WHY does Thameslink manage so few of the stations it serves?
Hugh tries to answer the question of why Thameslink manages so few of the stations it operates to. It does get quite complicated with several different tangents but regardless we hope you enjoy!

Is this quirky train service going FOREVER?
it makes sense for stations in the same locality to be managed by one operator so they can redeploy staff between stations, arrange maintenance easier etc
Just two things I need to mention: 1. The name of the line you were travelling on is the Darent Valley Line, named after the river that runs through North Kent from its mouth at Dartford . 2 Higham does still have one early evening Southeastern service, but during weekend engineering works the HS1 service to St Pancras will stop there in place of the Thameslink service
I wonder if First Group could bring back Capital Connect or to form a new TSGN franchise when Govia Thameslink Railway operator ends in April 2028. Or will Govia extend the GTR franchise for at least another 8-9 years. And with plans to order more extra trains such as new trains to be used on the Caterham, Tattenham Corner and Epsom Downs routes.
Thameslink will be nationalised when their contract ends as the bill to establish GBR is through the lords and largely just needs royal assent
And yet Thameslink manage Denmark Hill despite London Overground operating more services than TL and Southeastern.
one could flip this and count what other operators serve Thameslink managed stations ( eg Wimbledon Loop Southern peak services )
Honestly I thought it’s other TOCs just “uh could you help us serve the other small stations because we couldn’t be bothered to? Thanks thameslimk”
2:44 Sometimes on events and every twice a day on weekdays southeastern stop at higham
3:13 southern services from London to Portsmouth Southampton and Bognor Regis do stop at Crawley regularly but not Ifield Faygate and Littlehaven
Bat and Ball is a great name for a Station
I do wonder whether part of the reason for stations remaining with old operators when their services transferred over to Thameslink was a means of avoiding the risk of renegotiating contracts with station staff
Nice video, I enjoyed that 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 if you think Thameslink doesn’t manage that many of its stations you should see CrossCountry
This could be a theme for other TOCs as well, for example I noticed CrossCountry manage very few stations I think, for example I noticed a lot of the stations between Peterborough and Birmingham were managed by EMR despite limited or no services from EMR.
Eithen the limited service GN services to Peterborough don't stop at Arlesey or Sandy anymore meaning those are thameslink only.
For the Southern and Great Northern ones, I guess, as you point out at the end, it is just a different sub-brand of the same operator, so it is just a case of them not changing the signs, which happens a lot anyway. But the South Eastern ones are a bit more strange.
Nice video! My local station is managed by Southeastern, but has an equal number of Southeastern and Thameslink services. Interesting how the Sevenoaks branch is managed by Southeastern, yet only Otford and Sevenoaks have regular Southeastern services! Anyways, interesting video! Enjoyed it!
5:30 the next station is kings Lynn?
1:25 that was close
Does that mean the night Riviera to Cornwall and the Caledonian sleeper to Scotland are going to meet like avamti and gwr
Avanti and GWR are going to meet eachother 😂
Lol first time we see trains pass Gatwick Airport and that
Only time I've ever been fast through Gatwick Airport was on The Metro Marauder railtour and I have to say it was a very strange experience indeed!
"What? Gatwick Express doesn't go to Gatwick?!" 😂
Express.
blåhaj!
that’s a very strange sight
I think the last time it regularly happened was with Connex Expresses using the class 319s which were permitted up to 100mph on parts of the BML.
Imagine passanger hst's in Euston
what your favorite tube stock? If you say s stock i might just have to unsubscribe lol
4:05 no no no no no. Have you ever been on a train with broken AC with no windows to open?? It STINKS. This is genius. The caf civities are so underwhelming.
Hopefully I won’t miss the GWR diverts at the end of the year
Do Bond Street to Stratford or the other way round because like that one, 3 different ways to getting to the destination.
HSTs Were Better 👍
How do the drivers get signed off to do this route? Do they have to spend some time in a classroom or join a WCML driver to learn the route out of Euston?
Crew change at Ealing Broadway
Stansted express also had class 360
Another fun challenge...... Lizzy and Central line, you could of done a quick & easy tap in/out
Why are they not using the pantographs?
I think it is because the track connection between the WCML and the GWML is not electrified at the moment, hence why they are running in Diesel mode, i'm assuming they'd switch to Electric at Ealing (according to RTT) ~Hugh
GWR back to Birmingham??? 😂
What stations could i go to along the WCML to see these while trainspotting?
any stations between Euston and Willesden, Kensal Green is probably the best as thats where we shot this ~Hugh
@@thetflthreeI would have to agree Kensal Green is best.
@@thetflthree thank you Hugh

How is GWR getting to Euston
paddington is the london terminus of GWR
@@ireallyamanengineer sorry i meant Euston
There’s a track connecting the main western line to the overground and another connecting the overground to the wcml.
@@-MapEnthusiastjj4eu The GWR diverts came off the GWML at Acton West Jn, then used the Poplar lines to Acton Wells Jn, where they joined the North London Line, just for a bridge before you came off at the other end of Acton Wells Jn, then they joined the Willesden Southwest Sidings, before joining the WCML Fasts at Willesden West London Jn, before they made there final moves from the WCML Fasts to London Euston, it is the same in reverse. They were route conducted by GBRF staff between Ealing and Euston.
What about a quick North South vs East West race? One on the northern line Waterloo to Euston Vs St. Paul's to Oxford Circus on the Central line? Both about 10-12 minutes, it genuinely is anyone's. I've done this a few times with mates for a giggle and it's been 2 all over four times, Northern two and Circle two.
You could try a little race from Paddington to Bath Spa on the GWR and then someone on the Central line from Epping to West Ruislip? Both about 90 minutes, one across the UK one across London? I would suggest to Bristol and end up at Brunel's beautiful Temple Meads but that's an extra 15 minutes and an obvious winner before you start. Bath gives it that neck and neck edge. ;)
Really good idea but you ideally should have tested time instead of physically moving people, I don't think both westbound and eastbound trains turned up precisely at the same time, then departed simultaneously. Usually takes 77-80 minutes depending on computer numbers.
Good news. The class 379s that abellio did not want are being tested for the use of Great Northern. All I know is that units 379 016 and 379 022 have been tested at from Kings Cross to Cambridgeshire 3 days ago
These trains are awful on the Portsmouth to Cardiff line which used to be mostly 158s. Awful 3x2 seats that are not comfortable for the long journey and also i'm yet to be on one that actually has working air conditioning. I understand using thse on short routes but for long routes its just not acceptable. I think I heard somewhere they were meant to get a better referb. with 2x2 seating and some table seating however this didn't happen and just went for updating the current 3x2 seating.
Sounds like you 3 had a good time having a race to get to Stratford and to see who has come first. Mind you the Elizabeth Line is excellent because it’s so much easier to get into Central London.
Northern alco have 3 car 150s
the "london bridge and city line" is a very accurate name 😂
It’s luck of the draw really as to who would win. If the EL trains had been the other way round (Shenfield before Abbey Wood), Dylan wins. If the GA train had been 2 mins earlier, Jack wins. It’s such fine margins but if you’re starting from outside McDonald’s at LST (as you guys did), then GA would be quickest as you don’t need to rush down to the tube/EL
You lot should do Ealing Broadway to Stratford or Barking next 👀
Loved this!
A stopwatch showing the exact timings would have added more to the video. As it was, it looked like everyone arrived at about the same time, and it wasn't clear how many seconds made the difference. Also, you could improve the volume balance a bit (crazy drums were much louder than the voices, and the narration was often muffled and hard to make out).
