Simple Luxury School Bus Camping

- We rigged up a bunch of stuff to make the bus look nice and semi-functional for a camping trip. We installed a generator, hitch receivers front and rear, wired up for a winch, new tires, a memory foam mattress, bar fridge from the house, air conditioner... well you get the idea. This video was filmed at Minnow Lake Recreation Site in Alberta Canada. The mosquitos were bad, but it's a great campground for our needs. This school bus is going to be great for camping, but this is not exactly a professional or permanent setup for now. This is the beginning of 3 weeks of camping!

Too late to make the most of Bitcoin, too early to travel into intergalactic space. Just at the right time to watch a middle aged Canadian camp out in a school bus. What an age to be alive.

My husband is cheap
Well said.
I call it living within my means and why waste money on something simply because of the name it has if another works just fine. That extra money could put towards something I enjoy like a weekend of camping. 🧡
@@blankwall7039 he’s probably just sensible about money. 💗

Just went on a 2 day camp in a remote national park in Australia without a spare tyre.....of course my luck the tyre popped and I had to wait 24 hours for a friend to bring me a spare, luckily I was just in phone service range, All I had to keep me going was mavs new video and Steve's new video to keep me going 😂 thank God for that, im home now and won't ever forget a spare tyre again
This guy has done more for " Canadian tire" than any other form of advertising . They owe Steve, they should give him a $500 weekly camping budget
I applaud 👏 Steve for not giving up his principles (or step 2).
Or at least a few Canadian tire Bux.
I live in the US and I wanna go so bad
Canadian Tire is great for cheap camping gear... but NEVER take your vehicle there for repairs - ask any self-respecting Canadian!
Yup
You're so happy in this video. Love you, brother.
Well it happened... I bought myself a decent tent cot that was on sale, bought a cool stove, looking for a sleeping pad as I write this. You single handedly reinvigorated my desire to get out and car camp. Thanks Steve :)
Steve inspired me to put the Ikea foam mattress in the back of the Forester and give car camping a go two weeks ago for the US Memorial Day holiday. Thank God I slept it in the car, because it rained all weekend. I still had a good time in the wilds of Virginia, and a comfy rest to boot. Thank you, Steve, as well. :)
Me too. I can't wait to go camping again. Just so much fun.

He's got her working when she's there. She's most likely holding the cam. LOL, I'm joking. But when he says "we" I never know if it's him and beautiful wife or crazy neighbor? Well not until crazy neighbor jumps out.

Love the bus!
As a fellow owner of an old school bus (a 20 year old English school bus, in Scotland) I have a piece of advice from harsh experience, if you want it.
Replace the Rubbers!
I initially went around fixing the rust, and the rubber looked fine, but it was all perished!
When I say Rubbers, I mean everything from window seals to tyres, but most importantly, perished rubber pipes in the fuel system let in air (particularly the 90° ones, hidden above the fuel tank) and can be replaced with inexpensive rubber hose and jubilee clips.
Also replace all the belts (fan belts and timing belt, unless it has a chain) because one will eventually snap, and at the most inopportune moment imaginable.
She made the bus so cozy! Good Job Mrs. Steve
When I was a child my dad made a 5 ingredient hobo meal. Potato, carrot, onion, hamburger meat, bacon and wrapped it all up in 2 layers of foil. Then cooked it in the coals of fire for about an hour. I made this a few years ago and it was better than what I remembered. I need to make it again. Thank you so much for reminding me about such good childhood times.
Hobo stews the best! 👍
All Steve's video remind me of camping with my Dad, too. We weren't well off but Dad was resourceful and always had great adventures camping across Canada every summer. He built an egg-shaped pop-up tent trailer that we towed behide our mammoth Pontiac....we was styling. Just keep enjoying yourself and creating memories with Crazy Neighbour and Beautiful Wife. :P
I feel like as a child you can’t fully enjoy the flavor fat adds. That exact meal sounds like a dream now lol

Nice! I’m gonna do that too.
There's something about the energy of a school bus with offroad tires that I just vibe with.
Magic School bus fan?
You're now an honorary resident of rural New York. We have schoolbuses with off road tires that live almost exclusively on dirt roads. Some of the pot holes they would hit would damn near knock your head off the ceiling.
It's got a special something about it, that's for sure

