U-Haul Stealth Camping In -35 Degrees

- This video is for entertainment only and not an instructional video, if you are considering using propane appliances, please do research on how to do so safely. The Mr. Buddy heater is approved for indoor use in the US, but not in Canada. There is a low-oxygen shut-off, but it still requires ventilation. Always bring a carbon monoxide alarm and a fire extinguisher! (End of disclaimer haha)
This week it got down to -35 Degrees Celsius (-31 F), so of course, I had to go out and see if I could do stealth camping in a rented U-Haul van. Things went as smoothly as could be expected for a van with no insulation in it. I did bring my Big Buddy propane heater to take the edge off, but it was still quite an adventure.

I'm watching a man trying to survive in a U-Haul for some reason.. and it's still better than anything on netflix.
🤣🤣🤣
@Drew Peacock I finally deleted mine. I've come to the conclusion that the entertainment industries just exist to suck all the joy out of us.
lol same here
Well , that’s all well n good Netflix , but we all know where your ideology leads , it’s not a rental van , nor a pot to piss in

Why the hell was this recommended to me, and why the hell am I watching the whole thing!?

Just watch it lol
May or may not have done this in place of a hotel room so it was a good recommendation.
@Roger Balcer Pfft. That goes without saying.
I thought the same thing I watched the entire thing
Imagine going to take your trash out one night and you smell mushrooms and noodles cooking and a man talking to himself in a van. 😂 love it
I was thinking the exact same thing 😂
Nobody would be venturing out when it's that cold, even just to take the trash out. In fairer weather you definitely have a point
You killed an innocent man tonight 😆
I am sorry but this is hilarious 😂😂😂
How can you smell him talking to himself?
Bear in mind if it's cold enough for your digital thermometer to play up and your light's power pack to stop working, it's possible your CO alarm may also struggle in the cold. Thanks for an entertaining and informative video.
Agreed. I was freaking out about the fact that he had all those blankets right next to that heater the way they were all set up. That would have turned into a firebox real quick
@@theyearwas1473wool blankets are fire retardant
I don’t think that’s a good thermometer for air temperature. That’s one you use in a kitchen to check the temperature of food 😂
@@Spencerrojas to add to this, if somehow the wool does overheat it doesn't ignite, it just scorches. Which is pretty safe still for the person in it
you need lab conditions for wool to actually catch fire.

this is what i admire about being an adult. there’s literally nothing stopping you from renting a u-haul and camping overnight in a residential area, albeit some risk with the law.

Oh, never mind, its just "Camping with Steve!" Grab me a step two and turn up the volume. Skillet

40 years ago, when I was a kid, my family moved cross country from Seattle to NYC. My dad rented a full size U Haul truck and towed the family car. We took it slowly and stopped at all the major tourist spots: Yosemite, Badlands, Mt Rushmore and so much more. We stayed in motels but mainly slept in the back of the Uhaul. Watching this video brought back so many happy memories of those innocent times. Thanks Steve.
That sounds like a American movie. Awesome!!
@Stuxnet Cabal a lot of practices from ‘84 would be illegal now. I remember riding in the car without a seatbelt.

