Just to be clear, only the DW-5040PG lacks solar and waveceptor, like all anniversary editions. All full metal G squares including these two have solar, multiband waveceptor, bluetooth, and that wonderful STN display.
I have now received my Casio 40th anniversary editions. Silver with dark dial for daytime 06:00 to 18:00. Gold with light disc for evening time 18.00 to 06.00. Then the day is covered with the best choice.
The speckly ones are stunning! I really am surprised how much I like them. As I was born in 1983 and my first watch in 1991 was a Square, I really should get an Anniversary Edition one of these days. My 5610 is just too good at the moment. 😂
The gold-carbon variant is stunning. I wear a lot of black titanium and gold jewelery pieces, and this is a piece that allows me to take a rugged cool watch traveling that genuinely can do *anything* and not have to worry about sporting a 20k$ or even 10k$ watch!
i have a customized casio oak frost silver which the band texture is rough and perhaps given the material usage and quality the band kinda rust over time. I guess with this new 40th anniversary texture statement crytallisation, the sparkle effect does does push innovation to the next level with recrystallization and deep-layer hardening, that layering protects the finishing from scratches and provide the crystal shine effect. I think casio has done well with adding frosty band into their collection without messing up the quality. The silver crystal is on my wanted list. The price is steep here in Asia but being the first line, if they do wanna keep the line going well.. the first is always the OG collection !
8:27: Casually just breaks out the coolest watch ever made... Very nice. Anyway, I was at first a little disappointed that the DW-5040PG-1 didn't have atomic time or solar, but the display is so pretty, I'm good with it. I just have to remind everyone Father's Day is coming up, lol. Imagine if that MR-G had that same goldish display... Do you think it would be the perfect watch, or would it ruin the aesthetics?
I thought they'd have a texture based on the look. Good to know they're smooth. Also I believe they're surface hardened. I have the 5000u, so I'm good, but these look great.
I'm really interested in the gold-tone version, because of its positive display. I'm thinking the recrystallization pattern will ultimately conceal minor scratches much better than the original metal versions?
I wish the steel version didn't have the inverted display. I almost bought the Tokyo Twilight but the display really wasn't visible on the wrist at anything but a direct angle
“Recrystallization” apparently. I like the resin one. I wonder how the bio resin will hold up compared to the regular resin band and bezels 🤔 Thanks for the vid.
I'm optimistic. Casio makes synthetic sweat by the 55 gallon drum. I love the idea of bioresin. I want nice things and I want tough things, but I dont want to cause harm just for that. I trust in good engineering, we can make better products that are more conscious at the same time.
Very nice Indeed! I would love one of the Crystallized square one's, I have a GW-5000 1JF and a 35th anniversary Dw-5735d-1b, I just really like the MB6 function, as of now the Bluetooth function will "get me by" so to speak, on future models.that Mr. G square is Beautiful! As a side note do you notice a difference in MB6 reception with the all steel versions over the regular MB6 models?
Excellent review, wonderful collection. I prefer the classic, standard module over solars. Have you noticed how accurate is the new battery operated module on that 5040pg? Subbed. Many thanks for the review 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻
very nice review!!! i just picked up the 5610U but i'm so tempted to return it and get the DW-5040PG-1. I'm a little torn and maybe you can help. I love so much about the 5610U, looks, functionality, module specs, solar and multiband. It's got a ton going for it and i can't stop staring. Totally brings me back to childhood but with modern flair. But i really really really dont like how its viewing angle is so limited. I like glancing at my watch for time, but i find i have to have it angled very specifically to read anything. I'm between 2 notches on the band, one is kinda tight and the other is loose enough that i have to move the watch with one hand to get it out from under my sleeve. Both get old quickly. I'm not sure it its the caseback, but i wouldn't say it feels amazing on the wrist or that i can wear it all day no prob. It irritates eventually. I keep trying both slots to see if it breaks in better and hasn't. The DW-5040PG-1looks stunning. I love the gold screen and having the brickwork more prominent. With so many square's looking similar, i really like that this is traditional yet stands out as unique. Do you think this model has a wider range of viewing angles than the 5610U? would its screw caseback be more comfortable? Even if the band leave me between notches, maybe the caseback would make it feel better overall. I can live with it lacking solar (but it is cool) and i can always manually adjust the time with other multiband watches. But I do wish it had both. I don't use world time a ton but it sure is nice when you do, so I'd eventually miss that too. I think it's looks keep bringing me back to want this, but i would miss some of the 5610's tech. If it is better to see time at more angles, and feels better on the wrist, it might be for me. But if its the same bad viewing angle and fit it similar, i guess i should stick with the 5610. Any feedback on these questions is much appreciated and I'd love to hear your thoughts on if you think i'd like this 40th better than the 5610 based on my comments. Thanks for a great video and your time!
Yes, good questions. There are too many squares to pick from. Both the GWM5610 and the DW series have TN lcds, and will have similar visibility. The U model has an LED backlight, which is better than the earlier ones with the EL panel. Its possible the anniversary model has better visibility in some situations but I'm not sure. The screwback, most people think is more comfortable. I don't know about everyone though. If you're still using a resin strap you run the same risk of having a not quite right fit. These are a lot of money to just take a guess at. I'd suggest trying to fit one on somewhere. I think a better bet is the GW-5000U. It has the solar, multiband, but it's a screwback, and has a softer strap. Nothing beats the full metal if you can save up. Lots of microadjust, and a great STN display, which is very very legible. see if you can see one in person.
Thanks so much for the great response. Its very helpful and I like the other suggested models too. I kind of want a traditional square but just a little difference which is why i think the 40th anniversary catches my eye. Just a little flair. The 5000U is a bit too monochromatic for me, even though I know how special it is. Full metal does look awesome too but since i wear dive watches as well, i kind of want a more sporty look in a daily beater (that i don't want to worry about around my 4 year old) and save the metal flash for my fancier watches. That being said the GMWB5000PC-1, also a 40th anniversary model looks insanely cool! I didn't know these metal bracelets had lots of microadjust. My metal bracelets tend to move around which I dislike, so that was another reason i haven't looked into metal g-shocks much. DO you know if this one has microadjust and a STN display?@@lookatwrist
