If you're a sucker for tool watches then the GW-5000U has to be on your short list. After six years of buying and selling watches, I've finally narrowed down my collection to three watches: 1. Casio G-Shock GW 5000U 2. Seiko SKX009 3. Omega Speedmaster Professional
The reason for the mineral crystal is its ability to withstand shocks, sapphire crystal, although is extremely scratch resistant is more “brittle” and can crack easier due to extreme shocks.
@@realman444just to make them more luxurious, and they also known that not many people will abuse a 3-4000 thousand dollars g shock. So sapphire is quite safe for those
@@Ferien7 Still works 100%. No servicing really, just a new battery when it needs it and a new seal once. I don't wear it everyday (I have a few watches) but it's always been a solid and reliable beast. Edit: I just remembered it had a new bezel about a year ago - the rubber had perished and gone brittle.
Great review and outstanding photography. I started with the base $45 DW-5000 thinking I would be satisfied, but like chips, you can't have just one. 6mos later I bought this exact watch, then I did what I thought I would never do, I spent $500 on the all metal G-5000. The square G-shock is an incredible go anywhere, in any environment and seems to fit everyone. Anyone on the fence looking for a near indestructible watch that comes in just about every color and design wont be disappointed.
Have owned the GW-5000 for about 6 years. It’s been rock-solid and will likely outlive me. Also own the titanium Casio Oceanus - same crazy solar-powered, radio-signal accuracy in a casual sport watch. Recommended.
I actually prefer the 5610 face with the red outlining round it - it reminds me of the red piping on a VW Golf GTi grille and interior which differentiated it from lesser models...
Great review, no wonder the crystal was scratched after grinding it in the dirt, lol! I have the DW5200 from 1984, the hero, and the crystal is unmarked and I have been diving, hiking, DIYing and it has accompanied me in the original Gulf War and later in Iraq. One of the small details of this watch you reviewed is that the graphics are so much more classy and the U designation means that it has the date that can be in the USA mode or the European mode. This will genuinely last a lifetime if my 38 year old DW5200 is anything to go by.
Yeah, I knew people would spot that was how I did it 😂 I was filming and was trying to think of all the things I could do to bash the watch around a bit. I thought of that and instantly regretted it when I saw I'd scratched the crystal. 😅
@12 and 60 In normal wear, the face of the watch wouldn't be ground on stone that way , so you can regret your test for the rest of the watches life! I just hope it doesn't bug you too much?
I have my GW-B5600... solar, radio controlled, BT. I wouldn't change it for any other watch in existence, except maybe for some other G-shock. G-shocks are the best watches ever. Period.
Great review. I've been contemplating this one for a few weeks. Like you, I wish they did sapphire on some of these lower priced G-shocks, without having to go up to the limited edition titaniums etc. to get one. They've started introducing sapphire on some of the cheaper Edifice watches over the last few years, so here's hoping.
There are two things that the basic DW-5600E-1V is best at: The alarm that can be set for the month/day, and the indicator light that can be set for the alarm. None of the Solar G-Shocks know these two things, I don't even understand the designers, why they didn't include them...
It's a great watch, but the LED back light is very far from an upgrade and that's a real shame. I have no idea why Casio changed this, as if it's not broken don't fix it. The legibility is not as good and you get a bright white hot spot on one side of the watch, which looks cheap, doesn't illuminate evenly...like the Casio's of old.
I got one after my 1987 DW 5600c lcd went a few years ago! I wanted as near to it as modern day possible? The extra benefit of solar power was a bonus. The price was not a consideration for me as if you think how many years it will go its money well spent! I have got the 3159 module as its about four years old. This is a daily work watch and i even find i wear it almost all the time, even when not at work as its so comfortable . I also had the basic DW 5600e but it was just to cheap feeling and those screws on the back are a pet hate of mine. This GW 5000/ 5000u are great, but i wish they would make it with a bit more of the original colours and brick work?
Not sure what you did to scratch that screen, it twas noticeable from the start of this video. It's pretty scratch proof in my opinion (5610U owner here), but yeah I agree with you - at that price point I expected a sapphire glass. Was actually surprised that it wasn't. Update: oh you rubbed it on the dirt, yikes, probs some tiny sharp particles there. You know the sand is the worst enemy to glass, yes?

