5 years ago I bought 3 different premium 35th anniversary g shocks including the dw5035d. I missed the boat on this one; haven’t seen it in person, but from what I can tell it’s a very similar experience to my dw5035d. I paid a pretty penny for it but it was so worth it. It’s absolutely the connoisseur’s g shock square. You can’t really tell what makes it so special based on specs or social media reviews. You really have to see that premium LCD in person, handle it, and feel the supple rubber on wrist, but once you do, you know you’ve got something special. If you love the g shock square, and are willing to pay a bit extra, you get the ultimate expression of a purist’s rubber digital watch. It still feels like an authentic g shock, not some gimmick (no offense metal g shocks). Might seem like a lot for a g shock, but I cant think of a watch nearly as satisfying in the $300-400 range, especially if you’ve already experienced some higher end mechanical watches. I love my grand seikos, omegas and rolex, etc. My 35th anniversary g shock feels right at home next to them. If you want a g shock that still feels like an authentic g but taken to the umpteenth degree, get this. And hey if you don’t like it, it probably wont be hard to find someone like me to happily take it off your hands for what you paid or maybe even more.
I have the basic DW 5600 because that’s what i have always wanted since i was 6 years old. I remember it was quite expensive here in Hungary back in the 80’s and it wasn’t widely available. Years and decades went by and my interest was oriented towards steel analog chronograph watches, and then one day i saw a square g-shock on youtube and i felt i just simply have to have one so i ordered one online. It was 2 years ago and somehow i just keep wearing it daily ever since i got it. I just love it so much and it’s so comfortable to wearing. I know it’s not exactly the same like back than but it’s absolutely bringing back the vibe from my childhood. I saw people are complaining about the extra functions like bt, solar and radio controlled movement, but thoes models are not the real ones. I also love the blue black light it is way better than the old vintage models had.
I loooove the gold accents and simplicity. ❤ Apparently G-Shock squares use the "divine proportion" often found in nature so the design just looks bang on...
I feel the same way about my 35th Anniversary version. This watch is for hardcore Casiophiles who really appreciate the history of the brand and the story behind the creation of the first G Shock! 🤣 Not only that but the difference in quality compared to other squares is unmistakeable. I have a GWM5610R-1JF with all the bells and whistles, solar, multiband, etc and I wear the anniversary model much more often. Really glad you managed to beat the scalpers Russ! 😁
I pulled the trigger on this and I love it. I had the same inner struggle: it’s too expensive, it doesn’t have solar etc. It’s such a looker that none of that matters. I love that gold dial and the fact that this is limited, very nice.
I was browsing through my home AD and found one sitting in their case today 🎉. I feel super-lucky to have found this treasure… it brings me right back to 1983 as I also owned the original watch. I like the “old school module” in this anniversary edition as it works exactly the same way as I remember it. I was actually at the AD to buy the MRG, then spied this in the corner of my eye. So, in a way I “saved” $3700. 😂 As a side note, there’s a cool little star on the MODE button. I love these little finishing touches.
***UPDATE***: Moved this one on in favor of the GCW-B5000UN-1JR (40th anniversary forged carbon in black). While the recrystallized is unbelievably good for the price, the forged carbon is next level. Take a look before these are also gone…
The screen alone looks so cool! Gives it a super retro look to me. Like those old yellow looking LCD screens. I absolutely love it. Also it’s really cool to find out that you are a tennis coach. I played tennis all throughout high school and continue to play all the way up to my 30s with my son. Just another reason to love this channel
Agree with you on every point. Features wise it’s “lacking” by todays G-Shock standards. But the second you take it out of the bag, you can tell it’s a very special watch. The finishing/plating is impeccable and the new bio-rubber is very supple. This one sits at the top next to my gw-5000 as my favorite G-Shock square. Enjoy the new watch, it’s a keeper!
Its amazing that people think this watch is lacking. The watch is meant to be a recreation of the original G shock that didn't have Bluetooth and all the other crap. I think this watch has been executed perfectly you couldn't ask for more
Man, you know that nostalgic feeling of, as a kid, turning the tv on and listening to your favorite show's opening theme? It's the same feeling I get, now as a 30 year old, everytime I watch one of your videos! Anyways, awesome content, as usual!
Beautiful watch. The materials look premium. My only nitpick is that has only as the basic functions, but I get this is an homage to the original G-Shock. They could release a GW 5610 version... Maybe later.
