ODDITY is a surreal urban fantasy role playing game set in the Seventies. Play as Travis Fields, an ordinary boy who leaves home in a bid to save the world Travis takes to the field armed with a baseball bat and pellet gun... Along with powers he's only now discovering. It might have something to do with that "Gate" thing that blew up on an impromptu camping trip...
...Whatever the case, the world's in danger! People are crabby, demons run amok, the moon's covered in creepy ooze, a bear did something... And to top it all off, there's even a secret society called the "Modern Men" popping up lately. They might be behind all the recent kidnappings... But don't worry! You'll make plenty of friends as you fight your way through this weird and groovy world!
If you're looking for a roadtrip full of oddball characters and serious challenge with lots of heart... then ODDITY is for you!

Edit: Seems like people are still responding to this, so I'll take the opportunity to address the state of the game and give as much information on Oddity's development as I can find. Here goes!
Alright, first of all, let's look at the official information available, and the information people are most likely to find first. The last (and only) post on this channel was this video, in January 2020 (2 years ago as of writing this edit). However, the official Twitter page was last updated later, on December 26 of 2020, with some artwork. Since then, there have been no more updates from the project's official accounts. However, if we look at the Oddity subreddit, there's a lot more going on.
While there have not been updates on the project's official accounts, individual devs and project collaborators have given tidbits of information according to the subreddit. In March 2022, one user contacted the official concept artist and illustrator for Oddity on Twitter to ask about the game's progress, and posted a screenshot of the resulting thread on Reddit. According to said screenshot, when prompted about the game's progress, the artist responded "Everything is going smoothly. I did take a temporary hiatus from the project to focus on health related issues, but I had been keeping tabs on it."
In addition, a dev named Maxxis in the project's Discord server also posted an update in March about the project. Here are his words: "I told you lot that I'd like to expand on communication, so here's a run down of last month - Harry recently returned from completing one of his many projects, and is working on tiling and maps daily again. Some new talent have recently onboarded to assist in workflow (illustration and in-game assets), and Pastel is still slaving away at the engine. Website layout is coming along nicely, and the "near future" is still near. Take that with any hopes or doubts, hopefully the former. Thanks for waiting." When asked shortly after if more people had joined the project's team, Maxxis responded with "Yes, trustworthy friends we've picked. Don't get the wrong idea, we're not in the position for another casting call."
Maxxis is also active on Twitter, and in October 2022, he made a tweet asking if the community would be interested in development streams in absence of news about the project. In his words, "Opinions on #gamedev streams in the the absence of news? I can't promise when I'd start or the frequency of them." Most of the replies were in support of this idea, so he followed up in early November by saying "Thank you and everyone for the heartfelt words. Teasing is a terrible thing to do at this point, and I don't think any of us would want that - So I'll assure whatever happens would be in a very small, casual scope." On November 22, he tweeted "Is OBS the best software these days? My test to get this thing running ended horribly LOL" implying that there have been efforts to get game dev streams working.
Now, let's look at the community. In absence of official material, the engine for the old Mother 4 project (which became Oddity) leaked, and a user named tvheadpal modified it to resemble Oddity, at least from its appearance in this trailer. This new engine is called M4ME, and tvheadpal has been posting on the Oddity subreddit periodically with footage of features he's gotten working. It looks very convincing, and it even has stuff like sound effects and music! The last post about it was on November 13 2022; looking forward to whatever comes from it.
That's about all I was able to gather. Sorry for the lack of links... RUclips's filter will kill me if I add them. Actually, it'll be a miracle if this edit is visible at all. You should be able to Google most of it, though.

And in an article with Nintendo Dream, they exclaimed to Itoi, “Let’s make a MOTHER 4!”, to which he humorously responded, “Making MOTHER 3 was already difficult enough for me! I’d like to be the player now”.

You're actually correct, this was originally a project called mother 4 from several years ago, but it had to be redone because of Nintendo copyright
This is a perfect way of avoiding Nintendo's copyright system. Don't give any relation to the Mother series, besides heavily implying it.
Nintendo seems to actively ignore Mother fangames and spin offs, though.