I've got an 5610 with Tough Solar and radio control. I like it very much. I wish it had a more modern display. I don't need any colors, but nicer numbers instead of the old 7 segment characters. But it's my favourite watch anyway.
I've had my reissue from SeiyaJapan since 2014~ and there's no comparison. However, for an every day substitute you can't beat a 5600e, as it was cheaper as a whole compared to just replacing the strap on a DW5K
Here are a few things to consider about the GW5000: 1. The first G Shock was created because the Casio engineer dropped and broke an automatic watch which had been a gift; he became obsessed with making a watch that could withstand shock, drops and water. The GW5000 is structurally the same as the first G Shock, which demonstrates the efficacy of his design. 2. The entry level squares have resin inner cases, whereas the GW5000 has a steel inner case. This is what gives it more weight and heft. It also has a screwdown caseback, unlike most other G Shocks. 3. This G Shock as much a purpose built tool watch as any vintage Rolex Submariner or Omega Speedmaster. It only lacks the romance of historical adventure because it came after those models. And today, this is way more an explorer's tool watch than any current Rolex, Omega, Longines or Oris. Seiko and Citizen have taken their place as manufacturers of inexpensive and robust tool watches. If only Casio had put in the full metal module and display, then it would have Bluetooth connectivity, the extra crisp STN readout, and bigger buttons.
Thank you for this! I was trying to figure out if it had the STN display or not. I got to use to the buttons and stn display on my steel model. I really wanted to like this one, but Im thinking the button size and lack of stn display is a deal breaker for me. I would have been willing to pay more for those two features. My steel version is almost perfect, but I really prefer the resin casing over the steel. It wears less.
@@enriqueleon6493 I keep looking to see if an aftermarket resin bezel for the full metal squares is available, but I haven't found anything. I would love to get an all steel GMWB5000 with positive display and swap the bezel and strap for black resin. Ultimate luxury stealth tool watch.

i have never scratched a gshock glass or even seen one get scratched in person and i have no idea how you did it by just going outside in the forest since the glass is harder than most of the rocks and you would need sharp steel object in a city to hit it hard to get a scratch
I scratched alot one of mine but on 90⁰ angle with a very high hardness. Very rare work environement. The scratches are very fine, i can see the time with no problems.
I own the previous version of the 5000, my son has the 5600. The band is much nicer on the 5000. The buttons are easier to push on the 5600. If you already own a 5600 just upgrade the band and you'll have the best combination. Plus the dash of red on the 5600 looks sharp.

I don't mind the odd nick or scratch on the case. Adds character. I get anal about the screens though.
dw5610 vs. gw-5000u there is a night & day difference between the two.. 5000u not only has scew in caseback but the whole case that is holding the inside module is built like a tank it is all steel.. the 5610 has resin platic case that will rott & will be brittle in time.. but the stainless steel will last more than our lifetime it will last 10x or more than the plastic dw5610..
I own gbd, only display is ok, fantastic. No beep hour, no solar, no atomic. But gbd 200 display and 5610 in 1 watch is my dream... Maybe 1 day we can se that. Sorry for my litle bad engish and good luck.
I have an older GW-5000, from about 6 or 7 years ago. At the time, it was the most expensive square G-Shock ever -- something in the area of $325 (I believe) -- and it was only available as an import from Japan on reseller sites. It was nearly indistinguishable from any other square available on Amazon for $35 to $80. Casio has gone overboard on the pricey squares since then. I still love this stealth, retro, nerdy, rarity.
If GW 5000U can replaced to Titanium case and sapphire crystal but keep resin bezel and strap,it would be perfect. Also maybe the movement can be swap to gmw b5000 which led is more uniform and BT function is also nice.
It's overpriced at €/$ 300 but I recently found it at € 200 so I had to try it as I already owned the other resin models - also the great and light S5600U - and it's nice but the buttons are a bit stiff and there's no big buttons like on the full metal square models. Honestly the GW-M5610U is still the best bang for buck Gshock square. 😉
I've owned a few G Shocks and this is the best one ever - also, trust me, you don't want Sapphire Glass on a G Shock - yes mineral scratches easier but doesn't shatter like sapphire which is essential on a tough tool watch like a G Shock
Analog with sapphire glass? The Gwg-1000 is the one for you. I know the gwg-2000 is newer and maybe looks better but the 1000 is much easier to rebuild when it inevitably gets scuffed up after 5 years.
