    In this video I outline how to use Etie on Maddening in terms of classes, upgrades, passives, etc.
    This guide is aimed at the early/midgame. I will be making an advanced guide that covers emblem rings and endgame unit builds.

    In Magic: The Gathering they purposefully print bad cards every set, because there is always some new player discovering that they can trade out those cards for better cards, and it makes them feel like a genius. Weirdly, in Fire Emblem trading out your starting units for stronger units often feels bad.

    I wouldn't recommend using Etie long term. But there's something to be said for keeping her a few maps beyond Alcryst's recruitment.
    The bridge to Brodia, and the snowstorm level where you recruit Jade have fliers to the north and south, which makes deploying 2 archers a reasonable choice.
    Additionally, for the Brodia castle defense map, you can give Etie or Alcryst Sigurd, have them fire off a ballista shot, then have the other hop on and fire it again on the same turn. You only get in 50% extra ballista shots, since your non-sigurd archer will need to move off the ballista for the Sigurd unit to hop back on. But definitely a cool little trick that I found worthwhile.
    After Jade's map though, I think it's time for Etie to retire.

    She's definitely a 'hard mode' character, where resources are more plentiful and you're more likely to develop characters further down the priority list. If you can rush her to 10 and get Canter on her and Spear Prof from Siggy, she can make a decent early Halberdier but it requires some luck on Silver from Dogs to rush a Steel Lance to Brave so its a pretty heavy investment. But Halberdier doesn't care about her horrid Speed and Build. Obviously there are better units later on to do it for less investment, but you can make Etie a pretty strong carry if you have a love for her.

    Engage does a lot of things way better than Three Houses, but I do really miss 3H’s way of developing units.
    ANY student in that game could be more than viable because you had your hands on them right from the start and lots of resources to allocate towards polishing their good stats and/or fixing up the weaker points.
    In this one, you can love a character with all your heart but sometimes they just fall off. I’ve heard that’s par for the course with FE games, but I’m pretty new to the series myself.

    • @boredomkiller99
      @boredomkiller99 Год назад +6

      Engage character viability is leagues better then most fire emblems. Etie for example is way better then a lot of actually bad characters and would probably be like a mid tier character in any other game. I mean she is fairly easily fixed by reclassing to warrior and Boom you have a High strength warrior who can use B bows.
      Meanwhile binding blade had Sophia a character who has bases that are low as 3 midway into the game who who only exists to be escorted on her join map for a guiding ring and Gaiden chapter.
      This is not getting into stuff like how the first fire emblem would purposely make later recruits flat out worse then earlier because you were kind of expected to treat units as expendable. Like Caesar was legit just budget Oguma for example.

    One thing you forgot to mention vs Alcryst: his passive isn't actual trash. A positioning based +3 Str is really useful, and since he doubles often then it is 6 extra damage. More if he turns into AlCrit. I know passives shouldn't carry the most weight, but there is a huge difference between a passive that does something and a passive that provides no value.

    Comparing her stats while fed to other unit’s bases really shows how tragic it is for Etie. I’m on chapter 9 of my first Maddening run and I can’t imagine trying to feed her early when that’s exp that can go towards Alear, Chloe, Anna etc. who can become monsters with your early master seals instead of just becoming kinda decent. Especially when she’s not particularly impressive unless a flier is nearby.
    You also don’t need to feed Alcryst at all during that part of the game where seals become available since he’s already level 10. Low investment, high reward.

  • @Tornicute

    Feels bad that many of the starter units start off with such poor stats/personal skills. Tiki seems the only way to make them compete with later units in the mid game but even then they fall off in late game. WyvernKnight seemed like an okay pick for her stat growth, but it really doesn't fix her dex issue...

    • @plentyofpaper
      @plentyofpaper Год назад +3

      It is. But on the flip side, it feels good to be continuously getting units that are worth using throughout the entire game.
      I think there are less than a half dozen units not worth considering beyond the chapter you recruit them in. Panette, Lapis, Saphir, Lindon and Citrinne. I also remain skeptical about Timerra and Hortensia, but people really seem to like them, so I'll hold off on judgement for now and maybe give them another chance.
      On any given playthrough, Engage is the Fire Emblem where I make use of the largest number of units by far. Aside from Radiant Dawn, which has you controlling several different armies.