To my knowledge, all bracelet model full metal squares have micro adjust holes.4 to choose from. I think they are closer together than the holes on the resin straps, so you're more likely to get a good fit. I think all full metal squares have the STN display as well. And only the full metal ones. The GW-5000, GW-B5600, do not.
Great video, very detailed up close with them, which one is your favourite? Love to see what they look like swapping the modules over, think gold with gold screen and silver with gold buttons and positive display may look even better?… 😬
Probably the full gold, it just seems special. And I was probably not clear, the two full metal ones have solar, multiband waveceptor, and bluetooth. That module probably wont swap with the gold. Maybe?
Great collection you got there. I picked up the dw-5040 since that was a must for me. Which one of the new gold or silver variants do you prefer having them in hand?
Hard to choose they're both special. But the steel one from a distance looks like a flat muted "grey" color. The gold feels more special. Im not a gold watch person but for a limited edition gold makes sense.
@@lookatwrist thank you, I am not a gold watch person either but was curious since the “recrystallized” steel on these are supposed to make the metal 3x harder than regular stainless steel and durability wise the gold might hold its look longer. They are both neat regardless.
Thanks for your video, do you know if the recrystallized watches shine bright in the sun light similar to a diamond? Would have liked to see how they look with the sunlight on them? Thanks!
Thanks for the video!!! By the way, I'm interested in getting the regular stainless steel model with negative display... can you please elaborate where you found the steel bracelet like the one shown on this video? I'd like to buy customize it the way you did for yours.
I thought that if I was gonna get the model, I may as well go all the way. It explodes on my wrist and I like it way more than I thought. I wear it a lot actually, more than most on the table.
I had an issue with the steel PS model. The bezel had just about none of the carbon specs on it, and completely mismatched the bracelet to the point it wasn't wearable. The bezel looked like it was spayed with silver paint. My AD is sending another one, but that was disappointing. I saw another review showing the gold one, and the reviewer even showed that some of the links were a very different tone (darker) than the rest. I don't recall a mention of this in the marketing. Yes no two are alike, but I wasn't aware of the huge differences in color and finish appearance. It seems like luck of the draw with these. You can currently see a good example of a mismatched one on Sakura.
That's disappointing, I guess I got lucky. I wonder if it's just lighting in some of those? Weird luck with your bezel. Maybe that was a rare one that would have been worth 10x in a few years?
The negative displays on the anniversary models should be a MIPS display. They should also be tough solar, multiband 6, and Bluetooth. That would go some way to justifying the asking price. The crystalline finish is interesting but is almost certainly an applied coating that doesn’t extend through the metal.
Id be interested to know if its a coating or not. I actually don't think so. I think the entire mold throughout is pressed. We'll see photoso f a battery change soon enough.
The big boy! That's the MRG-B5000. It's an amazingly made watch, on a different level. But, it's not for sane people that's for sure. You can get a full metal Gshock starting at $400 or so if you hunt, the MRG is 10x that.
I'm not 100% sure, but "sparkly" hardware seems like it was stonewashed. The process is sometimes used in production of various steel parts and knife blades. It gives that specific muted sparkly look and better scratch resistance.
Yes. I really should do research *before* making a video hah! But this recrystalized process is supposedly even harder and more durable than solid metal. "a deep-layer hardening process which makes these cases three times harder than regular stainless steel"
I am very lucky, but because of my family, friends, and my wife. These are just things. I'll also sell half of what you see before a year from now. 99% of the watches in my older videos have been sold.
I am not convinced by the DW5040 : the module is simply too basic for the 300$ price tag. It's basic to look like the original DW5000 ? literally unbelievable argument.
It's not like they discontinued the GW-M5610, GW-B5600, or GW-5000. Plenty of amazing options out there with all the bells and whistles. The 5040 is just like the 5035, 5030, 5025, 20th anniversary, 10th.. etc. They all sell out and they all go up in value over time. I survived just fine for 20 years wearing squares without Solar/Atomic, this piece is for occasional wear and collecting. My GW-5000U still will get the bulk of wrist time.
Thanks for showing these details. I made my mind not to buy them. They are for specific occasions like you said, and I guess I will wait for future variants.
I do agree, but it's important to note that some companies just raise prices and move upbrand. Casio still makes the $50 DW-5600E, they haven't moved upscale, they've added options. Seiko would have made premium squares as the basic ones got discontinued. I think Casio has the right idea.
I think you dont need to import any more. The GW-5000U is sold by Casio in the US now, I believe. That's the watch on the table that I show in this video, I think for most people that's the right choice.
I would say these anniversary editions are nothing but overpriced products aimed at the overzealous Casio watch enthusiast. Just stick with the stock options!
That's exactly what they are, but I have a more positive view on it. They're fun options for the enthusiast. It's not like they discontinued the GWM5610 or GW5000U that I show in this video. You can still pick up the DW5600 for next to nothing. That's what I love about Casio. Other brands 'move upmarket'. Casio just adds some upmarket options.
Very difficult to wear pieces! It's like you have to be a serious collector to just have them as a decor object or be someone like BB King to wear on stage... So unpractical, Sorry!
I sort of agree, but what I appreciate Casio doing is continuing to make the $200 GW-5000U, $100 GWM5610, and $50 DW5600E. Some other brands would have discontinued those or raised their prices. So these limited expensive editions are completely optional, to be ignored by those that feel they're overpriced, but it's an option for the GShock square superfan. Everyone wins?
@lookatwrist It's not suppose to be that expensive IMHO. As much as I love Casio (I really think that it's the best watch brand out there) and G-Shock squares - I can't justify paying $1000 for 40th anniversary edition. I definitely can afford it, but I'm thinking how many great watches I can buy for the price of one iconic watch? Also - it looks unique and gorgeous, I might just get one later, so forget what I've said.
I just can't like Digital quarz watches , everyone has a different taste , my favorites are Automatic Dress watches , it would be perfect with titanium Bracelets
Just to be clear, only the DW-5040PG lacks solar and waveceptor, like all anniversary editions. All full metal G squares including these two have solar, multiband waveceptor, bluetooth, and that wonderful STN display.
Who designed those anniversary watches, DJ Khaled? They look awful and the target group clearly is "douchebag with not taste".
The display on the 5040PG is really lovely.
I LOVE!!! How the finish of the silver one gives a cinder like appearance. It looks like I’m wearing a watch made of solid concrete.

