Even as a Swordmaster (the drip was too good to make him anything else) he never once fell off, especially after I gave him Roy. He was as much of a crit/killing machine as Panette, and with Canter, Avoid+20, Holdout, Advance, and Run Through he had the added benefit of much more mobility and survivability (though Ike helped Panette with survivability as well), allowing him to easily setup Pincer Attack for Goldmary as well if needed.
I knew I was going to be using Kagetsu going in because I loved his design and his VA is one of my faves, so it was a very pleasant surprise when not only did I love his character but also his stats are quite frankly ridiculous. Gave him a killing edge with the Byleth Engraving and I never looked back
I reclassed him in my most recent playthrough as an axe paladin because I had already tried wyvern and swordmaster and the were both excellent and I did not have a single axe unit. He performed like always, crits everything, doubles everything, fast, never seen an axe user have 100% hit so often. He's top 3 in the game for sure
With a forged killer edge with the corrin engrave he's become one of my best duelists because he hits like 75 crit chance, he will almost always double and he hits for good damage even without crits
This is exactly my setup and why I’ll always run him. It’s so easy and fun making him into a crit machine and he essentially one-rounds anything he touches.
Wyvern is busted man. Him, merrin, Alear, crazy stuff. Good point on the change in sword master, I didn’t know that. I’d like to see him on eirika emblem for the free dmg from lunar brace + procs
Someone else said that the two best ways to use Ike is either as an unkillable tank or as a offensive crit build. Kagestu is one of maybe 2 ( panette?) who can do both and he does it best. He either one shots everything, or doubles and kills everything. He also ends up with very high defense, between Ragnel and resolve he hit 38 def and ch 16 sword masters did 0 damage. Also he doesn’t even need vantage because he takes is little damage, so you can run speedtaker on top of this. While Ike does most of the work in this pairing ( he gives ~16 def in total) it deserves mentioning that Kagestu has some of the best defense in the game, only behind Louis, Goldmary, and base Timerra in Picket.
he is great as a bow knight, just the extra movement and range means he dives better, not only that, it gives him speed, dex, and res, making him double, avoid, crit and take hits from mages. Give him speedtaker and canter and you are set.
kagetsu is the goat. He is such a great character. I made him a wyvern knight and ran a full killer build on him one playthrough and also gave him all the slayers. He is so good and usually crits and he will always double on enemy phase at the very least. I know some might not want to run him because he is ryoma 2.0 but he is such a feel good and fun unit to have on your party and his support convos are great.
This has been the case since like awakening tbh bar like very specific vantage sorcerer set ups in some games. If you want something just generically good with no effort you can't really beat wyvern stats + flight it works on like 80% of physical units.
I mean Wyvern is almost always the single best class in the game throughout the series. Not always, I'd say not in Thracia, definitely not in Awakening, it's just not in Valentia but Pegasus is the best class in that game. Debatably not in Fates? But Fates, or at least Conquest, punishes you for trying to juggernaut like other games so debatable I think.
The most crucial stat of any Fire Emblem; drip, or fashion. No amount of strength or magic growths, or exclusive abilities, may mitigate a critically low fashion stat.
@@TusksTheAxew Yeah. Look at Dorothea. Abysmal unit, one of the worst in the entire game, mediocre character, a bland spot on the cast. But she had a cool hat so was like, the most used non Lord character

I used him as a Bow Cav on my first playthrough on maddening. He has enough magic to make use of radiant bow until chapter 20+. He basically never misses even thief on terrain. He doubles/quad everything even the end game griffins. He is a crit machine. He is so effective that I held out on giving him skills until he had enough sp for lunar brace. The biggest flaw of building him like this is the atrocious def cap of Bow cav.
6:43 one case for royal knight is just avoiding staves entirely and just using lances while abusing the high bases and growths. As a royal knight, 65 hp, 40 str, 65 dex, 65 spd, 45 res, 45 def, 50 lck, 10 bld growth rates. These are huge across the board. To go with a previous comment of mine, I like to use tiki in him to complement his already high growths, but this particular class combo means he will have 80% hp, 55% str, 80% dex, 80% spd, 60% def, 60% res, 65% lck, and 25% bld growths. With those growths he can break the stat curve even on maddening Edit: NVM, paladin would just be better
Kagetsu on Paladin with Alacrity and Speed+3 is nuts. You can dive, dodgetank and kill everything with the critsword. He basically carried my first maddening palythrough while my other units were terrible (it was before I discovered your guids though ;)). You can give him Lyn but it's a bit overkill ; I used Roy on him for stats boosts and somewhat ground control with Blazing Lion. Honestly, the best unit in the game (aside from Dancer but he's a dancer so...).
All the 1-range daggers are for crit builds. Peshkatz, Stilleto, etc. I think they might be a little lower than the Killer weapons, but that might just be my bias because I always engrave the killer weapons for more crit.
