    In this video I outline how to use Alfred on Maddening in terms of classes, upgrades, passives, etc.
    This guide is aimed at the early/midgame. I will be making an advanced guide that covers emblem rings and endgame unit builds.

    I tried him as Avenir and Paladin and never worked for me, he's not fast or bulky enough to frontline. So I used him on Maddening as Great Knight and he become a monster and so useful unit with emblem Sigurd.

    Spear +5 (Marth engrave to frontline and counter everything from everywhere)
    Silver Greatlance +2 (Hector engrave to massive damage with override)

    If you play with dlc, Alfred can be a beast with Hector cuz quick riposte works really well with his strength and personal. Lifesphere from tiki allows him to heal by waiting which allows his personal to be active while bringing him back into quick riposte range. Assign decoy from soren is also necessary since Alfred won't be taking dmg when engaged and assign decoy is the only way enemies will attack him. So I'd say he's like one of the best enemy phasers with dlc but outside of that he's not very good.

    Reclassed him into griffin knight in fixed growth maddening. Around chapter 20 he starts working better as a griffin knight than chloe because her strength growth is so bad. Have to feed him kills and get canter on him before chapter 11. Highly mobile staff utility also helps him level and always gives him a way to contribute. You have to baby him on maddening but I feel like you have to baby most early game units on maddening (Alear, Jean, Anna) so I don't mind.

    Alfred has mostly average growths, so he a generally good unit in most cases.
    Weirdly enough he is one of the few units that takes the most advantage of tiki, his average growths in nearly all stats mean he gains more advantage of tiki with fixed or random growths. plus Alfred high luck stat becomes even better which helps out with both avoid and hit but I do wish his unique golden skill scaled off of luck, tiki also patches his bad res growth pretty well and his unique skill on top of the dragon transformation allows him compete with ike passive in being tanky.
    Speed taker + resolve as skills but he does have strength or speed problems without transformation early to mid game, So you can swap out a resolve for a atk or strength skill which really helps but waiting also help that problem and it heals. Geo + resolve + transformation = +17 res/def but this works on anyone.

    Wolf Knight on Alfred sounds like a solid plan to have him go around spreading poison early game if you manage to give him Canter after taking Sigurd from him and potentially make him crit things with a Killer Lance. Also Debuff enemies’ movement sounds good enough as well.

  • @WitcherSoda
    @WitcherSoda Год назад +2

    Wolf Knight is probably Alfred's best class. I did the math.
    If you reclass him at LV10 you get this spread:
    HP 30: STR 10.75: DEX 15: SPD 13.25: DEF 9: RES 6.25: LCK 10.275: BLD 6.5
    Now to come within spitting distance of Merrin Alfred needs about 10 levels on her. I call the build the "Merrin at Home "build. Alfred can be salvaged, but they really did make his bases too low. The low Build is particularly insulting.
    LV 10 Wolf Knight Alfred
    HP 36.75: STR 14.8: DEX 19.5: SPD 18.65: DEF 13.05: RES 9.85: LVK 15.675: BLD 7.4
    STATS VS LV 1 MERRIN

    It's strange that he's only lv 1 advanced going into ch 13. On my run Alfred was the first unit i promoted; he went into ch 8 as an Avenir.
    I also gave him the Marth ring after ch 7, since that's when Alear hit bond 10 with him. Break Defenses (and Divine Speed) fixes his early dmg issues.
    He immediately claimed Lyn's ring upon acquisition, not only for the sake of SP gain but also because the spd granted by Lyn is great for dmg mitigation. While she's his main emblem, he's also used Ike and Leif a bit. (Also some Corrin for the bond levels required to inherit Pair Up.)
    His main weapon since the midgame has been a Byleth engraved Killer Lance (I'd imagine you could do that with a Killing Edge instead if preferred). His main backup weapon is an Eirika engraved Ridersbane.
    I'm past ch 20 on my run, and now going around to do the emblem paralogues. Just finished Micaiah's, and Alfred held down the left side of the map with just Hortensia's help to keep his HP topped off (that left the other 10 units to hold the middle and right paths).
    So far i've given him a Skill Book, an Energy Drop, and a Dracoshield. And he's inherited Pair Up. He's been doing just fine as my main tank.
    Golden Lotus is nice.

    @warpuppy4528 Год назад +4

    I think I mentioned this in another video, but Alfred is one of my best units on my maddening run as a Great Knight with a defense passive from Ike and Arms Shield + from Lief.
    He loses most of his speed growth going into great knight, but that really doesn't matter. Sure you fight enemies with 50 attack sometimes, but that is completely fine. You can reduce that 50 attack by your 30 base defense, 4 more from Ike's +4 defense, 7 more from Lief's arms shield, and 3 more from the great knight skill allied defense and suddenly that 50+50 becomes 6+6. Most of the time when I can set up Arms Shield the enemies can't even do that much.
    That being said, Goldmary could probably do this build better, but I used Goldmary in my first run so I am trying out different units this time. Other than Great Knight, I would say Halberdier is the only other class I could see working well for Alphred.