    • @Tornicute
      @Tornicute Год назад +1

      Well def think you need to look more into panette/citrinne as I'd def not put them in the not worth using category but you do have few ways to use them effectively. As for Timerra and Hortensia, utilize their broken personal skills they're both S tier and require very little to no investment. I just wish the difference wasn't as huge between say Etie and alcryst, I don't mind that the later units are statistically/skillwise but in the end you shouldn't be too punished for using the characters you prefer imo.

      @qtpie1144 Год назад +1

      @@plentyofpaper Pannette and Citrinne are really great. I think everyone agrees how potent Panette with Roy or Ike is. I think that's more of a personal run discrepancy than a good unit evaluation. Same with Timerra and Hortensia.

    • @plentyofpaper
      @plentyofpaper Год назад +3

      @@qtpie1144 Respectfully, I'd like to make a case for my statements, which seem to go against a lot of what's out there. Popular opinion is a better rule of thumb than a contrarian in the comments section, so it's completely understandable that you think I'm off base.
      Panette and Citrinne have largely the same problem. They're slow and frail. Panette has a lot of HP, which makes her good at surviving any single round of combat, or potentially 2, but it takes a lot of investment to make her not get doubled. I think I had speed +4 on her in my maddening run, and that was enough to make her not get doubled by mid-speed enemies up through chapter 16 or 17.
      Ike was what I used on Panette. This helped cover her frailty... somewhat. But really, she became a little tankier than emblemless Kagetsu.
      She's got a very nice ability, which is mostly just +10 crit, which pairs nicely with Wrath, killer axe, whatever. And later on, you could even toss on vantage, but you're really relying on getting the attack to hit, crit, 1 shot, and not get sniped to death by ranged attacks. And that involves keeping her on the roster long enough to get Leif back. I've got no idea why you think Roy is a good pairing with Panette. Hold out? At best, it just lets her survive 1 extra round of combat. Annoying on enemies. Not a substitute for decent speed or defense.
      Citrinne does not have the HP, so she can just get 1 rounded by random enemies, meaning she needs a lot of support. She can get away with this better than Panette since she's not a front liner, but her payoff isn't very good. The only things she can one round are armored units, which pretty much any magic attacker can deal with. She really doesn't have what it takes to compete with Anna, Levin Sword Chloe, or even Celine. I guess you could use her as a healer of sorts with her item sharing? But that involves her actually taking damage, which she's really, really bad at.
      Timerra comes in with decent speed and good defense, which means she's not constantly in danger. She's got horrendous build though. As a picket, the only weapon she can wield without slowdown is a slim lance. So while her speed is fine, it very quickly becomes... not fine when you try to get her to pack a punch. Toss a brave lance on her to try to get a sandstorm build running, that brings her down to 12 speed, after promotion. That's a point faster than Amber when he joins. You can spend 1000SP on Speed+4, and she may double some things with a lighter weapon. You can get 3 more speed by pairing her with Lyn at Bond level 10, or 5 at level 20. Same with Leif, but he's substantially later. At that point, her speed will be fine, even with fairly heavy weapons. But you've now used a skill slot, 1000 SP, and used Lyn, who could have been used to help somebody that doesn't need so much investment. Or you used Leif, but again, that requires using Timerra for quite a while. Not to mention, she's still a low movement lance locked unit.
      Hortensia is a bit more of an interesting case. She falls into the category of "anybody that can use a staff is good, and she's a smidge better at that than most." +1 range on staffs super useful, allows your healer to stay safe and still heal. Any healer with canter can pull that off. Hortensia has good mobility, also helpful! Griffir Knights, Royal Knights, and Ivy share that trait. S rank staffs? You get 1 use on the S rank staff, which should be used in the final chapter, if at all. A rank? Fortify is nice, entrap has accuracy issues without grabbing staff mastery from Micaiah, and even then, it's pretty situational.
      Her magic stat is abysmal. 12 base, 20% growth. You can get away wit a surprisingly low magic if you've got a weapon to back it up. B rank Tomes caps her at Elfire, base 10 power, and expensive to refine. She's got good Res, but there aren't a lot of opportunities to wall large numbers of mages.
      Is she still useful? Absolutely. But so is anybody with a staff. Late game, after a bunch of recruitment slots opened up, it became clear I didn't have strong enough bench warmers to compete with the enemy power level. The solution? Bring on the crappy staff users! I've got to admit, Hortensia did manage to slightly outperform level 4 martial monk Framme. Basically because she had 2 more movement. Framme could still pull her weight effectively though. Chain guard still had use, Recover lets her healing keep pace with what was needed, and she could use warp, rescue and obstruct as well as anybody, with a rewarp to help her keep up with the pack. Every time she used an obstruct meant my main staff users could be doing something else instead. Hortensia was able to accomplish basically the same thing. Lesson of the story? An F tier staff user is better than a C tier combat unit.