This is a seriously cool anniversary model to celebrate 40 years of the mighty G Shock! I love the subtle gold touches and that recrystallised case back looks like it would be so comfortable! Yeah it’s a little pricey but it’s sold out now anyway so it doesn’t matter what the retail price was anyway 😂 If you love it then that’s all that matters 🙌 Fantastic show as always MWC!
I bought it. I’m wearing it. And I don’t give a hoot about the lack of solar and multi band. This is EXACTLY what I’ve been wanting. Take me to 83’ and leave me there!
I have had this for a year now and I can say it's totally worth it! This is the most comfortable G Shock I have worn and timekeeping is within a second a month.
Been loving mine. Found it funny you reviewed my last two purchases in order. Happy to see I'm not the only one loving the gem square and well this lovely piece. Been daily driving both alternatively for a couple of weeks now.
I wanted it, I bought it. It hits different to any of the 5600 variants, I don’t have a 5000u so for me it’s more comparable with my metal squares in the way it feels. No regrets here 😊 Edit: and yeah, I’m going to wear it a lot, the 5610 will now do garden duties 👨🌾
Despite the fact that it has a two-year battery life despite not having multi-band, I bought it because I love the Square. That Seiko Lemon Face display, the steel screw-down caseback and those stars won me over. Absolutely gorgeous!
Great review MWC! I can appreciate your take on this gem. I think THIS g-shock is more of your paradox g-shock. It costs as much as a module (eg-GW5000U) with WAAY more features but yet- it’s about the sentiment connected to the original DW5000c AND their new “re-crystalization” application. Besides, weren’t ALL the anniversary squares a bit pricier than the regular issued (DW 5610 et al) square models? Anyway, I treat this G like I do my mechanicals- I appreciate the artistry, exclusivity and additional required care (changing the battery eventually). Cheers.
What a great homage … congrats on this nice acquisition. Hope it brings you joy every time you wear it. 😊 … Ok … Update since this comment: Now you’ve gone and done it my friend! 😅 … you convinced me to get this one for myself! It’s not sold out in the Canadian G-Shock website. I was looking into acquiring a 40th anniversary G-Shock but all of them are over $1K and thought I would never get one … BUT … after watching this review, I was curious to see if, in Canada, they were still available … and there you go; I pressed the “Order Now!” button 😊 Thanks for having me spend a portion of my Bonus on myself with this great homage 40th anniversary watch 😉👍🏻
I agree with you because firstly it's a beautiful square and I think Casio did a great job honoring the original with this release. I would have liked to get one but I have a lot of squares and while I love the look of them, they are a little on the big side for me. I still wear them but I'm more likely to pick my baby g square that fits me better. As a collectors item this 40th anniversary square is a great piece and I agree that adding features would take away from the character. I would like a square that says "Project Team Tough" on the bezel someday, but I think I will wait for the 50th anniversary.
Very cool, great addition to the collection! Personally, I'm gonna stick to the original gw-5000, the pre 5000u version, but I think this is a really cool one!
A beautiful day way back in 85/86 a cousin offered me a Casio bought in Paris. For a 7 y.old portuguese kid must say it was a HUGE GIFT. Lost it some years later.😢 Not a G Shock,it was a small case very basic one. But you know...time flies...and today living in Switzerland and working as a watch decorator for a luxury top brand i have a GW M5610 as E.D.C. 😅 That really sets me appart from my collegues and their smartwatches😂 Looking to buy this 40th anniversary edition too. 🤗
Great video, thanks! I do love a square G Shock. This one looks really nice 👍 I have a DW BB with the negative display and the DW red line/tough solar/radio controlled model. They are great fun and I enjoy wearing them as much as any of my automatics. I might need another one now.
Just started my USTA season here in Colorado. Got this bad boy last week for my match watch. I absolutely love it, the weight in hand just feels premium
Its a pretty thing with some lovely little touches all over and for the diehard G Shock fans i think its a must. Its still relatively inexpensive in the watch world too so if you can get the chance to buy at retail then get in there quick
OMG - I’m on holiday from the UK in Florida and have just spotted one of these in Macy’s department store. I quickly revisited your review and then bought it and now can’t wait to take my Breitling Aviastar off and put this on, I feel so lucky. It’s my 2nd GShock the other is a g5600e which is also superb it’s been so hot here I was due for some good fortune 😂
Oh yes, I've seen this one already! And as much as in general I dislike gold (MT-G "Year of the Rabbit" is just "eww" to me), I really like the looks of this particular edition - especially the display. Seriously, I wasn't aware it's even possible to do such thing with regular, gray LCD. And, that it will make such a difference...
