Asia nailed it with "unless you tap into your feelings, you're just not getting it". In the era it was just lumped into "evil music", but when you listen to most Metallica, they just sing about dark topics that people don't like to discuss. Trapped Under Ice off this album is overlooked often, it's short, very fast, but conveys a feeling we've all had.
Trapped Under Ice is about Cryonics, the deep freezing of the body after death in preparation for being brought back to life. The process was a very hot topic in the eighties. Slayer also covers the topic in the track Cryonics on the Show No Mercy album.
@Chris Petenes - exactly this. Master of Puppets? A classic. Drug addiction, and a battle with it. Much repect for James Hetfield, as he was 23 at that time. Ride the Lighting? My god... the guy was 21.
I love Kirk's playing because it's an extension of the melody, not added on top to help him show off, his solos fit and fill the melody out instead of distracting from it. Aside from the playing method, the writing is outstanding from all sides.
Man. It may not be the most technical or blistering solo ever. But it’s always been my favorite guitar solo of all time. It’s their longest. And takes you on a RIDE.
I love her face enjoying and trying to follow the structure and complexity of the solo; that moment when you realize that you are hearing something amazing and want to know more.
This is off their best album too, imo. I saw them play live on this, their second tour. They were not well known back then, and the crowd was 3400+ people jam packed into a venue with the capacity of only 3000. It was wild, and i was at the front of the stage, literally, 'hands on the stage'. It was general admission, no chairs, just an open floor, with bleachers on each sides. I was standing probably 10 feet from Cliff Burton on the left side of the stage.
Thank you, guys.as an old school metal and rock fan,I respect people like you guys.respect other genres of music even though it's not your cup of whatever...at the end of the day music is universal. No judge,no classification whatsoever.thanks guys.
I didn't get to experience this until 1986 but when I did, it blew my mind and opened my eyes to some great new music. Colors seemed brighter and everything seemed as it should be. Loved your discussion at the end, thanks!
*I saw them Live in San Francisco in early '83, with both Dave and Cliff, and have been a fan ever since. They were so different than what the Rock Music Scene was offering at the time. They were mind blowing and as soon as their album "Kill 'Em All" was released....I got it. It was on the same day that I bought FANG's "Landshark" album. FANG...another band frequently appearing in the SF clubs. BTW..."Ride The Lightning" is a term used for execution by the electric chair. The song is focused on an inmate on Death Row.*
There are definitely times when Metallica resonates with what's going on with me. The music is in sync with my situation. This helps me work through it. I feel understood. It's therapy.
This song and Master of Puppets were the first 2 songs I heard by Metallica back in early '86 when I was around 14. The San Diego station 101.5 KGB ran a show every Sunday night called Metal Shop with host Brian Shock. I would record the show (80's teen way of downloading music) and one night it was a two play night. First up was Master of Puppets then Ride the Lighting. I listened to that recording at least 5 time per day for a year. To this day I always expect Ride The Lightning to come on after Puppets, lol. Great reaction. \m/\m/
YESSSS!!!! METALLICA!!!! One of my favorites from them, actually this whole album is 🔥🔥🔥. Just imagine all band members were in their early 20's when they recorded this!!!!! I had the pleasure seeing them perform this live in 2017 in San Diego... My best concert I've ever been too. Hearing the audio is epic, but to see them in concert is PRICELESS!!!!!!! Hope to see them again in the near future... Asia said it right... It's metal to the 10th degree!!!!!!!!!!!!! If this music doesn't get you up out of your chair, something in wrong with you......
From the same album, listen to Creeping Death. It describes the pestilence that kills the first born sons in the Bible story of Moses. It’s lyrically and musically very well done.
Ride the Lightning composers: James Hetfield · Lars Ulrich · Dave Mustaine · Cliff Burton Ride the Lightning phrase: To be put to death by means of the electric chair. Primarily heard in US. Scores of inmates rode the lightning while he was warden of the prison.
Straight up 💯 BJ. Riding the lightning while sitting in a chair. Songs like this you feel the energy and vibe via the instruments as opposed to say, RnB where you feel the same things via the singers voice. Great reaction Asia and BJ ❤️
I was in a rock band when these guys first came out and my band members and I heard it and we knew we were in trouble..it was like the first time hearing the fVan Halen..IN 78..GAME CHANGER
BJ is on the right track. "Ride the Lightning" is a metaphoric term for being electrocuted in the electric chair. Look at the cover of the album. That is an electric chair on the cover.
Creeping Death is another good song on this album with high energy like this one. More of a slower song is Fade To Black....same album.....also really good.
I was a teenager when this album came out...even though they found a way to evolve with the times, I definitely prefer them during this time. They we're just raw and their music was savage.
I'm enjoying all of your content, mostly movie reactions. Wholesome folk exploring what we call our culture and it's fun to watch. A lot of this I've heard and watched too much myself, so I get entertainment watching others hear or see the first time, I'm jealous.
This was the 2nd song I ever heard from Metallica. 1st was FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE. By the time I hit the 3rd song on the album (For Whom the Bell Tolls) I knew Metallica was what I needed to be listening to. I remember (at 18 years old) feeling like, 'How have I not been listening to this music before now?!!! I've never looked back.
One of the best reviews I've ever heard. BJ nailed it with his ideas of a man on death row being led to the electric chair. That's what why I'm a big fan. Asia and BJ are the real deal. Keep bringing the noise
If you haven't been introduced to Cliff Burton's insane compositional skills. Welcome. Please check out my favorite Metallica songs "Sanitarium" and "Orion" off their greatest album "Master of Puppets"
You both have it right...its simply impossible not to move to the beat and guitar. When you see them live it blows you away how they can play like this for around 2 hours straight.
I love watching your post analysis. You guys really take the time to understand and vibe and interpret the music in your own way. That's what we all did when we were 14yrs old hearing this stuff. Literally same experience just 30yrs removed. All the love to you guys. Enjoy❤❤❤🤘🤘🤘
Distortion can be obtained by turning your amp up to 11 (out of 10). Basically really loud and it vibrates and distorts. However, that was way back. Now you just buy pedals and such that give it the crunch/distortion and other effects.