    I don’t think Iced Coffee is entirely wrong on his assessment. Characters like Etie can get good, but that can be said of most characters who get babysat. Coffee’s approaching this with pragmatism based on raw stat rating which is fine to do. It was an undeniable feeling when I got Alcryst and had a stat comparison. Nearly a 20+ rating difference with Etie receiving an Energy Drop to boot. I had to go on raw stats for later chapters during my first(current) maddening run just because raw stats from characters like Kagetsu were hard to ignore when my Alfred became wanting.
    But yeah, I think Etie is a solid C unit or low B unit sheerly out of a rating standpoint and first bow syndrome. Her static stats as a level 7 sniper arent impressive and I mostly use her sizable str stat to land one meaty Steel Bow+3. I am using Lyndis on her to abuse Speedtaker which helps her achieve two round attacks as the stage progresses. But that could arguably used on a better unit to achieve instant killer weapon procs.

    The ideal skills for her would be Canter and Hit+, I prefer Sniper since its the class that let's her use Brave Bow and then I equip the Claude Bond Ring, make her into into a bow version of Citrinne. The problem though is that enemies generally have worse Res than Def and Citrinne will also have a higher Mag as a Sage than Etie will Str as a Sniper.

  • @Anteo4ever

    She was my ace on maddening classic no dlc, the trick is to... well.. to have the leeway to give her the crit+ engrave in a killer bow +5, if thats not occupied by anyone else and she get claude's ring for +1 range then the sniper class does good by adding +10 crit which will activate even vs ranged enemies due to the +1 range. With a high 80s low 90s crit chance you can work with the time stone here and there to guarantee the crits (since you never use all 10 time stone uses anyways). Truly the best i could do with her, and i kind of over relied on her from ch17 onwards to 1hit ko those pesky swordmasters and wolf knights, dance to refresh and then kill another one safetly. Backup duties were being done by other units. She ended up being the mvp on all maps in the mid-late game and took most of the exp on how easy was for her to just kills units to help everyone else survive,.
    The setup is definitelly not little investment and many units could perform as well if not better, but she did her role well and allowed for more plays by just killing non tanky threats easly. Tankier low res units were dealt with by Anna and Ceiline, and every other type of units could be face tanked by Louis, Timerra, Goldmary, etc, to setup for kills by the backline on next turn
    Oh and I did all of this while bringing Louis, Chloe, Anna, Ceiline, Jean and Etie herself from the early game, there is enough space/exp for all that. It just shows how even a mid/low tier can perform well on maddening. If anything, its the sniper class with its high dex and +10 crit that enables all of this, helped by a decent str growth that allows Etie to guarantee a 1hit ko to most units, and to become the best boss killer in my whole party.

