Size of whole arm (even full body) should be considered, too imho. So many people photograph a watch really close up & make a judgement based on that when it looks totally different when viewed zoomed out which is how most others will view it 👍🏻
You are correct, dial diameter makes a big difference to how a watch looks on wrist, however, this is subjective. I would argue lug to lug and case profile is more important, because it affects comfort.
This may sound silly, but it also depends on if you are wearing a Tshirt/polo shirt or a long shirt/jumper. Big thumbs up for the mental awareness advert, btw.

As I’ve spent years having hits and Mrs. with watches, I think this is a clarification of the results that I’ve encountered. Excellent work as always, my man.
37 to 40mm dial for me, lug to lug no more than 47mm. Thankfully the trend for dinner plate sized watches is on the wane (apart from Citizen Eco Drive chronos unfortunately) with many more offerings in my sweet spot .
I may be a wimp, but my motivation for small watches is weight. I don't care about optical shenanigans, if it's uncomfortable to lug around. And don't give me the balance argument - heavy is heavy. A good strap (thick leather, fabric, or rubber) can help with suspension, but a heavy bracelet can't. It only adds to the weight.
Had to thumbs-up for the land-shark. It looks a bit big on me, but it was a gift from my dad when starting college, and I will always love it, no matter who thinks it looks like a plug...

You make such good videos! In this video you have again addressed exactly the points that are important when it comes to the effect of size on the wrist. This is a topic that many of your colleagues hardly ever address, but it is so important. ⭐⭐🌟⭐⭐
I would like to recommend the Smiths Everest Expedition 36mm from Time Factors. This would definitely fit a smaller wrist but also looks great on my 7 1/2 inch wrist. It also has the history of being the first watch to reach the summit of mount Everest and is a British brand, Russell!!! What's not to like when it only costs £345 and comes with a Miyota nine series movement with 100m water resistance and 20,000 m/A anti-magnetic resistance .
YES! I’v been saying this forever. More RUclipsrs and reviewers need to show the dial opening measurements. That along with the lug to lug gives me a good idea of how it will wear but almost no one measures the dial in their reviews. Also Ima need you to review that M36! I had no idea vertex had a 36mm model!
I completely agree with this. The dimensions of the Junghans max bill sound amazing on paper, but I was surprised how big it looked on wrist. Makes me wonder about the Vulcain Skindiver, that has a 30mm dial size - which would explain why so many are saying it wears larger than the dimensions suggest.
Very educational - thank you! It’s amazing how many times you can look at dimensions on paper and convince yourself it will or won’t fit then try it on in person and the numbers just don’t add up. You really do have to try it on.
That makes perfect sense!!!!! My primary concern always was the lug-to-lug size and the diameter... Perfect !!!! Regards from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Love the channel...
Its quite suprising what can be worn. Im a bigger guy and was adamant 42mm was the minimum for me. Yet i can wear my Lorier neptune quite happily at 39mm due to the longer lugs. The lug to lug measurment is the most important for me by far.
So glad you made this vid. So tired of size queens always complaining about big watches. Dial size is a really important dimension although i do think Lug to lug is the most important. Also lug width on small watxhes makes a big difference. 36mm with an 18 mm strap looks too small whereas a 36 with a 20mm strap looks ok on my wrist.
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR all my wife would see is "where the money came from, how much it cost and what did it fuck*ing cost?" Though. real belter of a watch though.

Well, that clarifies why pilot watches are underrepresented on the MWC show. Flieger type B dials are my absolute favorite layout, and my Citizen Avion is one of my most frequently worn pieces. But your point about dial size translating to apparent watch size is completely valid. Dimensions won’t tell you the full story about fit. Lug curvature also plays a huge role. For my 6.5 inch wrist the sweetspot is around the 38 mm mark. And I tend to stear away from watches with large dials. A dial can make or brake a watch. And usually a large dial makes a watch look larger than the case size. I only wish more companies would show dial and lug to lug size, as these are the most important ones
Brilliant video Russell. I've got tiny wrists so my sweet spot is normally 37-38mm but its clear that diameter size is no clear indicator. A 42mm Moonswatch looks absolutely fine on me but the 40mm Sub looks huge. Going to have to start taking y measuring guage out with me next time i'm watch hunting
Chunkiest watch I had was a Tissot PRS516..had a valjoux chronograph in the Beast and was BIG...My little girly wrists just weren't made for that sheer amount of stainless steel.
The dial size is such a game changer. My MM300 is such a wearable watch because the dial is small and the lug size is 20mm. You'd never know it is a 44mm watch. On a good rubber strap, it is easily a daily watch.
You are really simple guy~ there are so many thing to consider when buying a watch but you consider the dial size is the only one important thing that matters when choosing watch. I have an 8 1/2 interest I don’t have that problem. I actually tried on a diesel big daddy at one of the local department stores just to see how ridiculous it would look good actually according to the people working there, I was one of the few people that didn’t look ridiculous on lol I’ve got to go on a diet.
Hasn't this got something to do with the mechanics of automatics, the smaller dial means the smaller the hands so less energy is needed to move them and a longer time before the spring winds down.
I don’t think the watch should take up your entire wrist. The Tudor that is in your sweet spot looks too big to me. Too large for me to personally wear if I had your wrist. Just my personal preference. Note: I don’t think it looks bad on you not that you should care.

Interesting take, I hadn't heard nor thought of that. Still not sure how to use that dimension versus L2L though.
The Vertex M36 is such a nice looking watch but so pricey :(
It’s where it’s made, how it’s made and what it’s made with my friend. It really is that price for a reason
It's only a couple hundred more than the CWC version and looks way better
8 inches here. I don’t mind going smaller. Makes me look huge when I look down
I noticed these points as well. I think that my SMP300 looks good on me. But I've tried on a Speedy Pro and it looked way to big to my liking (even though the lug to lug is shorter).
I have an 8 1/2 interest I don’t have that problem. I actually tried on a diesel big daddy at one of the local department stores just to see how ridiculous it would look good actually according to the people working there, I was one of the few people that didn’t look ridiculous on lol I’ve got to go on a diet.
Also if you have small wrists but large hands/long fingers you can get away with larger watches
Nice video👍do any other SLA's fit these dimensions?
My SLA071?
I've never been able to get my head around the proportions of Nomos watches: huge lugs and tiny dials. It just doesn't make sense to me.
I'm SHOOK
Hasn't this got something to do with the mechanics of automatics, the smaller dial means the smaller the hands so less energy is needed to move them and a longer time before the spring winds down.
And then there’s Casio who sells small duro 39 where it’s actually 36 and the dial size is so small that it’s hardly to read it and look like a toy
I don’t think the watch should take up your entire wrist. The Tudor that is in your sweet spot looks too big to me. Too large for me to personally wear if I had your wrist. Just my personal preference. Note: I don’t think it looks bad on you not that you should care.
