To find the right exposure with an M can indeed be a bit tricky. Generally, you’re best off by underexposing 2/3 of a stop during daylight. The M11 behaves quite different from all previous M’s. It reads the exposure directly on the sensor (like most other mirrorless cameras) rather than the shutter curtain (with the white spot) and a separate light sensor found in the M10 and older models. Fuji actually is the other way around. Since Fuji is one of the few brands that calibrate the lightmeter using a 18% greycard (rather than the common 35% greycard), they tend to underexpose. Fuji did this because the older 12 and 16MP sensors were very sensitive to blown-out highlights and a bit of underexposing protected these highlights. So now, they give the best exposure by overexposing around 2/3 of a stop during daylight.
This is fascinating. Metering on the M240 drove me nuts. I always had comp at -1/3 to -2/3 a stop. It uses a grey slat on it's metal shutter curtain to meter off of. If that's true what you say about the M11 then that is almost worth the price of entry (not really though lol).
I like your presentation and images. Thanks for creating and posting them here. The whole “Leica look” is a combination of the lens and the camera. It was a pre-owned Summilux-M 50mm ASPH lens, available at a nearby camera store, that I tried on pre-owned and demonstrator M9 and M Type 240 cameras, that pulled me into adding the Leica M system. I decided to buy the lens, before I knew which camera I would be adding, upon which to use it. I scuttled plans to buy a very large, very expensive Nikon telephoto lens, in order to buy a new M10, along with the Summilux-M 50mm ASPH. Now, 4+ years later, I have no regrets.
I bought an M10 during the pandemic and simply love using it. The M10 also brings much snappier response time when only using the optical rangefinder. I tend to get very different and more unique photos than when I use my Fuji system (x100f and xt4). Highly recommended for those who are looking for something like the m10. Oh and you can pull RAW over Wi-Fi straight into Lightroom mobile. Which makes it so I can leave my laptop and iPad at home while on trips.
Great review. I use a M-P240 and love the handling of it. As a press photographer I often get in situations where the C mode is handy. Fiddling into the menu to find the setting is too time consuming. Not all M-mount Leica lenses can be used on the digital bodies and some are not recommended to put on the digitals because of the very close distance to the sensor, Meister Camera in Hamburg explained to me, when I was interested in a second hand 2.8/21mm. I ended up with a 3.8/24mm and this turned out to be an excellent buy. The Summilux 50 and Summarit 90 are completing my M-set. All this fits in the Bellingham Small Headley, as you already mentioned. My backup camera is a Q, but after watching your video, I might turn my M240 in as part exchange for a M10. Keep on rolling.
I only just recently found out Fujifilm had different manual focus assist modes like split prism etc. I never knew what manual focus was like until I borrowed a friend's Leica M-something (I'm not familiar with Leicas). Experience was pretty game changing, and far superior to peaking which often isn't accurate enough. Funny how we can have ultra accurate computer mouse but focus by wire is still pretty bad on any system. I kinda wish Fujifilm would make a new line maybe of fully manual lenses that had electronic communication to pair with their X-Pro and X-E series. Would be cool if it worked like SLR lenses where focus is done open and stopped down automatically when shooting. Strip off the motors, keep the optics, maybe make the aperture click/declickable so it'll be attractive to video shooters too.
This was an interesting take to hear. I've only seen a handful of videos of user critique about Leica that actually talks about pretty big deal-breaking flaws. I can't believe that the WB and Exposure is frequently wrong with the m240. That seems so fundamental to me.
The M240 white balance was a pain! Used to annoy me a lot and it’s such basics! The M11 has fixed the over exposure issues now as it exposes off the sensor like other cameras have done for years
Just waiting for delivery of my newly acquired M10, so watching a lot of vids to gen up on it. So thanks for this one Goughie, its a great help. I would say a couple of things. For travel I have eventually arrived at carrying a Leica Q, it is awesome for night and close focus and street and also subject isolation and ok for landscape and architecture with a bit of care. If I was like you bringing all that M10 kit on hols, I would also pack one of my Ricoh GRiii's (probably the GRiiiX which 40mm equiv). As it is hands down the best pro level pocket/street camera with lovely raw files and will give you great results close up (the GRiii is better which 28mm equiv) and not bad at night. It will sit snugly in your bag with the rest of the gear. I picked both of mine up for £650 a pop on eBay almost new.
Glad you enjoyed! Did have a Leica Q, ultimately the X100V was a camera that fitted that slot for me better so I’ve kept that instead. Same with the Griii, I’ve never owned it but I’d ’d rather have the X100V i think
Great review. Spot on on the M240 vs M10 differences. I made the same jump in late 2020 and I don't regret it. Congrats on the two Lux lenses as well. I picked up a 35 Lux FLE for a good deal this week as well (35 summicron for sale :) ) Happy shooting!
