I grew up in Bushwich, our rent was like $500-600 tops, even in the early 00s, its wild to see ppl pay this much to live in an area that ppl were literally dying in.
@@shoppingintheusa7030 It was an area that suffered a major economic downfall after WWII. It has a really rich history of multiple cultures/immigrants, but also got pretty abandoned by businesses and violent in the late 70's and into the 80's. So the major influx of gentrification to the area is a huge contrast to even just 20 years ago.
As a young man in Bushwick in the 80s, I saw dead junkies outside my home, my cousin strung out on crack giving strangers blowjobs on Flushing avenue. Knickerbocker ave was so thick with drug merchants they gave the street its own name “The Well”. Bushwick was a disgusting dirty forgotten part of NY. And absolutely no one knew where Bushwick was.
My first time in New York was for a lookbook photoshoot. I flew there by myself from LA and once I landed and checked into my hotel, I simply walked around for a bit and started sparking up conversations with the artsy looking locals. Small talk turned into invitations to be shown around the city. Long story short, I ate and drank and partied the night away with amazing people until the sun began to illuminate over the grey streets and astonishing architectural landscape. It felt quite cinematic. Til this day I think about how special my first encounter with New York was and why it will always have a place in my heart.
I’d like to see more people who have been living here for generations and actually have turned these places into homes. Not just “creative spaces” with a bunch of plants and random artwork.

For me too. I live in the desert outside LA. I might as well be in a different universe. Channels like this are keeping me going while I explore other living options.
This is one of my favorite tours yet. As a former dancer, I love all the open space, and that mirror is sick! Tara has a great eye. Beautiful Matisse-inspired throw on the gorgeous sofa too. More, please!
@@Dlkny321 God that's so rude - she apologized for that and she's obviously trying. I have no idea why vloggers have such vindictive subscribers. I swear you guys follow these girls just to revel in their mistakes, it's really weird and sad.
@@Dlkny321 Obviously, you don't know much about history. Gentrification saved Bushwick and many New York neighborhoods. In the 1970s, Bushwick and many neighborhoods got into serious trouble after the 1977 Blackout. Arson, looting, riots and vandalism were rife and close to half of businesses shut down and thousands of people left. Half of the people were on welfare. While living in NYC it was sometimes hard to swallow spending almost 30k yr on rent bc at the end of the year have nothing to show for it. Well, nothing but a rent increase.
Some people enjoy the process of renovating and if they stay there for a while it must be worth it to them ✌️if you pay that much already you might as well make it as nice as you can 🥰
some people invest their money in a business or crypto. I don't agree with it but thats what they do. These people are losing out on the benefits of home ownership. Eventually they get pushed out of the neigborhood as they get older and cant afford the rent.
Love her minimalist style, it's not the typical you'd see and has clean lines but also character. Also, according to some research...." Canarsee (Canarsie) was a Brooklyn tribe of Lenape, part of the Delaware Nation that lived in most of what became Kings and Queens counties. Their primary occupation was hunting and gathering with specialties in fur trading and fishing. The name Canarsee in the Algonkian or Lenni language means “fenced in community.” So this tribe also extended throughout queens and bk for "history"
This is my favourite series on this channel! ❤️Love how you’re learning more about doing the history section as well. Would love to hear more about the indigenous history of places as well.
I love the history section, however let’s discuss true history. It is important to address which Native American Tribe the Dutch stole this land from. The Dutch did not discover this land.

Tara has videos on her page of her renovating this apt. her and her ex did everything themselves like painting the floors etc. she was lucky that her landlord is cool with it bc she is adding value. This loft will go for 3k+ when she moves out

I like that you added some history, but I also wish you would have commented about the red lining in Bushwick and the white flight that happened when new immigrants were moving into the area. If anyone is interested in the history of that, feel free to look more into that
Amazing apartment, love to see that it doubles as a home and a creative space! As a Finnish person I loved seeing the Alvar Aalto vase and Marimekko bag haha! 🥰
Dear Elena Could you please ask Tara more details about the bed, because it's exactly, what I want, but I thought that these were two matrasses, one on top of the other, but did she say something about a low boxspring or something?? I would be eternally grateful, if you can find out !!!! Thank you in advance
This is dope. I'm currently moving into a new place and have been trying to be very intentional about how I set it up, in the most refreshingly minimalistic way. especially since it's not my dream space. Maybe 2 years, tops.
I just love the fact she is from Ireland living in Bushwick, New York. Were there any Irish settlers back in the day? History has it lots of Italians and Jews settled the place but I beg to differ.
The apartment looks pretty cool, its spacious and white colors especially floor brighten up the whole thing. I would add base moldings to cover the gaps, prolly litte coffee table in front of couch would be nice addition. Thelast thing i wonder are lights? the whole apartment has windows only on one side so doesnt get much light especially during winter time when the gloomy weather knocks to your windows. I think some string lantern edison lights would work here toadd some magic to that place. :-)
I love how the all white interior and lack of wall separation makes the place look so much bigger. Also, Elena, your video quality is amazing!!
