@Dante S you're so right my friend. It's strange, I moved to a new city with a higher salary job thinking how awesome it'd be. Well with the crazy hours I'm pulling it's way more stressful than I ever imagined and I don't really see the apartment I'm working hard to pay the rent on.

After watching your video, it gave me the idea to try it out in my own truck. I live in MN so it's pretty cold right now but not below freezing yet. I kissed my family and bid them goodnight before heading out for my own adventure. Minutes later, I was back in my "warm" house and decided to leave cold camping to the pros. Hopped into bed and watched another one of your videos.

Interesting video. I actually lived in my truck for over 6 months 6 years ago and trust me, it wasn't by choice. I was unemployed and homeless. I would have loved to have this minimal set up at that time. It was averaging -14f that winter. Funny thing is, after I found a kick-ass job and was able to buy a nice house, I'd still sleep in my truck alot for the first few months. I just felt safer. (Truck is was paid for) I still kinda miss being homeless. My stress level was way less believe it or not. Had to do with nobody could take anything else from me. I still own that truck. I might just set it up for just in case. It's my dump run truck now. That's all I use it for. Lol. Life is weird.

Yes, please do fix up your old truck. I was homeless in my old saturn (wish i could stretch out in the bed of the truck) and had to sell it after i found housing to pay rent. It meant alot to me as it took care of me, gave me somewhere to lay my head. If you still have your truck, please take care of it.

She worked at McDonald all her Life and for 31+ years. She have 2 Kids and she did it to support extra money/spending money. During all these time, most People make fun of her and looked down on her... But in the end, she had more than a million dollar worth in stocks after retiring. She kept buying stocks with the extra money and now she is AOK at retirement. Sometimes the easier road seems to be easy at the moment... But later on in life, it will be harder.

Stealth camping is a real thing in this day and age. Many people in San Fransisco do it as a means of living. No one can afford a place to live out there. I've done this myself, but I was legitimately homeless. It's really not near as bad as one might think. Some of the best sleep of my life was in the back of my truck.
Right I was telling these people check out cat lady van and vancity van life Chrome and Emmy live in their vans and I would eventually want to do that one day everything's too damn much money
With the air mattress I use in my 8-foot bed and cab-high canopy (And Walmart is selling some pretty good ones these days, believe it or not), I sleep better than in my bed at home!

The street in front of my work in Santa Clara ( 200 yards worth ) has 15 motor homes (one a mother and daughter has been there the longest) and 3 camping trailers plus a ton of garbage left out side (4 loaded abandoned trailers and a boat) and usually left behind when they leave. I feel sorry for them, but just keep it neat. A half year ago there were maybe 6 motor homes. I've been working there since 1984 when it was new. 44 years with the same company.
Man, I've been doing this in the back of my Highlander for a few years now. Makes me feel like a little less of a POS when I see others do it. Some people just don't realize they can travel and see the world if done with a minimalist mindset. I'm not poor by any means, but paying for hotels puts a big damper on the amount of fun I can have. Also can't beat the protections from grizzlies/mountain lions/wolves when camping in the Backcountry.
IDK what it is about getting out of the house and sleeping like this, it's just fun, I can't explain it. I'm a 60 year old grandma, I would do this in a heartbeat if I had a pickup with a campershell.
I lived out of my grand Cherokee for a year. Traveled all over the states. Took side jobs from craigslist to earn money, No stress nothing. I camped out in the wilderness, couldn't stand walmart. Best experience I've had. I would definitely do it again!
Some ppl like myself choose this simple way of life. It wasn't out of some desperate situation. Being a nomad is earth friendly & lifts a big psychic load off one's shoulders. *Less is More!

In life we can always come up with ideas on how to live , how to eat, how to survive but it's the loneliness from being alone that's hard to overcome, be nice to each other regardless of their status.
The cot is a great idea. When I was in the military I was forced to sleep on the cold floor of a truck mounted repair shelter. Even with a foam pad and sleeping bag I could feel the cold coming up from the floor. It was the most miserable night of my life. I don't just dislike the cold I hate it.