Nice review .Covered all the important points.Been a Leica user over 20 years M3/2/4. with 50 ,28 ,90 and just bought the VL 50/1. For digital I use the CL with its native lenses and an SL2s. Of course I can use my M mount lenses on both those bodies too and do. However been toying with getting a digital M .It would seem from your experience that the M10 would be the only sensible consideration. Its a big outlay though and I`m not sure it would offer much over what i`m using now.Certainly it would be less flexible in terms of glass. I need af for some of the sports work although prefer the M glass . I guess for the while I`ll continue to use the M glass on the CL and SL2S . Thanks your review has been helpful .
Nice review, you covered all the points a photographer needs to know as opposed to the usual statisticians review out there. I think the M10 is a brilliant camera overall and regret selling mine even though I had no choice as it was a case of needing funds for a car purchase. The M10-P with the Leica hand grip was the perfect handling camera for me and if only I could afford to buy one again. Worst thing about the M240 for me was it was just so fat, I’d go from my film MP to it and it just felt alien whereas the M10 feels almost the same.
Really nice video that sums up everything you need to know about the M10. You also really get everything out of the files. Really great pictures and grading. I was in wetzlar a few weeks ago because I wanted to know for myself how a digital M feels compared to my m6. I had tried the M10 M10R and M11 and was really amazed how analog they felt. The M11 was another really big step up from the M10. Together with the summicron also almost 13,000€ around my neck. that makes you really nervous. :D
Great video mate! Just got myself and M10 with a summarit 35mm and 50mm. This is my first Leica and super happy with the purchase. I’d be keen to see some videos with shooting tips. Some focus cues and how you approach manual shooting and framing.
I started in the Leica system recently with the Q2, but recently swapped over to the Mono version which provides a totally different - unique! - experience. I absolutely love it. This was my "cheap" entry into the Leica ecosystem, saving the full digital experience of the M system for when I'm better prepared to afford not just the camera, but the multiple lenses "required". Will it be the 11? or 12+ by the time I'm ready?? No matter - all good!
Happy to hear that you enjoy your M10 ! Your Photos with it are very beautiful. I am also very happy with my M10P, the only thing I am missing from the FujiX100V is the close focusing distance. So I am really stoked about the Leica 35mm f2 Apo summicron with its 0.3m close focusing distance but the price is just incredible but I think Leica will make more lenses with better performance in that regard. Peace and love from Germany
No mention of two Big changes: 1/ the Bigger Larger Brighter viewfinder, it's a clear advantage of the M10 vs M240 or even M6, and the quieter shutter !
Nicely done Goughie. I’m loving my M9, I’ll get an M10 or better one day, and I can definitely notice a change in my approach with my workflow since owning it. I’m loving using it a lot. I’m currently testing ISO invariance of the M9 and your comments about poor ISO performance on the M240 made me wonder how the M10 fairs in this regard. Might be worth a test.
I know what you mean about the Leica lenses, it's hard to put your finger on it but there is a difference. I find that they often look 3D as the separation between the layers in the images are cleaner and crisper.
Recently made the switch from the 240 to this as well. Id say all the points you made are spot on. One of my gripes is how difficult it is to actually lift and unlock the iso wheel, it requires a good amount of force on my copy of the m10 so I mostly just leave it in auto. As for metering, there are a couple modes, I’ve changed mine to spot metering so that way if I ever shoot anything backlit, I just aim the center at the shadows and keep the shutter half pressed to lock the exposure, compose and fully press, works like 80% of the time 😂 Every now and then, I wonder what it would be like if Leica started changing the mechanics of their bodies and lenses to focus down to SLR levels like 0.3 meters, thatd be something. I think the thing I like the most is the slight weight difference, I feel like I’m getting a little less neck strain with the m10, maybe its just me.
Some of the new Leica glass does now focus at 0.3m I think the new 35mm APO is an example if you can stomach the price! But you have to use the EVF! I guess closer than 0.3m you’ll always have parallax issues! But Fuji get around this quite well by moving the frame within the finder Agree the ISO dial is pretty tough to move! And the M11 I think has fixed the highlight issue, again at a pretty steep price aha!
If you are missing something magic with Fuji try the X-trans I sensor (xpro1, xe1 and xm1). I got all the X-trans sensors (I till IV) and only the I (and maybe II) give me the magic, filmic look. The newer the sensor, the more digital the image get. My xpro1 paired with some original glas (35mm 1.4 eg) is stunning.
Great video, articulate, succinct, and informative . . . and well structured, to boot ! Made me subscribe ! It's just too bad that the M10, and its variants other than the Monochrom and R, are no longer available new. 24mp is the sweet spot for me. Will be keeping an eye out for a decently priced one in the used market.