I hate how everyone thinks that a negative display is more stealthy, I was in the Army for over 20 years and I can't find any reason to use a negative display. If your enemy is close enough to notice your positive display than you are about to be in a firefight no matter what.
I have two G - Shock watches .. 5610 .. 7 years old .. not a scratch on it .. it's very clear .. no problem .. I'd have thought it would have been damaged in some way .. but it's fine .. £80 I paid .. I also have GST-W310 from 2016 Auto light on both don't work unless it's dark .. Just because mine don't have a screw down back .. don't mean it's not any good .. I have Citizens AT watches also ..
I dont agree that analog watches are easier to read at angles. If im riding my bike to the train station with my 5610u on my wrist, I can glance at the watch for a second and know the exact minute and second, without lifting my hands from the handlebar. I would not do that with any of my analog watches. I would usually not be able to tell 08:42 and 08:44 apart with certainty or know the minute and seconds with confidence, with just a glance, without lifting my hands from the handlebar. I love both my analog and digital watches, but I cant really think of many real life situations where the time is more readable/faster to read on my analogs compared to my 5610u.
fyi you can get screen protectors for very cheap on amazon. I put a gorilla glass one on mine. Be wary that there is variance of screen sizes in models.
If you managed to scratch the mineral crystal despite the highly protective bezel, you would have shattered a sapphire crystal with the same impact. If you want sapphire, then £1500 will get you a Titanium model which you most definitely not be beating hard enough to damage, if you ever dare take it out of the house!
That only applies if a manufacturer makes their sapphire crystal thinner to save money, typically seen in low end watches. If we compare equal thickness sapphire to mineral crystal, sapphire wins hands down in every regard.
Given that I scratched the crystal by rubbing it in the dirt, the impact resistance has nothing to do with it in this case. 😬 Fortunately the bezel will stop it happening in future.
Complete nonsense. Cheap plastic crystal scratches easy on all watches leaving them damaged. Sapphire can take knocks far greater than what would scratch mineral crystal. It is a far superior material used on all quality watches and nobody complains of shattered glass being a common problem.
You overlooked the annoying read border color on the 5610, that alone can be a deal breaker to force a guy into buying this higher end model. Or even falling back to an original 5600 core.
3:59 Not all digital watches suffer from viewing angle issues - pls look up STN displays - Super Twisted Neumetic displays found in GMW-B5000 watches and some Pro Trek ones - viewing angles are NOT an ISSUE for them…
Great review. You can get aftermarket gorilla glass which perfectly covers the acrylic. Crystal. I bought a pack of three. They're fantastic and don't inhibit the solar cell whatsoever!
Same module in 5610u, which I buyed for 100 euro and 5000 was 250 euro. Screw case means nothing to me, I don’t put it in water. Has softer rubber which is not worth 250-300 euro anyway. Rubber is rubber which won’t be same quality after few years so I buyed metal titanium set for 5610u and now is perfect.
Concerns about the glass some have expressed here is a non-issue in practice. I use mine in demanding situations all the time over the last year and a half and similarly screened Casio squares before that and they are all fine. The only reason this guy scratched his is because he intentionally scrubbed it into grit face down(!) (6:40) Who does that in the real world? Again, it’s a non-issue.
They are just things; they don't have souls, and shouldn't be connected to on an emotional level at all. Mechanicals are obsolete tech, but we like them regardless.
Your crystal scratched because you didn't believe in the watch enough and prefer those pesky automatic mechanical things to it, not just because it's mineral. Totally deserved
Great review, thanks. I’ve always been out off by the size of most g shocks but I’m now seriously considering one of these! Heading off for a weekend outdoors, this seems like it would be the perfect tool.
Its the smallest digital square proper G (or the non metal 5610) . suitable probably for 6 1/4 wrist and upwards. Also if want G shocks that are not too big, another is the casioaks GA 2100 range - few versions, wear about the same as a 40mm auto as watch height lug to lug short
If you want an analog watch + g-shock + it's a tool with many functions (compass, altimeter, barometer, thermometer, multiband 6, and all the functions of a regular g-shock), I recommend the mudmaster. You can get the first (GWG-1000) or second generation (GWG-2000) and have an amazing watch. And it comes with sapphire glass. They go on sale from time to time and are a lifetime watch.
@@NathanChisholm041 As an owner of a GWG1000 and a few squares, I find myself wearing the Mudmaster more often because of the super legible analogue display. And the digital display gives all the functional benefits of a square and more.