Camper with the wood stove maybe an employee. We had a new manager park his camper at the store when he moved from Calgary AB to Toronto ONT. At least 3 weeks till he found a condo to rent. Not saying it is but definitely a possibility.
I have a beautifully restored home here in PA and though I don't have a pickup truck I do own a 1981 pop-up camper. I keep it set up in my brothers field in New Jersey and try to stay in it on weekends. It's hard to explain but I sleep 10 times better in my old camper than I do in my house and the food always tastes better in the field whether it's a hot dog or a can of tuna. I love the simple outdoor life and find it to be therapeutic. I'm 59 and some of my family members think I'm off my rocker at times but I wouldn't trade it for the world. Normalcy can be quite boring if you ask me. Enjoy your boondocking trips to Walmart, I think it's awesome :)

I upgraded to the airport 😂. Safe and the police is polite with me. They know that I’m homeless and that I’m trying to be on my feet. In fact someone behind me and brought some drinks! The best thing happened to me, I do not have bills anymore and actually can pay my student loans that was a big BS
Life is short! Enjoy it as you can I’ve been living this way since May of 2015. Being able to save money, eat well, do the things you like, and buy things you want, is my main motivation for living this lifestyle. Their system is slavery and oppression, and I don’t like being an oppressed slave. I’ll fight it to the best of my ability. I bought a step van (bread truck), and I’ll be fixing it up this spring. I would NOT be able to afford rent and utilities in an apartment even if I wanted. That’s how oppressive their system is. I would have to be completely enslaved to a job just to afford to scrape by their system.
This reminds me of the many times in 20 years I was homeless and living in various vehicles. The van was the easiest. Lol. I had a makeshift bed of couch cushions, blankets and sleeping bags. I liked it at times.

Really like your minimalist setup. I did this for a year back in 2006 throughout the Pacific Northwest when I came into a little cash. Started with a 2004 Ford Ranger Supercab I had already paid off, I added a Leer Midrise pickup shell with sliding tinted windows (ventilation) , and an insulated pickup bed liner. I also bought a cot, a large Walmart electric thermoelectric cooler (no ice), and a Schumacher jump starter/power station, mainly for charging my laptop and other electronics. When the Leer shell was attached the installers were able to set me up with a 12V outlet in the truck bed and a 2nd battery. I also had a local seamstress make velcro blackout window covers for privacy. Truck stops were great for showering, and I stayed at a lot of road stops with amenities when not camping at overnight campgrounds. Years later after settling back down I sold the truck and still miss it and the free lifestyle I had.
In military training they taught that you shouldn't wear any clothes than necessary in sleeping bags. bare body heat keeps the bag warm and excess clothing just traps the moisture inside the bag.
Yes stationed at Ft Wainwright alaska, slept naked inside my coldweather bag, - 50 degrees in winter, it only hurt, when training started again at 0400, getting dressed.

I'm downsizing and offering up all my collectibles in this unstable world and rent my house out just so I can live in the back of my truck like this guy. Even though I own my home, I enjoy traveling in a nutshell.
My dad built an insert to slide into the back. It had a bed on each side, a small table in the middle and storage underneath. He and my brother used it when they went on overnight fishing trips. As a teen, I rode in the back on a trip from IN to FL (and back), laying on a bed and reading a book. I also had the cooler, so I had to pass drinks and snacks through the back window to my folks. LOL Good times back then, although totally unsafe.
Add a remote car starter to your truck. They shut off after 15-20M of running. Leave your heater turned on, full blast at night and your cab to bed window open. Then if in the middle of the night you want some heat, press the start button on key fob. It will run car for a while and let heat in and shut off a short time later. Or buy a Mr. Heater that uses the tiny propane tanks xD
I wouldnt trust the exhaust to not get into the cap, not like the bed of trucks are air tight, or the bed itself for that matter. The beds of trucks are separate from the cabin, and not sealed off, not meant to be, by design water and stuff has to drain from them when it rains and stuff.
Man it's awesome seeing you go from boondocking and loving it, to having an apartment and still getting a kick out of it, and now you have all that land and a bus. Lol you're the man Steve!
Something I loved when I was doing this in my suburban was charging an extra battery with a solar panel and using it to run an electric blanket and a flat screen tv. I actually liked it better than a hotel room. Very warm and cozy.
I use to work the oil fields in Williston,ND Slept in my trucks camper froze my ass off a lot but loved it!! Steve you are the man!! You make great content and I’m always ready for that step 2 cheers!!!
When I see eighteen wheelers stuck on a snowy highway with all the other motorist stuck in their cars, I think: These drivers are well set to stay warm and cozy in their sleepers. In cars people are with their kids or elderly with their coffee and a snack bar if they are lucky! And some dont have proper winter coats and boots to endure the cold. For most drivers, if the better option when you dont have to take the road in a winter storm is not to take the road. At least in a big truck you will be safe.
For the cooking burner I would recommend a “C” clamp on one of the three legs to fasten the burner to the table so that it is not easily knocked off of the table. EDIT: oops I see I left that tip here in the comments 11 months ago - - as Gilda Radner used to say - - NEVER MIND!
I do this when I go to parties with my friends. I have a cot in the bed of my truck and a heavy sleeping bag. Then go to sleep once im done for the night.
I'm in an Scottsdale AZ Walmart parking lot watching this. It's Thanksgiving day 2020. In my Astro van snowbirding (don't think that's a word) got down to 44 degrees and I got pretty cold. But than, I'm 76 years old.

