    To raise black children away from the hate of the world. For the dream of Krakoa I would pay any price. Wonderful series of essays! Loved Hickman's era and was really sad about his leaving. I jumped off of all X-Men titles after Inferno (I lost all confidence once the writers turned Moira into a robot. Destroying a character that was incredibly and beautifully reimagined) but thank you so much for reminding me of what a great ride those initial 2 and some change years were. You've made me realize that I shouldn't be sad that Hickman's vision spiraled into garbage under the hands of lesser creatives but to be thankful really that House and Powers of X even happened at all. That, for a moment, Hickman allowed us to see beyond the tired status quo of Mutant in-fighting in the face of global hate towards a world of new exciting united possibilities. Even as a motley crew. Even knowing conflict amongst such a wildly diverse, and often adversarial, group of mutants with drastically different views of what mutant sovereignty should/could be was inevitable. He gave me hope. He gave me Magneto, Xavier, and Apocalypse at a United Nations meeting being straight bosses. He gave me the Summers family as a beautiful slightly broken but ultimately loving family (INCLUDING Wolverine!). I never thought I'd ever see that. He gave me Emma as the hardcore badass mover and shaker that I've loved her as...but on the world stage. He gave me hard sci-fi universe building with the Phalanx. The mother effing Phalanx! It was the most exciting X-Men has been in a long long time. I can't see myself coming back to X-Men now that the quality is wildly inconsistent and the cohesion of overall story is in shambles. The greed of the X office to mine this resurgence as hard and as fast as humanly possible, flooding the market with mediocre X-titles that readers really couldn't keep up with or afford, at the expense of the universe is really what destroyed this era. With that being said, what an exhilarating read that initial reboot was. Excellent content.

      It's an interesting phenomenon, I don't think it's a lack of quality as much as a lack of a big-picture vision linking it all together.
      I've kept up with a lot of the ongoing series and I like what each one is doing, but without the bigger story carrying everything it feels like the line is a bit stagnant. I'm hoping Sins of Sinister is the first step towards them bouncing back from that.

    Maybe this is a stretch but I feel like there are historical parallels between Krakoa and the real world Communist experiments namely USSR and Mao’s China. Nations established with good intentions and for justifiable reasons, but due to external attacks and infiltrations, internal conflicts of interest, and stacking ethical errors, eventually crumbled or morphed into a twisted behemoth of their original founding ideals. In the end, we all know the status quo will be re-established for the X-Books. My only hope is that it ends in a manner that doesn’t discredit the importance of oppressed people’s right to self-determinism and the struggle for autonomy.

      I wouldn’t say one is better than the other, more link different flavors of a great concept. I really like how grounded some of the fox movies feel, but at the same time I love it when someone like Hickman or Morrison takes a concept and spins it in a whole other direction. Just goes to show you how much range these ideas have!

    • @JonGarcia
      @JonGarcia Год назад

      I feel they started out alright, but then the studio pushed star power over story and essentially began repeating the same story themes with haphazard continuity. The world of mutants is much bigger than just Xavier, Magneto, Mystique, and Wolverine. Also, after 2 disastrous attempts at the Dark Phoenix Saga, which I adore the source, I'm not sure it should be attempted again.
      I'm curious to see if the Feige will start with or lead to the concepts of Hickman's Krakoa era. Regardless, plenty of stories to pull from or reinvent within the state of the MCU.

    I was a huge X-Men fan when I was a kid. I started reading X-Men in 1991 and stopped a little after Onslaught. I would stop and check in on the mutants every now and then but it wasn't until Hickman that I got back to reading X-Men on a weekly basis. I was a little late to the party and read House of X Powers of X in late 2020. I've been hooked since. A little over a 20 year gap since going to a comic shop on a weekly basis.

    Gonna start this deep dive video but one thing that ticks me is that marvel made too many titles that all tried to connect and it hurt hickman. I preferred hickman with his avengers runs where it was all very self contained and in the end he did Secret Wars but then again non avengers titles weren't being demanded to connect to the avengers run

    • @ForEveryKindofGeek
      @ForEveryKindofGeek  6 месяцев назад

      It can be expensive on the whole but I wouldn’t say it locks you into that approach either. My first time around I only bought a few titles and those did a great job of setting up the broader points.
      That said a lot of the earlier ETA’s being collected in compendiums which are way cheaper than buying every individual trade. They’re also more curated in those, too

    Real talk, Destiny derailed the whole story and she couldnt even "predict" the future ... so she is not only worst then Moira but organized it so she would destory Krokoa if she didnt get her way? Low blow, Low blow.

    What I'm confused about is if this is a new universe or not. Moira talks to Xavier before he forms the x-men. So what is confusing me is if the past events actually happened or does Moira just remember it happening and no one else does?

    • @ForEveryKindofGeek
      @ForEveryKindofGeek  Год назад +1
