I make that question because there's way more straight couples in media then gay, so my mid has more background to straight relationships. I really love this part 2:21 - any other character would possibly be mad at moomin for failing the rescue or be upset. Instead, here they both are somewhat happy and hopefull to be standing close, ignoring the fact that they just got stuck and possibly now doomed. NO, instead they are happy, nervouse, embarrased. I've been hesitent to watch this adaptation because moomin is so close to my heart. It's my entire childhood, and the animation and music made me think that it wasn't worth watching. However this video makes me want to watch it. The love between Moomin and Snufkin is the most pure form of love that I know of. It is something I've recognized since I was very little. I'm sorry if my English is bad.
This version of Moominvalley is a more faithful adaption to the books than previous adpations (even the beloved Moomins anime), so it is definetly worth your time checking out!
@@ノホモ True. Moomin and Snufkin actually had a lot of chemistry in original moomin novels and comics. Love is not always so obvious as we see in romantic comedies and romance novels. Sometimes it’s very complicated. And it makes lot of sense in Moomin and Snufkin’s case because their relationship is based on author Tove Jansson herself and her dear friend Atos Wirtanen. Tove was lesbian and loved women, but Atos was very special to her. They were even engaged at some point but Atos was very much like Snufkin and he needed his own space and travelled a lot which made Tove constantly miss him when she was left behind heart broken. That is propably why Moomin often feels lonely and abandoned when Snufkin needs his alone time. Moomin’s other thoughts and feelings about Snufkin are based on Tove’s feelings towards Atos as well. Like admiration. However, no one knows what kind of love Tove felt in the end. It could have been romatic, friendly or something completely different. But it was definetly love. Snufmin forever ❤️
Hey, just wanted to say thanks for letting me find out about Moomins and get into the fandom. If not this randomly recommended video I wouldn't be obsessed with these series now. I'm honestly glad that I had a chance to discover Moominvalley as well as other adaptations, since I not only got a lot of content to experience and inspiration to boot, but I also feel as if the whole vibe made me feel less stressed about life in general (especially in the period with exams). This video acted as a small gateway into something so beautiful and thought-provoking for me, which is why I think that thanking you is the right thing to do.
I totally relate to your feeling. When I discorvered moomin fandom in 2019 (thank to fannarts) I started watching the 90s episodes in English and French version (my native language) and I fell in love with the atmosphere of the show. It's so calming, peaceful and you forget all your problems. The personality of Snufkin especially with the harmonica and the montains... It's not something i can explain in words, it's the magic of this universe of moominvalley, it's so nice that now I want to travel to Finland. The characters have really well written personality and they are so touching. Also, the aesthetic vibe and there is so much poetic messages, more the moral of their adventures. And of course this wonderful fandom, as insane than beautiful and creative. So yeah, a big thank you to all of you guys too :)

A hug would reveal way too much. So they create boundaries they may not even be fully aware of. It's all very raw here.

@@Schwarzorn I have to disagree about Snufkin’s main interest in the valley lying in the summer adventures he gets there. Having been to plenty of other exciting places, I’m sure it would be easier for him to simply enjoy whatever unexpected events come along the way as he goes everywhere he pleases, but it’s same old Moominvalley he chooses to always return to. You know, I mostly meant that comment about extra miles literally as a bit of a joke, but I think it’s true figuratively as well. Snufkin seems to get misunderstood a lot. His solitary nature tends to make him come across as rather cold and inconsiderate, but many of the scenes when he’s alone show that he actually thinks of Moomintroll a lot and cares about his friends more than they realize. The problem is that they have totally opposite social needs, and the more extroverted folks in the valley have a hard time understanding that Snufkin’s urge to get away now and then is nothing against them personally. Their expectations are a source of stress for Snufkin, because the amount of interaction that would be preferable for them quickly becomes overwhelming and draining for him. As someone who also needs a lot of space and alone time for my physical and mental well-being, I can relate all too well to that inner conflict between the vital need to respect one’s own limits and the guilt that comes with knowing that loved ones’ feelings will be hurt by what they wrongly perceive as a lack of investment or empathy. I think the beauty of Snufkin’s and Moomintroll’s relationship is that they both have to compromise a lot and come to accept each other’s very different natures as they are. Snufkin, who normally wouldn’t stay in one place for long, let alone come back following any kind of schedule, has made Moominvalley the home where he keeps coming back to spend about 3/4 of the year (usually from the first day of spring to the first snow), which only leaves him the one season during which his friends are hibernating to wander not too far away. Being worried about and expected back at a certain time is uncomfortable for him, but because he cares, he tries to be accommodating. And sure, there’s sadness in the fact that Moomintroll can’t help missing him a lot (during the time he’s awake), but he still chooses to keep waiting for Snufkin year after year, while growing more mindful not to smother him, and trusting that his friend will always come back to him when he’s ready. As the show’s director summarized it, he learns to love with an open hand, which instead of driving Snufkin further away will only solidify their bond and draw him back of his own free will all the sooner. The two are holding on to this sort of repeated promise to part and then reunite that can’t be easy for either of them, and they both mess up by being selfish sometimes, but they’re determined to stay in each other’s lives and to make it work. That whole emotional rollercoaster would be way too much trouble and heartache to go through for the adventures alone, I say (in far too many words, I now realize).

