"There is no purpose in life, we are all just clumps of dust fused together for a bit and then we die" - Thank you Andy, you'd make a great motivational speaker.
The thing with water resistance is it's never about the watch being crushed at 51 meters if it's only rated at 50. It's the gaskets at the crown, backplate or buttons if it has them. And even then it's not like you have to actually DIVE to 50 meters to experience 5 Bar water pressure. Just washing hands CAN compromise weaker gaskets, I googled standard tap water pressure in my country, Average is 3-4 BAR but you can find 5-6 Bar of water pressure coming out of your TAP at home. Riding a jetski, and falling off, hitting the water at xx MPH? Guess what that can be quite the pressure if it hits your watch at the right angle. Or getting hit by a 2 meter wave when in the sea swimming. Just a few examples

As the owner of a Speedy reduced for 20 years, believe me when I tell you I really felt that "local watchmaker runs for the hills when you tell them what you've got... and you still have to find the parts". The pain is real.
Same. When I smashed my white dial Speedy Reduced Omega said it was so old they had to send it back to Switzerland for repair and it would take 3 months. I needed a watch I decided to get one with a different colour dial so I bought a blue dial Planet Ocean. Then, after the watch came back, I decided I needed a watch without a numbered bezel, so I bought a blue dial Aqua Terra because I now love blue dials. Then I decided I needed a black dial watch so I bought a Rolex Explorer. If only I hadn’t smashed my Speedy…
@@ianforber Yeah, Omega service is something else... I sent them mine once, bezel had popped off. Took them 6 months to fix and send back, 6 months. To put a bezel back on. Not long after that, I sent it in for service, they wanted to charge me more than I had paid for the watch brand new, claimed I NEEDED to change the sapphire glass (in perfect condition) AND bracelet, told them I only wanted them to service the movement, they told me "i didn't get to choose what was serviced" that it had to either agree to everything or refuse the service entirely. So I sent it one more time, different Omega service center. They quoted me for half the amount of the first quote... didn't even mention the sapphire or bracelet. This only made me trust Omega service even less. Ever since that day, when I need it serviced, I just buy a movement on ebay and have a local watchmaker service it.
Thank you! You just talked me out of buying that Chopard I’ve been lusting after. In hindsight, who would be fool enough to drop that kind of cash? I think I’ll get a Citizen and donate the balance to widows and orphans. Thank you for talking some sense into me!
You are funny, I wear sometimes a ten pound watch which I enjoy, and sometimes i wear my Seiko from 1970 what I had for my 10th birthday which still looks great and keeps time well
Pressure in water is not just the hydrostatic pressure, but when in motion, the dynamic pressure. Just like the Bernouli phenomenon that causes the flow of air over a wing to lift a jumbo; moving your arms in the water will subject your watch to pressure greater (and lesser) than the depth the watch is at. That's why there is an ISO standard for dive watches that seems overkill given the depths most recreational divers reach.
It depends on the depth and the water, I’ll try and model it for salt water and 40 metres (normal limit for recreational diving) but I won’t be able to account for the shape of the watch. Give me a couple of days.
I bought that Hoffman that featured on one of your previous videos. 50 metres water resistance, also has a screwdown crown... I might wear it in the rain one day.
The Apple Watch was what got me interested in watches. I’ve always had fossil watches growing up. But the Apple watch lead me down the RUclips channel of watch repair and enjoyment. So now I have a Marathon quartz and Apple watch. With the gumption of learning to repair my old broken fossils.
You will break a 50 metre watch by swimming with it, in the pool...as the physical pressure you create by jumping in the pool, or even the action of swimming with it, could easily pop open the crown or pop the back off...or overload the water resistance.
From practical experience I KNOW that sort of use won't let water into a Vostok Komandirskie rated at 20 metres waterproof according to the back of my brass one.
3:04 From Malaysia (Penang), awesome that you mention Kuala Lumpur. “Unhealthy obsession with other man’s wrists” is very true too 😂 Love your contents since from “the talking hands”.
"...screwed worse than a rounded phillips head." Another thought-provoking video peppered with a few good laughs. Pretty important information for the poor sot just getting into the hobby. Thank you Andrew!!
Hey Andrew you’re so correct about everything you have said here about watches. I’m guilty as charged as I have over 70 watches of all types models metals from as low is 3k to 200k. I’m not sure if there’s a fix for this. Keep up with these great videos. Cheers 🥂
My swimming pool has a magical portal which transports me to the Mariana Trench. This, is why a 50m watch is questionable for me. The portal works on random, and hence I bought a 300m diver to swim in my pms’ing pool 💯
May sound Impossible nowadays, but my grandfather actually owned one watch his entire life. By the time I got it, it had its case exchanged for that of a different model and its dial wiped clean
My watch was purchased 2 years ago from MAMACOO and, to this day, it still looks and runs as well as it did the day it arrived. That movement has never missed a beat despite never having been serviced. I can't complain about that.
The depth confusion comes from static vs mobile usage. A watch that is marked at 50m is rated for a static 50m of pressure. But if you swim with it, the pressure on the watch as you move your arms through the water can increase significantly, and you’re now dealing with more than a static 50m rating. As it’s impossible to predict how someone will move / use / swim with a watch, they always quote the static pressure. But to swim safely, the 50m is on the cusp, it’s probably ok if you use it in the bath lol.
Brass Vostok Komandirskies are rated at 20 metres. As long as you screw down the crown and the gaskets are good you can swim, shower and wash your hands however you want. Same gaskets, crown etc. as the 200m rated Amphibia just a thinner back.
I’ve wondered about WR too. Last year my 30m Casio F91 accidentally went through a full laundry cycle. Been swimming and hot tubbing with it since. Wondering if same for all my many others.
I think your channel is the best at least regarding your jokes! The best script ;) Great! ❤ But I am trying my best with my own videos, at least the first one!
What an honest refreshing vlog, i was looking to buy either a green faced Patek Philippe Aquanuat or Nautilus, after watching this vlog i thought F it, i,ll but a house and make money. Juhaptergee
One of my favorite watches is a casio chronograph that cost me 43 bucks brand new. It looks amazing and tells better time than more costly time pieces I own. Watch collecting is something of a schizophrenic activity. Trying to explain to a therapist why you buy watches would soon see your therapist seeing a therapist.
People say the Apple Watch isn’t a watch because it’s better described as a white good, or a portable electronic device, than a “timepiece”. We have categories for a reason.
Yep I was in the dentist last week desperately staring at the guy's wrist opposite me...unfortunately as he glanced over at me, he had his hands resting casually you-know-where! Awkward!!