10 years ago my girlfriend bought me the 30th Anniversary for my birthday, was a big purchase for her at the time and used all her then disposable cash. Now on the 40th G-Shock anniversary she is now my wife and not long till 10 years married ❤
Yes. It absolutely is. People need to shut up dripping about "waaah no solar...waaaah no MB6" Not every fucking G needs those. I love mine. Got it from the Carnaby street store an hour after theyd had the delivery. Haters gonna hate
At 43 years of age, I just received baby's first G-shock (5600) today. I haven't worn a digital since I was a kid but am cautiously optimistic that I'm gonna like it!
Talking about buying a watch because you love it. I've just bought automatic Marlin Timex Snoopy with him riding on a motorbike 😂 ... some won't like it, but I LOVE IT 😁👍
I have an original DW-5600 (691 movement) that I received at work in 1990. It's still going strong and I wear it quite often. I think I've only changed the battery four times. One interesting thing about it is the calendar. It only goes to the year 2029. After that, it resets to 1985! 😁
Yes, it only goes to 2029, but it doesn't matter, every 28 years the calendar days are repeated, so in 2030 you can set the watch to the year 2002 and it will work fine.
Very interested in this one, but my main G Shock is a solar powered model. How hard is it to replace the batter after a couple years? Like you, I'd want to wear this watch.
I don't own any Casios/G-Shocks...but I want one. I turned 40 this year, born in '83, same as G-Shock. So i thought about getting this watch as my very first G-Shock. It makes it a bit more special to me!
I love this case, but it's a bit barren for the price in terms of actual functions. What I'd really love to see is a feature-packed one like the GLX-5600, with all the cool aesthetics
Congrats to the owners, please do wear and enjoy this piece instead of keeping in a box. There's also the DW-5600H series coming out soon. It might be worth checking for those who want a smarter square, kinda like the GBD-200. The DW-H5600-2 is a nice shade of blue in my opinion.
I feel the same.. I've never been one to keep watches in Boxes through fear of scratches or bumps.. Watches are for Wearing! I'd feel bad just leaving it untouched in a Safe or something lol.
is the blue one you're talking about the one with the "Reversed" LCD screen? (black bacground..clear numbers?) if so?.. Ooooooh.. I REALLY wanna get Me one of those Bad-Boys.. very nice!.
@@mrmagoo.3678 yeah, it should have a very legible and low power consuming reversed lcd display, based on the memory in pixel technology. It's going to be the most technologically advanced square so far, I guess, suitable both for casio fans and regular joggers etc.
I have to admit. As a huge tennis fan, I like your channel even more now that I know you are a tennis coach! But really, seriously loving this channel and all the watches!
It's been five years with my 35th anniversary version; I have put a back protective sheet from aliexpres and a screen protector to be able to use it without guilt.
Really like the channel, can’t afford to go buying watches Willy Nilly, but I do like ‘em guvnor. Plus, I like you doing your updates on the latest and greatest with you zany approach. Makes me feel “smiley” after watching. Ta “Click it, go on, CLICK IIITTT!”
Hey there Madman! Love the vids and this watch. I just found one new and can't believe it. Question for you on the new bio strap they include. I really like the look and it's feel. Even though it's subtle, it has a very slight cool sheen to it (and the bezel) that typical 5000 series bands don't. Even having it less than a day I can see a mark where the buckle rests on my wrist. How has your strap handled? Still going strong or showing lots of signs of wear? I wonder if it will last even as long as regular straps. So my concern now is that the only exact replacement straps I can find are $55+ because they include the gold hardware Buckle and keeper as well. That's pricey. Do other watches use this same bio strap so maybe pricing will go down? I don't want to get a regular strap once mine needs replacement from say the 5610 as the sheen wouldn't match the bezel. Thoughts on all this?
No doubt the watch looks amazing. The gold really works well. But I am sorry to say they dropped the ball with the module. At that price I really wish they had upped the module. But I guess it does everything you need. And certainly looks the part.
It's a lovely watch, can even steer me for the re-crystallized details. Would have liked the anniversary models to be more reprint editions of classic editions and that they all had 7-10 year battery life. As the originals had. Yes, I know about solar, but when Casio has modules with up to 10 years, why not? I have customized my DW5735 with DW5030-1 crystal. The screen seems also very similar to the DW5040.
Hey, Russ. If you love it, that's what counts, man. Great review! :) It's definitely a collector's watch. I wouldn't be a buyer, but I can see the appeal.