    For the DLC side of things, personally i ran alfred with tiki after chapter 9 and made him into a hellebardier and hes been pretty good for me on fixed growths maddening, he is able to double, has pretty good defensive stats, if needed can wait to heal himself up with tikis passive aswell as triggering his own passive and is usually fast enough to not get doubled except by like swordmasters and such. Nothing else was given to him except the tiki ring and second seal for the reclass...well i suppose real life money to get tiki is also an investment.

  • @generalman9849
    @generalman9849 Год назад +1

    Alfred is one of the few units who has enough base strength growth to be useful on Wolf Knight while also having enough speed to double a lot of things… eventually. I gave him the Eirika ring + momentum which was enough for him to one round a variety of things… of course there’s a lot of units who can do the same thing, but few of them are best in a cavalry class, which provides a hefty boost to Twin Strikes damage. With Twin Strikes he was even able to take out a full health bar of a lot of late game bosses, which let me warp skip the difficult and annoying chapters 24 & 25. He also had enough HP + Defense to safely chip to enemy Wolf Knights so my other hard hitters could clean up.
    I think Paladin Kogetsu and both Paladin and Wolf Knight Rosado can do the same thing with less investment.
    Early game he filled the very niche position of throwing javelins from 2 range at archers without getting killed in retaliation (Louis could too, but Louis would be tanking in front, so…). Not really what you want to be doing with archers, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I did that often enough that I couldn’t just drop him, and then he got enough exp to promote, and then as Avenir he had the best Def-Res-Spd spread for a little bit, which made him the choice for luring in enemies when there were both physical and Magic units in the mix.
    It was fun watching his weak ass become one of my most essential units.

    I've just started my 1st Maddening playthrough. Haven't bought the DLC yet. Wanna do at least one Maddening playthrough first. I've been using Alfred mainly because everybody speaks badly about his performance on this difficulty and I want to experience that for myself. I only just completed Ch. 7, the bridge chapter.
    He's doing fine so far. He's the one using the forged Steel Lance +1, with Marth Engraving. That and Momentum means he hits stupid hard. Weaker enemies like mages and archers die in one hit. Otherwise some chip damage is needed. And the only character better than him at shrugging off hits on Enemy Phase is Louis. Most enemies ignore Louis, so Alfred has been the party's tank in a bunch of situations.
    He's got 855 SP, so he won't have trouble inheriting the skill I have in mind before Ch. 10. Most of my kills have been funneled into Alear and Alfred. Celine got a lot too, since choosing to not use her and Celica to nuke enemies in the early chapters seemed like a recipe for disaster. And Chloe has Micaiah since I wanted a flying healer to take some heat off of Framme's job. Chloe got a stupid amount of EXP and SP and is now ready to promote herself despite me not actively giving her attention.
    I'm actually surprised your Alfred only has just over 900 while you're at Solm, and he hasn't inherited any skills. Considering you said you were actively using him as your primary lancer instead of Chloe. That feels like a low amount.
    Now, I've never been one to try to fix something a character starts off bad at. I prefer to improve what a character can already do. Alfred starts off slow and wants to be bulky, so that's what he's gonna do. Screw his Speed stat. It was holding him back even on Hard Mode. He only became strong and useful when I focused resources into making him hit stuff really hard, even when he had to sacrifice is low-middling speed to do it. His personal class is already basically a Great Knight that dropped its Armor weakness and had its high physical bulk split between both Defense and Resistance.
    I don't expect him to ever turn into an amazing juggernaut on his own, or to be hard carrying the team. He's just one cog in the machine. My plan is to have him, Diamant, and Jade (as a Great Knight or Wyvern Knight, as long as she has Axe and Lance) inherit Arms Shield+, which is very cheap on SP, and establish control of the weapon triangle on both player phase and enemy phase. I'll have 2 swords, 2 lances, and 2 axes between the three of them to break enemies and take hits from disadvantaged weapons. That'll enable the characters I do intend to build as the big damage dealers to come in after them and land killing blows.

  • @Andigames235

    From what I've seen, if you want to make Alfred a good unit; your best bet is him on Griffin Knight. At internal level 11, these were the stats I had on him:
    HP 37(probably 32 because I used a seraph rope on him.)
    Build: 5 (you'll want to forge some lighter weapons for him.)
    Strength 12.
    Magic: 3
    Dexterity: 16
    Speed: 15.
    Def: 10.
    Res: 11 (He can comfortably tank some mages.)
    Lck: 12.
    It's a lot of investment to get him competent, but he ends up being a slightly tankier Chloe thanks to his good defense growths.
    Chloe will have 5 more speed but Alfred will have more defense. So not bad.

    I’m thinking of giving him Speed/Res 5 to completely round him out.