I do agree that Snufkin coming home to Moominvalley IS specifically for Moomintroll, so he _shouldn't_ have anything to complain about, cuz for Snufkin to do that, it really shows that he cares for him and wants to see him. But...I don't think Moomintroll knows that. Not 100% anyway. He probably goes back and forth on it, thinking _"He does that to see ME. He CARES about me, and WANTS to see me."_ but also _"He just comes back for...whatever reason. He doesn't care about me specifically... He had no attatchments to anything or anyone."_ ...Depending on if he's depressed or not. Oof. They definitely need to talk. I don't think they really compromise yet. Well, Moomintroll definitely does, in this show. He keeps pulling back and toning down his excitement and cuddliness for Snufkin's sake. However, Snufkin hasn't compromised at all. Snufkin basically always has it his own way, and even his spending time in the valley to be with Moomintroll, while nice, isn't FOR Moomintroll; he does it becuz that's what HE wants to do. Snufkin needs to learn to do things he DOESN'T want to do-things that are purely to make Moomintroll happy-if things are to get better between them. For example: Snufkin may never want to cuddle, like I'm sure Moomintroll is dying to do, but he can at _least_ hug him, like, 25% of the time of the times Moomintroll wants a hug or something. Even that will be hard for Moomintroll, but at that point, any complaining from Moomintroll would be selfish, I think. And, yes, I've seen the third series, so I know what happens there, but still, what I'm saying is relevant to the first two series, at least. And some still relevant to the third. But I'm sure in the fourth and final series, they'll finally work it all out. That fight was definitely a step in the right direction. Yeah, ideally they'd talk before getting to that point, but a difficult situation is good at forcing out the difficult words, for sure.

Echo probably also played a role in it. There was probably somewhat of an echo. But also, even if it was just like 10 feet, I also would’ve screamed for a moment after hitting solid ground because I’d partially still be terrified, and partially shocked at suddenly hitting the ground. So, echo + shock + the fact he fell off a cliff was probably what caused that long scream
2:27 Ok so now that I saw this scene a trillion times because I just can't get enough of it let's analyse what Snufkin would have possibly said right before being interrupted. Judging by the enphasis he put on "really" it surely was something important regarding Moomintroll. However, it surely wouldn't have been something like "I really do love you" because it would have been too much out of context (like if all this scene had some kind of context at all lmao-). Perhaps it would have been something like "I really do care about you" or maybe he was just about to repeat the fact that he thinks about Moomintroll costantly when he's all alone and so that he's really important to him, just to make it clear. Still really cute tho :) Anyway I sure hope that these two will end up together at the end of the series as well-
I think Snufkin felt bad about trying to make Moomintroll think he was just one in a group of friends. His next statement was probably clarifying that Moomintroll is his best friend. JUST KISS ALREADY
Who knows. But _"I really DO love you."_ would still make sense, since he seems worried at times that he shows too little love and Moomintroll might replace him with someone who loves more strongly. I HOPE he realizes that it's quite possible that Moonintroll thinks Snufkin doesn't love him at all, so he can clarify that he really does. A best friend of mine and I had that discussion. Some people are like Moomintroll, and some are like Snufkin. They can be the best of friends so long as they put in the effort to learn to understand each other!
As funny as that is on it’s own, it’s even better when you take into account the fact that only a few minutes earlier in the episode, Snufkin told Moomintroll not to come running to him when he couldn’t light a fire. And YET, THERE HE GOES, running to Moomintroll because he made one scream of frustration.