You wear that bad boy! Congrats for being able to snag one of them before they are sold out! I just got myself a Seiko SRPD orange dial and I love it! I couldn’t care less that its less of a watch than others SKX 🤦🏻♂️ to me its the most beautiful watch in my collection! Plus when i regulated it on my new Weishi 1000 😮 its accurate to +2 sec per day 🤪 Have a great day my friend and keep making some of the best content! 👍🏼 ✌🏼😎👍🏼
I was expecting the wife to say, “Russell! For gods sake go and put some Clothes on!”. All you’ve been wearing for the last three days is that flippin’ kids watch!”… 😉
The awesome Michelangelo Ninja Turtle badge is a confirmation of the fact that I'm watching the correct channel. Sadly, for the people in the UK, that was censored and renamed as Hero Turtle or something
The brick motif on the dial reminds me of Super Mario Bros. That's a good thing. Still prefer the GW-5000 as the ultimate do everything G-Shock square. *commented on the Mario Bros look before I finished the whole video. Wife's comment is on point. Lol
Thank you for your video, I'm finally decided I'll buy one of that 1st thing in the morning tomorrow also the gw-m5610-1 so I will enjoy multiband 6 as well
OK. This one got me. I use my 5000u and it never does look great in my box. This one does. I like a digital watch to contrast my automatics and I've always loved the square gshocks. That gold face, premium feel, and the backlight..... it really is a beautiful watch
Castor oil and corn. Tbh that sounds so 19th century, yet it's a space age eco friendly thing. Casio has that 20th century Japanese feel we all fantasize about, might has well admit it 😅
Is that the same material the MoonSwatch is made out of? I have the Mars Watch and love the new Square. Ever since I saw a vid on the Seiko Lemon Face, any display that even looks golden has my attention. Beautiful watch!
I am having a hard time choosing between this and the 5000u for a higher end resin g shock . My heart says this and my brain says 5000u. If you could keep only one, which would it be?
That’s one gorgeous watch to own. I have a dw5600 but have missed the bus on this one regrettably, and I wouldn’t buy one from a flipper. Really chuffed that you’ve got yours though, excellent news - enjoy! :-)
So what your saying is I have to buy this even though I have other squares? 🤔🤔 hmmm ok then!! I will get it as a self treat because youtube just monetised me 🤣don’t tell Mrs Badger 🤫

At 43 years of age, I just received baby's first G-shock (5600) today. I haven't worn a digital since I was a kid but am cautiously optimistic that I'm gonna like it!
It's a wonderful display!
Exactly like the one on my DW-5735D-1BER😊
Project Team Tough I love that put it on the face of the watch.
The yellow display is really lovely. Some gshocks have also a green display that makes them very readable
It's great, I love mine. If you had a square g shock in the 1980's, you'd get it. It's super cool.
Talking about buying a watch because you love it. I've just bought automatic Marlin Timex Snoopy with him riding on a motorbike 😂 ... some won't like it, but I LOVE IT 😁👍
That is very cool my friend!
I was for sure this channel had over 100K subs. I like your channel sir. Continue doing what you are doing. Hail Casio!!!!
@@Turmogo Thanks for tip!😁
This as been my first G-Shock square. I think the strap is too short. In my opinion the Timex Command Encounter has a superior strap and fit.
100%!!!!
Get a watch that matches your birth year
Finally found one for a good price! $300 brand new. I can't wait ti get it!!!
I totally understand how you can be so hyped about this gshock.
Even tho I personally don't see the point, I'm glad you found something you love.
I love this case, but it's a bit barren for the price in terms of actual functions. What I'd really love to see is a feature-packed one like the GLX-5600, with all the cool aesthetics
I was waiting for your take on this. I like mine so much that I am pondering selling my other resin squares. 🤔
@@zibel5007 and it looks fantastic too! :D I've got that on My "Must Have" list too!.
I have to admit. As a huge tennis fan, I like your channel even more now that I know you are a tennis coach! But really, seriously loving this channel and all the watches!
There are some brilliant 40th anniversary pieces. I don’t have an all metal square and so I’m seriously thinking about the Haze edition.
I have it and I love it, much fancier than my spike lee but both really good quality and comfortable
Same here.
But it is always like this with G-Shock, most special editions are based on standard modules.
Gorgeous 😍 I love it. The gold screen pops
My GW-M5610 with MB6 and Tough Solar is the best Casio, can't beat it with a stick
I reckon if you had this in your hands. You’d at least think twice;)
would love a video of one of you tennis coaching lessons!
a fellow tennis coach and watch enthusiast. Right on! Love the channel mate.