Camping with beautiful wife ❤️
We love you Steve
You know, I used to get a great deal of enjoyment out of those 'experts' and their camping video's. These days though, I find Steven and his everyman camp style so much more enjoyable. There's nothing wrong with the survival experts and what they do, but Camping with Steve is just the kind of camping I remember doing as a kid and a girl scout, carried into adulthood. That's what makes him the best in my opinion.
Steve reminds me of my Dad - just get out and enjoy yourself and make what you have on hand work. Plus the dry sense of humour.
Everyone should have a crazy neighbor and the beautiful wife.
Sometimes life gives you a crazy wife and a beautiful neighbor though!?
hi jim , we also cook in outdoor🥩🥗🔥
In that neck of the woods it is easy to find the crazy neighbour anyway.
Everybody does some people just haven't met them yet, lol
nahh, i have peaceful neighbours, quiet parents, loving siblings, huggy school chums, happy colleagues
You now can be a survivalist Steve! Quite a nice setup and cover.
That is a really sweet set up! One thing you might want to consider is a low profile box spring to put under the mattress. I lived in an RV for several years and I had a memory foam mattress on some plywood and in the winter time my body heat created condensation and the mattress molded on the underside.
"I got a cheap version because........I'm Steve." I love this guy!
this would make a great tshirt
It's how we roll in Canada, lol. Everything is expensive here and we pay high taxes, so we gotta shop smart. I'm the same, if it works and is half decent, good enough. Some high end stuff these days isn't worth the money anyway, they cheap out too, believe me. There's a guy here on RUclips (another Canadian, AvE is the channel, who has shown that too) with tools etc. And some cheap stuff or middle of the road grade, is pretty decent sometimes, so the Chinese are sometimes stepping up their game too.
Even the Germans, are cheaping out, go figure (they never did that before) to compete with the Chinese and therein lies the problem. The plethora of cheap goods from China, has lowered the quality of everyone's stuff, even them and they were known for high quality steel and engineering. The steel is still great, it's stupid things like triggers on tools they cheaped out on etc. Same with their cars etc. They used to be good, not so much anymore.
Also Name-checks Foresty-Forest. :)
So much cooking, so thin - I hate him!
[yeah, nah, fit young man - I remember being that]
And Foresty Forest thought he was the cheapest of van-lifers!! There's competition in town(/country).

LOL, watching Steve light his campfire using his propane torch kit, reminded me of a time where I was out tent camping with my kids over a wet spring weekend where I ended lighting our campfire by firing off an emergency road flare! The red incandescent glow given off by this hot burning chemical stick lit up the evening sky in a flickering shade of red that looked like we had just opened a portal to Hell.
The Long Dark vibes 💪🏾
I am pretty sure he has a video somewhere lighting a campfire by flare also!

Steve, cut slats in your plywood under the mattress, or remove and use individual pieces. Your mattress needs to breath, especially mattresses in vehicles. If not, it will collect condensation underneath the mattress and will lead to rot and/or mold.
Yes, I made the same mistake. It used one big piece of plywood and the underside of my mattress started to get mold.

Hey Steve! As a former school bus driver in the US (I believe Canada has a similar law), you can get a ticket/fine if you own and operate a bus privately without changing or removing the word "School" from the outside stickers, AND changing the color of the bus. May want to look into that and weigh the risk/rewards of it. You should be fine so long as you don't make any cops mad though lol
I don’t think any Alberta cops are aware of this law ❤
If you need heat in your bus, those portable air conditioners put a TON of heat out the hot side of the vent, sometimes more heat than you can get with a burner.
Anyone else remember when Steve switched from wood to wood pellets because it was more cost efficient????? Oh how far we’ve come.
hi , we also cook in outdoor🥩🥗🔥
Yes I do remember that. I will likely be doing the same for a week long camp this fall
But there's a lot of free with it in the woods right?
@@Wendy-op3bu sometimes yes.
But we are in a scouting program, and sometimes with larger camps our location looks more like a the plaines than the woods. When I am in a grass prairie, I would still like to keep warm.

In some places removing dead fall is a good idea. It would help slow down a forest fire and make it a little easier to put out if there was one in that area.