I don't think its about getting around copyright so much as it is about being inspired by them
The game was designed from the beginning such that they could do minimal rebranding to avoid legal problems should Nintendo ever void any opposition to the project. The sound track may still need to be redone in order to avoid any Mother references. Of course that would be ironic considering some of the legal problems that Earthbound had regarding its music.

I can't wait for the part of the game where the protagonist goes "wow, this thing is really strange. I might even call this occurrence an... Oddity." and the slightly later have a really tongue in cheek joke somewhere along the lines of "Yeah, my dad has gotten remarried a few times. My favorite was probably Mother 2, but Mother 3 was pretty fun even though she didn't speak English. After her I really was hoping for Mother 4, but that never happened. IDK, life's an Oddity like that."
Honestly, I'm kinda happy the re-branding happened. Now that it's not a fan-game, it can be sold and you guys can actually make some money off your hard work, because you guys freaking deserve it. Here's hoping for a Switch port sometime after PC launch!
Plus being officially a fan game tends to come with unnecessary restrictions & writing flaws. Like when a fan game is based in the same world as the official work but it just makes the whole thing feel fake instead of feeling like an alternate canon. Watching a fan sequel is kinda like watching a dream episode. It's technically as fake as any other fictional story but it somehow feels even more fake.
That's one reason why I like spiritual successors that use noticeable inspiration from something but are still distinct. When I was playing Portal Stories: Mel, I wasn't interested in any of the twist connections to elements of Portal 1 & 2 because I just thought "Well, ok but none of that's true so it's kinda hard to take it seriously."
The fact that the creator of Mother has said there won't be a Mother 4 any time soon makes this game truly one of a kind, having this game come to the Switch would make it even more special knowing that fact

One of the issues with that is so many people have contributed to this project over the years, some left while others joined on. I imagine trying to sell the game now while making sure all are compensated for their previous work would be a massive headache.
@@ians_parks yeah that is the only real problem I see, though there have been other projects before with similar developments that were able to work it out.
Although considering how many times the game has had to start from scratch, chances are there's a good number of people's work that isn't even in the final product.

I hope this will be the Bug Fables of the Mother series.
I mean Undertale already kinda filled that void, toxic fanbase aside, that game was amazing. Now we also have Omori which is also inspired by Mother and also does a great job filling in that void that Nintendo left.

@@RegalPixelKing Undertale is only inspired by Mother but it sets to do it's own thing, now that's not a bad thing in fact it's obvious by now that Undertale is a great game but it doesn't have the same gameplay nor structure as Mother, which is what Oddity is set out to do, give that feeling of "more Mother"

Since Oddity is it's own thing now, it could technically be ported to the Switch.
Except it's set in the 70s now and is not the same story they were planning for Mother 4 because mother 3 was set in the future from today as it is. It might look like Mother 3, but it's not tied to that story anymore, as far as we can tell.

I love how there are little bits and pieces when it was still called mother 4.
I'm very excited for this game, can't wait until it releases.
Honestly those bits and pieces make it feel like it’s lost it’s identity. If they redid everything, then it would feel fine, but their new art style for example clashes with the overworld sprites, and the music doesn’t feel mother-esc comparing it to the ending track that does. To me it’s a bit of a mess.

The games artist Mcmaxxis posts new sprites and artwork for the game on his twitter every so often. Sometimes he gives a it’ll be out when it’s ready, and says that news will be coming soon to the official twitter. These words may or may not have any actual weight behind them lol

This looks utterly amazing. When you said you were making serious overhauls with the rebrand, you weren't joking. The new fight UI looks cool, seeing the team actually on-screen in battles is a neat idea, action commands to boost attacks (if that's what's happening) looks great, the VOX idea seems interesting and every single sprite looks gorgeous. Nice to see things like the scrolling HP staying, too. I never lost faith in this project, and to see it taking such a fine shape on its own feet us truly wonderful to behold.
And hey, now that it's distanced from Mother, there's always the possibility of a port to Switch. And I'd bloody well love that.
This is what a true upgrade looks like and it still has the ambition from before unlike Pokemon Sea and Sky