Btw I’m about a 9 UTR level aspiring to play on the ITF Tour.
Congrats on your purchase! It's a beautiful commemorative timepiece! Objectively though, it can't compete with the new 3495 module watches.
Super review thank you. You are the reason that I have g shock and casio I have bought 5 casio / g shock from your reviews the best models :)
It's definitely a collector's watch. I wouldn't be a buyer, but I can see the appeal.
My dream G-Shock Square! Gonna make it a reality right now!
Great review Russ!! Just bought one!
Plus when i regulated it on my new Weishi 1000 😮 its accurate to +2 sec per day 🤪
Have a great day my friend and keep making some of the best content! 👍🏼
✌🏼😎👍🏼
what a G-Shock, this Goldie Sun burst beauty gives envy to buy one... thanks for this mad review again!!! 😂😂😂
I was expecting the wife to say, “Russell! For gods sake go and put some Clothes on!”.
All you’ve been wearing for the last three days is that flippin’ kids watch!”…
😉
Congratulations on getting this watch! Much more better than the rock version lol.
The awesome Michelangelo Ninja Turtle badge is a confirmation of the fact that I'm watching the correct channel. Sadly, for the people in the UK, that was censored and renamed as Hero Turtle or something
Just picked up this watch brand new for well under $300 😁, This watch is my Birthyear watch, so I will be enjoying this watch for years to come!
The brick motif on the dial reminds me of Super Mario Bros. That's a good thing.
Still prefer the GW-5000 as the ultimate do everything G-Shock square.
*commented on the Mario Bros look before I finished the whole video. Wife's comment is on point. Lol
Now you can imagine what value we got back in the 80s!
My only G shock is 2year old mud master it came from a lad in work who got an all singing Apple Watch I paid £40 for it
Thank you for your video, I'm finally decided I'll buy one of that 1st thing in the morning tomorrow also the gw-m5610-1 so I will enjoy multiband 6 as well
Just about saved the day. Thank you good sir
OK. This one got me. I use my 5000u and it never does look great in my box. This one does. I like a digital watch to contrast my automatics and I've always loved the square gshocks. That gold face, premium feel, and the backlight..... it really is a beautiful watch
Congratulations for the new purchase. I own the basic DW-5600 and happy with it, bought it for $45…this one is an interesting piece but not for me.
so do I. Flippin' love it.
Good show dear Russell.👍
Castor oil and corn. Tbh that sounds so 19th century, yet it's a space age eco friendly thing.
Casio has that 20th century Japanese feel we all fantasize about, might has well admit it 😅
Is that the same material the MoonSwatch is made out of? I have the Mars Watch and love the new Square. Ever since I saw a vid on the Seiko Lemon Face, any display that even looks golden has my attention. Beautiful watch!
What a beautiful G Shock, the gold display is stunning, I'm sold if I can find one. Neil (subscribed).
Wonder if you can get a mod kit similar to the 40th anniversary edition. 😊
What a nostalgic looking G shock. One day, i will be able to afford one . 👌
A fine addition to my collection! - General Grevious
It’s ok I’ll stick with my GWM5610 I got it 8 years ago and it never let down
Hi i received my watch in regular gshock tin box instead of special packaging. How do i know it is authentic.
Send me a close up of the watches face my friend. If you have crystallised metal for the caseback and buckle I’d say it’s real
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR how can i send close up of watch face and i have crystallised caseback and buckle.
I am having a hard time choosing between this and the 5000u for a higher end resin g shock . My heart says this and my brain says 5000u. If you could keep only one, which would it be?
I’m exactly the same! That’s why I got both!!!;)
GREAT WATCH I LIKE IT CASIO G SHOCK IS JUST AWESOME I JUST BOUGHT THE DW 9052 1VDR NICE WATCH I LOVE IT GREAT VIDEO BRO KEEP MAKEING MORE PEACE OUT
That’s one gorgeous watch to own. I have a dw5600 but have missed the bus on this one regrettably, and I wouldn’t buy one from a flipper. Really chuffed that you’ve got yours though, excellent news - enjoy! :-)
Don’t get a flippers watch my friend!!!
could you swap the module out for a 5610u if you knew what you were doing? so the gold would still show over the new module?
So what your saying is I have to buy this even though I have other squares? 🤔🤔 hmmm ok then!! I will get it as a self treat because youtube just monetised me 🤣don’t tell Mrs Badger 🤫
