Cool story: The reason Jeff re-recorded Do Ya in 1976 was to “reclaim it” from the great Todd Rundgren. Since the early 1970s, Todd played the song live during his concerts and it became a signature song. Many fans thought Todd wrote it. So, Jeff put his ELO spin on it, released it, and the rest is history. It once again became “Jeff’s song.” Jeff wrote both the music and lyrics. The Move version sounds similar but rawer, almost garage band-like, and without strings, of course.
Shaun, you mention never having coming across an ELO cover. A great one (and so appropriate for Electric Light ORCHESTRA) is "Roll Over Beethoven". I recommend that one for your next ELO listen.
Agree, but there are several options of live versions, some of which are not at the same level as the studio/album version, so I recommend using the studio version with the original ELO lineup.
@@TheJm129 There is one live, or maybe it isn't, not sure but it has video of them on the stage that is just fantastic. The two cello players are playing them held up above their heads at one point.
Besides ChuckBerry's _Roll Over Beethoven_ , which is the most known cover done by ELO, they had several others. One is an instrumental, a cover of the classical piece _In The Hall Of The Mountain King_ by Grieg, which is on the album On The Third Day (1973, ELO's third album.) i understand the Who also had a cover version of this. The other two seem to have been kind of staples at early concerts. One is an _amazing_ sizzling hot rocking cover of Jerry Lee Lewis' _Great Balls Of Fire_ that can be found on the 1974 concert album The Night The Light Went On In Long Beach. Definitely a version worthy of a reaction. On the same album there is _Daytripper_ , their cover version of the Beatles' _Day Tripper_ . In my opinion this cover version by far exceeds the original, with a much fuller sound and an amazing string intro. Yes Jeff did a Beatles song _better_ than the Beatles! (Not that Jeff would ever claim that, he is far too modest for that.) This obviously also is a song worthy of a reaction, and I'd love to see one, especially if it was done as a comparison. Just be sure to find the best remastered version, as there originally was a vinyl release of the album based on a bad tape recording. Later a good tape was found, and this has since been used for a remastered version iirc.
I love ELO almost as much as I love the Beatles but no ELO did not do a better version of Day Tripper. I like it just as much, but there is no Beatles cover that exceeds their original never mind by far. It would be nice if he heard the original first anyway So he could decide what he thinks is better.
@@k_salterI saw that same tour too. It was the only time I had front row seats at Madison Square Garden. Thin Lizzy was the opening act. 40 years later I saw ELO at the Garden again. Almost the same seats and with the same friend.
Love this cover! Ace Frehley (former KISS guitarist) also did a cover of this song because he loved ELO's version. I can see why Ace would like it---the guitars are stellar!
Back in the day, guessing late 70s, all I had to hear was the first 30 seconds of this song and I was sold on the entire album. It was a tremendous cap on their body of work up until that point. I bought the next couple albums but did not care for them as much as the early ones and up and through this one. Saw them live twice in the 70s, which was just incredible! Thank you for covering this and so many other great ones on your channel.
Great song. Try Shangri-la. It immediately follows this on the same album. Along with Brain Damage/Eclipse by Floyd, it is one of the greatest album closers ever (IMHO).
You should have clicked on The Move wiki page. To see that Jeff was in The Move before ELO. One time I happened upon Bun E. Carlos (Cheap Trick drummer) as a guest DJ in Chicago. He spun this song and I asked him who it was, and he introduced me: it was the Move💥🎸🎤
E L O - " The Diary Of Horace Wimp " this is another 70s Groovy Rockin' Classic plus Also this other Groovy called -- " SHOWDOWN " (It's Gonna Be A Showdown) 1973 Rock Classics 🎸🎹 🎻 🎶 🔥
Lynne joined the Move for the sole purpose of forming ELO with Wood. You need to check out the original Move version of Do Ya, plus Lynne's other classics before the Move transitioned to ELO: Down on the Bay, What?, Message from the Country (song - although the whole album is fantastic), Open Up Said the World at the Door (Yes, that's the real title).
I'm going out on a limb here, suggesting a Long John Baldry song: "Conditional Discharge/Don't Try to Lay No Boogie Woogie on the King of Rock & Roll" I don't think Shawn or anyone will be disappointed!
SWEET - Love Is Like Oxygen (12" Long Version) 6 Min & 47 Sec VIDEO VERSION Original from 1978 Great sound also as long as it's almost 7 minutes it's got to be the Original Unedited. Note this song will Slow down 👇 Twice but it's not over yet until it Fades out all the way completely then it's finished. Great ,70s songs you should also check out.
The Move version of this song immediately caught my attention when it came out and I bought the album. Later when it was recorded as an ELO song, I was very pleasantly surprised and happy they did so.
ELO is one of my favorite bands my boys enjoy the music. They got so many great songs. I would like to recommend one to you and that is probably my favorite one is called tightrope
You want another rocker? Do Roll over Beethoven. It's a cover but a real rocker, and do this one with video with it of them live. They go a little nuts, all of them, including cello players playing them like they were guitars held up in the air. One cello player lost his on the stage at one point. Jeff lying on the stage at one point. You will love it! ruclips.net/video/iehhNUr754I/видео.html
I would love to hear Gene Simmons from KISS actually cover this song… I think the vocal style is similar to what Gene is capable of…. I’m actually serious. 😂🤷♂️
I have to disagree. In the late 70's I was listening to ELO, Pink Floyd and The Alan Parsons Project along with Foreigner, Styx, Kansas, Thim Lizzy, Skynard, The Outlaws, April Wine, Def Leppard, The Cars, The Police, Cheap Trick, REO Speedwagon, Robin Trower, Jethro Tull, Elton John, Van Halen, and a long list of others.
@@kallsop2 They did go disco. You can't hide that. Because every Friday night we went to the roller rink. And they were in the rotation. I'm showing my feminine side.lol
@@johnzubil2875 Yes they did. Mr. Blue Sky from the Out Of The Blue album had a disco tempo to it and their Discovery album did so as well in 1979. KISS went disco as well with I Was Made For Loving You. Never tried to hide that. By the time I graduated high-school in 1981 I had about 250 albums that covered country, pop, rock, progressive rock, punk, new wave, disco, jazz and classical from the mid 60's to that time.
This is going on my get up and moving list. Love all the musical twists and turns it takes. Great pick. Blessings.
Jeff Lynne is a musical GENIUS!!

ELO was considered by some to be The Second Beatles.