Hello there Mushroom Soup, I just wanted to thank you for posting this video. If this hadn't shown up in my recommended just 3 weeks ago, I would never have gotten into Moominvalley. The fandom has been a significant part of my life since then. I might be obsessed, but it makes me so happy. I love these two characters, how much they love each other without even having to say it. I even started writing my own fanfiction, and discovered that... I genuinely love writing in general. I don't have many hobbies, so finding a new one is a big event in my life. You know I grew up with the moomins (as one does in a nordic country) but I never watched this new show. This is actually the first I've seen of it, lol. Still, I do know that the character Snufkin (and his relationship with Mumin) from the books was based on Tove Jansson's former boyfriend, Atos Wirtanen, and the loneliness she'd feel as he was the kind of person that couldn't ever live tied down to a place or possessions, constantly looking for a purpose within himself apart from others. Though there are many ways to love someone, they were with no uncertainty written as people who loved each other deeply.

I've been hesitent to watch this adaptation because moomin is so close to my heart. It's my entire childhood, and the animation and music made me think that it wasn't worth watching. However this video makes me want to watch it. The love between Moomin and Snufkin is the most pure form of love that I know of. It is something I've recognized since I was very little. This version of Moominvalley is a more faithful adaption to the books than previous adpations (even the beloved Moomins anime), so it is definetly worth your time checking out!
@@ノホモ True. Moomin and Snufkin actually had a lot of chemistry in original moomin novels and comics. Love is not always so obvious as we see in romantic comedies and romance novels. Sometimes it’s very complicated. And it makes lot of sense in Moomin and Snufkin’s case because their relationship is based on author Tove Jansson herself and her dear friend Atos Wirtanen. Tove was lesbian and loved women, but Atos was very special to her. They were even engaged at some point but Atos was very much like Snufkin and he needed his own space and travelled a lot which made Tove constantly miss him when she was left behind heart broken. That is propably why Moomin often feels lonely and abandoned when Snufkin needs his alone time. Moomin’s other thoughts and feelings about Snufkin are based on Tove’s feelings towards Atos as well. Like admiration. However, no one knows what kind of love Tove felt in the end. It could have been romatic, friendly or something completely different. But it was definetly love. Snufmin forever ❤️

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for letting me find out about Moomins and get into the fandom. If not this randomly recommended video I wouldn't be obsessed with these series now. I'm honestly glad that I had a chance to discover Moominvalley as well as other adaptations, since I not only got a lot of content to experience and inspiration to boot, but I also feel as if the whole vibe made me feel less stressed about life in general (especially in the period with exams).
This video acted as a small gateway into something so beautiful and thought-provoking for me, which is why I think that thanking you is the right thing to do.

I totally relate to your feeling. When I discorvered moomin fandom in 2019 (thank to fannarts) I started watching the 90s episodes in English and French version (my native language) and I fell in love with the atmosphere of the show. It's so calming, peaceful and you forget all your problems. The personality of Snufkin especially with the harmonica and the montains... It's not something i can explain in words, it's the magic of this universe of moominvalley, it's so nice that now I want to travel to Finland. The characters have really well written personality and they are so touching. Also, the aesthetic vibe and there is so much poetic messages, more the moral of their adventures. And of course this wonderful fandom, as insane than beautiful and creative. So yeah, a big thank you to all of you guys too :)

A hug would reveal way too much. So they create boundaries they may not even be fully aware of. It's all very raw here.

It's been two weeks I've first watched this video....and I loved them both so much that as soon as this video was over, I watched 3 hours of moominvalley analysis videos.

@@Schwarzorn I have to disagree about Snufkin’s main interest in the valley lying in the summer adventures he gets there. Having been to plenty of other exciting places, I’m sure it would be easier for him to simply enjoy whatever unexpected events come along the way as he goes everywhere he pleases, but it’s same old Moominvalley he chooses to always return to.
You know, I mostly meant that comment about extra miles literally as a bit of a joke, but I think it’s true figuratively as well. Snufkin seems to get misunderstood a lot. His solitary nature tends to make him come across as rather cold and inconsiderate, but many of the scenes when he’s alone show that he actually thinks of Moomintroll a lot and cares about his friends more than they realize. The problem is that they have totally opposite social needs, and the more extroverted folks in the valley have a hard time understanding that Snufkin’s urge to get away now and then is nothing against them personally. Their expectations are a source of stress for Snufkin, because the amount of interaction that would be preferable for them quickly becomes overwhelming and draining for him. As someone who also needs a lot of space and alone time for my physical and mental well-being, I can relate all too well to that inner conflict between the vital need to respect one’s own limits and the guilt that comes with knowing that loved ones’ feelings will be hurt by what they wrongly perceive as a lack of investment or empathy.
I think the beauty of Snufkin’s and Moomintroll’s relationship is that they both have to compromise a lot and come to accept each other’s very different natures as they are. Snufkin, who normally wouldn’t stay in one place for long, let alone come back following any kind of schedule, has made Moominvalley the home where he keeps coming back to spend about 3/4 of the year (usually from the first day of spring to the first snow), which only leaves him the one season during which his friends are hibernating to wander not too far away. Being worried about and expected back at a certain time is uncomfortable for him, but because he cares, he tries to be accommodating. And sure, there’s sadness in the fact that Moomintroll can’t help missing him a lot (during the time he’s awake), but he still chooses to keep waiting for Snufkin year after year, while growing more mindful not to smother him, and trusting that his friend will always come back to him when he’s ready. As the show’s director summarized it, he learns to love with an open hand, which instead of driving Snufkin further away will only solidify their bond and draw him back of his own free will all the sooner. The two are holding on to this sort of repeated promise to part and then reunite that can’t be easy for either of them, and they both mess up by being selfish sometimes, but they’re determined to stay in each other’s lives and to make it work. That whole emotional rollercoaster would be way too much trouble and heartache to go through for the adventures alone, I say (in far too many words, I now realize).