    Never had any issue with Etie. For the record I am currently doing a "bad units" run, where I run "non optimal" characters on Maddening. Etie's frailty should never be an issue if you play the game correctly. She is your earliest Longbow user, and has higher strength over Alcryst before even hitting 10. Over all I prefer her to Alcryst, as her damage output is just better, and shhe can get higher crit than Alcryst can ever proc Luna. Etie also has 10 percent more base STR growth and LCK growth, making her much better at bursting down high def enemies. In my run, at lvl7/8 she had 1 or 2 more str than alcryst, which translates to 3-6 more damage in peg knight. She also gets the highest crit early game, and still has very good crit late game.
    tl:dr she is good if you play her at 3 range with great bust down atk an good crit. If you are playing her at 2 range, of course you will have a bad time. Thats not her role. My "bad units run" has probably been the most fun I have had, because many of the "bad units open up a lot of different options you normally could not do with the move and forget "optimals".
    Basically, yes, if you play her like "optimals" she is bad. If you play Etie like Etie, she has been better than my optimals.
    Granted this game isnt hard, maybe being slightly harder than awakening, but not by much. Oviously refering to hardest difficulty.

    If you want to run her, War + canter +longbow. You initiate chip with her and position her to backup attack 2-3 enemies you plan on killing. Outside the second seal you dont need to invest in her. Backups are very useful for getting one rounds on units that need just a bit more damage and her high Str keeps her actually dealing damage on bows which others often need procs or cant even contribute. Especially useful for high def bosses /units you need to throw multiple attacks at. Gives you an archer and backup very early on.
    SP is ~200 starting? So 8 levels with a ring. Not unreasonable.
    She's not a great unit but probably one of the better backup choices pre-regaining sig.

      Honestly this is not good advice for the early game, her getting on backup is objectively worse than Anna getting on warrior and that isn't even her best role. Energized is trash. The game counts a turn as one player phase, one enemy phase, so you can think of a turn as being two phase lengths.
    so if you proc the ability during player phase by consuming a vulnerary, the passive runs out by the time the next play phase comes along - i.e., you can only have this active during enemy phase, which is terrible on her since she generally does not want to enemy phase at all. Of course you could dance etie and retain the passive but there are usually other characters that benefit more from the dance than her.
    Alcryst's passive on the other hand is amazing since you proc it (reliably, mind you) during enemy phase and retain it during the following player phase.

Most people won't stick Sigurd on her early though - which she absolutely needs to start "snowballing" if you can call it that in her way just to get the canter early. And given her defense it is absolutely a skill you need on her asap. So a lot of attention will be need to put in so make sure she gets the 1000 SP before chap 10. With DLC mind you any warrior I ran so far - be it Etie or Clanne outshined Alcryst throughout the early and midgame. Just because they really snowball by shooting down all those fliers on the Tiki map and Alcryst Dex is not high enough to proc Luna consistently till very late while these longbow warriors are very consistent and kill because of high STR and sheer brute force. In terms of stats/ growths and profile Etie's competition i the game is Amber and Panette, not Alcryst.

    Alright here comes devils advocate. I think it is a little disingenuous to harp too hard on Etie's bulk and not on Alcrysts. Etie will have more def/res than Alcryst when you get him, and he won't pass her for quite a while. His speed isn't actually fast enough to double most units in the game, only being a few points ahead of Etie without doing something extra to change it and his strength is notably lower. Luna is a very good passive, but crit +10 on a high dex unit shouldn't be taken lightly when forged killer weapons exist allowing Etie to easily each 80%+ crit mid game. Neither can take a round form an enemy on enemy phase so I don't understand why her bulk is constantly harped on. Alcryst having a bit more hp is rarely of consequence when faced with enemy units mid-late game, though I will give him he gets fast enough to not get doubled on his own with his higher build. Both units need some ring/skill work to genuinely be good units, they both need some kind of speed enhancement from a ring or skill to consistently double, they both will never be able to take hits. They function in a very similar role where Etie is stronger and Alcryst is faster, and while speed is better than strength, in a game where it is so easy to fix any stat via speedtaker, rings, etc I feel it's a tad disingenuous to harp too much on her mediocre speed. Also comparing her to panette and merrin on recruitment is also disingenuous seeing as they also surpass Alcryst on recruitment, they surpass most units on recruitment statistically. This is all to say I think Alcryst is a little better and easier to use, but not by nearly the amount being said here. I think a sniper with high crit and high str is similarly valuable to an archer with low str, high speed that doubles potentially with luna. They both are paper, so that can't be a contention point.