Great video, I agree with you the M makes you pick it up and shoot. I found myself shooting more family stuff then with any of my Fuji cameras. I did a recent video where I contemplate selling my Harley Davison for a M10. Let me know what you think. Keep up the great videos.
re: weather sealing, from what i understand, the M bodies, starting from 240 up, are all weather resistant, like rain and dust and stuff, but the lenses are not.
Great video! Certainly keeps adding to my increasing curiosity of how a Leica works and feels. Hoping to one day try one out (with the right budget too XD ) As always, your editing is amazing, and shared photos fantastic! Cheers mate!
I’m loving the M-P 240 it’s just got vibe. The highlight and other limitations are for me fine. The M10 is great i wish the prices would come down. It’s actually gone up since lockdown i would have expected it to tail off by now. Great combo you have there. I wonder what your thoughts are a year on.
the one upgrade that is not often talked about is the bigger viewfinder. i am looking to buy a digital M, and am wondering if the bigger viewfinder makes a significant difference when shooting.
I'd love to know your approach to editing M10 files. I find them very hard to get right, without spending too much time on them. Lots of people seem to like presets, but I've not found any that really work nicely.
Oh really! Coming from fuji raws that don’t work particularly well with Lightroom the DNGs have felt amazing. I do start with one of my own presets and work from there
@@Goughie Thanks! It's probably because it's been years since I played with any Raw files. The colour balance always looks off to me, even if I correct the WB. The last Raws I used was probably my Canon 5Dmk2, and before that my M9. I've been using Fuji OOC jpgs for years now, and they're just so easy to tune that last 5%.
Hey brotha ! Curious when you were showing shots comparing your images on the xh2s and m10 did you use the same lens or were your shooting Fuji lenses ? I’d be curious to see a video where you compare Leica glass images taken on both of those cameras to see if that Leica look transfers with the glass on the Fuji
Different lenses, I’ve got the adapter so it’s a pretty easy video to make and would be interesting. Only down side is the same lens will have different focal lengths due to crops, but the colour side will be interesting!
@@Goughie yes, the crop will be a tad different with the FOV, but I’d be interested to see like you said colors and if they still carry the Leica “glow” or as they say the “micro contrast” I personally have been shooting with the Voigt 35f2 ultron m mount adapted to my XT4 and the results are amazing. Something about that lens. 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼
With film prices the way they are it only takes a year or 2 for the cost of shooting an m6 to be more than an M10. Basically if you plan on using it an m10 is cheaper.
11:57 On the product page for the M10 Leica state that it is weather sealed. “Perfectly equipped to withstand light showers, dust & Co. Thanks to components machined from solid brass, the high strength of the M-10's full-metal, magnesium alloy chassis and scratch-resistant Corning® Gorilla® Glass, is built to effortlessly resist the adversities of everyday life guaranteeing enduring pleasure to the photographers. Further protection against light showers, dust and bad weather is provided by special rubber seals.”
Do you think tje new Hasselblad with their new XCD 38/55/90mm lenses with manual focus ring is as fun or still fun like a Leica M or it still going to feel like another mmurorless experience? So a Leica M never able to shoot something simple like food plate? How about the new lenses with 0.3m focus distance? How you shoot these food plates pictures in the video? Can you make a video what make a camera fun to shoot with?
Never tried a newer digital hasselblad so hard to answer! I do mention the new lenses, they are just very expensive, the video is 50mm f1.4 at 70cm, you can sometimes get it to work, just need to step away from the table That’s a good video idea! I’ll add it to the list!
If there is a Leica look is it generated by the lens or the Leica sensor or both. If you took the same image with the same Leica lens but use a Leica body first and then a Fuji body would they look the same?
No they wouldnt look same, both cameras have different colour science, the other big difference specific to Fuji is that Fuji do not have a full frame sensor camera so there will always be differences there So I think to answer the question pretty sure both parts are important, sensor and lens; and maybe even the corrections happening in camera
The biggest issue about the design of the ISO wheel is that it turns forever in any direction without a hard stop. You ALWAYS have to look down at it when setting it. That's annoying as ****.
Lovely camera and lenses but does all the money swinging around your neck make you nervous? I keep eyeing digital M but I do like the photos I get from my X-E4 so do I need another (very expensive) camera! I suppose need never really comes into the equation...😅
Interesting question tbh! So this set up was what pushed me over my threshold of what I was happy to carry without insurance, the whole kit is now insured with specialist insurance There is definitely no “need” when it comes to Leica!
