I think they're all great but the 90s and 2019 versions kinda hit different, which I find interesting given how the vibes changes between the two.
In the 90s version, it feels like Moomintroll is just completely stuck in the frame of a scared child, crying out for the one person who knows him better than anyone else. The extended periods of silence are so good, because Moomin can't bare the thought of her not knowing who he is so he begs with her to see him, but in truth, she could never see him as anyone but himself. The expressions in the scene are so well animated and heartbreaking, but that hug holds the most weight to me - makes me think back to when my mum would comfort me.
The 2019 version, like the show, is about an older Moomintroll, he doesn't have that same degree of protection that you get when you're younger. I love the way he can barely look her in the eye, it's almost like he wouldn't blame her for not recognising him anymore. But she never loses sight of him, and when she fully recognises him she brings him out of the dark of the cave and into the light of the moon. It really captures the feeling of being older, changing and making your own choices and mistakes but always having someone in your corner who will love you, and truly know you. I also love that the music and the facial expression do most of the talking in the scene.

The 90s version is certainly the most heart wrenching in my opinion. It's like coming out and begging your friends and family that you're still the same person they've grown to know and love. I'm very fortunate I was able to come out to my mom and godmother in a safe place, but I do worry I may have to explain everything to my father, who's a bit more traditional (Asian and Christian, double whammy) and, while I know he'll likely be supportive if not a little confused, this scene illustrates my fears about what could happen.
Moomin Mama being so certain that this fluffy, strange beast is indeed her son is unbelievably wholesome and it makes me want to cry. Her voice is so soothing as well, it's like being wrapped in a warm blanket.

Only in the Japanese animated one that we watched growing up, Moomins’ reaction is realistic. The panic reaction is how a real kid would react to be turned into a troll.

I first heard this scene read aloud by my mom when I was a little kid. I didn't learn about the coming out metaphor until years later, but it makes sense because this scene always hit very different for me before coming out of the closet vs afterward. • @imthecoolestguyalive

I think every version of these scenes is good in its own very different way.
The seventies' version is very dramatised, but Moominmama immediately recognises her son without issue, and rushes to defend him from the jerk that shoved him so rudely. It's kind of a speedrun of the scene, but wholesome nonetheless.
The Bri'ish stop-motion iteration is pretty chill and laid-back, also basically a speedrun of the scene, but it's just because Moomintroll is revealed in seconds flat, and, honestly, a bigger highlight for me is how Moominmama breaks out the fight by pulling the kids out of the limb pile they became.
As many have already pointed out, the nineties' one shows a terrified sobbing child, who _can't_ calm down anymore, because nobody recognises him. It was probably the longest it took Moominmama to recognise her child, which made this scene all the more heartbreaking, as Moomintroll was pleading her to see him, clearly struggling against the tears, and only calming down once recognised. The voice actors delivered the calm and nurturing "Calm down, sweetie, let me see where it hurts." kind tone Moominmama has here, and the barely coherent crying mess that Moomin was forced into.
And then there's this 3D version, where, as before, Moomin is swiftly recognised, but he looks like he almost lost hope that even his own Mother would see him. She does so very soon, and he looks so relieved, as if he can't even believe that someone saw him as himself. It was super wholesome and cozy.
Also Little My stepping away from Moominpapa as he offered her a hug was hilarious.

The 1990 version of this scene is my favorite take from the story. The emotion in the English voice acting and the tenderness make it feel like a scene from a Studio Ghibli film, and I love how stretched out and slow it’s pacing is to give Moominmama time to thing and embrace her son in her arms.
I wish you included the take from the 1980 Soviet version since it’s the worst one. Moominmama (who looks like an ugly trophy wife rather than a loving mother) doesn’t even hug Moomin or talk to him when he gets beat up. She creepily stares into the camera and talks to the audience.
The 1959 puppet show (one of my favorite Moomin adaptations) also had its own take in it’s retelling of Finn Family Moomintroll. In that one, Moomin and Moominmama still have an emotional interaction, but Moomin actually transforms back to his normal self after jumping into the hat again, likely because the show didn’t have the technology or practicalities to have a magical transition like the animated ones.

what’s so beautiful about this story is moominmamma is the one who is most caring, and willing to go up to a supposed stranger and really look at them, and realize it’s moomin. she’s just so kind she wants to do what she can to make sure everyone around her is happy, even if she doesn’t understand. that’s just beautiful

I met Moomins only 2 years ago, and when I first watched 2019 (sorry me it's not 1990) film adaptation, i did not attach serious importance to it. But this year, i admit, when i rewatched s02e06 episode the other day, i just couldn’t hold back my tears, and i just cried at that moment 😭🥺 I also decided to rewatch the same episode tonight and I was just trying to hold myself back from crying, it’s a very heartbreaking, cute and sad thing I saw in 2019 episodes 😭😭🥺🥺 But I may have cried with this episode last year, but only this year the hardest!
*The confession scene is shown more dramatically and sadder than anything else in 1990 and 2019!*
But I know that thousands of rotten tomatoes will fly at me, I’ll take a risk - in 2019 this is shown extremely dramatically and I’m just crying and moved from this scene

1st version has the most emotion.
The 3rd one has the best expressions/animation.
The 4th has good animation, but I think it tries too hard to be cinematic, and it's less quality on expressions. I prefer the 1st and 3rd ones tbh.

my own mother kinda reminds me of moominmamma, mine is much more softer, though, and is very hard on herself, but if she were to ever truly embrace how tough she can be and has been, there would be no difference between the two.