      @@IcedCoffeeGaming why were you using her as a sniper, she is kind of dog**** as one. I mean she isn't amazing in general but sniper literal magnifies her weaknesses. Hell Sniper magnifies ever weakness, class has some of the lowest stat bases in general and I can't imagine Alycryst would of done much better since his personal durability growths are only barely slightly better then Etie's
      Sniper bases suck, sniper growths suck. It makes her meh speed even worse, her bad bulk worse and doesn't really help her above average strength stand out.
      In fact looking at the Stats if we look at both Alcryst and Etie as snipers at level 10/10 while Alycryst is definitely better at living neither have any business taken hits because Sniper is made out if paper.
      At 10/10 sniper Alycryst durability advantage is 3HP, 2SPD and 1 def which isn't a lot. However he has a 2 build advantage which prevents him from being weighed down by steel bows While Etie is.
      I looked at chapter 15 maddening mode enemies, all the warriors seem to wield Tomahawks. The strongest deals 41 damage with 15 AS so I will be using this one.
      Etie gets 1 hit killed by this one at levels up to 10/9. At 10/10 she surivives with 1hp.
      However Etie can lose a lot of speed from snipers and her own non existent build stat. That being said the only way she is getting doubled at 10/10 Sniper is if she got attack while being weighted down with a long bow which would drop her speed from 14 to 10 causing her to die. However getting hit in enemy phase while using a three range would be simple user error.
      Alcryst gets one shotted in this same situation up to 10/6 where his slightly higher HP and defense allows him to live with one hp.
      Likewise his 2 extra build means he gets fast enough to avoid being doubled even with a long bow by 10/6 but barely. As we can see with both being snipers Alycryst barely has a survivability advantage.
      Thing is a lot of people think Alycryst is noticable more durable and faster then Etie but that is because they are confusing his personal bases for his class. His personal class is a much a better archer/sniper and gives him a couple more points of speed, dex and a extra build at the cost of 1 HP and 1 strength. Alycryst has zero reason to ever be in sniper.
      Likewise Etie never wants to be in sniper but sniper suck. As a warrior the chances of getting 1 Rounded as she gets more hp, extra speed, build and defense. Haven't tried Bow Knight but i imagine it too would have survived a round when Sniper did not.
      So in conclusion, Yeah both Alycryst and Etie have extremely similar durability based on their personal bases and growths so Alycryst real main advantage is higher personal build and having access to a good unique class. The only reason Etie got one rounded here is because you put her in what is probably the worst class in the game

    I go my Etie on a Wyvern and she's doing fine for now. 14 speed and 19 strenght on 10/3 wyvern knight (playing on fixed growths), if I get a good speed boost from the meal she can actually double some unpromoted enemies that get slowed down by weapons. I'm gonna give her either speedtaker or speed +5 from Lyn and see how she performs. (I'm on chapter 12)

    I think the reason why Etie is falling behind is you didn't put her into warrior. See she doesn't care about the +10 crit from sniper because that's useless. Sniper is probably the worst class for long term growth when you could make her a warrior and fix all that. You want to make her a warrior as soon as possible because it gives her a higher base strength. At level 10 13 strength promote sniper then switch to warrior you get 19 strength which is the same as your etie right now.she'll get higher HP and slighty higher speed too making it easier to use since enemy speed doesn't grow all that much. Most enemies only have like 10-14 speed on average around chapters 11-15. Fliers and swordmasters are generally faster but most of the time she should be able to tank a hit. Obviously they grow alot during endgame. If you did that I think she'd end up alot better for you then in sniper because Sniper is just bad. You can still do killer bow strats with warrior with 50% crits with a +2 lyn engrave killer bow but she also just ends up way way better with higher damage. And this was on my third maddening mode no dlc run with fixed growths. And no she didn't have the lyn emblem. This was done without putting the most broken emblem on her. She still contributes alot of damage without it. Maybe not one rounds but big chunks of enemy HP which can lead into easy kills for her or someone else. Simply put your etie just wasn't optimized as well as she could have.
    It doesn't really take that much effort to make her good. Yes Alcryst is faster and has more defense but once she gets the ball rolling in warrior she'll quickly outdamage him and keep up with units like Panette. I cannot take this Etie slander any longer!