At 72 I camp in my A/R/E cap . Eped -25c air mattress canvas bag with Hudson Bay blanket . on the windows foil heat blankets that are for windshield . heat refection in day , at night warmth . propane Heater buddy when - 15 / 30 c . ALWAYS ventilate well , roof vent open . Lived in a ram maxi van for three years in the 70's : > )
Years ago I had a 76 Chevy 4x4. I put an insulated topper on it. I took 3/4" plywood and cut it to fit the bed. Covered it with carpet and with the extra plywood I made a bed that went sideways at the front of the bed. Took my hunting dog with me and camped out for a few days! Had 40 gallons of fuel (13 mpg's) and a shotgun and a dog! Oh the memories! I know you recorded this a few years ago,,,, but it brought back such good memories! Oh and back then I did "step 2"!
I only recently discovered your channel and I've been watching ever since. You've got such a positive spirit and I love your delivery and sense of humor. On occasion, It's so deadpan. Those Mylar camping blankets they sell in the camping sections at Walmart and sporting good stores are excellent to tape over windows..pulled tight you can see out but it looks like foil to anyone from a distance (they can see a little inside if they walk right up to the window and your light is one). I used them on my bedroom windows to keep the light out in the daytime cause I worked at night. And they helped keep my room cooler in the summer too. One day my daughter looked out and saw a girl trying to get into everyone’s cars in the parking lot. she couldn’t tell that we could see her.
This is awesome when I go skiing my dad drives while I'm in the back and I put my backpack on the seats and I bring my blankie and I sleep back there and if we are at a food stop he wakes me up and I will eat. I love camping out in the car it is really fun.

okay so I know this is a little late, but I personally, not having done this myself, but I do know a bit about power saving stuff. Nonetheless enough ranbling back to the point. I would recommend taking your current setup and changing your power source to a separate battery stored underneath the sleeping area. the reason for this is to keep your battery from being accidentally completely discharged, also iwound recommend getting a VERY small desk, maybe even a usb one, but aim it out the cab window if you do happen to cook, closing the one to truck, but keeping the topper open. this would keep any form of fumes and vapor out of the sleeping area, as well as it being very power conservative since you can use a simple usb converter you can buy for a buck, and with a cheap $2 extension cord would add more plugs. this would also keep the window closed by using a closed circuit in the back, thus conserving more heat and more calories, keeping food consumption low. again sorry for the long winded comment, but just thought I'd share a bit of information that came to mind.
we done this on tour a lot, it is easiest option and you can actually throw a whole queen or double matress in there and it makes a whole comfy area, u just have to leave shoes off and not as much overhead but id say the comfort plus made it worthwhile.

I have made about 6 trips from Washington to Illinois and I never stayed in a hotel. I always just found a quiet place in some town along I90 and slept in the driver's seat. Being over 6 foot, it wasn't the most comfortable place to sleep, but I stayed warm for the most part, every once in a while I would get the heat on just enough to warm up and then off it went. Never had any problems

When I was a kid my dad owned a 1987 GMC 1/2 ton with a tall canopy. We spent enough hunting trips in it that I built a shelf 2’ wide by 6’ long that sat right on the lip behind the cab. We used it as a table, storage and a bed (the truck had an 8’ bed so we could fit two cots to sleep three people total.
The fact that you "get a kick out of" staying in your truck in the Wal-Mart parking lot really speaks to how cozy your tiny home is! I've been traveling in my Suburban for the past year on and off and I think my biggest discomfort is that I haven't gotten a consistent privacy system for the windows down yet. Just throwing up some hippie tapestries here and there or not even bothering so I'm always waiting on someone to come knock and ask what I'm up to (even on National Forest land...). Maybe a cute bedside lamp would help, too!
I used blackout curtain panels from Walmart cut to size and used "Velcro for fabric" to secure them. It required two curtain panel pieces for each window since the panels weren't wide enough, so be sure and label your pieces so you can easily put them up when you want to.

The cot is a great idea. When I was in the military I was forced to sleep on the cold floor of a truck mounted repair shelter. Even with a foam pad and sleeping bag I could feel the cold coming up from the floor. It was the most miserable night of my life. I don't just dislike the cold I hate it.