I found this easy to buy worldwide and Japan mostly. Im not sure why you guys in Europe don't like sourcing outside the EU? I assume its because of that rediculous 20% VAT you guys pay. I though our 10% gst here in Australia was bad you guys are getting ripped off!
I'm now planning to get the GW-5000U, but it's going to take a while because: a. It's very expensive, cost as much as midrange phone from Samsung (the Galaxy A series). b. Limited release outside of Japan, available for online shops.
30 years old watches don't scratch, I have a guess watch it doesn't scratch. Problem it's too heavy so am looking for Casio but if it keep on scratching too much I'll report and go back to my old watch.
My gmw b5000 full metal does not that thing in an acute angle. No matter i watch with my eyes or phone's camera. For the screen i ordered and installed plastic films, very cheap. For scratches on bezel and bracelet i bought CapeCode polishing clothes. The only 2 things i dont like: lack of vibrations and the lack of my native language for week's days.
You made a lot of scratches on the glass, don't know what for ???? In such a beautiful watch, it has no sense... It's enough when it happens casually, I really don't understand what you did

dw5610 vs. gw-5000u there is a night & day difference between the two.. 5000u not only has scew in caseback but the whole case that is holding the inside module is built like a tank it is all steel.. the 5610 has resin platic case that will rott & will be brittle in time.. but the stainless steel will last more than our lifetime it will last 10x or more than the plastic dw5610..
Sounds like buyers remorse bro
If you are looking for the perfect square display, go for a casio gbd-200 the memory in pixel display is just fantastic !
I own gbd, only display is ok, fantastic. No beep hour, no solar, no atomic. But gbd 200 display and 5610 in 1 watch is my dream... Maybe 1 day we can se that. Sorry for my litle bad engish and good luck.
I have the GBD200 As my work/beater watch and it is fantastic.
The lighter the watch the better is for me. Agree the stealth watches are difficult to read make them useless when you need a quick pick to the time.
Yep, agree, you dont need the fancy ones, they'll only scratch up or need to be babied. Id go for the GW-5000U all day long.
If GW 5000U can replaced to Titanium case and sapphire crystal but keep resin bezel and strap,it would be perfect.
Also maybe the movement can be swap to gmw b5000 which led is more uniform and BT function is also nice.
I got the same reference and added a titanium bracelet and clasp from an AliExpress shop. Absulute perfection
How did you manage to scratch it up like that?
Great watch and likely my next one. I only wish they'd included a saphire crystal. That would have made it perfect.
Yeah a sapphire crystal would have made this perfect.
Totally agree.I had expected the 5000U to have the bigger buttons like also the half metal 5600 have.
I've owned a few G Shocks and this is the best one ever - also, trust me, you don't want Sapphire Glass on a G Shock - yes mineral scratches easier but doesn't shatter like sapphire which is essential on a tough tool watch like a G Shock
GW-S5600U: titanium caseback, buttons, buckle and screws, carbon fiber band, 47 grams, solar, MB6. Nuff said I think.
They did NOT make the negative display strictly for the army. It just looks "stealthy" and different from normal digital watches.
Digital G-shocks with MIP displays such as the GBD-200 have excellent viewing angles.
Yeah, I'd like to try one at some point. Hopefully they do a solar version that isn't too big!
Great review and excellent videography, as usual. This is the exact G-shock I would get if I really needed one.
Thanks mate! 😁
This is the grandson of the famous Hero G-Shock. The gshocks in the 80’s had screw back metal cases just as this does…
I love the led lights on the gshocks . They have this liminal like ethereal white glow to it I like. Hard to describe but it’s dreamy looking…
fyi you can get screen protectors for very cheap on amazon.
The mineral crystal scratches very easily. Doesn’t make the watch any less desirable, but the mineral crystal isn’t that scratch resistant.
@@erickbarroso767 mineral crystal definitely makes a watch less desirable. That's why people modify Seiko watches to replace it.
You overlooked the annoying read border color on the 5610, that alone can be a deal breaker to force a guy into buying this higher end model. Or even falling back to an original 5600 core.
Why only one? Everybody should own at least 5 models! 😇

Not all digital watches suffer from viewing angle issues - pls look up STN displays - Super Twisted Neumetic displays found in GMW-B5000 watches and some Pro Trek ones - viewing angles are NOT an ISSUE for them…
Great review.