On random he’s not that bad fixed he struggles but most units early need an emblem ring to scale with good skills and killing capabilities. Vanilla Alfred on fixed maddening without emblem rings is terrible. He will never get enough sp to make a good skill set. Also try having him in halbredier give him a str drop or two and brave lane he will one round anything. There’s other options for him

    He starts off with 6 Spd.
    Alear and Jean start off with 7Spd at 4 levels lower than Alfred.
    Even if you level Alfred to 11, Amber's starting stats will still be better than Alfred despite having worse growths. That's how bad Alfred's bases are.

    Alfred is definitely one of the harder units to make work he's definitely better than Boucheron and Etie but making him a Griffen knight he becomes a decent backup with workable strength and speed and access to staves, or since he has one of the higher strength growths you can just put him in halberdier with a +3 silver lance

Unlike Etie though, I can't think of a way to "fix" him or make him decent enough to use in a Maddening playthrough. Maybe make him a halberdier so his bad speed doesn't matter? One of the few things in the DLC I'm willing to let myself take advantage of in the early game is a couple of the basic SP books. If it's chapter 10 and I need under 100 SP to hit 1000, I'll use it. SP and upgrade costs for endgame weapons and the longbow are too unbalanced in this game.

    Jean guide plz

    • @MyBanannas
      @MyBanannas Год назад

      I have a pretty good Jean build. It works for DLC and non-DLC runs. The goal of this build is to have the highest strength on your team and enough speed to quad with a brave axe, while also being able to perform multikills with Roy or Sigurd.
      For the non-DLC method: If you're willing to use an exploit (cornering an enemy with units that can't retaliate and healing to gain levels), then leave him at level 1 until you get a second seal after clearing chapter 8. Then, reclass him into an axe fighter. Before starting chapter 9, give him Micaiah and a bunch of heal staves. Power-level him to 10 and then clear the map. If you're not willing to do that, then I guess just baby him for a bit longer. After that, promote him into Berserker for high growths. Once he caps his dex at around level 18, reclass him into a Warrior. If you're on random growths, reclass him once he caps a stat.
      For the DLC method, it's the same but without the powerleveling. Just slap Tiki on him until he promotes, and don't forget to use Divine Blessing every time.
      For the Emblem, I recommend Roy or Sigurd for the Warrior + AoE Fracture combo.
      For weapons, make sure he always has a Longbow, a Brave Axe, and a Tomahawk. The rest is up to you.
      For skills, Canter/Canter+ (or Speed +5 if you're using Sigurd) and Speedtaker.

      @@Zaemoncho I'd recommend against reclassing him into a Berserker from a Griffin Knight due to the low caps. I wish the class were better, because I love the idea of him abandoning the path of a healer and using his medicinal knowledge to brew up hallucinogenic drug cocktails to take before battle like a proper Berserker.
      You've probably missed your opportunity to make him a great axe unit, so depending on his magic I'd make him a Mage Knight or a sword/lance Wyvern Knight. If you need another bow user, you can still make him a Warrior, but he won't have the build to double/quad with A rank axes. That can still be fixed with Build +4, but it's up to you whether or not it would be worth wasting a slot on that.

    • @MyBanannas
      @MyBanannas Год назад

      @@Zaemoncho Didn't notice your second reply before writing the last one. Anyway, he's probably better off as a Mage Knight or staying as a Griffin Knight. The reason I bench him until chapter 9 and reclass him into an axe fighter at level 1 is because Martial Monk wastes his potential. It doesn't give him any dex, speed, or build growths, meaning it'll take longer for him to become a good unit. Axe fighter has great growths in all the important stats, which are then doubled by his personal skill, so he immediately becomes a hard carry once he promotes.

    regarding dlc: it does not fix bad units. bad units will always be bad because opportunity cost exists. if you spend all those resources on making alfred decent, you miss out on pushing great units over critical breakpoints that turn them into god units. slapping a band-aid on a sinking boat doesn't save it in the long run.
    what is the worst unit investment you've made so far and why?

    • @thatoneguy78228
      @thatoneguy78228 Год назад

      That is straight up fixing him though and makes him viable but not a better option over others. If you put a lot of favoritism to Alfred and give starsphere at the start with the extra SP books his growths + starsphere will let you snowball from the start, is it better than other options? Hell no but it does fix him or others given same treatment outside of vander and lets them keep up with everyone else and often times be better, you can do this entire game on maddening with the better units without DLC resources so why would good units need that extra investment unless just want to snowball through the game. DLC also gives way more Exp and SP with their paralogues early game and really strong stat stick emblem rings that let you do crazy things. I think these guides are just for people who want to run their favorite units and not meant for best units.

You can make her into a monster who can oneshot or one round everything by giving her Lyn, but that means taking Lyn away from the rest of your team and it doesn't fix her lack of bulk (though throwing a seraph's robe her way can provably help her tank 1-2 more attacks as a warrior with Lyn to fix her speed).