Go Steve!
I once moved to Australia from England and lived in a 89 4x4, Mitsibusushi Pajero lol. Once I brought it I was broke, ripped out the rear seats got some lumber n built a bed. I drove halfway around Oz chasing the sun living my best life. I really miss Tasmania, the outback and the ocean. After that I lived in New Zealand, S E Asia and now I live in Saskatoon, Sk, Canada. About 4.5 hours from Hunkering down. A few weeks back she got down to -55 with windchill, in OZ I got to +47. I miss the road.
Steve, I know that feeling when ya trying to get ya head down and the police bang on the window or people come out the bush and attack you lol.
People don’t realize how much skill it takes to live like this, ain’t no book to teach you. Just many hard nights. Some of the best nights of my life looking back.
When people can’t work but I got a job in a 5 star hotel living in a 4x4 in 37 degrees in the Northern Territory. Got the job from calling random companies in Yellow Pages. The extreme heat was my iron and my mirror helped me shave. My shower was on the beach once the sun went down.
Never take for granted toilets, running water, good night sleep, hot meals, shade, a few dollars in ya back pocket, a job when you need it, a car that starts, fire, and good health.
2.41am and Steve got me thinking lol.
Feeling grateful, lying next to my loving dog Lulu and patting her head. When the sun comes up she’s going to get a long walk and I’m going to think more about those times. Been a tough week.
Some basic tips for those new to this.
Park on level ground!
Pull up late and cook elsewhere
Always leave the drivers seat empty and have keys at the ready for emergency bug outs.
Have a tool for protection
Have one area where if shit goes south you can find keys, torch, knife etc with ya eyes closed.
Buy a good blanket n pillow.
Keep lots of water
Have a bag of rice, canned food on the ready at all times.
A good lighter
Propane topped up
Good home made curtains to block the world out
Little first aid kit
A bucket
A pack of Johnny’s
Smokes n tea bags 🇬🇧
Copies of ..Best of Fleetwood Mac and Bruce the Boss and a random Scottish Bagpipe soundtrack.
Oh, yeah, if you got the change some step 2’s
I really do miss the open road.
My advice
Do dumb stuff now before you get older and more sensible.
Stay away from debt
Stay away from debt
Stay away from debt
I’m not a rich man but I own everything I have, I got a small nest egg and I like knowing if I want to/have to, I can pack a bag and ship out in the night.
Still to this day I struggle to unpack and live in a house. I hide things under pillows etc. I feel uncomfortable having too many possessions.
Stay safe people and never let anyone talk you out of adventures. One day hopefully when I’m older, In my last hours on this planet I won’t be thinking about cars n watches.
It will be sleeping under the Milky Way, in deserts, forests, mountains, Prairies and watching the sunset on a deserted beach with the ocean singing, running from a killer hale storm, dancing naked to UB40 in the eye of a major storm drunk on red wine, swimming in crock infested lakes, doing 265KPH on my motorbike, jumping off killer cliffs in the outback and living in absolute wilderness.
I should sleep now x

When the weather gets that cold in the midwest United States we go from being suspicious of others and strange behavior to being concerned about other people. Funny how that emotion kicks in. I bet it is the same way in Canada. If someone knocks on your van it is probably to make sure your OK. This video was GREAT!
you are so right. I was building a house up north, and it was -35. I was long ways from home from November-beginning March. I was to cheap to get hotel, so I insulated my small 5x8 cargo trailer with 1 1/2" Styrofoam insulation. I placed a small heater up front under the tv, and coffee maker. I raised the bed 4" off the floor so the heat can travel underneath the bed. I found that if I put my beer on the floor, they would almost be frozen from the cold floor/heat above. If I raised my milk/vegetables foot off the floor they would stay a perfect cold. Christmas tree lights running around the top. The neighbours at first were very nervous and a few of them offered me to crash at there place, they were nervous that I would freeze to death. One of them gave me there password to the resorts pool so I could go for a hot tub and shower when ever I wanted. People were really nice. the end of the day, I would use the scrap lumber from building the house to have a huge fire, and even a fox started coming around more often when I started feeding him eggs. At first he would be 50 feet away nervous, after a few months he would get to about 5' from me to grab some food. The only uncomfortable thing was running through the woods at 5am trying to find a secluded spot to do my morning duty, and it would be slightly uncomfortable when the wife came up for a few nights to help me on the house.
You're so spot on about that.
There's still kindness in this world, it makes me so happy to see.