Camper with the wood stove maybe an employee. We had a new manager park his camper at the store when he moved from Calgary AB to Toronto ONT. At least 3 weeks till he found a condo to rent.

I have a beautifully restored home here in PA and though I don't have a pickup truck I do own a 1981 pop-up camper. I keep it set up in my brothers field in New Jersey and try to stay in it on weekends. It's hard to explain but I sleep 10 times better in my old camper than I do in my house and the food always tastes better in the field whether it's a hot dog or a can of tuna. I love the simple outdoor life and find it to be therapeutic. I'm 59 and some of my family members think I'm off my rocker at times but I wouldn't trade it for the world. Normalcy can be quite boring if you ask me. Enjoy your boondocking trips to Walmart, I think it's awesome :)

I upgraded to the airport 😂. Safe and the police is polite with me. They know that I’m homeless and that I’m trying to be on my feet. In fact someone behind me and brought some drinks! The best thing happened to me, I do not have bills anymore and actually can pay my student loans that was a big BS
Life is short! Enjoy it as you can I’ve been living this way since May of 2015. Being able to save money, eat well, do the things you like, and buy things you want, is my main motivation for living this lifestyle. Their system is slavery and oppression, and I don’t like being an oppressed slave. I’ll fight it to the best of my ability. I bought a step van (bread truck), and I’ll be fixing it up this spring. I would NOT be able to afford rent and utilities in an apartment even if I wanted. That’s how oppressive their system is. I would have to be completely enslaved to a job just to afford to scrape by their system.
This reminds me of the many times in 20 years I was homeless and living in various vehicles. The van was the easiest. Lol. I had a makeshift bed of couch cushions, blankets and sleeping bags. I liked it at times.

Really like your minimalist setup. I did this for a year back in 2006 throughout the Pacific Northwest when I came into a little cash. Started with a 2004 Ford Ranger Supercab I had already paid off, I added a Leer Midrise pickup shell with sliding tinted windows (ventilation)
, and an insulated pickup bed liner. I also bought a cot, a large Walmart electric thermoelectric cooler (no ice), and a Schumacher jump starter/power station, mainly for charging my laptop and other electronics. When the Leer shell was attached the installers were able to set me up with a 12V outlet in the truck bed and a 2nd battery. I also had a local seamstress make velcro blackout window covers for privacy. Truck stops were great for showering, and I stayed at a lot of road stops with amenities when not camping at overnight campgrounds.
Years later after settling back down I sold the truck and still miss it and the free lifestyle I had.
In military training they taught that you shouldn't wear any clothes than necessary in sleeping bags. bare body heat keeps the bag warm and excess clothing just traps the moisture inside the bag.

Yes stationed at Ft Wainwright alaska, slept naked inside my coldweather bag, - 50 degrees in winter, it only hurt, when training started again at 0400, getting dressed.
Its a rule of thumb in boy scouts too. Nothing but undies. Sleep in clothes, wake up sweating and go out in 10 degrees will just make you miserable.

I'm downsizing and offering up all my collectibles in this unstable world and rent my house out just so I can live in the back of my truck like this guy. Even though I own my home, I enjoy traveling in a nutshell.
My dad built an insert to slide into the back. It had a bed on each side, a small table in the middle and storage underneath. He and my brother used it when they went on overnight fishing trips. As a teen, I rode in the back on a trip from IN to FL (and back), laying on a bed and reading a book. I also had the cooler, so I had to pass drinks and snacks through the back window to my folks. LOL Good times back then, although totally unsafe.

Add a remote car starter to your truck. They shut off after 15-20M of running. Leave your heater turned on, full blast at night and your cab to bed window open. Then if in the middle of the night you want some heat, press the start button on key fob. It will run car for a while and let heat in and shut off a short time later. Or buy a Mr. Heater that uses the tiny propane tanks xD

I wouldnt trust the exhaust to not get into the cap, not like the bed of trucks are air tight, or the bed itself for that matter. The beds of trucks are separate from the cabin, and not sealed off, not meant to be, by design water and stuff has to drain from them when it rains and stuff.
Man it's awesome seeing you go from boondocking and loving it, to having an apartment and still getting a kick out of it, and now you have all that land and a bus. Lol you're the man Steve!

Something I loved when I was doing this in my suburban was charging an extra battery with a solar panel and using it to run an electric blanket and a flat screen tv. I actually liked it better than a hotel room. Very warm and cozy.