That LED light is not an upgrade, it's a downgrade. Electroluminescence is 10x better on the eyes.
Why the heck did they do that?
Concerns about the glass some have expressed here is a non-issue in practice. I use mine in demanding situations all the time over the last year and a half and similarly screened Casio squares before that and they are all fine. The only reason this guy scratched his is because he intentionally scrubbed it into grit face down(!) (6:40)
Who does that in the real world? Again, it’s a non-issue.
the rubbing of the face in the dirt / Stones was not the brightest of ideas mate
Gmwb5000 don’t have viewing angle problem
Excellent review mate. The day they give us one of these with sapphire crystal and mip display is the day I place my order.
Yeah yeah yeah…we get it. You can’t connect with a G-Shock on the same emotional level as a mechanical analog watch.
The legibility issues at an angle are a result of the solar charging panel.
Metal lugs not plastic. I own both 5000 and 5610.
the 5610U is closer to the original with updated features though.
Man i get this being better than the 5610 but it just doesn't feel justifiably 3× the price better. Maybe when it dips a bit ill check it out
It is a really nice watch, but rather small unfortunately. Feels good on wrist, but the screen is too small for my liking
But its not a square! The square iconic shape is hard to top!
@@NathanChisholm041 As an owner of a GWG1000 and a few squares, I find myself wearing the Mudmaster more often because of the super legible analogue display. And the digital display gives all the functional benefits of a square and more.
The light is pathetic, no go for me. 5610 had lovely EL backlight.
The light is great, actually.
Sorry man but what a blunder to scratch it like that for a video
Outstanding video, thank you!
is your screen scratched?
I like the green light on the previous version of the GW-5000
I have both, the original GW-5000 and the new, GW-5000U. Even though the EL backlight is more uniform, I prefer the updated "U" version.
I found this easy to buy worldwide and Japan mostly. Im not sure why you guys in Europe don't like sourcing outside the EU? I assume its because of that rediculous 20% VAT you guys pay. I though our 10% gst here in Australia was bad you guys are getting ripped off!
I have a few squares and am not bothered with stopwatch and time zones. My three must have features are 1-solar 2-radio control time 3-auto light.
Casios are so accurate the radio control is a waste
It's nice, but £100 too expensive 😞
I'm now planning to get the GW-5000U, but it's going to take a while because:
a. It's very expensive, cost as much as midrange phone from Samsung (the Galaxy A series).
b. Limited release outside of Japan, available for online shops.
Get bullbars if youre scared of scatching crystal
30 years old watches don't scratch, I have a guess watch it doesn't scratch. Problem it's too heavy so am looking for Casio but if it keep on scratching too much I'll report and go back to my old watch.
My gmw b5000 full metal does not that thing in an acute angle. No matter i watch with my eyes or phone's camera. For the screen i ordered and installed plastic films, very cheap. For scratches on bezel and bracelet i bought CapeCode polishing clothes.
The only 2 things i dont like: lack of vibrations and the lack of my native language for week's days.
I have one 😊
GMW-B5000TVA is waaaaaay better
You made a lot of scratches on the glass, don't know what for ????
In such a beautiful watch, it has no sense...
It's enough when it happens casually, I really don't understand what you did
I own this amazing GW-5000U for about 4 months, last time I synced it on June 16, then I turned off receiving of time calibration signal, now it September 19 and GW-5000U in only about 7.5 seconds ahead, whoa!!! This means about 30 sec per year accuracy (7.5 * 4)
This is why I don't get why people are obsessed with atomic time, g shocks will run slightly fast and be accurate to the minute for many months
Why would you buy a watch with atomic timekeeping and then switch it off?
@@stinkystealthysloth nope, mine runs 15 second slower a month in summer, it's accurate in winter though.
@@asfsfas2435 weird, i own 3 g shocks (ga2000, gstb400 and a dw-5035) and they all run slightly fast all year round
@@stinkystealthysloth only this g shock runs slower, my other g shock that i sold all ran slightly faster. yea so its weird
the dirt got him :D
RIP
omg how you scratched the glass so badly
My GW-5000U is what I wear the most. It is amazing travel watch. Cheers!
What do we all set our automatic Jaeger-LeCoultre watches with, multi band 6 G shock solar, GW5000-1JF
Just received mine. Love it.
