  • I love shooting with rangefinder cameras. I had the opportunity to shoot with the Leica M11 again here in Vancouver after helping to launch it last year. For the past few months, I've been using the Leica M10-R, mostly while on my trip to Germany and Austria back in the fall. Shooting with the M11 is the same, but also different. Wait for another video where I compare the two cameras head to head. In this video, I talk about the reasons why I shoot with the Leica M system, both digital and film, and which camera I would buy right now. Thanks to ‪@chrismeetschris‬ for helping me out with this video. Go check out his channel if you like cameras + coffee and Vancouver life.
    Thanks to ‪@CameraWestTV‬ and Leica Store San Francisco for the long-term loan of the Leica M10-R and 35mm Summicron. Look for more collaborations with them in the near future. Please visit their on-line store for all your photographic as well as horological needs:

    The smartest marketting decision Leica could make is allowing Take to borrow an M11 on a long term loan. Your photography is breathtaking, daunting and inspiring - all at once. You have always been a brilliant photographer and videographer, but this video was next level. Amazing.

    Some people aspire for a Mercedes Benz. I aspire for a Leica M camera…I agree with you completely. I’m from the era of manual focus where your ‘autofocus’ was your fingers turning the focus ring according to how fast your subject was moving. With enough practice and feeling comfortable with your camera… it was possible to be lightning quick and focus lock-on no matter what distance the subject was. Ahh, the good ol days lol

    Take, great video review, love your pics! Every time I take my M10-R out for a walk, it’s always a pleasure to shoot with, not unlike my Hasselblad (film) in the old days. The 41MP sensor of the M10-R is certainly overkill for what I need, but it allows me the option of cropping in post. The small lenses for the M cameras are also a big factor when deciding to choose between the SL2 system and the M cameras. For me focusing with manual lenses is something I’ve done since my first camera in the 70’s, so it’s both a pleasure and often an advantage. M10-R and lens in hand with extra battery, lens, Visoflex, memory cards in my small sling back and away I go. Keep up the nice work, always look forward to your videos!

    Great video as always. Yeah! I Love my M10-R. Even the jpeg SOOC are stunning. The only complain is the battery. Pretty poor number of shot per charge. I can see the advantage of the M11. To me, it feels more like the Q2 without EVF/AF but with a much better battery/ charging mechanism and superior resolution. Probably will give it a try later with a 35mm APO to take advantage of the resolving power. Also the digital crop is very handy, just like the that on the Q2. I think paring it with the 28 lux( or cron) for single lens travel would be fun…

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  Год назад +2

      The SOOC JPEGs are stunning from the M10-R. The photo of the trees was just that, other than slight exposure and contrast correction. As for battery life, the M11’s 1800mAh is much better than the M10-R’s 1100mAh, although using the OVF only can definitely last me the entire day.

    Had to give up my M10 and lens collection when manual focusing became a challenge due to eyesight. Replaced it all with a Q (original model) and haven’t looked back - I’ve always found the 28mm focal length the most natural, it’s a bit more inconspicuous (a real worry when you’re carrying around £15,000 worth of kit in your camera bag on holiday) and the results I get out of it are faultless.

However, I’ve been testing the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 recently, and this is the lens I used for this video. No it’s a completely different sound, The M11 shoots with the shutter initially open as it’s metering off the sensor, and then closes before the exposure, and at the end of the exposure opens back up to meter for the next photo. The M10-P meters off the shutter so it’s closed already at the beginning of the exposure and then after stays closed.

    If people understood how digital cameras work, they'd stop all this nonesesne about the difference in the look of this camera V that camera. At heart, almost of today's cameras use the same basic sensor technology, but coupled to different processors inside the camera to interpret the digital data. If the camera manufacturer has kept the 'RAW ' data Raw and has not massaged it to oblivion , you can make them all look like each other to a great degree. I have digital cameras in all sesnor resolution and sizes from all the relevant manufacturers, and I can make them all look like each other with ease in post. This is very different from the good old film photography where emulsions were fudamentally different to each other and the look of the photograph very much depended on the emulsion and the ambient lighting conditions, rather than the make of the camera. Good photography, though. Very enjoyable.

I love my X-Pro3 in Dura Black and I'm never selling it. There are definitely many similarities between my X-Pro3 and the Leica M cameras, I mean the design of the X-Pro is basically from the Leica M (Fujifilm has admitted this publicly). However, there's still a difference, The compact lenses available in Leica M is amazing, and having a truly manual focusing lens, not focus by wire, and a true rangefinder focusing system (not a hybrid viewfinder), gives you a different shooting experience.

      an Apple Watch has a 1000 more functions than a Rolex. I know which one I'd prefer. A lack of features is WHY we purchase the Leica. @@Unknownresident621 you could have the lack of features in a more reasonably priced alternatives (Nikon Zfc with lots of mechanical dials), so your decision to use Leica probably is also be based in part on legacy fame ... • @Unknownresident621
      @Unknownresident621 Год назад +1

      @@henrikf.1247 I understand - of course with everything we purchase there is a view on the brand. This is why people choose a BMW/Mercedes/other over something else. Or a Mont Blanc pen over a Bic. Or a Rolex over a Casio. For the cameras - I've had everything from Nikons to Sony to Ricoh and yes I was initially attracted by the brand of Leica - but soon realised it made me enjoy the PROCESS of photography immensely more than the other cameras.
      And that's down to the lack of distractions. I have EVERYTHING on the Leica I need for MY type of photography. I'm not doing wildlife/sports where I need 50 frames a second or 30 in camera filters to make the photo look like something else. I love my street photography/capturing life and my perfect 'meditation' is headphones on, walking the streets of a city, shooting street life/people. And for that, there is no better camera than my rangefinder. Because of zone focusing, I can focus and shoot any scene faster than the fastest of autofocus cameras. And that's perfect for me.

      I guess one has to always be aware of their surroundings with whatever you have. I've heard of people having their sneakers stolen, but the robber really needs to know what they're stealing. I have other buddies who wear $300K Rolex watches while walking around. Again, a robber needs to know what they're stealing. If so, the person is targeted, and there's nothing they can do. Personally I've never overly worried about being robbed while shooting. I am always aware of my surroundings, and when I see someone looking at me or following me, I immediately go into retreat mode. Maybe this is a good topic for a video...

I know many who cover over their Fujifilm or even Sony cameras when they travel to places where they feel that any branded logo could attract undue attention. Again, I don’t know how effective that can be if you’re a photojournalist in a developing nation or war zone, but I know some do.
