. I thought I would try it so I could comment on the feature in the video. My setup worked great for quick grab shots in the street but for models i'll stick to manual as I often use more complicated lighting which will confuse the camera.

    • @BrunoChalifour
      @BrunoChalifour 11 месяцев назад

      Agreed with only centre-weighed metering (exception on M11). Now I have used M cameras for over 30 years and digital Ms for about over 8 years, and as Matt recommends, I do also, most of the time, set the aperture compensation at - 0.7 for street or landscape photography. Doing so eliminates your need 90% occasionally blowing out highlights and there is so much one can get back from shadows it would be pointless not to do so. The visoflex is useful with lenses beyond 50 mm, working below f 2 for precise focusing, close-up focusing (0.7 to 0.5 m) and seeing in BW while shooting with the RAW (to keep the color option) + JPG in black and white.

    • @BrunoChalifour
      @BrunoChalifour 11 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks Tobi! I had a quick look on LR.. the later snow photos were from ISO400-6400 (later was darker so at 1/250 f4 it auto-selected higher ISO). The toning is the new M10 presets i'm working on so i'm glad you like them. I know you shoot more models but the 25/4 LTM is so good on a RF camera! (Has 3 soft stops, 0.7, 1.5, 3m I think). How all RF lenses should be! Very light too.

    The calibration issue is relevant, when using e.g. the old Soviet lenses, like the fantastic Jupiter 8. I fixed it on the Jupiter 8 by opening up the lens (easy to do) and inserting a (thin) paper spacer between the two parts of the lens. Incredibly, it worked. Another lens I have, a tiny Leica 90mm 2.8, is more difficult. It is always unsharp at infinity and 2.8, and I consistently have to stop down to f8 or more to get sharp photos using the RF.

    Matt, you made the finest photographs of trains and the railway world, showed
    on the You Tube channel ever.
    A very clear impression of perspective, composition of plains, linesand BW tonalities.
    Did you, like I did, study The Fountain Press booklet:
    How to photograph trains, published in London in 1962,
    price 5/6?
    The book gave information on cameras, like the Miniature 24x36 mm, the Folding 6x9 cm
    and the Press 4x5 inch models.
    Those were the days: a fast Ilford HPS emulsion, an orange filter for the contrast between
    the steam clouds and the blue sky, a short exposure time for a sharp image.
    Nobody had to worry on bokeh, aperture blades, soft focus, a wide f/ 1,1 aperture, DOF, zone system, graded ND filters, multi coating or push and pull processing.
    My last Ilford glass plates had been developed in the largest photo laboratory/ photo studio
    of the Netherlands in Rotterdam in 1967.
    Today everybody is thinking he is a photograper. I bet, one day somebody will have a
    huge problem with his 4x5 inch large format view camera, recently bought with a
    dozen of expired Ilford HPS glass plates:
    "How must I bend my exposed 4x5 glass plates to get them into the developing spiral of

    Great video! Poland in the snow is beautiful. If you have faster lenses - f/0.95 or f/1.2, say - I think you'll need an EVF so that you can focus accurately when shooting "wide open." I'd rather have an M camera with an EVF attached than a through-the-lens SL2 which doesn't need an EVF. Also, I know you were not shooting in the rain, but I don't believe Leica M lenses are waterproof. I'd be careful with water.

That's what made me "re-love" M cameras and order the M10. Use a 1.4x magnifier to help precise focus (see the view I did recently). EVF work too ofc, but I want to keep my M like a classic M. I have been shooting with the M10 and it's Mono cousin since their release and I still wrote down 11 of your tips. This led me to subscribe to you. I have a tip for you: When shooting in snowy conditions use a hood hat (search the term on B&H). Q?: is the model @ 9:39 Elena Koshka? Also, would you be willing to do a video devoted to helping visoflex-dependent M10 shooters wean off of it and become adept with the optical VF? Especially getting the exposure spot on? I miss decisive moments because live view requires a fraction of a second to close the shutter before activating it at your chosen speed. Thank you for the many helpful tips and for considering my video request. Highest regards, Joe Cunningham

      @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks for considering a ‘lose the evf” video. My motive in requesting it is that I also have an M7 and rarely use use it (almost never) because I feel like a stranger in strange land and I’m a focus peaker and, mainly, I’m never confident that my exposure will be correct and so I always default to the M10 for those reasons and miss out on the film experience, and the inherent beauty of it. For what ever reason (perhaps grain?), film photos look more fixed in time, whereas digital photos look more like they could be a frame from a video.