I’ve had him absolutely carry as a warrior. It amplifies his strength and build, and his great spd/dex growths mean he’s still above average in those departments. He has reliable hit rates with axes and doubles most enemies with a forged steel axe, and is even a good contender for consistently quadding with brave axe, plus the added utility of longbow chain attacks and annihilating fliers. Good with any ring though I like Roy to boost his insane stats even more
I think Kagetsu is what harm's Lapis most, most people compare her to him and its true she is weaker than him, but Lapis as Wyvern knight is amazing... but in my playthrough Kagetsu had still better base stats when I recruited him and I did all the divine paralogues with her. Funny enough I also have not run him at all, but I'm considering him to fill the remaining slots in my main roster. :)
This is the truth. There is literally no reason to run her over him when he exists other than you like her aesthetic. Even the excuse of having trained her and not wanting to give up on her isn't valid when he joins because his bases are just ridiculous. AND his personality is solid too. I'd argue he is the single best physical unit in the game.
Kagetsu is one of the huge candidates for Tiki/Starsphere as well. His personal growths are already amazing, and his bases are high enough to get kills immediately, so you can send his stats into the stratosphere with Tiki, especially on random growths
I made him a Sniper immediately after recruitment. He deletes everything I point him at with perfect accuracy. And that was before he learned No Distractions and I gave him a forged Corrin engraved Killer Bow.
I ran him on griffin knight with some very nice results. I didn't really have him heal but to offset his 1 range I gave him an obstruct to help with utility for when he can't be in combat

Playing him feels like cheating, he's absurd on Wyvern on maddening. 70% crit odds, 37 strength because of a Roy emblem, doubles almost everything, high avoid and good enough defense for the front lines. Have to do another run without him to prove I can beat the game without a cheat code 😂
I've been running him as a Paladin with Sigurd and lances. He has enough build with Sigurd to easily quad with brave lance, and carry a spear with little to no speed penalty. I feel there are better units for Levin sword like Chloe or Anna.
As funny as it sounds, I found him so amazing that I marry him to Alear without hesitating, like "ok you got my love on you as a player already, I'll give you some love in the game as well in some way, like giving you Lyn ring as well ;)"
Unfortunately swordmaster is just very lackluster and without reclassing him his damage output falls off really hard by the end game. I actually found he uses Leif to absurd levels. Leif is an odd one to place, or so I’ve heard online. I took him to level 20 on Swordmaster and then swapped him to Wolf Knight and he just pops, the fuck, off. When not engaged, he runs around one shorting with Killer Sword. If I need to tank i swap to engage mode and let Advantage/Knife/Sword/Lance/Magic Sword/Wyrmslayer/Armour Slayer/Lance do its work. He gets a chunk of Build and Vantage, just…. He’s a walking armoury man haha
I wonder what his optimal build would be? Obviously wyvern is his best class. On my current maddening run, I gave him Ike and inherited speedtaker so he could double with ragnell. It’s absolutely cracked, he sweeps on enemy phase without needing bonded shield. I also gave him 2 energy drops and an ike engraved steel greataxe for nasty great aethers. Yeah the devs need to add a new difficulty lol, kagetsu and ivy are way too good
I'm the odd person out, but I've always found him just 'okay'. I put him in because I want to fill out my 14. He's never the worst in the group, but I find him in the bottom half. Maybe it is just my playstyle.
So if we compare him to the other "sword user" of Lapis, their growths are +/- 5 in nearly every category. She loses to him in dex and luck. So, aside from the passive, why is he seen as OP and she isn't when she won't be much behind.?
imho daggers are the best weapon in the game generally. sense on the first few forges they get 2 mt, their damage becomes ridiculous quick and the 1-2 range... the units don't need high ste growth to deal stupid damage. as a cherry on top, due to their low weight and the high spd growth on the classes that use it, you will double
"Jesus Christ, what are this guy's stats? Did they accidentally mix Kagetsu's join time with that of a Gotoh? I feel like I'm looking at Harken over here, God damn!" - Joe Biden
He does have 1 weakness, but it is the same weakness that everyone has who joins post ch10. Lack of flexibility because lack of available proficiencies. Without dlc, lances come with erika after ch16, and staves come with leif after ch17, tomes come with micaiah after ch19. It doesn't matter tho cuz he is busted.
30 is a little low for strength growth. But when he joins, with an internal level of 16, and 11 strength just... attached to the character. Swordmaster has 6 base strength, so the other 11 is all Kagetsu. Alear comes at Level 1, with 0 strength attached to the character. In other words, Alear's strength is just the same as whatever class she's in (dragon child in this case.) If you were to unlevel Kagetsu 15 levels with that 30% growth, he'd have 4.5 strength at level 1. Louis has 3, Etie 2.8, Chloe 1.75, Boucheron 0.4, Alear 0. Another way of looking at it would be to think of Kagetsu as having already gained 15 levels from his start, at 73% growth (11/15) and then his growth rate drops to 30%. If he gains 30 more levels by game end with 30% growth, his average life total growth rate would be 45%. Which is basically why his somewhat poor strength growth doesn't really matter. Anyway, he just has everything you could possibly want from a physical unit, aside from a good starting class. Which is easily fixed. And I guess his ability is kind of mediocre. It's an above average ability, but on a unit that tends to have high enough accuracy that it doesn't actually help. Still, most personal skills in the game aren't great, and this is still above average.
