In case you're wondering why the captain was so mean, it was because Moomin had grown attached to him, but he knew he was going to be leaving soon, not to return, as he's a traveler. So in this scene he knows it's Moomin, and he knows Moomin Mama will recognize him, but acts like a jerk here so that Moomin will hate him, and not be sad when it's time to leave.

Let me think about what I just saw........

All four versions showcase how the transformation was complete enough that Moominmama needed a hot minute to recognize her son, but the third version really hammered home this by making the transformed state as hideously freakish as possible. Also, all four showed that even if the kid wasn't her biological child, she has enough to care for any troubled child.