Hi ya, Asia & BJ!! They were heavy metal, like none other! Legendary band that gave it's fans several anthems!! Lars Ulrich plays the drums, Kirk Hammett played the lead guitar, and James Hetfield singing lead. This is young, hungry, nasty Metallica. When they were still this 'scary' band. A few years later they went full mainstream but this is still their underground era.

Metallica has some good instrumentals. Check out (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth, Orion or Call of Ktulu. They also have some good covers. Check out Last Caress, Stone Cold Crazy, Breadfan or So What?
I forgot how young James sounds! Still gritty but just a bit higher than now. No matter the decade however, I'll always ❤ them ! You MUST, and I'd love to see you both react to "Master of Puppets" LIVE in Seattle '89. You may have heard the song, but you've got to see that live performance. Because a lot of it IS satanic garbage….this isn’t
I like the song Escape from this album.
actually, the same is true about black sabbath.

Imagining they were only just 21 years old. This was their 2nd album. It’s just crazy how talented they are.
that is so bad ass! but if u think about it,all the great bands made thier best music between 18- 25.
Lol James was actually 19. Shits wild
You mean how talented they WERE, all that magic is gone

Nailed it!
I recomend "Orion" by Metalica. It's has a very different vibe. It's guitar driven and it is positively mesmerizing.
An instrumental, to be more precise.
As well as Call of Ktulu and To Live is to Die.
The Call of Ktulu is such an amazing song.
Yep I agree
Cliff's bass in the second half is some amazing stuff. Definitely my favorite instrumental.

this song was always their tornado of souls for me, just going on a wild ride with the song and solo
wait till you hear Cast Down the Heretic by Nile haha. It goes on for at least 2 minutes. The 2nd third of the song
I love her face enjoying and trying to follow the structure and complexity of the solo; that moment when you realize that you are hearing something amazing and want to know more.
This song is WILD. Solo is intense, and drum beats pull you many different ways. As rappers you guys kept the pace pretty well! 👍👍❤
Thanks guys for doing one of my favorite Metallica songs on, IMO, Metallica's best album. Gotta love that guitar solo, epic.🤘
These guys were in early 20's and wrote these masterpieces!
This was one of the best metal albums ever, definitely my favorite Mettalica album.
I saw them around 1988 in Vermont in a small auditorium. They had promised to visit every state, and they did. What a show. The Cult opened.
One of the hardest and best ever! This song along with a few others made them METALLICA 🔥🔥🤘🤘 Shock to the system ASIA!!! Love you guys rode it ⚡️⚡️⚡️

Another GREAT song by Metallica worth reacting to is “The Four Horsemen” from 1983.
Yes BJ it is about going to the electric chair. Just look at the album cover my brother!
Asia’s reaction to the solo was how I felt when I listened to Metallica to the first time 20 years ago and even to this day I still make that face lol
Guilty as charged
But damn it, it ain't right
There's someone else controlling me
Death in the air
Strapped in the electric chair
This can't be happening to me
Who made you God to say
"I'll take your life from you?"
Flash before my eyes
Now it's time to die
Burning in my brain
I can feel the flame
Wait for the sign
To flick the switch of death
It's the beginning of the end
Sweat, chilling cold
As I watch death unfold
Consciousness my only friend
My fingers grip with fear
What am I doing here?
Flash before my eyes
Now it's time to die
Burning in my brain
I can feel the flame
Someone help me
Oh please, God help me
They're trying to take it all away
I don't want to die
Time moving slow
The minutes seem like hours
The final curtain call I see
How true is this?
Just get it over with
If this is true, just let it be
Wakened by horrid scream
Freed from this frightening dream
Flash before my eyes
Now it's time to die
Burning in my brain
I can feel the flame
Asia and BJ great song you both are great jamming to these hard rock songs
The very first Metallica song I ever heard. This album came out on my birthday
07/28/84 > Happy Birthday to me 🤟

"Lightning going every where" lmaooo good one. Much love from la.
This album was originally titled "Metal Up Your Ass"! It definitely lived up to its original title.
That was kill em all no?
First heard this in 88 , just amazing stuff

I have an old original pressing with the green sleeve and also a copy of the Creeping Death single. How they both survived my teenage years I will never know.

This is my favorite Metallica album! Rock on
As a life long fan of these guys. .the best song they ever wrote was on this album.. Creeping Death
When Metallica began playing shows in L.A. in 1982, they were just 4 broke guys in their late teens/ early 20's w/ a band and a dream... play louder and faster than anyone before them, and get liquored up to raise hell 🔥🔥🤘🤘 In 1983, Metallica finally recorded their 1st album "Kill 'em all" and began touring the US in a rented van, trying to make a name for themselves. By 1984, Metallica made their way to Europe and had a new album written & rehearsed - their 2nd album 'Ride the lightning', which progressed into deeper, darker and meaner musical territory... I consider it their best record, cos there was nothing purer than that rage and aggression that they had put on tape w/ little money & nothing to lose.
Years later, when Metallica records would cost six to seven figures to make, they had lost that desperation that they had in their youth to make the best music possible...
Amen to this I could not say it better, this is pure raw rage put into musical form. By four supremely talented individuals.