I do agree that Snufkin coming home to Moominvalley IS specifically for Moomintroll, so he _shouldn't_ have anything to complain about, cuz for Snufkin to do that, it really shows that he cares for him and wants to see him. But...I don't think Moomintroll knows that. Not 100% anyway. He probably goes back and forth on it, thinking _"He does that to see ME. He CARES about me, and WANTS to see me."_ but also _"He just comes back for...whatever reason. He doesn't care about me specifically... He had no attatchments to anything or anyone."_ ...Depending on if he's depressed or not. Oof. They definitely need to talk.
I don't think they really compromise yet. Well, Moomintroll definitely does, in this show. He keeps pulling back and toning down his excitement and cuddliness for Snufkin's sake. However, Snufkin hasn't compromised at all. Snufkin basically always has it his own way, and even his spending time in the valley to be with Moomintroll, while nice, isn't FOR Moomintroll; he does it becuz that's what HE wants to do. Snufkin needs to learn to do things he DOESN'T want to do-things that are purely to make Moomintroll happy-if things are to get better between them. For example: Snufkin may never want to cuddle, like I'm sure Moomintroll is dying to do, but he can at _least_ hug him, like, 25% of the time of the times Moomintroll wants a hug or something. Even that will be hard for Moomintroll, but at that point, any complaining from Moomintroll would be selfish, I think.
And, yes, I've seen the third series, so I know what happens there, but still, what I'm saying is relevant to the first two series, at least. And some still relevant to the third. But I'm sure in the fourth and final series, they'll finally work it all out. That fight was definitely a step in the right direction. Yeah, ideally they'd talk before getting to that point, but a difficult situation is good at forcing out the difficult words, for sure.

Judging by the enphasis he put on "really" it surely was something important regarding Moomintroll. However, it surely wouldn't have been something like "I really do love you" because it would have been too much out of context (like if all this scene had some kind of context at all lmao-). Perhaps it would have been something like "I really do care about you" or maybe he was just about to repeat the fact that he thinks about Moomintroll costantly when he's all alone and so that he's really important to him, just to make it clear. Hello there Mushroom Soup, I just wanted to thank you for posting this video. If this hadn't shown up in my recommended just 3 weeks ago, I would never have gotten into Moominvalley. The fandom has been a significant part of my life since then. I might be obsessed, but it makes me so happy. I love these two characters, how much they love each other without even having to say it. I even started writing my own fanfiction, and discovered that... I genuinely love writing in general. I don't have many hobbies, so finding a new one is a big event in my life. You have inadvertently caused my life to significantly change for the better, and for that, I thank you.
I'm so glad!! Moominvalley is so important to me and I'm really happy whenever I see new people finding the show! I went through the exact same thing with writing, just learning to love it and improving my skills, all because of moomins :) here's a big welcome to the fandom from me

You know I grew up with the moomins (as one does in a nordic country) but I never watched this new show. This is actually the first I've seen of it, lol. Still, I do know that the character Snufkin (and his relationship with Mumin) from the books was based on Tove Jansson's former boyfriend, Atos Wirtanen, and the loneliness she'd feel as he was the kind of person that couldn't ever live tied down to a place or possessions, constantly looking for a purpose within himself apart from others. Though there are many ways to love someone, they were with no uncertainty written as people who loved each other deeply.

I’ve been watching the original show and reading the books and I really do love the relationship between Snufkin and Moomin. This whole serie is so wholesome and cute, it feels like a comfort blanket :,)