    Wow - extensive video, great!
    I recognise that sensation when you’re travelling & everything is beautiful and you just enjoy shooting everything. It’s a wonderful phenomenon.
    Now what I find very interesting is that you mention the relatively slow f4 lens allows you to use the m10 as a real point and shoot camera, as almost everything will be in focus with distance set at 1.5m. Am I right to assume that this doesn’t apply to a faster lens stopped down to f4? As you can guess this question comes from a Q2 owner and i don’t think this would work when I stop down from f1.7 to f4.
    But then, the downside of a slow lens is you will run into difficulties when shooting with low light or even doing night photography, no? I mean, do you use shutter speeds of 1/250 at those occasions while still keeping iso low enough to prevent noise? (I find the Q2 quite noisy and the grain is less attractive than on my Leica SL.) it would be great to see the photos that you shot in more detail (perhaps they’re on Flickr?).
    Finally, regarding your remark of the crop advantage of m10r, yes that is definitely a pro, but from my experience with the q2 I can also tell this comes at a price, as the higher resolution will be unforgiving when there is any camera shake. I guess one can’t have everything!
    All best from Amsterdam,
    J

      Thanks J! Yes I’ll try to post some street photos on Flickr. Yes it’s simple physics so any 25mm lens at F5.6 at 1.5m will have the same depth of focus. The wider the lens the more depth. Great point on M10R and yes if you saw my Q-Q2-Q3 video the Q2 is not great in low light.

    It is always great to see a new video from you on a rainy film scan/editing day, Matt! I wish it snows here more often, it is truly beautiful to photograph in the snow, maybe because it is rare here. I cannot agree more about having a digital M for any film M photographer. I got my M240 because I was inpatient when I send in my M3DS for CLA, and it was THE best photography decision I made in over a decade. The intuitiveness of the M is an open invitation to photograph the world around us. I had been taking photos since the 90's on film to now, and the M changes me so much as a photographer, even in 6 months time. I always worried so much about setting when I take a photo, shutter speed aperture, exposure, etc. Now when I go out for street photos, I set the M on auto ISO and shutter speed then just emerge myself purely in the photographic experience. Of course there is still a time and place for technical photography, but I now leave that for my commercial work.The latest thing I learn is setting minimum shutter speed on auto ISO on the M; it will still compensate for us when ISO is max out, which is brilliant. I do however need to remember to take that out of auto ISO when I do model photography work to have a little more control.

    4:06 Unfortunately, that depends on some timing. I bought my Leica M10 used in good condition (some brassing, looks great) for around 4k USD about two years ago. I could not get that same amount when trading it back in against another purchase with camera stores, the M10 prices for the base model have dropped significantly lately. So buying one now is probably a great idea, selling not so much. That said, I do believe the basic M10 has the potential to become what the original M6 is now for analog film cameras - an evergreen classic. Everything about the original M10 is just perfect, it does not compromise or have weird quirks (e.g., software errors) like the M10R, M10P or M10 Monochrome.

      Thanks, yes excellent point on timing. I guess like the M8, M9 where prices dropped then kind of went back up. I made money after owning my M8 for multiple years, which was nuts. I do love the idea of the M10-P for the top plate and no red dot (and shutter) but I have no interest in touch screens. Sorry to hear about yours, I think the shop prices stay similar but they buy back for less so they can add a markup.

    Yes, it's more electronic, but the experience can be minimal to mimic a film camera, the shutter is super quiet, and the battery life is unbelievable. The design just looks so clean and the Fn buttons are ace.
    Some of the electronic benefits I feel are for the better:
    Light metering is more accurate - I have more photos I can use without any adjustments, which rarely happened with my other Ms. (As your comment about M film users needing to learn manual compensation)
    Fotos app and remote connection - the connection is reliable. I can turn on remote capture, pretend I am looking at my phone, but actually frame and take photos. I think this has helped to disguise and take more candid shots as my nerves are not at play!

    Thanks for sharing these usefull Tipps. I bought a Leica ME together with a Voigtländer 35 1.5. Honestly my whole experience shooting with a Leica Rangefinder system was not satisfying due to focus system and no real advantage over shooting with my mirrorless Olympus EM1 system. Even in terms of image quality i could not see any significant advantage. Color Science was disappointing to me. There is no Leica Look. IMHO the color science of my Olympus EM1 paired with zuiko lenses are far better and then Leica. Comparing images gave me this result. I have realised that I have underestimate the proficient MFT system and how good the zuiko pro glases are.
    Regardless of my so so negative experience with Leica ME i am still interrested in the Leica M10 system pairred with Voigtländer 40 1.2.
    Maybe i need to give it a second try and more practice?
    Question:
    Have you ever experienced the digital EM1 MFT system? Still it color science and the small form factor of body and lenses make this system relevant even in 2024.

