    It would be really cool to see the people you feature also talk about gentrification if they live in a neighborhood like Bushwick. Like to hear them discuss further how they reckon, acknowledge, or navigate living in neighborhoods where Black and brown folks/families are being displaced and priced out, in favor of young creative 20 somethings like them would be super insightful. As someone who grew up one neighborhood over, it was honestly a little weird when they were talking about what it was like living in Bushwick, gentrification wasn’t mentioned or acknowledged because this is a major topic of discussion in the community. This isn’t to criticize the video, be mean, or anything like that, but hopefully something to consider in future videos!

    • @MishiVel
      @MishiVel 4 года назад +80

      Yes... exactly as a Bk native gentrification is a major issue. All the residents who’ve been living in these areas all their lives are all of a sudden moving out of neighbors that “young creatives” move into. Long term residents/ natives in Bushwick and lots of other neighborhoods are suffering because when a new person moves into their predominantly black/Latin neighborhood rent prices sky rocket, leaving these residents unable to afford to stay in their homes where they’ve lived all their lives. Don’t get me wrong your video is good, but this is something that you should consider when making these videos or at least acknowledging this topic.

    • @carolbenson8963

      Totally agree. My family is from queens and I often get nervous about this too. Gentrification displaces people from their homes they’ve known for years due to rent raises. It happed to my aunt who lived between park slope, Brooklyn and sunset park. Gentrification led to her building being bought and the rent nearly tripling literally. I really enjoyed this video ,but mentioning a neighborhood like bushwick like that should’ve come up.

    I have lived in bushwick my entire life and honestly years ago no one would even step foot into bushwick because of the rep it had. I love my neighborhood despite how gentrified it has become . It sucks that it took a bunch of outside natives to see change. I live in the same area this video is filmed & it is very family oriented. This area was dominated by puertoricans & to see that majority of my fellow neighbors have been pushed out by gentifiers who don’t really know the culture behind bushwick is kinda frustrating. For them to say that rent is affordable is insane & is the exact reason why my neighbors can no longer afford to live here. Over $3000 in rent is not affordable if you need to have several roomies to cover the cost. Majority of these landlords won’t even rent to families with children because they would 1. rather rent to these “artsy” gentrifiers & 2. A 2-3 bedroom for a family of 5 (small kids included) will be way too expensive for a single mom or just working class ppl ingeneral. It’s mind blowing. As a bushwick native it hurts, before moving into a neighborhood please try to learn & educate yourself on the culture. It’s not just a “vibe”

      totally agree. How could they call something affordable when it takes 3 adult women with well paid jobs to make rent? Would either of them be able to live on their own and still live the lifestyle they are accustomed? If the answer is no then it is not affordable. I’ve lived in Bushwick all my life and the “culture” that ppl speak of when moving to Bushwick is all but wiped out and replaced by your own “culture”. But then again we should be use to your Colonizing tendencies.

      Not from ny but the same is happening in Houston. Rent has tripled and a lot of people that now live here are people that originally moved here for “cheaper” living not to mention they stay talking crap of the city! And yea they only live in certain areas bcus of the “vibes” it’s annoying. And I agree these grown women with decent paying jobs living in a crowded space ..I could never.

    I dont mean any offense, but I really wish you guys talked about the recent and rapid gentrification of Bushwick, because as friendly and nice and incredibly sweet (they really do seem sweet) your friends are, it kind of irked me that there was no mention whatsoever of gentrification and their participation in it. I remember going there two years ago, and I was shocked by the clear divide between those who still lived in poverty and the privileged people buying and renting out apartments. In the span of two blocks, you see houses that look like they are crumbling right next to luxury apartment complexes. I was just so perplexed as to how anyone can feel comfortable moving there because of their cheap rent, knowing that they possibly contribute to gentrification and later, the displacement of people that lived there their whole life.
    Obviously, gentrification is such a large and complex theme and subject, and I know that recognition wont do much for the actual problem, but I find that the ommission of it is kind of dangerous and a bit ignorant.
    But thats only my opinion, Im not a new yorker or someone from bushwick.

    This is insane gentrification. I'm not from NYC but from Long Island. But I've grown up going to NYC, specifically Harlem, Washington Heights, and Bushwick. These neighborhoods often have their own special culture/community. When affluent people like yourself move to these areas, you disrupt this culture, often raising rents leading to many POC and/or poorer residents being forced to move out. The video itself was lovely, but this acknowledgment would have been nice.

      This is the same argument used by anti immigrant groups in Europe just repackaged. Communities and culture shift in cities. Bushwick was historically a working class German and Italian neighborhood before Latinos moved in and changed the cultural landscape. Harlem was originally a Jewish and Italian neighborhood before the great migration of black Americans from the south in the early 20th century. Generations of New Yorkers have seen shifting demographics and the loss of “their own special culture” in their neighborhoods, cities are not meant to be stagnant. That being said, affordable housing needs to be built in places like NYC and that goes straight to local government, and why voting in local elections is so important

    This feels so expensive to me but then I realize that I wouldn’t have a car payment/car insurance/personal property taxes on my car. That makes it seem a bit more doable! I don’t see myself ever willing to live in NYC and pay that much when I could have a nice house and a mortgage elsewhere, but I definitely love seeing other people live this cool life!
