  • In this video Hugh undertakes a new Tube challenge he thought of where you climb the 5 tallest spiral staircases (in terms of step count) on the London Underground. Those being Goodge Street, Russell Square, Belsize Park, Covent Garden and Hampstead. How long will it take him? Find out in this video!

Many years ago at Covent Garden the lifts were out of order, so all passengers had to use the stairs, it was very claustrophobic being that some were going up , some down and it took absolutely ages and came out filthy dirty from the soot, which was impossible to avoid. Had I known the lift was not working, I would have stayed on the Pic. Line and got out at Leicester Square, it would have been quicker to walk back to Covent Garden and a lot less exhausting! Consequently I never got out at Covent Garden for that very reason! Well done for doing such a challenge ( I do not doubt your timings).

Good lord! The wind sound in that Hampstead staircase is incredible!
It must double-up as a ventilation shaft!

1:22 i think you may have been one of the first tube enthusiasts to attempt that. Of course everyone who knows Hampstead station would always use the lift anyway great video 👍👍👍

@LeeSmith-cf1vo Looks like too much physical work to me. As someone in their 50's now I try and take the least strenuous method of getting to and from platforms nowadays. However, I do enjoy a challenge though I'm not eager to recreate this one.

definitely worth cross-referencing the officially posted numbers of stairs with his counts, just to correct certain inaccuracies