I lived in a 97 Honda Accord 2 years ago following divorce...mind you this was in New England during Christmas. Battling depression and loneliness was worse than literally freezing to near death 💀
ouch. hope you're in a better place now. and if not: ouch
Are you still around brother
@@wyoming2ilwu137 yap
How are you now?
I hope you are doing ok now. :)
apparently youtube thinks im on the road to homelessness, so thats cool
Good luck
Lol.
The robot that makes the video recommendations knows the robot that is going to take your job.
🤣dying
I'm already there. I can tell you it's one of the best adventures you'll never have to pay for
Haha this is awesome! Thanks for taking us along! (3 years later).
Looking forward to this one. I helped my younger brother convert his van into a tiny home. Looks like a cabin on the inside. It's so cool for a stealth home. He's been living in it for over 3 years now.
Oh lawdy, when the snow squeaks when you walk. That is seriously cold.
Lol yep it was -36 here in manitoba Canada and when it gets really cold the snow will squeak like that. That's when you speed walk lol.
Nicholas Shumka When I moved away from Manitoba, my first winter I couldn’t figure out why I felt something was missing or wrong. It wasn’t until I went back in the winter that I realized it was the crunching snow! Of all the things to miss! I think when you spend a lifetime listening and feeling that snow crunch, it’s like muscle memory or something.
Linda Terrell
Screw that. That’s why I moved to Florida
Jeffery Epstein
That’s why my family moved to Florida in 1965. I’ve never left.
@@jefferyepstein9210 but it's got nothin on the Virgin Islands amirite!
Man this reminds me when I was homeless for a year, living out of my car. Had a propane stove, slept at walmart, watched hockey on the laptop and free wifi. Believe it or not, sometimes I miss it. It really did feel like camping. Only I had the opposite problem being in Florida. The summers were brutal. Heat and humidity at night was tough.
Cody J Heat and Humidity 365 days a year. No relief even at night. Well maybe a couple of breezes but not it for long. Sucks.
Oh man
Winter ‘09 in Tampa and Orlando were cold.
Winter 2012 was nice. 80-85 degrees. 60 degree nights. Except for 1 week in February when it was 30s at night for a week. May through September is rough in a vehicle in Florida.
Gosh..I don't know how you Floridians manage that humidity!
Blind Sight - Multiple changes of clothes and a really awesome AC unit.
Ive watched this video probably a dozen times since it came out. Gets better every time. Crazy to think when I first watched Steve had no where near the amount of subs. I knew he'd get here! congrats man!
I can imagine someone walking by randomly and be like" dam I smell some porkchops coming out that uhaul....I need to see what's going on...... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣....nice video brah
"Apologies in advance.. [...] I don't mind if you bail on this one, obviously."
You are one of the wholesome and cool people I regularly watch. I am actually inspired by what you do, and I want to thank you for all of it, Steve!
What is it with Steve's? I've never met a Steve I didn't like.
I'm not sure why, but I can't stop watching this stuff. All you do is sleep in weird places, drink a beer, eat some food (like a giant Dagwood sandwich) and go to sleep. And yet, I'm fascinated.
If you're watching this at night while eating something, it's actually really cozy.
because it shows you that worse comes to worst you have options
liquidreality doesnt seem like a bad option to me lol. i would almost prefer it over an apartment
Good idea! Most of us are paycheck to paycheck sometimes, didnt think of this one. When times were bad in the past, i thought about converting a box or bread truck to save dough. Pretty inconspicuous
@@NJmalibu313 I see what you did there.
Just rewatched this one. Broke my heart a little bit when Steve talked about not renewing the lease and getting an acreage of his own instead along with beautiful wife, RIP. Man proposes and God disposes. We love both of you.
We love you Steve! Praying for you 🙏
“These vans give a Burglars from home alone vibe” lol
That's was my thoughts also

"I'm trying to eat more healthy"
*gets McD's next morning*
We've been there.
That's why he's just "trying" Lol O am too! ❤️
He should try taco Bell... Believe it or not, they have very decent healthy option compared to other fast food restaurants.
DaKolby Crittenden-Brown that healthy human meat

I'm doing this with a rental van in May in the UK because I haven't been driving long enough to rent a camper or a normal car to get me to where I need to go. Difference is it won't be -40 it'll be closer to around 7°c . This video settled any doubts I had about doing it - cheers Steve
Such a humble chap. Strangely very soothing and entertaining. Good show Steve, keep it coming.
When i was homeless i slept outside -30 degrees celcius In an 8 man tent which wasnt ideal being so big.
I cut several pine branches off and put them on the ground under my tent.
I had probably about 4 1 quart paint cans that i put tea light candles in
Lay the cans on there sides, produces more heat on the side then standing up right
I survived lol
Wow that sounds tough.
Wow man that was really resourceful. I hope you're doing well.
How is everything working out for you now?
Dont worry you’ll be homeless again
@@abdullahal-shimri3091 wow youre a real piece of work
When snow makes that sound. You know its cold
In my family we call that crunchy cold.
As a Texan....These videos are a real eye-opener!!!! I'm glad I'm learning this cold weather stuff in the case that I need this! The one thing I am learning....it's good to know that there are some who would have no problem surviving Mars!!!
@@justmyself1000 seriously, waco here I've only seen snow twice. Winter kicks my ass. I could only imagine what the teens fell like yet alone in the negatives.
justmyself1000 don’t be stupid, the mars colonization is gonna fail, and those dumb volunteers are gonna die as soon as they get to mars!!!
That crunch makes my 20 year old joints cringe lol
Dude, Thank you. I love these videos. They are therapeutic for me.
Cracker barrel has spots for camping.
Bass pro shop has them as well.
They are in the back of the store
Thanks for the tip guy
Also Waffle House if you are in the Southeastern US will let you park. They don't officially allow it but they also don't care especially if you eat there first.

Anyone hating on how you camp is either way too pretentious or just jealous. Keep on--these are awesome.
I think this is one of my favourite's at the moment, Steve. Thanks yet again dude. Love ya.
I've thought about doing this so many times... cool to see someone put this idea to work!