When I see eighteen wheelers stuck on a snowy highway with all the other motorist stuck in their cars, I think: These drivers are well set to stay warm and cozy in their sleepers. In cars people are with their kids or elderly with their coffee and a snack bar if they are lucky! And some dont have proper winter coats and boots to endure the cold. For most drivers, if the better option when you dont have to take the road in a winter storm is not to take the road. At least in a big truck you will be safe.
For the cooking burner I would recommend a “C” clamp on one of the three legs to fasten the burner to the table so that it is not easily knocked off of the table.

I do this when I go to parties with my friends. I have a cot in the bed of my truck and a heavy sleeping bag. Then go to sleep once im done for the night.

At 72 I camp in my A/R/E cap . Eped -25c air mattress canvas bag with Hudson Bay blanket . on the windows foil heat blankets that are for windshield . heat refection in day , at night warmth . propane Heater buddy when - 15 / 30 c . ALWAYS ventilate well , roof vent open . Lived in a ram maxi van for three years in the 70's : > )

Years ago I had a 76 Chevy 4x4. I put an insulated topper on it. I took 3/4" plywood and cut it to fit the bed. Covered it with carpet and with the extra plywood I made a bed that went sideways at the front of the bed. Took my hunting dog with me and camped out for a few days! Had 40 gallons of fuel (13 mpg's) and a shotgun and a dog! Oh the memories! I know you recorded this a few years ago,,,, but it brought back such good memories! Oh and back then I did "step 2"!

Those Mylar camping blankets they sell in the camping sections at Walmart and sporting good stores are excellent to tape over windows..pulled tight you can see out but it looks like foil to anyone from a distance (they can see a little inside if they walk right up to the window and your light is one). I used them on my bedroom windows to keep the light out in the daytime cause I worked at night. And they helped keep my room cooler in the summer too. One day my daughter looked out and saw a girl trying to get into everyone’s cars in the parking lot. she couldn’t tell that we could see her.
This is awesome when I go skiing my dad drives while I'm in the back and I put my backpack on the seats and I bring my blankie and I sleep back there and if we are at a food stop he wakes me up and I will eat. I love camping out in the car it is really fun.

burger king is one of few places that flame broil their meat and there is a smoke stack with strong grilled meat smell. if you've ever been close to a burger king then you would known that. there is no place on earth where you smell fryer oil smell like you are saying.

okay so I know this is a little late, but I personally, not having done this myself, but I do know a bit about power saving stuff. Nonetheless enough ranbling back to the point. I would recommend taking your current setup and changing your power source to a separate battery stored underneath the sleeping area. the reason for this is to keep your battery from being accidentally completely discharged, also iwound recommend getting a VERY small desk, maybe even a usb one, but aim it out the cab window if you do happen to cook, closing the one to truck, but keeping the topper open. this would keep any form of fumes and vapor out of the sleeping area, as well as it being very power conservative since you can use a simple usb converter you can buy for a buck, and with a cheap $2 extension cord would add more plugs. this would also keep the window closed by using a closed circuit in the back, thus conserving more heat and more calories, keeping food consumption low. again sorry for the long winded comment, but just thought I'd share a bit of information that came to mind.

we done this on tour a lot, it is easiest option and you can actually throw a whole queen or double matress in there and it makes a whole comfy area, u just have to leave shoes off and not as much overhead but id say the comfort plus made it worthwhile.

I have made about 6 trips from Washington to Illinois and I never stayed in a hotel. I always just found a quiet place in some town along I90 and slept in the driver's seat. Being over 6 foot, it wasn't the most comfortable place to sleep, but I stayed warm for the most part, every once in a while I would get the heat on just enough to warm up and then off it went. Never had any problems

When I was a kid my dad owned a 1987 GMC 1/2 ton with a tall canopy. We spent enough hunting trips in it that I built a shelf 2’ wide by 6’ long that sat right on the lip behind the cab. We used it as a table, storage and a bed (the truck had an 8’ bed so we could fit two cots to sleep three people total.

The fact that you "get a kick out of" staying in your truck in the Wal-Mart parking lot really speaks to how cozy your tiny home is! I've been traveling in my Suburban for the past year on and off and I think my biggest discomfort is that I haven't gotten a consistent privacy system for the windows down yet. Just throwing up some hippie tapestries here and there or not even bothering so I'm always waiting on someone to come knock and ask what I'm up to (even on National Forest land...). Maybe a cute bedside lamp would help, too!

I used blackout curtain panels from Walmart cut to size and used "Velcro for fabric" to secure them. It required two curtain panel pieces for each window since the panels weren't wide enough, so be sure and label your pieces so you can easily put them up when you want to.

This is a life saver. Between him and Hobo Ahle, I literally abandoned apartment life and converted my SUV to live in. It is fantastic.