My only issue with Kagetsu is that he starts as a Swordmaster. I'm not a fan of the class overall. It's locked into one weapon type with no range. If he started as a level 17 Sword Fighter, I think Hero would be a better Master Seal option.
Kagetsu is another character that I regret not being able to use more, but I’m gonna make up for that when I play this game on hard mode. It’s such a shame that you get him literally after the best sword user out of all of the Emblems is taken away from you and you don’t get him back until late game. But otherwise, Lucina and Lyn are more than enough to pick up the pieces until you get him back. Side Note: I got the DLC.
I honestly thought he was a girl from the icon in the Nintendo online icons 😂 glad he's busted since hes voiced by best VA takehito koyasu aka KONO DIO DAAA

Yeah the devs need to add a new difficulty lol, kagetsu and ivy are way too good
Counterpoint swordmaster keeps his drip.
I'm the odd person out, but I've always found him just 'okay'. I put him in because I want to fill out my 14. He's never the worst in the group, but I find him in the bottom half. Maybe it is just my playstyle.
There hasn’t been a better Swordmaster join you since FE6 Karel and I will die on that hill
Thanks! Gave me some ideas.
So if we compare him to the other "sword user" of Lapis, their growths are +/- 5 in nearly every category. She loses to him in dex and luck. So, aside from the passive, why is he seen as OP and she isn't when she won't be much behind.?
Because his bases are insane bro
@A Prinny On Break oh, I forgot about bases. Yea, that makes a difference.
I made lapis a bruiser off tank with speedtaker - great-knight
imho daggers are the best weapon in the game generally. sense on the first few forges they get 2 mt, their damage becomes ridiculous quick and the 1-2 range... the units don't need high ste growth to deal stupid damage. as a cherry on top, due to their low weight and the high spd growth on the classes that use it, you will double
True but this guy wants axes as far as I'm concerned, max his damage output and he doesn't get weighed down by them plus he has great accuracy
yes lmao. hell now I wanna try axe kagetsu
I used diamant for hard classic because of main character vibes but dropping his ass for maddening with Kogetsu taking his place
Axes and bows get him everything he could ask for
I guess I got unlucky because my hard mode Kagetsu barely does anything with Levin Sword 😭 he was a Griffin Knight
30 is a little low for strength growth.
But when he joins, with an internal level of 16, and 11 strength just... attached to the character. Swordmaster has 6 base strength, so the other 11 is all Kagetsu.
Alear comes at Level 1, with 0 strength attached to the character. In other words, Alear's strength is just the same as whatever class she's in (dragon child in this case.)
If you were to unlevel Kagetsu 15 levels with that 30% growth, he'd have 4.5 strength at level 1.
Long live the pure upside meme!
Technically requiring a second seal means he had a downside beyond join time. However 2500 for the best combat unit in the game is a fair price lmao.
pure upside
Kagetsu is another character that I regret not being able to use more, but I’m gonna make up for that when I play this game on hard mode.
It’s such a shame that you get him literally after the best sword user out of all of the Emblems is taken away from you and you don’t get him back until late game. But otherwise, Lucina and Lyn are more than enough to pick up the pieces until you get him back.
Side Note: I got the DLC.
No canter makes him potentially worse than Chloe, Lapis, Anna, and Alear for mid game.
But probably not.
I honestly thought he was a girl from the icon in the Nintendo online icons 😂 glad he's busted since hes voiced by best VA takehito koyasu aka KONO DIO DAAA
Just reclassed my Kagetsu to warrior from swordmaster wich drop his speed frpm 50 to 35(green) any way fore to makenhim have higher speed as a earrior without using stat booster?
SPD+5 passive should be enough
Fire Emblem: Wyvern Knight
Pure upside
to sum it up
he kinda good tho
Avoid is (Spd*2) + (Lck/2) :3
Wyvern and Griffon Knight are so busted in this game 😂
lol, just say you wanna make everyone a flying type.
will you be putting these unit guides in their own playlist? the regular engage playlist is quite massive
Yes I can create a unit guide FE Engage playlist
玩Hero可以用暴击斧、飞斧,比Swordmaster强多了
Another good physical units wants Wyvern? Tickle me surprised XD I would put every physical unit on Wyvern if it didn’t take so many second seals/ bond fragments to get the weapon proficiencies XD
I think avoid is 2*speed + 0.5*luck
I gave him a Marisa ring and just play russian roulette. Either poke the enemy, or lethality strikes hahaha
The one character that didn't need a guide.
Everyone gets one, even you! Your guide is going up tomorrow
Instructions unclear
Kagetsu is horrible, he barely does any damage with these fire tomes
Hey by the time you finish the game mentorship will have given your unit about 1 single level up worth of exp. Not very worth
How are you so good
So good at what?
In general I guess
Not sure what the question is lol. If it is about how am I good at games it is just time investment/learning mechanics so anyone could be at my level or better and a lot already are :)
@@IcedCoffeeGaming ah interesting
For all that is good about Kagetsu, he will never be the number one character.
And that’s only because Seadall exists.
You had me at the first have I am not going to lie