Me trying to convince myself, my partner, my parents that my watch buying and trading hobby is just for investment purposes, knowing in the back of my mind that it is just an excuse to buy more expensive watches. Also, each time I buy an expensive watch, it's always the last watch I would ever buy till the next one comes along.
Mate those colors worse shade of yellow and puke tone of red are like dragging sandpaper over my eyes every time it appears on screen. It super clashes with your cool tone video filter. You gotta change those brand colors. They are hublo of brand colours
I choose automatics because I have had so many quartz watches and the batteries dying or going bad destroying the internals. I want a spring drive, but they are not in my price range, so...regular Seikos and Orients are where I like to be. Looking to pick up the red faced Kamasu next. I keep wincing when you or any other watch guy says "it's a really affordable choice at $X,XXX."
I own 5 quartz watches and 4 of them are from the early 80s and late 80s. I never had a problem with the batteries and all of them have their original movement's
Now I know that worrying about dying while wearing a good watch (or at least a non-embarrassing watch), is a false value. :) But I would probably get into watch collecting, if the only alternative was getting up close and personal with alligators.
About that 50m / 5ATM / 5BAR designation: The best way to define this is “casual swimming.” And what is “casual swimming”? Simple. People who don’t go to a swimming pool more than once a week, who usually stay in the shallow end to splash around with their kids, who don’t use the diving board, who dog paddle, who like to wade in the beach or just cool off. That’s the sort of folk who can wear a 5ATM-rated watch without worrying about it. OTOH: if you swim as a regular form of exercise, if you indulge in water polo or like to dive off the diving board more than once a week, then a watch with 10ATM is more up your speed. If you want to wear a watch in a hot tub / jacuzzi, then a G-Shock or an ISO-6425-rated dive watch is recommended because they’re known to withstand high water temperatures.
Love your last point about never needs to worry about a watch collection growing too big, because by that time, your wife will divorce you and take half of them away. So, when my wife asks me why I want to buy another watch as I already have too many, I’ll ask her whether she is planning to divorce me. If she says no, then my watch collection is obvious not too big yet. If she says yes, then I better buy two because she is going to take one away from me anyway.
did the box the speedmaster comes in change (shrink) over the past few years? it used to come in a huge box with all sorts of accessories, but pictures i see nowadays seems like they've downsized a bit?
My favorite 2024 is the Prospex Limited Edition 1965 Recreation European Exclusive in Gradation Island Blue. The dial is stunning and the contrast when on a white strap is to die for. I will get my hands on one from MAMACOO
I've recently began my obsession as a watch collector. And i must say- out of all the luxury brands I've been researching, for me the AMZWATCH's watches are the most intriguing.
‘Mobile phone’ insurance is a scam when the term payments equal the value of the handset (EE, I’m looking at you). Just put the equivalent monthly payment in your ISA. Other than that, insurance is usually a good idea.

I love the name of the youtube channel „just one more watch“.
Now I know that worrying about dying while wearing a good watch (or at least a non-embarrassing watch), is a false value. :)
But I would probably get into watch collecting, if the only alternative was getting up close and personal with alligators.
Absolutely brilliant.
About that 50m / 5ATM / 5BAR designation:
The best way to define this is “casual swimming.”
And what is “casual swimming”?
Or a Vostok Komandirskie. As it's rated to 2 atmospheres it will tolerate all that swimming and hot water. You might have to change the strap though🤣
Highly entertaining video that makes a person think about the absurdities - and don't forget about the joys - of this hobby.
A water resistant watch is tested at rated depths for only 10 minutes. So what happens if you swim 11 minutes? No one really knows for certain.
The Water Police will arrest you and sell your children to Poseidon.
The “puff of Moebius 9010” reference was a solid one lol
Watch fans live in a small world. Most of our knowledge is completely unknown to ‘everyday people’.
Great video though!
did the box the speedmaster comes in change (shrink) over the past few years? it used to come in a huge box with all sorts of accessories, but pictures i see nowadays seems like they've downsized a bit?
My favorite 2024 is the Prospex Limited Edition 1965 Recreation European Exclusive in Gradation Island Blue. The dial is stunning and the contrast when on a white strap is to die for. I will get my hands on one from MAMACOO
I've recently began my obsession as a watch collector. And i must say- out of all the luxury brands I've been researching, for me the AMZWATCH's watches are the most intriguing.
Brilliant and thank you. 👍😁
This was extraordinarily entertaining!
I've financed two watches for zero percent interest. Sometimes the deal comes up when you are still saving.
And by the time you have saved the price has gone up 10%
‘Mobile phone’ insurance is a scam when the term payments equal the value of the handset (EE, I’m looking at you). Just put the equivalent monthly payment in your ISA. Other than that, insurance is usually a good idea.
I would buy an AliExpress homage watch that had "Pilchard Bill" on the dial
Love your stuff bud, even a decade later!
Absolutely right Andrew. One watch just cannot be done. So now it’s settled. 😜
