40 years ago, when I was a kid, my family moved cross country from Seattle to NYC. My dad rented a full size U Haul truck and towed the family car. We took it slowly and stopped at all the major tourist spots: Yosemite, Badlands, Mt Rushmore and so much more. We stayed in motels but mainly slept in the back of the Uhaul. Watching this video brought back so many happy memories of those innocent times. Thanks Steve.

    Go Steve!
I once moved to Australia from England and lived in a 89 4x4, Mitsibusushi Pajero lol. Once I brought it I was broke, ripped out the rear seats got some lumber n built a bed. I drove halfway around Oz chasing the sun living my best life. I really miss Tasmania, the outback and the ocean. After that I lived in New Zealand, S E Asia and now I live in Saskatoon, Sk, Canada. About 4.5 hours from Hunkering down. A few weeks back she got down to -55 with windchill, in OZ I got to +47. I miss the road.
Steve, I know that feeling when ya trying to get ya head down and the police bang on the window or people come out the bush and attack you lol.
People don’t realize how much skill it takes to live like this, ain’t no book to teach you. Just many hard nights. Some of the best nights of my life looking back.
When people can’t work but I got a job in a 5 star hotel living in a 4x4 in 37 degrees in the Northern Territory. Got the job from calling random companies in Yellow Pages. The extreme heat was my iron and my mirror helped me shave. My shower was on the beach once the sun went down.
Never take for granted toilets, running water, good night sleep, hot meals, shade, a few dollars in ya back pocket, a job when you need it, a car that starts, fire, and good health.
2.41am and Steve got me thinking lol.
Feeling grateful, lying next to my loving dog Lulu and patting her head. When the sun comes up she’s going to get a long walk and I’m going to think more about those times. Been a tough week.
Some basic tips for those new to this.
    Park on level ground!
Pull up late and cook elsewhere
Always leave the drivers seat empty and have keys at the ready for emergency bug outs.
    Have a tool for protection
Have one area where if shit goes south you can find keys, torch, knife etc with ya eyes closed.
Buy a good blanket n pillow.
    Keep lots of water
Have a bag of rice, canned food on the ready at all times.
    A good lighter
    Propane topped up
Good home made curtains to block the world out
    Little first aid kit
    A bucket
    A pack of Johnny’s
    Smokes n tea bags 🇬🇧
Copies of ..Best of Fleetwood Mac and Bruce the Boss and a random Scottish Bagpipe soundtrack.
Oh, yeah, if you got the change some step 2’s
I really do miss the open road.
    My advice
Do dumb stuff now before you get older and more sensible.
    Stay away from debt
    Stay away from debt
    Stay away from debt
I’m not a rich man but I own everything I have, I got a small nest egg and I like knowing if I want to/have to, I can pack a bag and ship out in the night.
Still to this day I struggle to unpack and live in a house. I hide things under pillows etc. I feel uncomfortable having too many possessions.
Stay safe people and never let anyone talk you out of adventures. One day hopefully when I’m older, In my last hours on this planet I won’t be thinking about cars n watches.
It will be sleeping under the Milky Way, in deserts, forests, mountains, Prairies and watching the sunset on a deserted beach with the ocean singing, running from a killer hale storm, dancing naked to UB40 in the eye of a major storm drunk on red wine, swimming in crock infested lakes, doing 265KPH on my motorbike, jumping off killer cliffs in the outback and living in absolute wilderness.
    I should sleep now x

There's a limited amount of O2 in a small, contained volume like a van. A small, propane powered heater is going to use a lot of O2 in the van to burn the propane. Someone could run out of O2 in a van like this. Our brain needs a lot of oxygen to survive. Regular air is 21% O2, and around 6% O2 in atmosphere is when people generally pass out and die.
Another, possibly more important risk is carbon monoxide. Propane can partially burn and produce small amounts of CO. These small amounts of CO build up to in a closed system like a van. If I'm not mistaken, just 150 ppm (just 0.015%) can kill most people, and this is very easy to obtain if the heater is poorly burning in a small container like a van. Carbon monoxide works by attaching to hemoglobin 240 times better than regular O2. Very quickly our hemoglobin is stuck with carbon monoxide, and we lose the ability to take any oxygen into our brain and body. This makes us pass out and die again.
CO poisoning still kills about 400 US citizens every year, and 50,000 US citizens visit the emergency department each year for CO poisoning.

I like this idea, but that heater makes me nervous. Good idea with the CO detectors, I hope he has more than one. CO is pretty neutrally buoyant but it's coming out of a warm heater and will rise. I'd put a detector near/on the ceiling and another halfway up the van wall. I'd also consider getting an all around gas/CO detector. He's taking the heater/propane combo probably to the more extreme side of how it was designed to be used, especially with the vapour issue. It isn't improbable that the heater breaks and allows the propane to leak during the night.

    • @phantom240
      @phantom240 4 года назад +1