This video was recorded with the GX85, Leica 15mm and Oly 45mm 1.8. Great small size system but I can take it seriously for 'real' photos. I just use for video. Not everyone likes RF cameras so perhaps Leica is not for you but I love how analogue and simple they are and the results too. They make me shoot more whereas my Lumix (M43 or FF) do the complete opposite as I don't value the images (even if as shown in one video, they can be the same as Leica photos). Hi I very happy for you, I would love to have a M10 black body and to travel like you, but I am just guy just getting by. Trying to get back into med school. Maybe one day I will be able to get one with Yahweh-God help. I believe I would like to travel more it look like more fun.

    I think you were smart to get the M10 instead of the M11. I don't think the M11 is fully stable yet. There's a guy on youtube called The F/Stops Here and he has gone through 6 M11's because of various issues with each of them and finally switched to the SL2.

    Hi Matt, it’s good to see you making good use of your M10. I don’t see that the M11 is much more electronic than the M10. It can be used w/o a VisoFlex2 EVF and w/LiveView off (i.e., strictly in Rangefinder mode).
    The Leica APO-Summicron-M 35 mm f/2 ASPH is indeed pricey, but I was fortunate to find one of those terrific lenses recently. Leica’s Summilux-M 50 mm f/1.4 is also superb. Both focus well below 0.7 m.

      The M11 is more electronic than the M10, starting with the electronic shutter (a first in an M model and a plus).

      @johnkasianowicz6536 11 месяцев назад

      @@BrunoChalifour But you needn’t use the electronic shutter. My point was that if you want to use the camera as mechanical device, that’s possible.

      @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom The M11 is pricey, and the cost will go down. I’m hoping to get the M11 Monochrom soon.

      @@johnkasianowicz6536 The way the sensor is wired is different. The way exposure is done is different thanks to the electronic shutter now all options are available (spot, center-weighed and zone metering). If you are working outdoors on a sunny day and want to take full advantage of your lenses at apertures below f2, the possibility that the electronic shutter. gives of going beyond 1/4000s is not to be looked down upon.

    All your tips are helpful, but the statement that stands out for me the most is that the M10 makes you (me) want to carry it and take pictures with it. I have another digital system that I use as well as my M10r, and that system works very well with autofocus that allows me to get shots I would not be able to with my Leica - but I don't LIKE to use it as much as my Leica

      Thanks Rob, yes! This is really important for me. I want to enjoy what I do so I select cameras (and lenses) that put a smile on my face! I'm glad it's not just me! (I have zero interest in my Lumix cameras but they can still take nice photos).

    Love these wide shots! I'd agree that the M10 series is the best digital M, with the M10-D being my favorite camera ever. I never miss the screen, and have the app if I need live view. I may someday pick up an M11 Monochrom, but I don't love the modernization of the M cameras starting with the M11.

      I used to have the same idea but after using the M11 Mono, for now 9 months since launch date, i don't really look back to the bottom plate. It feels closer to a black and white film cam because it is slightly slimmer, battery last so long now i don't need to switch it off after every few shots or do i need to bring many batteries. I just bring one extra, a power bank can charge it when I'm not shooting on the go. Amazing camera, shoot at 50,000 ISO and put noise reduction and it looks like film. I used it up to 125,000 ISO before it starts getting destroyed. Wish there was an M11-MD but with high megapixels, focus shift may be a bummer

      Thanks Allena, yes I like the M11 black weight, USB-C, battery and I guess if I ignore many of the modern extras I could enjoy it the same as the M10 cameras.. I think the size is the same as the M10s but I might be wrong. (I forget)

      @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Yeah the dimension is the same but the screen and buttons on the back are little bit more flushed so it felt like it is less thick 😂. Used M11 and used M10R cost pretty similar used now here in Singapore. Also since the M11 is being discontinued, what i think is they are moving forward to the M11-P so those who wants the red dot logo will have to wait for the next M11 variant or get the M11 with less storage and toughened glass instead. For the same price brand new, wouldn't make sense to buy the M11 😂 Plus the Leica engraving on top is superior to the red dot. Also might mean the product cycle is getting shorter which made me pretty surprised, usually Leica takes a longer time between each model

      @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I may be mistaken, but isn’t the M11 full-time live view, like every other mirrorless camera now? That’s why it has sensor based metering and electronic shutter? It’s probably nice, but it’s not like a traditional M.

    If you need absolute silent shutter, get an M11. It doesn’t work well on moving objects but inside a train (or a church when doing weddings etc) the electronic shutter has no sound. Understandably, those who have had problems with their M11 complain loudly and it’s not really acceptable for a camera that costs this much to have problems. That said, many M11 users like myself have not had any problems so we don’t complain!