I went with Ripe, but I can’t endorse them, was easy enough to sign up but haven’t made a claim Photoguard we’re the other one that seemed to have great reviews
@@Goughie not really.. shot the m11 and a fuji at the same event. Talent had a white suit jacket. Fuji’s dr400 mode created hilights with detail and color, with the highlight tone giving me a filmic roll off on the highlights. The m11 had no detail in the highlights and even clipped highlights. “Well why didn’t you underexpose the shot!?!” Because I’m not going to shoot incorrectly and have underexposed images to accommodate a shortcoming in the camera that simple software can fix. Fuji dr 400 does this. Even canon has a highlight priority mode just for wedding dresses that would clip in wedding photos without it. What would you do? Underexpose any image with the bride in it? 😱 The client would think you are nuts as you try to explain to them how you would fix it in post. Yeah right. There’s no reason why the exposure can’t be slid down a few stops in the dynamic range curve and have the software raise the mind tones and blacks. This would give digital sensors the headroom where max white would be at 80% of the max range, not 100. Anything over that is read as “whiter than white” in software, data retain, and interpreted with a curve to provide a falloff instead of a hard clip. Just like film. The cost? Some noise in the black…also just like film…something easily corrected with NR software. Unlike clipped highlights. Leica, please do something like this!

Regarding the flight. Do you take your cameras through as hand luggage?
Always! I’d never check them in
Hey brotha !
“Perfectly equipped

Thanks to components machined from solid brass, the high strength of the M-10's full-metal, magnesium alloy chassis and scratch-resistant Corning® Gorilla® Glass, is built to effortlessly resist the adversities of everyday life guaranteeing enduring pleasure to the photographers.
Further protection against light showers, dust and bad weather is provided by special rubber seals.”
I wish m10 can do video like m240 did. I know it was crappy, but sometimes I need to record video.
Maybe! Not sure I miss it personally but can see why other might!
Q3 for travel and macro?
The bigger battery of M240 weighs more. One reason I sometimes prefer bringing my M8.2 on sunny days.
Tnx!
I do mention the new lenses, they are just very expensive, the video is 50mm f1.4 at 70cm, you can sometimes get it to work, just need to step away from the table
That’s a good video idea! I’ll add it to the list!
If there is a Leica look is it generated by the lens or the Leica sensor or both. If you took the same image with the same Leica lens but use a Leica body first and then a Fuji body would they look the same?
No they wouldnt look same, both cameras have different colour science,
the other big difference specific to Fuji is that Fuji do not have a full frame sensor camera so there will always be differences there
So I think to answer the question pretty sure both parts are important, sensor and lens; and maybe even the corrections happening in camera
@@Goughie Thanks Goughie, very interesting.
I am considering a used M10 R for the 40 mg what is yours?
Megapixel wise? Mines 24
Did I recognise St. Albans Cathedral?
You certainly did!
The biggest issue about the design of the ISO wheel is that it turns forever in any direction without a hard stop. You ALWAYS have to look down at it when setting it. That's annoying as ****.
Hadn’t actually thought about that! Good shout, hard stops would be good
Lovely camera and lenses but does all the money swinging around your neck make you nervous? I keep eyeing digital M but I do like the photos I get from my X-E4 so do I need another (very expensive) camera! I suppose need never really comes into the equation...😅
Interesting question tbh! So this set up was what pushed me over my threshold of what I was happy to carry without insurance, the whole kit is now insured with specialist insurance
There is definitely no “need” when it comes to Leica!
Another video that's pushing me closer to getting a red dot...
I’d understand if you un-subbed 😂
what insurance did you get?
I went with Ripe, but I can’t endorse them, was easy enough to sign up but haven’t made a claim
Photoguard we’re the other one that seemed to have great reviews
I don’t care about only experience! If it doesn’t perform well and it doesn’t gave me the results i am looking for well I don’t care.
The latest one is always going to have more features and be better, M11 is better than M10.
That battery made in indonesia 🎉
Interesting spot!
Sell the m10 and get the m11!! 🤣
Don’t suggest that 😂 this M10 has me looking at the M10-R, I’ve been avoiding anything and everything about the M11
@@Goughie ….oh did I mention selling the m10 to get the m11? 🤣🤣😱
Leica hilight blow out kiils it for me
It’s partly down to user error and the spot metre, the M11 apparently fixes it 😂
@@Goughie not really.. shot the m11 and a fuji at the same event. Talent had a white suit jacket. Fuji’s dr400 mode created hilights with detail and color, with the highlight tone giving me a filmic roll off on the highlights.
The m11 had no detail in the highlights and even clipped highlights.
“Well why didn’t you underexpose the shot!?!”
Because I’m not going to shoot incorrectly and have underexposed images to accommodate a shortcoming in the camera that simple software can fix.