That is correct. There is nothing that beats a G Square
Wow, nice collection of squares. The Mr. G is a fine watch.

Impressive collection. Out of all of the watchs on your .... Soft table. I own 2 of the models.
The resin square arrived on my doorstep today direct from Casio. I found the packaging lacking but, the watch is too dope!
Packaging definitely simple. I don't mind too much, the boxes take up a lot of space! I have a whole bin in storage.

I'm really interested in the gold-tone version, because of its positive display.

Yeah I think so, it will probably provide a little bit of cover as it ages.
You're not going to be able to scratch it easily

I think you dont need to import any more. The GW-5000U is sold by Casio in the US now, I believe. That's the watch on the table that I show in this video, I think for most people that's the right choice.
I am a weirdo!
I’m leaving this crap with no solar or multiband Casio are loosing the plot charging 269 for this what are they thinking
They did the same thing 5, 10, and 15 years back. Sells out every time.
No solar no bueno
So unpractical,
Sorry!
It's overpriced AF. Watches look really good, but man, come on!
Each star represents a decade…is not a rate thing
Omg, these are terrible.
man you have a ton of money right there
I just can't like Digital quarz watches , everyone has a different taste , my favorites are Automatic Dress watches , it would be perfect with titanium Bracelets
For me it's all about time and place. Going back and forth between gshocks and automatics makes it feel like things are always different.
