I had a wonderful system for tarp camping out of the back of my old Volvo Cross Country Station wagon for the entirety of my undergrad years. I kayaked a lot and camped by the rivers I floated. Most kayak rental places would also have a riverside campground. I had mud tires on that car which got a lot of sideways looks, and a Thule roof rack that would hold my kayak, and on those weekends where I'd rent a boat instead of brining my own, a Thule car topper cargo box. I had 10 powerful neodymium magnets I used with a 20x12 tarp that attached to my roof rack with lumber clamps and the sides of the car with the magnets. The raised rear hatch was aluminum so the magnets didn't work on it, but that was OK. The fold flat seats gave me an outstanding place to sleep.

I had an old 4 man tent (7' x 7' maybe), that had broken poles. I bought a replacement tent and was just going to toss the old one but then I had an idea. I decided to cut the bottom bathtub out of the tent, cutting it right beneath the seam. I then threw the tent over the rear hatch of my car, a Mazda 9-3, and secured it on the top to my roof rack bars, then attached the bottom to parts of the undercarriage. It worked great! I could position the tent door right at the back of the car, so I could get in and out through the tents door. It seals very nicely around the vehicle and provides the bug netting for air flow and insect control. If it were to rain, I could throw the rain fly on but if its left off, you get great visibility and air flow. It's better than a tarp.
One thing I’ve learned when it comes to living in a shelter, there is no bad shelter. I’ve been houseless for a period of time in my life, and let me tell you any shelter is good shelter. Keep on hunkering down!
Hey Steve, even with having lots of ventilation, you need to have an CO detector. It's not about keeping O2 in the air, it's keeping CO out of your lungs. As you breathe in even low amounts of CO, it semi-permanently binds to your red blood cells and doesn't allow O2 to be carried by the affected cells. You could suffocate yourself in an O2 rich environment due to long-term (overnight, or maybe a couple days depending on the concentration in the air) continuous inhaling of CO.
Re. the tracks: Look at the toes. Cats retract their claws and dogs can’t. So, if there are visible claw imprints, canine. If no visible claw imprints, feline.

This is the most beautiful spot you’ve ever used (that I have seen)!! Just gorgeous!
I can hear the rental car agent, the car is stuck where?
Steve under that blue tarp reminds me of my cat under a newspaper.
One thing I’ve learned when it comes to living in a shelter, there is no bad shelter. I’ve been houseless for a period of time in my life, and let me tell you any shelter is good shelter. Keep on hunkering down!
My lord that is beautiful, the geography of Canada is absolutely amazing !
He has one.
Would it be a painful death?
The camp beds were high off the ground, doesn't that sort it.
Im very thankfull for you Steve. Thank you so much. So many laughs and countless hour of Joy. From the bottom of my heart thank you Steve.
Steve makes me wanna visit canada and shop at canadian tire!! I have mentioned it to my girlfriend for months thanks steve!!
What does the gf think of that?
Don't worry Jay, ct has alot of girly stuff. It used to be a man's only type store, now they sell everything.
I didn't know if you'd post or not, but since you have thank you! Your channel rocks!
Oh, the weather outside is frightful
And the beers are quite delightful
Since we've no place to go

Re. the tracks: Look at the toes. Cats retract their claws and dogs can’t. So, if there are visible claw imprints, canine. If no visible claw imprints, feline.
hmmm...interesting!!
Wolf
Steve said it wasn't really fresh so you might not see the claw imprints. Track symmetry is a better clue. Symmetrical =Dog, Asymmetrical = Cat.
except for cheetah....non-retractable claws ;)

Awesome view at the end of the snowy trees and river
Lol Steve looking so excited to sleep out in the woods always is a bright spot in my day. Happy Thanksgiving everyone, and to those who dont celebrate, I hope your day was good!
I saw the thumbnail and said "surely he isnt just throwing a tarp over the hatch and calling it good" oh, he is
I just got a Subaru Crosstrek, this has me thinking I might need to go out on a winter camping trip soon. For one, I own several tarps. And two, I really need to test out the AWD capability. 🤠
I stopped having those reactions after the shower curtain episode :)
I saw the thumbnail and thought it was an outdoor suicide method (by letting the engine on)
Yeah I dunno what's up but it's like he's "phoning it in" lately. Kinda lame
@@Rylo5 He's got a lot going on in his life lately and still has a full time job, or did until just recently. He's keeping the channel interesting by camping in unusual set ups that your average person could do to get some fresh air and see some new sights. And anyway it isn't even really about the camping on this channel, it's about hanging out with Steve. If you want a bush-crafting channel with long form videos there are several dudes on RUclips with two hour videos of them hiking out alone with a backpack into the wilderness to eat oatmeal and pine cone tea for days on end...
Thank you for providing a momentary respite from current events, it was a welcome break and sorely needed. Looking forward to more of your adventures :)
About twenty years ago, I bought this kettle from Canadian tire, it's a Woods brand. That thing is worth its weight in gold. Perfect for boiling over a fire, I haven't had one bad cup of coffee out of it
Seeing this upload reminded me it's Thursday and not Sunday.
We are all thankful for being apart of all your adventures Steve stay safe and well
Happy Thanksgiving buddy back at you and all our friends in the north.
Still waiting for "Stealth camping inside a random person's house"
Now that would be awesome!

Bahahaha! YES!
Dammit Steve that a kitchen oven not a buddy heater!!!!
ROFL
G'day folks. I often have to pause this bloke for thought. There is wisdom in the stealth.
Early gang!!!! Steve, Thanksgiving and a few Step 2's are a perfect combination. Cheers
Hey man... We chatted years ago, you worked for direct energy up there and I did here in the states.. on the supplier side tho. Glad to see you going strong man. I love the content and wish you more success. Peace brudda
Your adventure videos are such a comfort to me , helps me so much more than you know ,suffering with ptsd and many other health problems and headaches etc 👍
Always a good day when steve drops a new vid " lets hunker down "