      I literally fed her 50% of all the enemies on CH13 as kills and ran her the entire time. Here is an image of her being 1 roundable by a HAND AXE on CH15:
      She would be +1 more speed on Warrior and still be 1 roundable. She also randomly died to a low damage mage a few turns before this because I forget how insanely squishy she is and am used to my units being able to tank low damage enemies.

      @@IcedCoffeeGaming really? I mean like yeah she can't handle more then two enemies but most units can't. She has long bow access so she is very flexible. And being flexible is really good because she can get in kills every now and then without putting her in danger. Alongside the extra speed Warrior does give extra build too. Once again sniper is just a bad class on Eite. Yes you did give her kills on chapter 13 but I'm sure she would have done better as a warrior. If she got 4 levels as a level 10/1 warrior with a base speed of 10 she would have at least gotten 2 points in speed to not get doubled by 15 spd enemies (thanks to warrior giving 15% speed to her 35% making it 50%) now if you used a very heavy weapon it could lower her speed but assuming her build is like....8 she doesn't get weighted down by a steel or long bow. Your Eite was just in the wrong class because Sniper has lower build, str, hp, and speed. Yeah she isn't statistically better then the units like 2 units in terms of strength but she isn't actually too far behind in durability either. 10-11 defense is below average with maybe 38-40 hp but it can tank at least one hit. The best way to make use of her is to instantly class change into warrior. You don't wanna spend anytime in any other class because it will tank her performance as warrior gives her the best growths. Thank goodness Maddening mode has fixed growths. It makes comparing much easier

      It's more that it doubles down on her main strength which is ehhhh strength. She is one of three characters who can use Sliver bows as a Warrior and due to her strength will do the most damage to fliers with it since Alcryst and Fogado even with their higher speeds are not doubling them.
      She however will have the worst hit rates with it due usually enough to be manageable with investment and also Alcryst and Fogado can often use Radiant bow in general to take out fliers they can't otherwise as long as you fix it's bad hit rate which is less of an issue for them since they have higher dex.

    No offense to your content (I like it), but do you factor in that you can have more than one archer when analyzing?
    For Etie, shes not my first pick, but I also don't make all my archers crit bow users because they just can't all do that. Instead she's a great Brave user (not quad-meme) who wouldn't have the speed to double otherwise, and reaches about 10 more Str over say Alcryst as a Sniper vs his Lord class.
    What about support bonuses and utility/versatility?
    Since she doesn't have to try to be Alcryst, she can be Warrior or Bow Knight. Warrior specifically gives her about 20 Str over Alcryst, can use axes for what its worth to a player, provides assist attacks (great with longbow), and her admittedly bad Dex can be fixed given engraves and who she supports with, which she provides Hit and Crit Dodge to whoever shes hiding behind or sniping alongside.
    I also don't think you talked about Brave + Canter (and Heavy Attack if you DLC) guerilla style with say Zerker or Wyvern, etc.
    Anyway, mostly curious if you're analyzing all angles rather than just stat-sticks. Engages' fun is how versatile the customization is and team synergy is.

Anna is not even good as a physical unit.,

    • @garsenchannel556
      @garsenchannel556 Год назад

      @@IcedCoffeeGaming Well I guess that answers my question. I think you missed my point how she or any unit isn't bad because they're not some best in class. You can't make clones and you get 12-14 unit slots. Theres no rule against class or role overlap. Maybe that clarifies what I meant.
      Also, I don't see why Quads is the only thing good about Brave weapons. Not every unit is meant to go for inconsistent proc gimmicks, even if they're fun and pretty good. The basic point of a Brave weapon is if a unit is too slow to double things, now they can, with a cost. With Heavy Attack this is now even stronger for certain Unit/Bld choices. Quads is the opposite approach with so fast they hit 4 times, but probably not very hard, so you need some kind of gimmick or skill synergy. Its even more niche than just using a Brave normally and effectively.
      Anyway. Appreciate the reply and the discussion, even if we may disagree.
